They once featured mature themes and had legends like Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar singing their songs. So, what happened to give Bhojpuri cinema such a negative reputation today? Bhojpuri songs & cinema really have impacted the minds of their audience. They tend to think that all women are easy and willing to have cheap fun, and on top of that, they've objectified the image of women in our culture. While I understand that these songs are created for the purpose of entertaining the masses, the subconscious messages of disrespecting women are evident in Bhojpuri cinema.

Me being Gujarati also felt the same for Gujarati Cinema being stuck in a similar template of showcasing same types of stories with Ghaghra, Kediya and Garba cause huge number of Generation X loved watching them. Somehow movie making never got evolved until somewhere around 2011 finally making a breakthrough and "Hellaro" in 2019 winning a National award for best feature film brought it to next level. Gujarati language and culture not only survived but thrived through live Gujarati Plays but unfortunately was limited to small portion of audiences. I personally been watching these plays on RUclips since past 15 years with my family and have felt so blessed that despite living out of county for more than 22 years we feel home every time we watch them.

Mohak bhaiya, at 20:55 you showed various posters of vulgar bhojpuri songs but I identified 2 posters of songs that are not vulgar but you accidently showed them in the vulgar category. Maroon colour sadiya song (1st in upper row) and rajaji ke dilwa song (4th in lower row). Although I criticize the vulgar songs that are made in the bhojpuri industry, but as a responsible subscriber and a native bhojpuri speaker I felt that I should inform you about the same.

I am orignally from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, and i am glad that someone finally is talking about this thing. the problem is the lack of awareness about objectification of women that how it negatively impact us as a society. If we talk about experiments, movies can be made on social issues like unemployment, un-education, caste system and politics in realistic manner. Panchayat and Laapata Ladies (though they are in Hindi but very relatable), we can learn a lot from Malayalam movie Industry, that how they improved their quality in 2010s and that really reflect that thing on its audience because they are very mature.

I am from Karnataka, I had no idea about history of Bhojpuri films!! Even I had pretty bad impression of Bhojpuri films. Thanks for this. I hope Bhojpuri film industry once again achives the same golden status it used to enjoy. I wish people like Ravi Kishan start investing as producers in Bhojpuri movies and improve the quality of the content. You just can't keep taking from it, you need to give it back as well for whole ecosystem to flourish.
You people live in your own small world and know nothing about other states.bhojpuri industry is much older than your kannada industry.Our first president Dr Rajendra Prasad patronised bhojpuri and many big budget bhojpuri films were made during that era.
And as a matter of fact Ravi Kishan already has produced big budget bhojpuri film Mahadev ka gorakhpur this year and it was a success and was released pan India even in your state capital Bangalore in multiplex.

We have 22 official languages of them only 17 languages recognised on the Indian currency . So Bengali Marathi Malayalam Kannada Tamil , gujarati these are the only film industries all over the India people are aware of .
Like the Bengali film industry is one of the greatest film industries in India that produces the award winning films not the masala type movies like Telugu and Tamil .
Very informative video. I am a native Bhojpuri speaker and I agree with every important point you raised.
One thing which you missed in the video is that Bhojpuri was never given an official language status despite having so many native speakers. This followed by imposition of Hindi in the northern belt led to decline of Bhojpuri literature. Bhojpuri was previously written in Kaithi script, but the script was replaced with Devnagari after India's Independence. In fact, during 1950s, Kaithi script was even used by lower courts in Bihar. Even today, the judges struggle to read those judgements. Writing Bhojpuri in Devanagari script is a challenge. There are certain sounds in Bhojpuri which are not represented by any symbol in Devnagari. This makes it harder for people to write content in Bhojpuri. A major factor behind success of Malayalam, Punjabi and Bengali cinema is that all these languages have their separate script. The non recognition of Bhojpuri as a language also means that very few universities today actually provide Bhojpuri education.

The script is not an issue, neither does kaithi script hold any more claims to Bhojpuri than the urdu script or devnagri scr.
And for the extra sounds, it can be easily solved, like marathi did.
The problem is with the mentality of the people. I am well aware of the "inferiority" complex bihari people have over their own language. I have noticed they always shift to khadi boli when talking to guests but speak in bhojpuri when talking to close family.
The solution is simple, bikas bikas bikas. rest all issues will sort itself.

Also, the biggest issue is the masses who listens to these vulgar songs and increases the view count on youtube, which creators think is what audience likes. And this chain of vulgarity stretches. If we only stop listening to these cheap contents, then definitely this can make an impact to the team involved in making such songs/movies.

all those who have commented on my comment, bro if you are so much offended, then can you without googling tell me that bhojpuri language is written in which script?? and also, the bhojpuri song dignity started degrading from the time diamond star guddu rangeela started making the vulgar song, which gained popularity at much acceleration then the other good songs of bhojpuri.
Leave everything aside, ask your friends about bhojpuri songs(non bhojpuri speakers), which songs you know, you will get the answer.

As a bihari I haven't watched any bhojpuri movie. because from my childhood I am hearing that these are vulgar movies.

Biharis really suffer from a lot of discrimination because a certain mindset has been set for the rest of the country. What's wrong with Mohak's video:
He's trying to highlight the serious issues of Bhojpuri industry, that's great, but he not for a moment talked about some changes that are already taking place, which helps increase the stereotype even more & in the end when he showed the bloopers, it was a gesture of distancing himself from something subservient. And not to mention when 20:00 his editor puts "Maroon colour saadi" song's poster as first image without knowing and listening to this MASTERPIECE.
I'm from Bihar and had not listened to a single bhojpuri song until last October, because of some sacred identity of myself and because I thought these songs are some B/C/D grade. But once I listen a song, then out of curiosity I listened to many songs and tried to understand them. Once you observe them u find that most of them are just okay. We are proud of our open ancient society and erotic sculptures, bt we hate the same in musical form. Many of these music are just okay they just portray some human feeling and 'objectification' well that's always there in humans mind both male and female, just that it should not be shared so openly that it affects our society. Video presentation of these songs are definitely bad, that can be compared with cringe yt thumbnail for views; I'm not saying that makes it right, it must be changed. I'm just trying to say that instead of trying to just put forward the stereotype, also highlight the Good part.

In kerala, near my native place we have a movie theater 2-3 houses away. I have seen many acclaimed and national awards movie there as a child. Later I did my highschool and college in city (trivandrum) . When I went back for a semester break, I saw the poster of a movie I missed due to exams. So me and aunties decided to go noon show. But as we were turning towards the entrance of theatre one seller we know asked my aunt " sister where you going" she said to watch the movie. He said "sister you should go home" . Another man also said " this show is not for you". Turns out they run A film in the theatre now. Malayalam movie also had a phase of mainly being known for bad movie outside kerala. So I hope that bhojpuri movie also will move out of this phase.
