This channel is all about Linux on mobile devices. Currently mostly about the PinePhone.
A short look at Plasma Mobile 6
It's early days for Plasma Mobile 6, let's take a quick look!
Demoed on postmarketOS. The images flashed to the OnePlus 6 and PinePhone have been downloaded from postmarketos.org/download/ . Pick "edge" for your device, go Plasma Mobile, and if the image has been created on March 6th, 2024 or later, it should be Plasma 6 already.
Overall, while bugs definitely exist, it's definitely very promising - sorry I did not have time for a more detailed, better planned or edited look.

Upgrading to postmarketOS 22.06 (Phosh) on PinePhone
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.2 года назад
In this video I demo upgrading in a way that's not the recommended way to upgrade to postmarketOS 22.06. You can do it the way I did, but please follow the recommended way: SSH tmux. At least plug your PinePhone into power and use tmux! Please note: You won't magically get new apps that were not installed before - a fresh install of postmarketOS 22.06 with Phosh includes karlender. (It's just a...
The new gesture-based navigation of Phosh 0.20 on the Librem 5

Phosh 0.20 is going to feature a new gesture-based navigation, that feels quite different to what you may be used to. In this video, I demo it on the Librem 5 running Phosh 0.20~beta1. To get it installed on your Librem 5 right now, you have to enable the octarine repository: source.puri.sm/Librem5/developer.puri.sm/-/issues/193 Since this is beta 1, minor details may change until the proper re...
Unboxing another Librem 5 (and a glimpse at LinuxPhoneApps.org)
Просмотров 4,5 тыс.2 года назад
Time for another bad video! This is the unboxing of my Purism Librem 5 I ordered during the campaign on October 23rd - it arrived on March 25th, 2022 (fosstodon.org/@linmob/108018076434351116) and I only did get to unboxing it on May 16th, 2022. What took me so long? LinuxPhoneApps.org (linuxphoneapps.org) may be to blame, which is why I briefly demo it in this video. For reference: My previous...
The fastest mainline Linux Phone: Pocophone F1
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 года назад
After a long work day, let's have a really brief, poorly prepared and rambly look at the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, a Snapdragon 845 powered phone, that now also does phone calls with postmarketOS Edge (and thus can definitely be called a Linux Phone, running Linux 5.17.0-sdm845). Recorded on March 24th, 2022. Links: * Tweet announcing that calls work now: joelselvaraj95/status/1506265673...
Updating PinePhone (Pro) Modem Firmware with GNOME Firmware Updater
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.2 года назад
A short video on how to upgrade the Quectel EG25-G Modem Firmware with postmarketOS edge. This was done on a fresh microSD card install of postmarketOS edge with Phosh. The command to install GNOME Firmware is `sudo apk add gnome-firmware-updater`. Before then navigating through the app to install the Firmware, make sure that your phone is decently charged (battery above 50%) AND plugged into p...

Unboxing the PinePhone Pro Explorer Edition
Просмотров 3 тыс.2 года назад
It's been a while, and... first of all apologies for the audio issues that plague the first six minutes. This was a new recording setup, and things went horribly wrong - you only have one shot at unboxings, and I maybe should have properly tested the Pixel 6 (which tends to overheat, apparently) for a "repeatable" shot. Needless to say that recording and production felt like hell, so if you dis...

Android on the PinePhone: Installing GloDroid
Просмотров 10 тыс.3 года назад
Among the things I did not show on video yet was GloDroid, an AOSP port to (not just) the PinePhone. No, you won't be able to use the PinePhone like an Android phone with this just yet, as nothing Modem related (LTE, mobile data, telephony) works yet. But it might be fun to try, and maybe there is one Android app you need only rarely, but it does not work well enough with Anbox? This video shou...
Librem 5 with PureOS Byzantium: Work in Progress + AppStream Metadata nerdery

In this rambly and bad video I finally share some more impressions with the Librem 5 and the next release of PureOS, which is based on Debian 11 "Bullseye" and has the name "Byzantium". I also go into a massive tangent about AppStream metadata and custom Purism additions that define form factors an app support, which I believe should be more widely adapted. You know Mobian, but did you know that it can also run on the Purism Librem 5? In this video I demo Mobian on the Librem 5, based on the mobian-librem5-phosh-20210319.img nightly image. The procedure of flashing Mobian to the Librem 5 is described on wiki.mobian-project.org/doku.php?id=librem5&s[]=librem5, the specific flash command I used was `./scripts/flash-image board librem5r4 dir mobian`....

PinePhone: Manjaro Plasma Mobile (soon on the KDE Community Edition)
Excuse me, I noticed that there are no comments. Let me fix it.
if the US didnt do stupid bootlocker stuff i would love to do this!
I have an X5. Should I put phosh or plasma-mobile, or something else on it?
I'd start with Phosh, as I had terrible glitches with current Plasma on my Moto G4 Play (similar SoC).
droidian needs an implementation of plasma mobile 6 as well
That's going to be really hard, as Plasma Mobile dropped the code to work with halium/libhybris quite a while ago.
This has strong "we already Android 4 at home" vibes.
Devin seems to be the main person behind the development of Plasma Mobile, so considering he's only working part time on it, and there's only a handful of other contributors, it's still a impressive undertaking. I do wish it was less buggy though.
Some may even be fixed by now in 6.0.2. I'll try my best to post a follow-up soon.
Thay keyboard already got me mad. 2024 and we still have a buggy keyboard for some reason. Starting to lose hope for Plasma Mobile :(
It's a pretty good keyboard IMHO; I am quite happy with maliit. This keyboard stuff is just hard, I recommend watching dcz's FOSDEM talk from thw 2024 FOSS on Mobile dev room. Also, please: Report all the bugs you see in the proper bug trackers (not RUclips comments) - unreported bugs are hard to fix 🙂
@@LINMOBnetThe problem is not input, it's the constant flickering shown in the video. I'll just stick to Phosh, it's way ahead of KDE Plasma Mobile.
@@LINMOBnetjust look at 2:40. It's terrible...
@@softwarelivre2389 That is pretty much a "low-performance device only" problem though.
@@LINMOBnet that couldn't be further from the truth. It has nothing to do with performance, it has to do with buggy and unnecessary resizes. That's a bug.
GloDroid looks dead... is it me or this project won't get updates ? I mean for the PinePhonePro
А почему он а не Я?
¿Any news guys on phosh or any other mobile os worth of doing a video?
There would be a lot, but I have zero time to allocate.
Thanks for this tutorial. I got an error while executing the script for version 0.8.2 and 0.8.1 of glodroid: Invalid sparse file format at header magic Sending sparse 'super' 1/7 (262140 KB) OKAY [ 19.171s] Writing 'super' FAILED (remote: 'No such file or directory') fastboot: error: Command failed FYI: 0.7.6 seems to be the latest version which works with the flash-sd script
Does "USB Camera" app work in GloDroid?
SailfishOS works perfectly as daily driver. And you can install apk's for those who cant do without apps.
My LED becomes green instead of red and nothing happens
1. This is not IT support. 2. If it were, what you supplied is not nearly enough info. Which model of PinePhone do you have? Which release of GloDroid are you trying? Did you install it to eMMC or SD card? LEDs can take all kind of colors, you know :D
You should adjust your screen brightness next time.
Great video. Does the camera work? What about waydroid? After this video I almost bought a used poco f1 since it has great specs but I realised it has an IPS screen. Is that noticeable when compared to OLED screens or do you find it splendid also?
The screen is fine, but admittedly the OnePlus 6 OLED is a lot nicer. Camera does not work yet, but work is happening (it's complicated and will take a while): wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Xiaomi_Poco_F1_(xiaomi-beryllium)#Camera
Shame Firefox on Android doesn't have profiles.
Could i get Pureos on My Galaxy Phone?????????
If you make it work on your own, maybe. But if you want to port a #mobilelinux OS, I'd go with postmarketOS, as they have built it to be easy to port.
1.7666 ghz limit is hellll
Ok, seems comfy if that's hell.
I'm wondering if these can be integrated with LoRa WAN applications.
Excellent video. I'm hoping that these gain more popularity and developers.
This may be a silly question, but do apps like microsoft Teams and Outlook work on this phone?
See my comment on the other video. :)
A levinboot install guide video would be appreciated. 😁 Thanks
A levinboot install guide video would be appreciated. 😁 Thanks
For which device? PinePhone Pro?
Some links for the battery.
Can't we print a cover for the phone that fits??? Someone should know how to do it.
Thanks for the video! What is the battery performance on linux? Do you think it could make it through a day? Have been waiting to try daily driving a linux phone for a while and seeing if I can develop some of the missing pieces and apps myself. Was waiting for the OnePlus 6 to get call support, but it appears we already have it here!
I have a sim card in it, and while I have not attempted to use it as my main Linux Phone yet, it should last long enough (a day) provided the battery has not been killed by the previous owner or you don't use it too excessively. Just try it :)
What best phone for PostmarketOS ?
Did you know that you can install Chromium and with a .desktop script make apps such as Netflix, Messenger, Whatsapp and others?
Yes, I am aware. Sadly, Chromium's wayland support (via the ozone-backend) is not working well with current mobile Linux virtual keyboards (some keys don't work with squeekboard, and it does not work at all with Plasma Mobile's maliit). This makes Chromium Web Apps not much of an option. Also, for working Netflix, you would need Widewine DRM, which AFAIR only exists for 32-bit ARMv7, not 64bit ARMv8, making it matters way more complicated than it should be.
15:00 Forget Android smartphone as laptop replacement, we definitely need more GNU Linux smartphone. That is a much better alternative than Android.
I have two questions: - This is totally mainline and does not need HALIUM or anything? - Can you dual boot postmarket os and android? (Need android for banking stuff, alas) Thanks for an answer!
No halium with postmarketOS or Mobian although ... if you want to, you can use Halium with the Poco F1 (Ubuntu Touch, Droidian...). Dual booting is afaik possible, but I have not looked into it, sorry. You could also try to run your Banking app with Waydroid right on postmarketOS/Mobian/....
@@LINMOBnet Thanks. Banking with waydroid would be great but so far I have not managed to do so...
How to choose the distro you get it shipped with? And can you choose what is engraved on tha back of the phone? I have seen some with the Debian backplate or Arch...
Unless you're in the EU (and can thus buy at pine64eu), you can't choose distros. It's always going to be Manjaro Plasma Mobile. The back cover engravings were a thing during the "Community Editions" era, pre-beta Edition. PINE64 talked about making distribution specific back covers available IIRC, but that never happened (yet).
hi great video weneed more people showing of linux phones can youinstall flatpaks on this phone like signal slack etc
You can install Flatpaks, but only those that are available for the ARM/aarch64 architecture. This means, that for Signal you'll have to use a 3rd party flatpak repo. See linuxphoneapps.org for apps I have successfully run/evaluated; also check beta.flathub.org, which helps with finding out for which architectures a flatpak is available.
Does it keep the equalizer after Linux?
I only use Linux, so I would not know.
How robust is voice and text? I don't use apps, so that's all I need.
I have heard good things, but I am using a Librem 5 currently, so I don't have first hand experience.
@@LINMOBnet do you have any videos about the Librem 5?
@@the-real-zpero Yes.
cant i just use pureos as my ordinary mobile's main os?
If you can get a mainline kernel to run on your ordinary mobile and know how to get that kernel into an existing PureOS image, you can do so. Assuming your device is supported, going with Mobian or postmarketOS is a lot easier though ;-)
Only thing buggy and bulky is this unboxing video.
Okay.
It is time.
For what?
I just want to buy the phone.
@@jonathanmcdonald7512 Ah, ok. It's currently available on PINE64dotcom :-) If you have any questions before buying, feel free to AMA :)
it's promising but termux is enough for me for now
Ok.
Why does every linux phone OS seem so slow? There's nearly a full 2 second after every swipe or tap, is that just the lag of the camera, or is this really the experience people want? (I highly doubt the latter), but it is really what is keeping people (like me) looking for a good alternative. It has to be snappy, and its design has to keep out of my way of what I want to do with it.
If you want fast (with a somewhat regular stack) the original PinePhone is never going to be the right device for you. But, admittedly: You get used to it. The brain needs a bit to adjust expectations, and then you won't stress out about it not being super fast as much. Why is the PinePhone still interesting? Because it's available, well supported, and supported by a boatload of mobile Linux projects; meaning: It's a great device for (monitoring) development.
The Pinephone Pro solves this problem, but it is double the price. Nice and smooth, but expensive... :(
And the camera doesn't work yet on the Pro, lol
Bro you can't even buy these.
Not even used?
@@LINMOBnet i just bought one on ebay for 80€ 20 mins ago :-)
Ugh rough video -_-
Sorry, that it's not up to your standards. What should we (well, I, it's a one dude operation) improve?

I like the phosh welcome screen feature. Thats nice to see. Thanks for doing the stream
