What types of border crossing troubles have you run into, if any? Thx for watching :) Info, in-person meetups, campouts, Zoom chat, and more at www.GoSmallLiveLarge.com
Canada was good to me. My issues is always airports in the United States. I've literally been searched in uniform at LAX with orders from Camp Lejeune to 29 Palms.
Once I entered the USA from Canada on a small town road and passed the Border station, slowed down, and thought it was closed and motored on. Bad idea, LOL! They called the cops, who pulled us over and asked why we refused to stop at the BP Station? Turns out the windows were tinted on the booth, and there was someone there waving at me. 🤷🏽♂️ He drove us back and it was no big deal. Another time they asked if they could search my car, I responded do I have a choice? And then the fun started, police, dogs, the happiest tail wagging dog who peed on 3 of 4 tires, they said it signaled, they searched, and searched, an hour plus later another officer comes up and asks me what I have hidden, as they haven’t found anything. I said “nothing,” he asked why I refused a search and I said “Refused? I just asked him if I had a choice. He didn’t answer and y’all showed up.” He was not amused.
Had to eat a bowl full of pitted cherries going into California from Nevada, since I had no proof that they didn't come from Virginia. Apparently there was some disease in Virginia that year.
LOL! Scott, I’ll have you know that some years ago I took a box of cherry tomatoes (from Mexico) that I bought in Minnesota, into Ontario and back into Minnesota the next day! Knowing that if they’re going to search your rig, opening the fridge is standard procedure, I told them. Being a small town crossing, the US lady was as nice as the Canadians, but doing her job, she did send us for secondary inspection. The next nice old lady came out and talked to us about our trip, and said she didn’t need to see our tomatoes! I think the lesson is to avoid the busy crossings, especially returning to the US. I’ve been through that Port Huron one, and it’s crazy!
Scott, you would cry if I tell you about my border crossing with my big RV. They tore it apart. Then I had to put everything back where it belonged. I was there for 10 hours. Terrible. BTW it was 2001 pre 911.
I just crossed with my Promaster into Chile, my twelfth border on our way to Ushuaia at the bottom of Argentina. They are all just bureaucrats and if you have the paperwork and a decent attitude it all works out. I wish people would stop being scared; happiness does not come from fear.
Many years ago. (Late 80s I think), my father, three brothers, brother in law and I went on s fishing trip to Canada. We had two vehicles and were also Pulling a boat. Coming back on our way home we were pulled of to the side and told to wait whi l e they searched our vehicles. Tore apart our luggage, fishing gear etc. And found one cigarette butt in my brother's tackle box and tested it for Marijuana. Just a cigarette butt with a filter obviously nothing illegal. We spent several hours and finally told me could leave. No apologies no pleasantries, just did it because they could. After getting down the road a few miles we stopped and secured our gear and repacked all our belongings (strewn all over the back of my pickup with a topper. We never got an explanation. Just a bunch of assholes.
We got stopped in the 80's coming back in. We'd been tent camping, husband had longish hair and a beard. And most stupidly, he had a bit of weed in the car. They immediately searched the ashtray, found some and pulled us over. However, the agent was civil and said, if you have anymore, just give it to us or we have to search your entire car and everything in it. Husband gave him the little bit he had, we had a small fine and were on our way. I was pretty stressed as this was obviously more of an issue than a houseplant, but it didn't cause any further problems. Let's just say, we scrubbed that car clean after that experience!
The nuts and seeds are a surprise to me, and as a vegan, that's taking my calories away, so I guess I'd have to pre-plan purchasing them and consuming them because they're expensive!
We used to live in northern Vermont and drove up to Canada to catch the Queen’s Highway to Detroit to visit family. This was years ago pre 911, but never had issues going into Canada but always had issues getting back into the U.S.. They are just nasty and snarky. Don’t know why, they just are! We live in Connecticut now so we stay in the states, but never will forget those rude Americans working the border! 🇺🇸🤦🏻♀️🇨🇦
Sounds so similar to my experience. Snarky is the nicest adjective I could give the agents. Sent inside. Got the silent treatment. They searched the vehicle and the luggage. Took over an hour and then simply "dismissed".
@MGKLauer They can control their border as they see fit . Likely they were treating you as potential threat until they satisfied themselves otherwise . You likely arose their suspicion.
@@sarahann530 yeah, I can see where a couple from Nebraska in an SUV with two suitcases would be suspicious. They were filling their quota and exhibiting their authority. We need way more border guards to monitor such suspicious characters. I assume you've crossed the border several times yourself.
Employees tend to treat customers the way management treats them. Just look at their management for the border patrol. I bet it sucks to work there An important part of touring prospective business partners is to look at the Employees. Are they happy and cheerful? Go to the employee rest room and break area. Is it clean and well kept or a mess. That will show how a company treats their employees.
We used to get treated pretty poorly coming back into the US from Canada back in the late 80s and early 90s. I always thought the poor treatment was a result of our race. But now I just realized that those agents just hate their job.

Well what the… I wonder how they treat non-US citizens? Wow…

Thanks Scott. What a bad day! So sorry this happened to you. Really enjoyed this video for the advice and how how to handle the border
Excellent info, thanks!
A few years ago we had a very similar situation for one small lime!😀Got read the riot act and yep, given that same piece of paper.

They all have a job to do enforcing controls at their countries borders . Van life does not make you special
A great way to not be hassled going into Canada is not to even go there…your story and others are really making me have second thoughts…🙄
Big guy in jail asks "what are you in for?"
Your response, "I brought some plants across an imaginary line!"
Enjoying your “new” way. Best to you🌺🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇺🇸🌎🌏🌍
We went to the border, in an rv. Showed them our passports and license and registration. After 1 hour of waiting we got a go

Howdy Scott, stay safe out there. Love from Canada

I'm sorry Scott... but you made this video and I see PLANTS behind you!!!! 😆
Just went through customs and had problems.

I hope the BP guys were hot. That would make the experience worth it!!

Thanks Scott! Great info, but so sorry you had to get “spanked” by those grouchy people!

I thought Americans wanted tough border checks ?
It was their attitude, especially the lack of communication in telling us where to go and what to do, that was disturbing.

Niagara is a long wait as well. I love Canada and enjoy visiting but I am almost thinking flying would be easier.
