Also knows as Negronne or Petite Negi
    Growing Zones 7-10
Growing Zones 5-6 marginal (provide winter protection)
    High Sugar, incredibly sweet fig
Dwarf fig tree is ideal in containers
Adapted to a wide range of climates
1 breba crop early and a late main crop
Watch as Ed Laivo, "Mr. Fruit" snacks on a big plateful of the Violette de Bordeaux fig.
'Well, we’re lucky today. Here it is, the Violette de Bordeaux, probably the most fantastic fig that you can eat. Ripe right now in late September, this is the main crop. The tree is loaded with fruit and as you can see, I have just a pile to enjoy. The Violette de Bordeaux also produces a good early breba crop.
This special variety has been around a long time and it traces back to the 1600’s in France. It’s a natural dwarf tree, ideal in containers, widely adapted and great for Coastal conditions or mild climates.
The main crop requires a full day’s worth of sun. The Violette de Bordeaux also does well in colder climates up to Zone 5. But if you get hard freezes in Zone 5, you’ll definitely want to protect it.
Because it doesn’t get as big, it actually does really well in containers. If you live in a colder climate, bring it in to protect it during winter, put it out in summertime and enjoy it then.
All right, let’s see if this puppy really is the finest fig that you can eat. Wow, lot of sugar in this, almost has a candy like flavor to it but it’s very complex with a somewhat strawberry like flavor and texture. All I can do is try another one. Look at that beautiful red. Mmm, that one is even sweeter.
At this time of the year, you want to be careful to pick only the softest fruit. I couldn’t help myself, I had to take as much as I possibly could! This is a real treat.
Use figs on cheese plates, salads, in cakes, make fig bars or enjoy fresh."
