  • CPKC is scrapping its inventory of SD9043MACs it had on standby for the SD70ACu program. Seeing these old Union Pacific engines roll by on their last trip - metaphorically and literally down the river - was a bittersweet scene.
From FB, we learned these are getting cut up at Alton Steel in East St. Louis, IL. Of course, useable parts have been stripped, and the steel will find a new life, but the short life of these SD90s is a bummer.

Love this video! Just wish these had a future as new ACU units

Cool catch and video, Wonder if these are going onto the Wisconsin side and down or straight down into Iowa? Have a wonderful rest of your Wednesday.(Steve)

Thank you, Dave! Hope you enjoy your evening as well. These went down the Iowa side, I believe. They all ended up at Alton Steel in East Saint Louis.

I though CPKC was going to rebuild them eventually

That’s what the intent was, but these are piling up in an East St. Louis scrap yard. I think the CPKC merger brought an influx of KCS power that made these surplus.
