    What I have noticed in my use so far has been that muscle contraction of the diaphragm has an effect of ~10% increase. This concerned me a little as to the accuracy of the results. Though after intentionally relaxing the diaphragm and keeping it relaxed, as well as keeping the breath steady, I found the sensation changes in my head to be the greatest affectors. So long story short, seems to work well if you don't jack up your natural body state.

    Now, that I think about the implications: Is there a way to connect the device not only to your heart rate for HRV, but also to your breathing rhythm? I mean, this could open up the possibility to track your oxygen level in relation to your in/out breaths. Reminds me of a person who noticed that the EEG signal during neurofeedback training went away from target levels with every in-breath . . .

  • @theanupamkumarYT

    Not sure how valuable just 2 channels on the forehead would be. The hardware is a pretty topic, but what's not discussed much here is the underlying neuroscience itself.
    A lot of neurotech is hitting the market wherein the exact value of the signal is frankly spurious.

    Thank you for the interview! Super interesting! I just ordered a Mendi and look forward to putting it (and myself!) through its paces!
    It's not entirely clear whether Rickard Eckloff understood your question about parsing out the Hemoglobin oxygenation and the increased blood flow data from the sensors. It seems to me that he might've been talking about the total increase in oxygen supply that could come from a combination of increased blood flow and increased oxygenation. Here's what I took away from the interview:
    From what he described, the Mendi has three sensors, one that gets a measure of the blood flow in the forehead muscle and two others that get a single number each from the left and right frontal lobes. The forehead blood flow, as I understood it, is used to remove extraneous noise from the other two sensors so it can't be used to extract additional data about the frontal lobes' blood flow. That means we only have two measurements available for the two frontal lobes. Are these data used to then determine the change in blood flow and the change in oxygenation of the hemoglobin? It seems to me that to do this, a model of the frontal lobe blood flow will have to be used which will only be an approximate model for the entire population. In other words, these are not direct measurements of oxygenation and blood flow but extracted values based on approximate equations. If this is true, (this is just my current hypothesis) what does it mean for the development of other games for the Mendi? I suspect it means that it'll be tough to accomplish!

  • @christofinb
    @christofinb 2 года назад +6

    Thanks for this interview Cody, I like the Mendi but it seems to only serve as an observation device, as the user is not sure whether the results/feedback that is received is due to increasing oxygen levels through breathing or if it’s through concentration/focus, not sure how the user is supposed to utilise it to support brain health if the feedback could be due to other factors other than concentration/focus.

    • @davidtenser2660
      @davidtenser2660 2 года назад +5

      Mendi is not just an observation device - or rather, the hardware is certainly just an instrument to passively observe what's happening in your PFC, but the app and training experience works to actively encourage you to increase your neural activity. The trick is to do a Mendi session while being relaxed and breathing normally. That way you aren't introducing noise and artifacts, and instead can be sure you're looking at an increased blood flow as a result of neural activity, rather than something like heavy breathing.

    • @christofinb
      @christofinb 2 года назад +2

      @@davidtenser2660 Thanks for your reply David was having difficult to tell the difference during a session between the artefacts and the feedback given through concentration even when just breathing normally.
      I also get really good results very late at night and in the small hours one would think that the opposite would happen, I am not sure how to make use of being aware of this.

    • @davidtenser2660
      @davidtenser2660 2 года назад +2

      @@christofinb Generally speaking, the more you work to eliminate artifacts in your environments, the more sure you can be that the neurofeedback you're getting from Mendi is indeed in direct correlation with your neural activity in the PFC. Regarding the breathing artifacts, this is highly individual, but luckily there is a way to filter out this more or less completely from the signal through software. We're currently working on it and expect a future release to eliminate this artifact for most people. For now though, a normal, relaxed and not too heavy/deep breath is the best way to go.
      In terms of when you get the best results, this depends on many parameters and is highly individual. Remember, Mendi establishes a baseline during the calibration and then you are rewarded for an increase in neural activity above that baseline. Maybe you are more relaxed in the evening? I personally find that when I'm mentally exhausted after a hard day of work, I tend to score worse, but again, it's very individual. The most important aspect of brain training is to form a habit you stick to, because consistency is key. It's more important that you do the training than the scores you achieve per session. Hope this helps!

    • @christofinb
      @christofinb 2 года назад +3

      @@davidtenser2660 thanks I appreciate your response,
      I will work on it can become a little if one doesn’t really know how to eliminate the breathing artefact into the feedback.
      The main thing is that if I can get good results in my brain health, I am not getting any younger and weary of cognitive decline, usually I get a good positive response if I do a good session that lasts about 15 minutes below that it doesn’t seem as though it helps, perhaps for us elders it takes longer to learn the feedback to feel the benefit enhancement from increased focus.

    • @davidtenser2660
      @davidtenser2660 2 года назад +2

      @@christofinb Indeed, none of us is getting any younger, and, although no known technology can reverse our cognitive abilities back to where they were when we were younger, neurofeedback combined with a healthy lifestyle can defintely help us *maintain* our current cognitive abilities. Forming a lasting habit around Mendi training is one great thing you can do to increase your overall wellbeing. I hope that makes sense. Best of luck with your training!

Why would you want to compare with people that meditate. or have a more still mind.. or people that don't.. what does that buy you??

      fNIR can get, only to cortical areas. Subcortical areas and diencephalic structures of the limbic system cannot be reached, because the IR light cannot penetrate deep enough. The orbitofrontal cortex of the limbic system might just be in the reach of the senors of Mendi as the only part of the limbic system

    I love Mendi! It has made a tremendous difference in my focus. But I can't recommend it. Why? The software is a bit buggy and the company's customer service team leaves a user with the impression that they couldn't care less. It's a travesty; if you reach out, they quickly give you a ticket number and then ignore you. I do hope they get a much deserved kick in the pants. Trust Pilot reviews of Mendi's customer service concur--it sucks! This is not what buyers want to hear when considering their investment in a crowded field. I hope that the company's CEO/CoFounder realizes that this terrific product can make the difference they envision. Please take the reins in sharpening the focus and accountability of their customer service team. I'd love to go back to spreading the word with positive reviews and through word of mouth.
