  • While Dustin and the rest of us here at Electrician U tend to work very hard at coming up with interesting topics and producing quality videos and instruction, sometimes we just get a bit silly and need to blow off a little steam! In this episode, our video editor Drake from Descant Music and Video sent Dustin a “care package” of “best gifts for electricians”, didn’t tell him what was coming, and had him open the packages while on camera. Very entertaining to say the least!

First on the unveiling, a multi-tool pen set, which seems like it would be a very practical and useful gift for any tradesman or woman! Complete with pen/pencil, LED flashlight, super small Phillips and straight blade screwdriver, ruler, stylus, and a level one would think it has appeal to the tradesperson, so Dustin rates it a 6 on a scale of 1-10 as it is a bit hokey, and most electricians would already have most of these items on their person daily anyway.
Next up, a multi socket that will cover many different sizes without having to change from one size to the next. While good in theory as you wouldn’t have to carry your entire socket set to the work area, Dustin is gracious in his 9.6 rating as it didn’t drive the smaller headed screws very well and the thing started falling apart about 20 seconds into the test on literally the second screw! I would NOT spend the money on this tool Epic Fail.A magnetic wristband is the next item to be tested. The wristband wraps around your wrist and has several strips of magnets that can hold your fasteners ON your wrist, without having to hold them IN your hand, freeing that up to steady your work. Dustin gives it an 8 out of 10 as it does in fact seem very useful in theory and the magnets are super strong. My favorite- LED outdoor gloves! Poor light placement, poor battery/switch location, and the fact that they are not really even gloves at all gives this tool a rating of 13.73542! While they do light up a darkened work area, they just are not practical in any way, offer zero protection, and are a Gimmick!! Save your money folks. Next thing to run the gauntlet, is a multi-purpose laser level. There are several good levels available on the market these days from manufacturers like Klein, Bosch, and Milwaukee so this thing has some big shoes to fill if it is going to be able to stand up against the others. Not to mention, after the last failure in the LED gloves, we need something good to carry us along! At first glance, it looks like it would be a perfect tool for someone who is into multi-purpose gadgets and not any self-respecting tradesperson, and after the testing, you would be correct in that assumption. The tool is not of quality craftsmanship, the tape measure will not stand out past a couple feet, nor will it retract without having to force it back in by hand. A 1.5 is all that Dustin is willing to rate the tool (which is a vast improvement from the last tool!) and would not suggest this as a companion to your other tools in your tool bag. A flat multi-tool that you could carry in your pocket or wallet is the next item to be tested. It has several different tools that you could potentially use box/letter opener, ruler, cell phone stand, nut sizer, bottle opener, and several others that I am not sure what they could be used for. What it's NOT labeled on the list of usefulness of this tool is as a Throwing Knife! So, if you are out there somewhere in the world and in need of some protection, you could always throw the tool you have in your pocket at your attackers and perhaps make enough of a distraction to escape?

Instead of that wristband, I get a TON of use out of "the bit pouch" - and wrap one around all my impacts. The pouch is nice, but I might use the magnet on it even more. Much prefer it over the wrist magnets.

I got a set of those fingertip light glove thingies on Amazon lightning deal for $2.99. The lights do go on the outside of your hand. Used them till the batteries run out. Uses 2032s, dumped them because they used $4 in batteries in 2 hours

    • @Kirk_N
      @Kirk_N 2 года назад +3

I agree. I got some as a gift. They worked pretty well, when they worked, but the expensive batteries made them impractical. Also, he did have them on the wrong hands, the light and button goes on the back of the hand.

So now bs, my gf got me that exact same magnet wristband a couple months ago. I use it for overhead tasks like fastening brackets, messing with light fixtures (wire nuts also stick to it), and stapling wires. Only downside: you cant put bulky stuff on it because if you flick your wrist they will fly off. I also put my bits on it, I have a robbie, ph #2, and 5/16 chuck i use often and the 5/16 will fly off if i flick my wrist hard.

Love the channel, definitely one of my favorites. Just had a comment about the led gloves.... Although I do find them "gimmicky" for lack of better words, they are meant to be worn the on the opposite hands so the light is on top of your finger and thumb lol. Totally not a Spiderman situation, although it's a cooler idea, its not a practical application as discovered lol.
I do a lot of my own mechanical work on my/my families vehicles and sometimes, welllll shit happens and you run out of daylight!! Lol. My kids have these stupid little dollar store led finger lights and not gonna lie, they've come in handy when the trouble light just isn't going where ya need it and the child labour.....I mean helpers 😅 are swinging your light everywhere but in the right way, are over it or are in bed for the night lmao ....they work when a trouble light or head lamp just won't do and both hands are required so a flash light is out too! 💁‍♂️😂

I’d suggest you consider a video on selecting and installing a manual transfer switch and sub panel for an emergency generator. The universal socket does work on normal nuts and bolts but you found the biggest weakness which is anything that has a round base and that it doesn't do any strong tightening. I've found plenty of use out of mine but it certainly isn't a for all uses. I give it more of a 5 of 10 not the fail.

On a non-gag line, the Electrical Combination Tip screw drivers to work with the Electrical Combination Head, that are on nearly all devices now. I understand the manufacturers came up with the head design to meet teh requirements, of the NEC and the Canadian version. What I can’t figure is why it took a couple of decades for any of the tool folks to actually come up with drivers that fit the head. Seems like every building I go into has at least a couple of devices that some jackwad has buggered up using a Phillips screwdriver.

That universal driver probably works better on straight bolts. Without that flat round bit below the hex. Still a silly thing if you've git a real set.

Anything with too many functions is a dead giveaway that it sucks! Lol. The only multifunction tools you can use is a stripper/pliers or needle nose combo or a good set of Leathermans. I’d rather have a set of tools that are great at 1 or 2 things each than a single tool that does 10 things like shit!

The stupid hammer thing should be rebranded as the Popeil Pocket Craftsmen and sold on TV, they would sell millions. You have to be over 45 to get the Popeil reference.

Man, I'm really glad you showed the universal socket. I've talked to all the guys at work about it and they've been interested too. Now I know it's a sham. What a shame, a great idea gone bad 😂

I've seen them advertised for quite sometime but never had a chance to try it. Actually thought it would be useful but he changed my mind on that thought lol

We should start a real thread on cool gifts any electrician or general tradesmen would really like! None of these gimmicky trash tools that would either break or live the rest of their lives in a throwaway tackle box (which is where I’d use that hammer multi tool!) just so you can say you use them to not hurt anyones feelings! 😆

      1) Would definitely have to be some EU Merch!
      2) Home Depot gift card
      3) More power tool batteries
      4) Leatherman or nice pocket knife
      5) Quality boots
      6) Tool bags or tool belts (I like my Veto bag) but I’ve had Klein and Milwaukee bags that work good too. These must be quality tho
      7) warm clothes like sweaters and rainproof jackets (tool branded clothing looks good on a job site)
      Anyone wanna add to this?
