PureOS seems significantly faster than the last few times I had seen it. Honestly, pretty exciting. It’s expensive but I may get it just for the support of a good Linux phone that respects personal privacy. It should also be strong enough to run emulators, so you can get a good controller and probably do portable emulation without the need for Android. I think the only potential issue is the thickness if you wanted to use something like the Gamesir X2 with it (which should just be an xinput USB C controller, so it should otherwise just work). Thanks for demonstrating!
I just received mine after having waited for more than 4 years (in Europe). And the first impressions are just a disaster: slow operation, buggy screen, buggy reactions, no connectivity with the local operator (uding a valid active SIM card), too heavy, unpractical GUI. The whole experience with this strange company is that you just deal with scam: unacceptable postponing of the delivery, promise to refund the purchase (due to too long delivery) not kept.
Seeing how much more smooth it is, I'm quite excited to receive mine! Is the front screen glass or plastic like the pinephone? And does it come with a screen protector?
It's glass, and I think that it does come with a screen protector, which seems to be removed on mine. Maybe it wasn't applied properly (like on Gardiner Bryant's Librem 5) and the previous owner removed it.. Don't know.
Be aware that you'll be waiting quite a bit. Their website says you'll get it "in a few months", and has been saying that for quite a while now. But right now they're still shipping out the crowdfunding phones from September 2017. Should speed up after that though, since most orders were from the early stages of the crowdfunding campaign (2017), so they'll have less orders to work through once those are shipped. There's also an issue with chip shortage due to Corona affecting the supply chain. Not sure if they managed to resolve that or not. And finally, Chinese New Year is coming up, that always slows things down, and it'll be interesting to see if they end up with another Corona wave what with all the Chinese traveling all over the country to visit family in other regions. Not saying you shouldn't order, but manage your expectations. :) I'd say, stop by on the Purism forums if you're not there already, to get the latest news on shipping.
7:09 "Why.. would you do that?" lol. Not much on chess eh? Was actually waiting on you to do this video (based on the name I knew it was coming). Very smooth scrolling on the browser. Impressive. A great look at the Librem 5!
They don’t preinstall a music player or an maps app - but ship that Chess. That’s my point. If they insist on shipping on game, I bet Animatch or 2048 would make more people happy. (Also, Chess makes me miss my grandpa, despite him being dead for more than 10 years.)
The camera does not work yet, it's in process of being enabled, see source.puri.sm/Librem5/linux-next/-/issues/43 and source.puri.sm/Librem5/linux-next/-/issues/44. Therefore I can't possibly demo it. The microphone is fine, I'll try to make another Librem 5 video soon and can demo it then. It's a Linux Phone, you can skip updates here. But given software is such an early state of development, you really should not.
It’s frustrating. Manjaro and Ubuntu Touch seem much more close to prime time than this. It’s like they want it to have the look and feel of their Gnome-based computers, which places Librem ‘behind’ the best of Linux phone OSes. I don’t need loads of stupid apps. A Linux computer computer that’s a phone too, plenty fast, and has convergence and enough polish is my holy grail. We’re close... so close. But not there yet.
I know that there are Java (non ME) games that can run on it, see wiki.mobian-project.org/doku.php?id=shattered-pixel-dungeon. But there are projects like freej2me (github.com/hex007/freej2me) that should work on Linux Phones like the PinePhone and the Librem 5.
Nobody knows, even Purism say they don't know. But given October 20th, 2017 orders ship in may, I would guess that it's going to be at least September or maybe the unitl end of this year. You could however try to get one of these on eBay or another marketplace for used items to be faster.
This is awesome, I can't wait to see what experiments you'll run on that Librem 5 in the future!
Congrats on reaching 1k subs, btw. You deserve it!
Thank you!

Thanks for the great video showing this phone. I plan to order one next month. Your review was helpful.

If the SIM and SD card insert from the side, on that SIM/SD tray, what's that slot at the top of the battery for?
It’s for a 3FF smart card.
Dude do a speedtest with pinephone and librem
Didn't review the camera and microphone.
And, did it force you to update or you cloud skip?

Would you mind to inform what's the default search engine and browser default?
Thank you.
The default browser on the Librem 5 is GNOME Web/Epiphany with DuckDuckGo as a default search engine.
Thanks.

Hey @ 3:57 green light appeared, do you the why it appeared?
Because I accidentally hit the power button and turned the Librem 5 on :D
@@LINMOBnet oh ok
- knock, knock
- who is there ?
- CORONA VIRUS !
- (hard breathing)
And that passes for fun in Germany: ruclips.net/video/d3nRFnBEZCc/видео.html

Use Acetone to smoothen your 3D printed PinePhone case
I don't know whether I'll get that just for this, but thanks for the advice!
I want to see plasma mobile on it if possible (just because why not)
I too want to see it, but I first need to explore PureOS some more.
" ...giant box" for a giant price tag
Well, it's pricey, sure, but ... Giant price tag does not apply. High maybe, giant no. Keep in mind they funded the entire development of Phosh.
My Note 4, Z2 Force-Moto and iphone 8+ were $800 each
It’s thicc. I want
Fast fast fast!!!
