  • In this rambly and bad video I finally share some more impressions with the Librem 5 and the next release of PureOS, which is based on Debian 11 "Bullseye" and has the name "Byzantium".
I also go into a massive tangent about AppStream metadata and custom Purism additions that define form factors an app support, which I believe should be more widely adapted.
Note that Byzantium is not meant for end-users yet and thus all imperfections that you can see may well be fixed before its release. The part about Megapixels and the camera is to be taken with massive grains of salt, I just compiled the app from repositories at source.puri.sm without knowing too well what I am doing nor asking for help.

Disclosure: I am a co-host on the bi-weekly PineTalk Podcast (www.pine64.org..., a PINE64 community podcast. This is pro-bono community work and I try my best to make sure that this work does not affect my view on the PINE64 products or competing Linux Phones in any way.
    Chapters TBD

Thanks for showcasing the Librem 5 again. This is the version that includes encrypting the device, yes? Did it prompt you for a key?

My install is a few weeks old, so I can’t really say too much about the current state. If you grab a LUKS image from Librem 5 CI, everything is/was a manual process: Expanding it to use the entire eMMC (which I did), change the pass phrase (default is 123456) and encryption key (which I didn’t bother with, as I rather have the PinePhone with me because of it‘s better battery life because of working suspend). If I recall the Librem 5 chat correctly, Purism are going to change this, and are planing to come up with an implementation similar to what postmarketOS offer.
As always, there is no ETA, but it might come with or soon after the switch to Byzantium, which I would place sometime around September/October as the Debian 11 Bullseye release might happen in September (according to Martin Wimpress on the Ubuntu Podcast).

I am still waiting for mine. Also I tried to check out the build images, and the ones for qemu-x86_64 are not available now. They do build according to logs, but then at the very end there is some error, and there are no images to download. The ones for librem 5, I could try in qemu-system-aarch64, but I checked -M help, and there is no Freescale i.MX8 there, nor Purism Librem 5 to select, so it will probably not work too well in generic qemu machine type.

Category for Mobile. Most menus use category based displays, having a "Mobile" category could help, maybe?

Not really, I think that would be worse than Purism’s approach. These categories have a meaning, and putting anything that supports mobile form factor in a mobile category would not go well, especially not with an ever growing number of mobile apps.

On the Librem 5? As far as I know, neither has been ported (yet).
