I hear a little bit of Grey Ghost in this one. "Don't go wreck the car, don't go wreck the...." "Don't fall through the stars, don't fall through them". Good stuff!
In this day in age, El Oso would PROSPER! Take a close look at such songs on El Oso, Rolling and Monster Man. Look at that deep bass. That's DUBSTEP-ESQUE BASS! Soul Coughing was officially the coolest band of all time, ahead of music by 13 years. El Oso could sell 3 million more units in this day and age (in addition to the 500,000 it initially sold in 1998 - 2000) Would love to hear more b-sides recorded like this one, Whole World, Freelancer, etc.
Legitimately agree 100%, I can confirm for a fact, because on the early internet & early RUclips, El Oso tracks would constantly pop up, like Circles being featured in Eddsworld.
he says "well", yes, but that is a part of the next stanza "well, I got lost in the parking lot" I think. Dunno but this song is so damn catchy. It was recorded during El Oso sessions (the album was recorded December 7th 1997 at Hollywood Studios) along with a few others that never have seen the light of day yet! I certainly fucking hope Warner will get their asses in gear and put out a 20th anniversary disc of Ruby Vroom, Irresistible Bliss and El Oso especially.
*[LYRICS (The most comprehensibly compiled possible at least)]* [Intro] When you drove out towards East Orange on Good Thursday In the gold mid-80's duster woozy swerving [Chorus] A river by the spin tonight, well I got lost in the parking lot, well Sheep shank, you must slip the knot, well I got lost in the parking lot, well [Verse 1] 20 for; 81 against, yeah Gotta tap, tap, but leave some tension Bought up tight, and I'm clenching, yeah Stand upright, but don't have the gumption [Hook] A river by the spin tonight, well I got lost in the parking lot, well Sheep shank, you must slip the knot, well I got lost in the parking lot, well Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking... [Final Chorus] A river by the spin tonight, well I got lost in the parking lot, well Sheep shank, you must slip the knot, well I got lost in the parking lot, well Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking Don't go wreck the car Don't go wrecking... If you have any better suggestions for lyrics (replace something, or change some phrasing, lemme know. The lyrics for this song need to be known once and for all).
"and everybody spins a naught, well i got lost in a parking lot. sheepshank i must slip the knot, well i got lost in the parking lot." naught=zero. Spin zero is a quantum physics thing when describing particles. (not going to pretend I understand the concept, but it's a thing). sheepshank is a type of knot that is notorious for slipping. knowing Doughty's writing style, i really doubt he'd rhyme knot with "not". he'd (try) to play with the words a bit more. so i'm pretty confident he's using "naught" in that first sentence.
@Terry Hintz I mean. Let's be honest. Doughty has said numerous times that his lyrics in soul coughing don't have very much "meaning" and are just jumbled phrases of nonsense and "samples" of sentences. I wouldn't worry about it making sense. But I'm failing to here "tonight". Maybe in the first chorus I can hear it slightly. But every chorus, the "night" does not have vowel shape for an "I". If the lyric is tonight, he's purposely butchering the pronunciation. Which I wouldn't put it past him, he's done that before. But I personally don't think this is the case. Also the t at the beginning of tonight is non existent. "Spin-zah-not" is what he's saying in every chorus. Whether that's spins a knot, spins a naught, spins a not, or even spins or not, I can't say for sure. But I do find it very unlikely that it's tonight. Anyone tried asking him? Haha.
@Terry Hintz also I believe Wolfgang Paulo came up with the principal that relates to spin 0 in 1925, and in 1940 expanded it. So spin 0 was a concept long before the song. Does that mean doughty would write a lyric saying "spins a naught", no. Haha. But still. Maybe. Also naught just means zero, maybe he meant "spins a naught" as just spinning in a circle and it has nothing to do with any science at all. Haha.
LMAO so i've listened to this song 50 times and i can't find lyrics anywhere (i'm sure he's not even saying shit for some of it anyway) but HERE YOU GO!!!! this is my interpretation: when you drove out towards ???????? thursday/ in the gold mid-80s duster roads a'swerving / a fever but he spends the night well i got lost in the parking lot well sheepshank i must slip the knot well i got lost in a parking lot well / 24-81 against yeah / gotta stop stop relieve some tension / bought up sight and i'm cleansing yeah / stand up right but don't have the gumption / a fever but he spends the night / well i got lost in the parking lot well / sheepshank i must slip the knot well / i got lost in a parking lot well / don't go wreck the car / don't go wrecking
+Carriebees - (carrie joy) when you drove out towards East Orange (town in Northern New Jersey, also referenced on 2005's Haughty Melodic with the song Bustin' Up A Starbucks) on Good Thursday
Hard to pick between the two. I think the "slip the knot" refrain here is the POV of Mike as a junkie, whereas the Grey Ghost version is Mike trying to not be a junkie. But I think they are mostly on the same topic here, just two different sides of a decision Mr. Doughty made to be alive. my 2 cents
I think this is a bit of a call and response joking, to tmbg's "moving to the sun" and cakes's "alpha beta parking lot"... but i have nothing but my interpretations of those songs to go by.
Were you there?? Bro if so you HAVE To tell us more. This is literally like one of my favorite tracks by them I might be their biggest fan who was born The year they broke up

Dang lol flew over my head
More than a little bit. I’m picking up what you’re putting down.

In this day AND in this age, Soul Coughing needs to make a new album!
"Just wreck it, you've insured the thing"
Nice
Yeah, but this is the insurance company singing
This song is beautiful I wish they recorded it
i still feel like soul coughing is underrated
they are
Nothing has changed in 12 years it’s still just as under rated
It’s just perfectly perfect… not too popular or mainstream, not ever forgotten….
i wish these guys were still together
i got good news
Great song

@Terry Hintz Thanks! Honestly it’s either or. I’m hearing both playing it back over and over, though your reasoning to why makes sense.

@Terry Hintz maybe he did donuts in a parking lot which left circles in the pavement. Zeros and naughts.

and i think its "everybody spends the night well" not "fever"
The start of the morphing of Grey Ghost.
