Rio Haryanto: Where Is He Now?

- Rio Haryanto was the first Indonesian Formula One driver, but his career wasn't really indicative of a future world champion. When he left F1, he's still done some racing here and there, so I set out to answer the question: where is Rio Haryanto now?

in my opinion, this guy is actually better than Gelael. He just didn't has a financial backing as strong as Gelael does.
Rio is way better than gelael lmaoo
OF COURSE HE'S BETTER!!!😡
He is much better, just one of those drivers who is okay, but not good enough for F1

No shit. Rio made it to F1

Mazepin just a "tool" to keep haas on f1
It's kinda shame really because Danil Kvyat is from Russia and he's a better driver

That 2016 Manor car actually looked so good tho shame it handled like a cruise ship
idk how pepsi didn't copyright strike that livery

Haryanto is miles better than Gelael, Gelael just becomes a "senior" F2 driver, Haryanto needs more funding and probably a better sponsor. I think he's deserve F1 seat
He is better than Gelael but not F1
@@monyet82 He should have done more racing in Europe. He probably lost most of his interest after his demotion.
He's good, but not enough for F1. Skill wise (Pretty good, but not as good as the current line-up, except Mazespin) and financial wise (You know when you are good but not enough, you can helped by money).
Him deserving an F1 seat is yet to know imo due to his career being cut short by lack of funding iirc, but if you compare Gelael to him I agree that he deserves it more
@@billysino At least Rio got F1 seat, even if it's short.
Tbh the government sponsorship is not drying up. It’s just the parliament doesn’t want to fund him (Obv my government is ultra corrupt). But funny that they still fund Gelael (It’s more backroom deal). And his stationary company is the biggest in Indonesia, not ur small shop 😂
Gelael is funded by his dad who owns KFC Indonesia and not funded by the government if I know correctly
@@ColdHatch his dad funded him. But the government also help him till now. Likes of Pertamina and BNI (the state’s oil company rig, and national bank) help him. I know Bcause I’m Indonesian 😂

I honestly respect him for getting as far as he did. Most F1 drivers come into the sport though the same routes which usually favour drivers from europe. It's notoriously difficult for drivers to break into F1 from countries that haven't had a driver before so being the first Indonesian F1 driver is something he can be proud of, even if his career didn't last long or garner any points.
Well, he good, but he's not enough for F1. Skill wise and financial wise. He got beaten by his teammate. But he is one of the best Asian Racer tbf. Maybe it'll be like :
1. Albon
2. Yuki
3. Rio
@@fabian.a.p I think there are many better asian drivers out there like Kobayashi and Zhou. I also wouldn't call Albon an Asian driver in this context. He races under a thai licence but he was raised in the UK, and came through the UK karting system.

Pain
Maybe he’ll pull a Sato and win a couple Indy 500s in the future
This is painful as an Albon fan but he's probably not ever going to get back into f1. At least if he never achieves anything of major significance we can still be happy knowing that he was one of a small percentage of F1 drivers to stand on the podium.
"Shop Assistant" lol..... Kiky is one of the biggest stationery producer in Indonesia where the population is 250+ million people. His company is massive
And still haven't MiniDrivers for using their version of Haryanto as notebook covers.
It's not really that big considering how low the popularity this company is.

You should make a series like "Forgotten Drivers" which contains episodes about Enrique Bernoldi, Antonio Pizzonia, Robert Doornbos, Patrick Friesarcher, Tiago Monteiro, Christijan Albers, Alex Wurz, Christian Klien, Gaston Mazzacane, and of course Markus Winkelhock
Well, I’ve already made one on Winkelhock, and I’ll see if I can make a series :)
Some of these drivers find success in other categories
And of course Mark Plourde.
@@taufiqutomo Never heard that name before, what year he raced in?
@@HeinzlerHZ Within the Indycar community, Plourde is the lost driver whose legend says that if he ever shows up, the entire grid will scream in fear. Such is his ability - or at least that's what the legend says.
In reality he's an Indycar meme, he used to maintain a website pretending to be Champ Car World Series' official page until 2016, eight years after the series is officially gone. And in that website, he posts race results (probably from a sim) and crowns himself champion multiple times. Won Champ Car World Series four consecutive times right after Bourdais left for F1.
I've been wondering about this for years now ever since he left F1. It feels like after he left F1, news about him just went silent....... (for me at least), the hype from Indonesian fans just sort off went silent. And i never heard about him again until this video
yea.... all the hype got off real quick here in Indonesia, probably bcos first, almost everyone only knew him as the first Indonesian f1 driver and just forgot abt him. Secondly, almost everyone watches badminton and football here, and if we're talking abt motorsports, we all watches motogp most of the time. And the last ones probably bcos of the media coverage isn't as big as gelael's

I met Rio once.. such a humble guy. gotta love him!
When I heard we, Indonesians finally got an F1 driver on the track I was really happy. Some months later... never heard of him... until this video got reccomended that I remembered we had a driver. Talk about a short lived dream...
To be honest, seeing him race in F1 has made Indonesians proud, even if fate says something else
As an Indonesian I give you my full support for giving an honest opinion on our drivers. It will give the constructive criticism we need to improve. A lot of Indonesian people were making a huge scene at the chess community the other day only to be found out that their chess player causing all the drama certainly cheated lol.
Aaarrrgghhh... No indonesian formula e riders allowed again
I remember when there's a Crowdfunding Campaign so that Rio can keep racing in F1 after Hungarian Grand Prix. But it was failed.
Yeah because it was only get 57000 euros (IDR 1000000000)
ini sama bukan sih yang kayak sms gitu? dulu gua dapet sms iklan dari timnya doi minta bantuan dana buat balapan di f1, kalo gak salah goceng paling kecil
My favourite Rio Haryanto memory is that in a F1 Grand Prix in which is either didn't finish, or at least didn't finish well, he still won the F1 Driver of the Day award because Indonesians flooded the online vote. F1 changed the timeframe in which people could vote on the award not long after.
I really enjoy these kind of videos could you do Kobayashi because he’s gone onto have a success story
Good Lord saves you, and prevents you from insulting angry Indonesian internet army. It's unfortunate that Indonesian has been so infamous in this regard.
Anyway, it will be pleasing to see Haryanto competing in classic World Challenge Endurance event like Pokka 1000, Bathurst 12 Hours, and Spa 24 Hours. However it seems that financial backing remains the problem.
Had rio had geleals funding he definitely would have been in the sport longer then 12 races. Maybe Manor would still be around if he had Sean’s funding.
I've been following him since 2009, read on the newspaper about his wildcard entry at Formula BMW Europe at Monza where he didn't finish a race due to suspension damage and Felipe Nasr won the race. Then he competed on the higher levels.
In terms of lower formulae results, it was good but not at Grosjean, Hulkenberg or Leclerc level where they won titles every year. Some people say in mid 2010s GP2 weren't as strong as other seasons which they used it as a reason to why Joleon Palmer won the title but as said here he didn't get a competitive team until his final season.
I'm proud of him, he's our best driver, statistically, and the first to race in F1 for our country. I admit I cried happy tears when he was announced he'd race for Manor. It was a dream come true for us Indonesian motorsport fans. But I'm a bit disappointed that he hasn't been racing a lot now. If only he signed for FE in 2017 or Superformula, not just testing. The team in GT series was found by his friend successful businessman David Tjiptobiantoro and Singaporean driver Gregory Teo. Sadly, they didn't race in Asian Le Mans earlier this year, I don't know why.
Another thing I'm really disappointed of is that lack of concept and understanding among the people in general discredited him, very bad. People who had no idea of F1 screamed his participation was a waste of money, while they thought it should have been allocated for donations, building bridges, schools, and everything that had no correlations at all. He was sponsored by Pertamina, the state owned petrol company, they weren't the Social Affair ministry who were responsible of helping the poor. See how absurd that was. Too bad for him, the media highlighted that matter and the people mostly failed to understand as they largely only read the headlines of each articles. That's why some people falsely don't like him.
I've met him near his house at Solo, he calmly greeted me while walking his dog, such a humble guy.
Great video man was thinking about him a few days ago
4:00 HAHAHA
Fair video. When I was watching GP2 back in the day I certainly didn't think Rio looked out of place, he was respectable at that level and could potentially of had a decent career in sports cars. Kind of a shame how its ended up but not everyone can say they were an F1 driver so there's certainly worse careers to have.
i remember reading the news all going crazy when rio haryanto got a podium, and then i was like
wait us, indonesians, got an actual gp2 driver? ok lol, good for him
and then proceeds to forget that ever happening until this video lol
Don't mind me just commenting to boost the algorithm here. As per usual tho, very interesting video man

well being a f1 driver from Indonesia is actually an achievement by itself, because we not have a proper racing driver development system in here
smh the government only cares about football and badminton
@@ajemajh badminton I can understand with the achievement we have, but football? really?
motorsport culture in Indonesia, compared to even badminton or football, is way too irrelevant to start with. You need multiple regions to be involved in the culture (which might happen with new Indonesian tracks/circuits coming up).
I would say that the unfortunate fire in his father's factory is one of the main reason we never heard of him again.
Such an informative chuckle. Thank you RUclips for the channel intro =)
Where did you come from, where did you go,
where did you come from Haryanto?
To be honest, I don't think he was cut out for F1 at all. He did well in Asian junior series but apart from a couple of victories in GP3 and a fourth place in GP2 the year Vandoorne obliterated the competition, he barely registered as F1 material on the international scene. Great video regardless, John. I'm always impressed with your editing skills.

Yeah. He's actually living a better life inheriting his father's company; the biggest stationery business in Indonesia. Considering how unlucky his career was in F1, I think it was the better life choice. I would blame Manor as the biggest letdown to his potential, and some of his own mistakes did ruin his reputation, which doesn't help things...
@@X1erra i’d blame the government more, they have Rio the bare minimum but funds Sean Gelael’s career until now still.. but considering the family’s connections to the government, its not even a surprise.

Glad to hear it!
I never underestimated F1 driver although they are at the last position. At a speed of 250- 300 km /hour, if you brake one second too fast than Lewis Hamilton then you are already left 70 meter behind.
Haryanto was a decent driver, might be able to showcase his talent with a more competitive car as shown on his 2015 GP2 season. But the fact he was beaten up by Wehrlein so badly, it's either Haryanto is actually not that good, or Wehrlein is just exceptional.
Unfortunately Haryanto isn't good enough for F1, but i think if he getting a chance to be in Formula 1 again for at least 2 seasons, he will improve his skill and finally will do decent job in F1. I'm not gonna say he's bad racing driver, the fact that he wins some race and get podiums in Gp2 is pretty much good enough for me to say he's decent racing driver, and of course better than Sean Gelael.
a bit of both, but long story short, Haryanto was never F1 material. Still 10 times better than Gelael though
Not the forget you mentioned Rio's best quali at Baku but yeah he struggled alot in the blue flags he'd stay in pack in the beginning of the race but he dies off as soon hes lapped... big problem
Respect doesn't cost you money......respect your fellow human being
I'm still salty over what the Sky Sports F1 commentators, the one you always see on screen, said something like this years ago before Rio Haryanto began his debut on F1 grid=
"Rio Haryanto? heh (small laugh), what's he gonna bring to the table?"
I know he's not gonna win straightaway and have difficulties progressing with how F1 works, but hey, it is an achievement in itself for him.
Almost made me sent a hate e-mail to them.

Haryanto actually attended Formula E Test in Valencia back in 2017, But he never made it to Formula E.
@@petrolweeb Yes, It's a shame. While just just.... ok F2 driver, Gelael got himself a seat on Jota WEC.
@@bullracing1 Gelael bring "chicken" to Jota WEC.
Sean and Rio should team up for endurance racing. Maybe add Gio as the third driver for old time's sake
Make video about f2 johan Dhariwala 🤔🤔
I quite liked the livery of Manor. Was a shame they didn't have the funds compared to the other teams. Woulld have loved to still see them in F1.
I’d love to see a video about what happened with Wehrlein. Obviously I know that he’s doing a good job in Formula E but he did wonders in that Manor and I’ve always wondered why F1 didn’t really work out for him
Wehrlein was originally set to drive with Mercedes for 2017, But eventually Bottas was picked because Bottas has more experience.
It's a shame that Wehrlein's F1 Career ended early. He's the sole point scored on Manor 2016 and Sauber 2017.
@@petrolweeb Basically same boat with vandoorne and de vries
Rightly or wrongly he developed a bit of a reputation for having an attitude while in F1 which meant teams baulked at giving him a drive.
