  • A new study done on the Shroud of Turin has found that the purported burial cloth of Jesus is 2,000 years old rather than several hundred years old. This is scandalous, even for some religious people who want religion to be an abstract thing.

I'm an engineer who has designed thermal imaging cameras for many years and I like to do what I call "stupid IR tricks", one of them I refer to as the "shroud of Turin", I take a piece of foam or fabric and wrap my head in it and then take it off and look at it with the thermal camera - the resulting image looks like the shroud's image. Basically, the heat of my face is transferred to the material and remains there for a few minutes. As you say, sort of like a burst of energy. Now how would a Medieval forger know how a burst of energy would transfer from a person's face? My faith doesn't depend on it being real, but my knowledge of energy transfer suggests to me that it is.

I don't know if this was my idea or God's but I decided to leave him alone. But - as his mama I can't "leave it at that" and I knew I would have difficulty not witnessing to him. He loves to read, so I got him several books - 3 for skeptics, the book "More than a Carpenter", one on finding God in the modern world, and I threw in a book about where is God in pain and suffering. I called him and asked him to come over. I gave him the books and said I will not preach at you anymore but I am giving you these in case you ever get curious, and I am always here if you want to discuss it. " He laughed. That is when I told him "As your mama and a Christian I cannot bear the thought of watching you be thrown into the lake of fire. I figured if you wouldn't believe me, maybe one of the authors could at least get him wondering. He looked at the books, saying he probably wouldn't read them, but by the end of the visit he had picked up Timothy Keller's book "The Reason for God" addressed to skeptics, looked through it and said, yeah I'll check this out. A good analogy is this: a man lives behind a dark, opaque curtain. No one has ever seen him, but all who pass by can hear him speak. What he speaks all can hear and understand, and so they are able to know him, despite never seeing him. The man behind the curtain is God, and the people passing by are us. I looked into it though and apparently this cloth has undergone hundreds of thousands of hours of analysis by detractors and supporters alike, (though most seem to be supporters) so OP appears to be at least a little wrong.
I truly believe that The Shroud is the image of Christ because it would be too much of a coincidence for a cloth discovered in the 14th century, which was identified by 14th century scholars as the burial cloth of Christ, to date to the 1st century with modern techniques, however, as far as the evidence you mentioned is concerned, we can't get the "exact amount of flagrum lashes" from a photo negative of the front of someone because during a Roman Scourge, the victim is usually lashed on the back, not the front, also, even if we can definitively prove that this is the burial cloth of a crucified man, that doesn't narrow down _which_ crucified man this was the burial cloth of because more than 100K people were crucified in a similar manner as Christ, so hypothetically, if someone other than Christ were to be crucified and a burial cloth laid over him, the cloth would look like The Shroud and we'd still be having this conversation, none the wiser that this was the image of some other crucified man.

He walked with authority yet humbly, he said thankyou and nodded his head. His voice was powerful yet gentle. The clouds stood still in front of the sun for 20 minutes. My heart for the first time felt at home, I felt like he was my husband and I knew him. I all of a sudden smelt something I can only describe as sweet smelling incense. I could not look at his face as i sat and saw his hands and wrists which were had many scars and big round scars around his hand and wrist area. As I got off the bus he disappeared. They estimate it would take a pulse lasting one *forty billionth* of a second of uv radiation on the order of several billion watts of power. Clearly, obviously supernatural. Cannot be done by modern man. Probably the single most amazing part of the shroud. It broke the carbon bonds of the top layer of the fibrals, turning them into double-bonds.

It is not your theory, you heard it it before and seemingly might not remember you have, because some years ago, i watched a documentary or few about the shroud with the latest findings at that time, and i recall it was either in those documentaries or perhaps a excerpt of those documentaries where one or two Bible believing scientists were speculating to the effect that when Jesus entered back into His earthly flesh body, there could have been a flash of His light that transformed the body into the glorified body that He was in after resurrecting, the same body that the Apostles witnessed etc, which therefore might explain the shroud's image.

@@chadb9270 Right... Well do you have a better explanation for how something like that could have happened 2000 years ago, when we would struggle to do it today? Also we have no other evidence of this happening to a different burial shroud do we? So it seems to be a one off, and it seems to be something people couldnt do back then... Sooo either we have some extremely rare event that happens to coincide with when Jesus lived, OR it could be evidence for the resurrection. I think that the simple answer is that it is evidence for an event that quite a few people wrote about (the resurrection), rather than some unknown, extremely rare, event that just so happened to take place in the same general place and at the same general time as the resurrection....

Hi Michael from a Canadian grandma Christian...around 1979 l bought my first book on The Shroud of Turin. It dealt with the travels of the Shroud through the Centuries. People hid it and people moved it. It's a miracle in itself it survived. The DNA debacle was from cloth of a repaired area. Later the Church of Rome allowed another test and that showed from the First Century or so. I have a few books and DVDS now and there are many RUclips videos on it. The Shroud is also an Xray and a Hologram. The "Man of the Shroud" has 24 teeth!! There are great erudite European scholars of thread, stitching, cloth and weaves, rocks, seeds, pollen and comparison to other ancient shrouds. The blood stains are plentiful on the Shroud and are blood, and it is type AB. NOW dear Michael, there is a cloth in Spain, called the Suderium (sweat cloth) of Oviedo and the blood stains are AB on it and match the stains and blood type of the Shroud. It is said St. Peter took it Spain. It's wonderful...go down the Rabbit hole!! Blessings ❤❤

That's exactly what happened, they only did carbon dating on the corners of the shroud, but the corners of the shroud had been repaired by nuns in the 1600s (the corners were damaged by improper handling over the centuries).
The nuns had a technique called invisible French weave where they could weave new linen fibres together with the old to repair cloth without creating a seam. The samples taken for carbon dating thus had a mixture of material from the first century and the 17th century.
The scientists publicized their results that appeared to show that the cloth was from the 1300s, but they were rather quiet about the fact that the error on that value was unreasonably high (when you take an average of samples from 1650 AD and samples from 33 AD you might get an average in the 1300s but with a huge statistical error). Some of those fellows went on to propel their careers as one of "the great skeptical scientists that disproved the Shroud of Turin."

Just to give a few more pivotal facts. The carbon dating test was faulty to begin with as they only took one sample to test rather than the 6 test samples from top to bottom which was apart of the carbon testing protocols. What's important about the shroud of Turin too is it's on a layer heigh of 4 microns, it contains 3D data on a single layer meaning that if it was a painting over the fabric whilst someone was wrapped in it there would be perspective distortion but given its on a single layer some scientists argued that the shroud lowered into the body as it disappeared within something of a one-millionth of a second, this is also due to the fact that it has x-ray data showing the teeth, bones and nails. It also has signs of bilirubin (chemical released under extreme pain that causes blood to stay red when it dries). Rock pigment and flora samples picked up on the shroud are only exclusive to that area of jerusalem one being a thorned bush where it's leaves essentially was like a cap of thorns. It also has I think it was AB+ blood type (which also correlates to every approved eucharistic miracles where the blood has been tested), there's also a wound between the ribs where the spear was thrust and they can confirm the angle of penetration. one last fact, over the eyes and it's imprinted on the shroud was minted coins of Pontius Pilate that were in circulation during the time period of the crucifixion. I've listened to a lot of talks on it and read the info from the original STURP investigation from the 70's.

I'm an atheist now because I've never met a religious person who didn't just want to touch children, and lord their wealth over others.

@@smolpener7430 How awful (re: the infant who was struck)! I pray daily for all children, especially those who are abused.
I don't think most Catholics are more horrible than secular people or atheists, however. Think of Catholicism like sheet music. Jesus gave us the right notes to play on the most perfect sheet music. It's up to us to tune our instruments and practice daily so that we can play the music well. Some of us are just starting out, some of us don't practice faithfully, some of us have farther to go than others.
Don't judge Christians by the worst of us (as we would try not to judge other worldviews by their worst examples). Judge us by Christ Himself... and the saints, who took their faith seriously, prayed for help, and became holy. Read stories about the saints and I hope you will be inspired! :) They found something, or more correctly Someone, Who is so full of truth, goodness, beauty, sweetness, mercy, and love, that He is worth giving up all the pleasures in the world for! Two quotes from Saint Augustine of Hippo (North Africa):
"Late have I love you, O beauty so ancient yet ever new! Late
have I loved you! Behold, you were within and I was out abroad,
searching there for you. Deformed, I plunged into the fair forms
that you had made. You were with me, but I was not with you. I
was held back far from you by things, which would not themselves
be if they were not in you. You called, you shouted, and you burst
open my deafness. You flashed, you shone in radiance, and you
drove away my blindness. You breathed forth your fragrance, and I
drew my breath and sighed for you. I tasted, and now I hunger and
thirst. You touched me, and I burned for your peace."
“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”
May God bless and guide you and your loved ones.

Fifteen years ago I attended a prayer meeting in the small RC Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle, in South Wales, UK. There were only ten people present including the Priest. At the end of the prayers a young lady in our group asked if we could see anything on the Altar? We all looked towards the Altar, and there right around the Crucifix on the Altar, appeared the face of the Shroud of Turin. It something that I will never forget. Later looking at pictures of the Shroud face I noticed a cross of light across the forehead and down the centre of the forehead and nose. And that was also exactly how the face of the Shroud had also aligned with the Crucifix on the Altar. Many old paintings of the face of Christ, show a cross behind his head which also matches the light cross on the face of the Shroud. The Shroud of Turin is one hundred percent authentic.

Faith is a modern concept...about 300 years old. Its essentially just someone saying: "just trust me bro". 😂. Basically Martin Luther and John Calvin came along and concluded faith was the foundation for Christianity, basically because they were such bad theologians they couldn't explain via the actual text, why they believe what they believe. Historically, there has always been enough evidence and reason for God, that faith was a very minor part of Christianity. It's meaning has been so corrupted over time, it's meaning has been lost. No one has done more to destroy the original meaning and wisdom found in the Bible than Martin Luther and his progeny, all protestant denominations, especially evangelicals. Luther and his ilk essentially thought: "it really doesn't matter if you can understand a word written in the Bible. Just have faith and interpret its meaning for yourself." Faith without good works is pointless. Faith without understanding and wisdom is simply dangerous. Its the blind leading the blind, but claiming that they can see.
A bad theologian says "faith" when questioned. A good one offers logic, reason, and evidence. Faith removed all wisdom from the Bible.

Michael Knowles deleted my previous comment. Essentially faith is a modern concept. Faith fills in the gaps in religion that used to be occupied by wisdom. Faith is for those who cannot truly see or simply cannot understand that there is enough reason and evidence for God without faith. Martin Luther and John Calvin, two of the worst theologians in history, decided faith was the cornerstone of Christianity and you didnt need to actually understand the Bible; you can just interpret it for yourself (incorrectly), and it could basically mean anything you wanted. He was wrong. This concept of faith has only been around about 300 years. All Protestant denominations are derived from these two dunces.

About the 1980s studies, they only did carbon dating on the corners of the shroud, but the corners of the shroud had been repaired by nuns in the 1600s (the corners were damaged by improper handling over the centuries).
The nuns had a technique called invisible French weave where they could weave new linen fibres together with the old to repair cloth in a seamless way.
Some of them went on to propel their career as one of "the great skeptical scientists that disproved the Shroud of Turin."

The shroud is amazing, but faith built on it is like building a house on sand. Faith must be for Jesus Christ and nothing else or it is idolatry.

Furthermore, it has been proven that the shroud cannot be a "fake". Either it is real or it is a masterpiece of art. It was not passed off as a "fake" or the real deal until after two centuries after its discovery in Turin. There are source documents showing that the shroud was an artwork and that at one time the artist was known, but lost to time. However, it could also have been real. Most of the "science" and claims have come from activists on both sides, so the truth was not the priority.

This is crazy. I was literally telling a coworker just last night about the shroud of turin and this “burst of energy” from within. We aren’t allowed to have our phones on us at my job, so i seriously doubt my phone was “listening”. Then i wake up today to see this story. What a coinky-dink!

As he was born, he was resurrected
A virgin birth, he emerged from his mother’s womb, without birth pangs for Blessed Virgin Mary
A resurrected life, he emerged from his burial cloth the same way
Our Catholic faith has so much depth that “where is that in the bible” is like breathing on one lung

Jesus is LORD, not Mary. She had birth pangs like anyone else. She had at least 6 other children. Joseph was Mary's husband and NEW her after Jesus's birth. Jesus never told anyone to pray to his Mother after his passing. He is alive and well at the right hand of the FATHER to listen to our prayers and make intercession for us. Our prayers should be times of thanksgiving, blessing and gratitude for what JESUS has provided for us. HE knows what you need before you ask. God has allowed me to see my wife restored from a septic shock coma with no hope in 8 hours, my son was restored in 8 days from severe burns after a refinery explosion, my mother in law was restored to health at 78 from ovarian cancer, diabetes, and congestive heart failure; I was restored from congestive heart failure with a recovery chance of 8% after 2 weeks in a induced coma. I could go on but, the point is MARY is not the one to receive praise. JESUS is the focus of everything we are and can be. HE is the ONE to calm our storms, comfort us, assure us, our GOOD SHEPARD, the BANNER OUR US, our PROVIDER, ..............BLESSED IS HIS NAME. GOD BLESS
