It looks good, I plan on getting it and trying it out. From what I’ve seen of other reviews it seems short but sweet. Hopefully with enough support and positive reception, soulslikes will change the formula to be more bloodborn/sekiro inspired as pure dark souls clones bore me. Agreed. Sekiro and Elden Ring show you can still be souls like but have more offensive action minded gameplay. Still, imagine something like the nemesis system combined with good souls combat. There are alot of souls+x combos yet to be explored.
@@mattm7798 I think the nemesis system is actually patented so no other game is currently allowed to do something similar right now. But yeah I agree there’s various combinations of games that people could do but nobody seems to come up with
Have you tried the game yet? I found it to be pretty good. There are some criticisms to make such as the short play time, lack of meaningful exploration, and low enemy variety, but I was pleased that the combat mechanics feel good. It seems like the devs genuinely tried to add their own innovations to the tried and true Sekiro combat mechanics and succeeded. The way you can freely respec talents and the variety of plague weapons gives the player more options to craft their own combat style instead of being forced to rely on deflection only.
I'm really really happy that they tweaked combat from the first demo. I was pretty hyped for this game but combat felt very off. The updated demo felt much much better.
Picked this up over the weekend and have been enjoying myself. The combat is tight, closer to Sekiro in execution than Bloodborne, with some obvious influences from Demon's Souls map design. Visuals are fine for its price point. The lack of voice is noticeable, but that's one of those areas where it's better not to have it than do it wrong. All-in-all it's one of the better attempts at a Souls-inspired action RPG and I'll certainly be finishing it this week.
You know what would be kind of sick? If they rebooted the ”Legacy of Cain” games but in a soulsborne style. Like Bloodomen and Soulreaver from WAY back
That in concept sounds like a awesome idea but unfortunately I can't name too many Souls-likes that even come close to FromSoftware quality. Nioh 2 is maybe the only one. Nobody can really make a souls-like that is that good.

I played for about an hour so far and I am enjoying the game for the most part. The combat feels more Sekiro-like to me, which means I have died a bit already. I do intend on playing the game until I get the platinum trophy.
I already feel bad for this game. It seems to be getting a lot of salt from the FromSoft community in the comment section. Can't say I'm surprised because any fan base that views the company they like is flawless will only see the worst in a game that's similar to those made by that company, but I think a lot of people are forgetting this is a little indie team and not some huge AAA game. Some of the best games I've played have been indie games, and I think this one deserves a fair shake. It's definitely going to get a buy from me.
Hm, I'm surprised at how vehement the Fromsoft purist faction in the comment section is. There are so many people bashing the game while clearing having not played it. I find all the generic "trash Bloodborne wannabe" type comments especially funny because anyone who's actually played the game will know that the combat is much more Sekiro inspired than Bloodborne. At anyrate, having gone through most of the game I might as well leave my two cents. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm actually rather pleased with the tweaks to the combat system they made. The Wounds vs Health system could have been extremely clunky and tedious, but I found it was actually engaging to balance between attacks that dealt Wounds vs Attacks that dealt Health Damage. My biggest praise has to go with the dynamic talent system which allows for meaningful adjustments to your combat style, allowing you to customize your character for either your own preference or to suit the situation. It feels like it was inspired by Sekiro's Shinobi arts, but being able to freely adjust your talent tree and the existence of mutually exclusive branching paths has great flexibility. One criticism I see sometimes leveled at Sekiro was that there was only one optimal way to play, learn to parry or die. In Thymesia, mastering the parry is a strong and effective way to play, but you have alternative options, and even options to lean into parry! You can choose to reduce your parry/deflect frames to gain stronger counter attack damage. Alternatively you can exchange your deflect for a more standard block that takes chip damage. If you don't want to mess with blocking, you can upgrade your dash to have extended range or a double dash and beat the content using evasion only. There are talents that synergize with different styles that you can combine to fit you. If you take the defense stance over the deflection, it might be a good idea to pair that with a talent that lets you regain energy when you take damage. Then you can use a Plague Weapon that turns that Energy into HP to become a powerful defensive tank. Being able to change your talents at any resting point means you can adjust your play style at any time, and even experiment from boss to boss. With a slow but powerful boss you might want to doge and hit them with a powerful Plauge Weapon. With a faster boss you might try taking a more defensive options etc etc. In Soulsgames, your stats often lock you into playstyles, and while you can reset it is still a process. For example, if your build in Elden ring is a heavy weapons dual wield build that focuses on jump attacks, you'll pretty much be stuck jump attacking your way through the whole game. There will be little to no variety in your playthrough. That being said, the game isn't perfect. The overworld enemies lack variety. They are pretty much all humanoid type enemies, and can be knocked down with the Greatsword Plauge weapon. This makes the Greatsword extremely effective at taking down all small-fry enemies without much worry of counter attack. Once I found it, I rarely used other Plague Weapons in the overworld. I'm not a big fan of exploration, so the lack of a map was annoying to me. The maps are pretty linear, which was a plus in my book. I suppose being forced to remember does fit in with the theme of the game, so I'm not going to complain too much. Overall, it is a short but highly polished game with solid mechanics. There are no micro transactions or bloated time wasting mechanics. The game progression is well crafted to fit the short play time. The mechanics are borrowed from the Souls games, but solid innovations have been made to make it a unique and fun experience. This is the kind of game we should be encouraging game devs to make. It disappoints me that a solid game is getting a bad rap by elitists and people who haven't played the game while predatory companies are making millions off of brain dead lootboxes and gacha games.

@@marekbabik2791 not fond of using the nature of the game as an indie title or its budget as an excuse, in a day and age where indie title can at times mock AAA studios' quality even incidentally. The only reasonable excuse I can see is that is the dev's first game, and even for that there's been smash hits and the game was overhyped for months and recently because of the flood of sponsored reviews with early keys. Do not be mistaken, it can be an enjoyable game. However, is not for everyone (especially among soulslike enthusiast that'll be nitpicky with it), is pretty short and hardly worth playing more than once unless you really want to get all five endings. At best is an entry point to the genre, but in quality is dire need of polish with or without comparing it, and most of the positive reactions to it have been over desperation for another soulslike to play instead of questioning the game's design. It's a game you either skip, or give it a chance while on sale.
Question for those who have bought the game, does the gameplay still feels a bit off like the demo? I really want to support this developer but the demo had this (DS2 at launch feel). Some of the things were not working as intended... Please advise!
Nope, the gameplay is fantastic. The story aspect is lacking, but the quality of gameplay and bosses rivals that of some of the best stuff that Fromsoft has to offer
You should compare this game more like sekiro than ds 2. Game atm freezes for 1 or 2 sec from time to time after you played for about an hour. A reboot would fix this issue however
I finished the game not that long ago and I believe this is a good bang for the bucks. Gameplay wise the game really slaps which is impressive considering this is their first game. As a Sekiro enjoyer, the parry feels pretty satisfying although very punishing if you miss. Difficulty wise, it's only as difficult as you make it for yourself... Meaning there are lots of option to make the game feel easier or harder. The lore is interesting but I'm not a big fan of reading through everything since there isn't any VA. Overall I think it's a good spending and I cant wait to see what comes next from that team!
As always I love the content and coverage you guys provide, but I am really ready for some new ideas from the gaming industry. Make a game like this with ranged weapons included and viable for instance.
It'd be nice to see a soulslike, or an action RPG for that matter, where ranged weapons were balanced around melee options without outshining the latter or simply were the main focus of the game (like Remnant: From the Ashes).
TBF there aren't many games like Bloodborne, so I'm thrilled to see it. FromSoft isn't going to fill the void for me, so I'm happy to have something similar.
7.8? Not a bad score at all. But I must say I'm offended team Fextra gave this under an 8 when that other souls like from spider dev team who made greed fall gets an 8.3 and it looks less... well. Good. I'm a bit skeptical on Fex now.
Use Claw attacks, the right click button. The Dagger Plague Weapon also deals a ton of Health/Greenbar damage. You can upgrade the Claw into Short Claw or Long Claw. Short Claw has a fast 3 hit combo, but doesn't have the long dash range of the Long Claw. Personally I preferred the Long Claw.
I played the demo. And it was nice. But what I hate is the parry. Sometimes the timing felt off and or time. I realized it was a bug.. but I'm still motivated to buy and play the game along with steel rising.
Wish they focused on combat some more if they where gonna make customization and builds so simple and boring I feel like it’s gonna get repetitive after a while especially for a souls like game
Sekiro is more like Sifu. Memorize exact attack patterns. They are built on you have to die multiple times to learn. This and souls is more like, assess the situation and you might live.
Wouldn't compare it to Sekiro or Bloodborne. Thymesia have it's own ideas that play in tandem. Sekiro was all about breaking posture, Bloodborne parries was all about critical hits. Enemies here have what we can call "two HP bars", it's good and force you to use multiple tools... Unless people will find way to unterly break the game
@@steve87j I disagree for both. Both those games seem like they are going to be that way but end up being far simpler. Sekiro is probably the worst game I have ever played in regards to explaining itself to the player, the game didn't click until my full second playthrough and that's pretty awful. Bothe games are not about memorizing but training patterns of response. In most cases an enemy will not demand a specific response, instead they will punish a specific response. In Sifu it's often that the enemy only hits you if you dodge in one specific wrong direction, all 3 other directions will be fine. In Sekiro you can often just spam deflect because poor timing doesn't matter as much as you think. Often jumping and dodging to the side will avoid thrusts, you just won't get a mikuri counter for doing so. Sekiro also has early bosses that are major exceptions to most of the rules it sets up and it's baffling why they are there.
This gives me Devil May Cry and Bloodborne vibes and that is certainly not a complaint since those are two of my favored games! I have to check this out!
There's also no enemy variety or VO, and the available build customization is in truth basic gameplay elements in other games but implemented as skill trees.
Looking forward to it, but like most game, I'll wait a couple of months when it has received a few patches to improve the experience and when it'll be on a slight discount.
@Michael T That sounds reasonable. You want it for free? They have to make something off their efforts and continue functioning as developers. So entitled 🙄
In the past comparing games to souls games sent my expectations into the stratosphere. But I was usually disappointed. As someone who has played through Bloodborne at least 7 or 8 times this game has a lot to live up to. I will try this at some point but honestly this game looks pretty hollow uninspired and clunky. Fromsofts games are so much more than hard bosses and stamina management.
The difficulty souls-likes have is that Fromsoft is constantly one upping themselves. Which means smaller devs inspired by their work are constantly being outpaced by the ones that created the genre. Constantly playing catch up and remixing mechanics they see in each new From game that releases. It's not hard not to be sceptical when you see new souls likes because of this. By the time we get bored of Fromsoft they release a new game that is almost always a resounding success.
It seems like it has some good depth to me, honestly. This isn't a FromSoft game, it's just just inspired by it. And to be fair, we can't say everything about its depth until we try it aside from watching a full playthrough, I guess. I'm happy to give it a try. Not really fair to hold an indie title selling a game for half the price to a company with much more experience. If I went in to every soul's late game assuming that it had to meet from soft standards, I'd probably be disappointed in everything. I have to take it as its own individual thing and leave it at that. I'm not saying you can't have a valid opinion, though. But still.
To me, nioh has the best combat. I'd love for a new game to be more heavily inspired by Nioh's combat rather than souls or bloodborne, even though I love those games too.
I have good news for you...Wo Long is on its way. Made by Team Ninja as well, it's basically Nioh's combat system being further evolved and the setting is now China's 3 Kingdoms.
@@sensoeirensen i did spend over 1000hours in just Bloodborne and DS3 ...and now Elden Ring is there ... i would say Bloodborne with combination of some trick attacks in Thymesia or some combos in Nioh would be awesome ...
This looks like a great game. But calling it a souls like I feel in my opinion takes away from it. It does have similarities to sekiro but I do feel the game does stand on its own identity. I want to give this game a chance with the mindset of it being it’s own identity. What makes a souls like anyway?
I’d consider a soulslike to be a game with: losing resources on death and having to go back and pick it up, enemies that require cautious focus, punishing bosses that require (typically) stamina management and learning their move set to beat, healing/magic flasks that refill at checkpoints, enemies resetting after resting at checkpoints, currency being combined with experience needed to level up, an upgrade system, (typically) an open exploration path in the world that lets you experience areas in a nonlinear fashion to what the story technically wants, multiple endings based on actions you took during the playthrough, and probably a combination of the gui and control layout as I don’t know of any other genre that has a similar control scheme to souls games. At least an ideal soulslike would be like this in my opinion, obviously a smaller team working with a lot less budget would have to cut corners somewhere unfortunately Other people would likely add the gloomy atmosphere, a story that is not explicitly stated and usually needs to piece it together by finding environmental clues and item/spell descriptions, perhaps a lack of focus on ranged weapons and spells even if they’re present in the game, invasions, and melee combat focused on parrying and critical hits. Though personally I feel like those are just theme and fromsoft’s particular way of storytelling and not something I think a good soulslike would actually need but other companies tend to copy anyway.
Does seem like an obvious souls-like though. Bonfiresystem, respawning enemies, combat similarities, souls leveling system. Sure some own themes and systems. But still definitely a soulslike nontheless
So this bloodborne-like actually has decent bosses and gameplay? Well it’s not like I have anything else to play and I pretty much play all souls likes
@@darkdaysahead01 I meant that it's a bloodborne-like. Of course bloodborne itself is amazing and has great bosses and gameplay. It's possibly my favorite game of all time in fact
@@tomasdelcampo2 the last fight to me was a letdown in the nature of it (which won't spoil for everyone else). Odun's first encounter and Urd were the only truly enjoyable ones for me. Honorable mentions to Varg and Hanged Queen that were just decent enough but didn't feel enfranchised with them. The rest did not enjoy at all, especially GotF, SotA and the final boss.
TBF they are taking inspiration from Bloodborne which is a VERY dreary game to start with. Basically any game set in Victorian London (give or take) is always going to be dreary. I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't.
Looks really good. But I've just bought nioh 2 so pretty sure I'll be spending a shitload of time on that as I hear its really long. This will be on the list for after it though 👌
Trust me, you will enjoy Nioh 2 more than this gane atm, as this game isnt polished yet like some game freezes. Give Thymesia some time to hopefully fix it and then you might enjoy it better
They shoulda did voice acting is my biggest complain... Boss fights where they "talk" during combat with subtitles being east to miss is annoying and lame af IMO.
"Cat TOS trophy" - Anyway: Demo was super rough and had poor performance on a high end PC, so will be watching post-release before buying and watching many many people play/review.

A reboot would fix this issue however
@@conget was not comparing it gameplaywise, in the demo some things were not working as intended just like ds2 when it came out.
Looks good, expected you'd give it more
How are boss runbacks?
15 bucks at the xbox store at the moment, gonna try it out, thanks for the review
will it release on console?
Stop comparing this to bloodborne it's not Bloodborne. This game is awesome it deserves to be called its own name
its literally copying the souls formula .. bonfires, common are, boss runs, losing ur money on death
yes its a unique game the foundation is souls
Surprised to see gameranx covered this also. Does overboard have a good pr department?
Thymesia is not a soul's borne game. It's a soul's like.
How do you rate price point when we don't have it yet???
As always I love the content and coverage you guys provide, but I am really ready for some new ideas from the gaming industry. Make a game like this with ranged weapons included and viable for instance.
Well there is remnants from the ashes , which a souls like ( and a rogue like ) game but with guns
@@lynackhilou4865 ..With all due respect Remnant is just a mob shooter, and 1 of many in that genre.
It'd be nice to see a soulslike, or an action RPG for that matter, where ranged weapons were balanced around melee options without outshining the latter or simply were the main focus of the game (like Remnant: From the Ashes).
@@lynackhilou4865 also evil west is coming out, which is remnant in all but name
It only got less than an 8 because of the price compared to gameplay content
I have a problem with the green bar, how do I get rid of it quickly
Use Claw attacks, the right click button. The Dagger Plague Weapon also deals a ton of Health/Greenbar damage. You can upgrade the Claw into Short Claw or Long Claw. Short Claw has a fast 3 hit combo, but doesn't have the long dash range of the Long Claw. Personally I preferred the Long Claw.
@@Kryto_Gaming thanks i will try it
i just want from soft to release bloodbourne on pc
Will it release on ps4? I read that it might not be available on ps4
Looks pretty fun but I'll be waiting for a steam sale
Thymesia feels like a blend of bloodborne sekiro and a little bit of God of war
Sekiro x BloodBorne = Mind Blown
Looking forward to this. Seems like a great fit for Steam Deck.
I played the demo. And it was nice. But what I hate is the parry. Sometimes the timing felt off and or time. I realized it was a bug.. but I'm still motivated to buy and play the game along with steel rising.
I would have liked to see armor in the game, but I know that is a big production cost for a game of this scale.
the beacon found font is literally the same font as GREAT ENEMY FELLED
Wish they focused on combat some more if they where gonna make customization and builds so simple and boring I feel like it’s gonna get repetitive after a while especially for a souls like game
If they haven't already, they need a new demo out to show how it plays now, as the last one was atrocious
Stand at mid-distance and spam Charged / Dash move, then back out = win Game?
So, a little more Sekiro than Bloodborne???
Sekiro is more like Sifu. Memorize exact attack patterns. They are built on you have to die multiple times to learn. This and souls is more like, assess the situation and you might live.
Wouldn't compare it to Sekiro or Bloodborne. Thymesia have it's own ideas that play in tandem. Sekiro was all about breaking posture, Bloodborne parries was all about critical hits. Enemies here have what we can call "two HP bars", it's good and force you to use multiple tools...
Unless people will find way to unterly break the game
It's definitely more like Sekiro gameplay wise and with the two health bars being similar to the posture bar.
Humans and their stupid need to compare something
I have to check this out!
looks kinda rough tbh: no multiplayer, no customization, no summons... sadly all my fav things from souls like are missing.
There's also no enemy variety or VO, and the available build customization is in truth basic gameplay elements in other games but implemented as skill trees.
Looking forward to it, but like most game, I'll wait a couple of months when it has received a few patches to improve the experience and when it'll be on a slight discount.
It’s only 29.99

@Michael T You want all games to be free or something? $30 isn't much. Edit: It's not even $30 right now, it's normally $25 with 10% off so it's $22.
@Michael T That sounds reasonable. You want it for free? They have to make something off their efforts and continue functioning as developers. So entitled 🙄
Best review I’ve seen
That's not going to save this game lol.
@@atlantic_love This game is a Indie title which has more potential than your comment
@@reddevilkev Is that how you defend your comments, by attacking others? You know nothing about potential.
@@atlantic_love your previous comment is pointless so I answered at your level

When is this game coming to ps4?
AFAIK, it's not. It was originally a PC only release, but due to pressure they extended to consoles, but PS5/Series X only.
But still.
I'll probably get this day one... because I have a problem... with impulse buying soulslike games... Someone please send help...
I love that indie studios are creating such great games! I earnestly believe that an indie studio can someday create a soulsborne to rival bloodborne
Welp, time to add this to the wishlist
After watching your review I am buying for my switch,at £19.99 I feel this is too good to miss.
Max level only 25 and only 3 stats to upgrade. I think this one's a pass for me.
To me, nioh has the best combat. I'd love for a new game to be more heavily inspired by Nioh's combat rather than souls or bloodborne, even though I love those games too.
Agree both Niohs are masterpieces. Over 600hrs combined.
I would put sekiro up there with nioh, although both game ips are strong where the other falls short.
I have good news for you...Wo Long is on its way. Made by Team Ninja as well, it's basically Nioh's combat system being further evolved and the setting is now China's 3 Kingdoms.
@@Rooster_Ric Sekiro was too repetitive
@@sensoeirensen i did spend over 1000hours in just Bloodborne and DS3 ...and now Elden Ring is there ... i would say Bloodborne with combination of some trick attacks in Thymesia or some combos in Nioh would be awesome ...
I saw the trailer got bloodborne vibes was getting hyped but went back down when I saw it’s just on the new platform…
At least an ideal soulslike would be like this in my opinion, obviously a smaller team working with a lot less budget would have to cut corners somewhere unfortunately
Other people would likely add the gloomy atmosphere, a story that is not explicitly stated and usually needs to piece it together by finding environmental clues and item/spell descriptions, perhaps a lack of focus on ranged weapons and spells even if they’re present in the game, invasions, and melee combat focused on parrying and critical hits.
The no price point really bothers me it's 2 days from release and they didn't give reviewers a price point
It’s 29.99 on Amazon
Are they going house of the dead and using the major arcana as boss names? Nice.
So this bloodborne-like actually has decent bosses and gameplay? Well it’s not like I have anything else to play and I pretty much play all souls likes
Are you implying Bloodborne didn’t?
@@darkdaysahead01 I meant that it's a bloodborne-like. Of course bloodborne itself is amazing and has great bosses and gameplay. It's possibly my favorite game of all time in fact
Decent gameplay, but the bossfights are meh. There's 8 and the first boss is one of the two only highlights among them.
@@diegosaez4885 the last 3 bosses were amazing and yea the first is awesome too
@@tomasdelcampo2 the last fight to me was a letdown in the nature of it (which won't spoil for everyone else). Odun's first encounter and Urd were the only truly enjoyable ones for me. Honorable mentions to Varg and Hanged Queen that were just decent enough but didn't feel enfranchised with them. The rest did not enjoy at all, especially GotF, SotA and the final boss.
IDK it looks generic to me. Nothing about it catches my interest
Someone should make a colourful souls like game.they always make this clones dreary
TBF they are taking inspiration from Bloodborne which is a VERY dreary game to start with. Basically any game set in Victorian London (give or take) is always going to be dreary. I don't think I've ever seen one that wasn't.

I feel like ,like souls is a term for people who don’t really play games that much or I would say only play one style of game

More like Souls Clone instead of Souls Like. There should be a difference in what we calls these.
I don't see the beacons or bonfires as a from software invention, it's like castlevania checkpoints

I heard thisd game was janky based on the demo last year... is all of that gone now, please?
They shoulda did voice acting is my biggest complain... Boss fights where they "talk" during combat with subtitles being east to miss is annoying and lame af IMO.
