I just moved to Florida and starting to grow fruit n vegetables My first fig tree is vdb n I also have a beers black I bought at Lowes.I up potted them in large containers n they are growing like crazy.I have always loved figs n can't wait to harvest my first ones.I also have citrus blueberry's pineapple witch I grew from a store pineapple n it's starting to flower and barbatos Cherry's,bananas n so much more. I came from Ohio n it was hard getting use to a new growing season but I think I have it under control now, Things are all growing fantastic.
My mystery fig tree has leaves like your in-ground tree...5 long fingers with 2 curved spurs on the back....plus spade leaves usually on separate branches. My biggest one of the bunch with 7 branches that grew to over 6 feet looks the most like your in-ground one. I rooted one small sucker and it has spade leaves. I have it indoors in a small pot. I`m gonna top it to create a bush. The other 3 in the 4-pack are smaller and mostly spade leaves with some smaller sucker branches with long fingered leaves. Very vertical growth and tight leaf nodes on most just like yours that were loaded with figs except mine have only leaves. One stayed very small but it was in a bad spot and had to be moved so it`s the runt and only 14 inches with 2 side by side branches. They were a "Celeste 4-pack." The closest match I could see from the other 4-pack offers they had was Beer`s Black which after a LOT of research I learned is synonymous with VDB. I have them all in the ground in Louisiana. The leaf stems have a pinkish tint. They also have Ischia Black too. One baby fig started to form and the tip was reddish but it dropped off or a Cardinal bit it off which has been an issue here. I`ve surrounded the 6 fig trees (so far) with 5 Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry trees to keep the Cardinals busy next year. The figs were tissue cultured and tiny little freakish mini toothpick bushes that looked like mulberry seedlings with the odd leaves.
You all probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Heath Gustavo thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I just bought one after having killed three other varieties! Or my climate has. SW Florida. I love fresh figs so I thought I would try once more. I just found your channel and I appreciate the fact that you are just informing us, not trying to entertain. No music in background etc. I just want personal experience and information. Thanks.
I've recently bought a smaller Chicago Hardy, and another one called Italian Red that was originally brought over from Italy and stayed within their family. Watching videos to learn. I live in grow area 6a. So I will transplant them into a larger pot and bring them into a sheltered area during the winter.
I still have it. It's my favorite. I keep the breba crop on it, but its just a bonus. Not much comes from it. The main season figs have better productivity. I keep mine in a half wine barrel. Otherwise it would pop up everywhere around my house. My city has a ton of random fig trees that spread themselves by rizome.
It’s said that fig tree should have roots restricted, eg like grow in pot to produce more figs. Put on ground they will focus more on vegetation grow instead of fruit production. Maybe that why the ones on the ground grow bigger but less fruits.
Good news for me because I got 5 or 6 of these guys this year. One went in the ground a little late so I'll have to find your video about protecting them through the winter but I'm looking forward to it :)
I’ve grown VDB commercially since late 80s. and 30 other varieties in many regions of the country. VDB It’s not a good one for cool summer regions and often won’t ripen in regions with short or cool summers. Glad it works there. Sounds like a good one for your region and other long sumner areas with heat units over 3500-3700
Cool i just rooted my de Bordeaux two weeks ago n the leaves r coming out already so i hope i can get to taste.some.figs this fall or next spring for sure.
If you have the figs in pots, i guess the soil in the pots is going to wear out after a while. How often do you repot? Do you have a strategy for repotting?
Hey Ross, great looking fig tree. I don’t have VdB but I do have RdB and for the first time I tasted it just couple of days ago. It had super taste and I loved it. How much of a difference is between this two varieties? Thanks
Ross!! Hey.. just ordered my 1st fig trees ever and wanted to get them from YOU because of your awesome content!! Your Nero 600m & a Ronde de Bordeaux off FigBid!!! Question.. I thought the Nero 600m WAS a Violetta de Bordeaux, but I guess it’s just super similar?? Other presenters videos have said it’s almost identical, produces earlier & later as well even after frost.. and is more cold hardy. I’m still super stoked, but would love to hear your opinion on the differences. I live in Tulsa, Ok 7A. Excited that the RdB is early too & I think produces later than VdB as well?? Any of your opinions on these purchases would be SO appreciated.. also, our Oklahoma weather suuuuucks. It’s super hot & humid, then goes to super cold. Lots of back & forth, August rains.. muggy, sweaty, cold & slushy. Gonna put them on the South side of my house.. and REALLY want to prune them to look like regular neighborhood trees. Advice on if these two options can even do that? Not a lot of videos on older trees. I saw a Desert King pruning video of a guy out of country, it’s raised up a few feet, splits in 3 branches & each branch has 3 more branches coming from it.. you familiar? I love that the trees I’m getting from you look like saplings & not grown from cuttings to achieve that traditional tree look. How long do I have to keep them potted before planting in-ground? What should my 3rd 4th & 5th fig trees be? I’m thinking Black Celeste, Campanaire & Azores Black.. but maybe I should go with something to broaden the variety like an Olympian but I heard you dissing them in another video about maybe their lack of production.. Aside from persimmons.. what other outdoor edibles would you suggest? Thanks for the wisdom, there’s not a lot of info out there for us Okies besides to just get a Brown Turkey fig.. but I know we can do better!! Oklahoma needs our own video from the Fig Boss himself.. 🙏🏼 Thanks again, keep up the good work!! 😝
I just had my first VdB today. I was going to toss it because I have not had any luck compared to the other 30 varieties I have. The tree is under a year old. Maybe it's me, but the texture was like a juicy stone fruit (nectarine/peach) - not taste. It's a keeper.
Hi Ross, I propagated figs cuttings in 4” pot in September and they are well rooted with 2 young branches. Should I repot them to 1 gallon containers now or wait till spring. BTW I live in Southern California. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Hi Ross Just purchased couple fig trees and they are about 20” long and they are in a very small pots when is best time for me to put them in a bigger pots I’m from Connecticut. Thanks you For all your articles
I'm venturing into the world of figs with a lot of thanks to you for many videos on them :) it's funny because my yard looks a lot like yours with different cultivars and clones EVERYWHERE 😅 except mine are san pedro cactus 🌵 haha wanna trade something brother? Haha you can grow one and bring it inside when Temps get below about 20 . These cactus can take some serious cold . But yeah I got a VDB and 2 little miss figgy which are what I understand to be even smaller dwarf versions of VDB
Hey Ross. I’ve been watching your channel now for many months this year. I bought my first Chicago Hardy figs this spring. I must admit, they’re strange. They grew to almost six feet in 15 gallon containers in less then 3 months without branching. I pinched the tops two weeks ago and now I’m getting branches. I’ve got fruits all over them but given the timeframe I doubt they’ll ripen in time. I live in NY. My question, should I cut the main stem just above the highest scaffold? FYI, lignification has started and is up about one third of the way. If I should cut, when would be the best time? As of this weekend, I think I’ve decided to stop my fertilizing routine and I’ve cut back the watering as per your advice. It’s just curious to me how mine are so very tall and straight and yours seem to be much lower and forked.
I'm going to try and dry a few on the tree. Thanks for the tip. You think air laying will work after the fruits are done? I'm in So Cal so nice weather for a few more months
Ross could you possible put a fig tree to a test. Such as making a wooden narrow box and literally bury it with soil and see what happens next spring. The old Italian way lol 😂

Hi, I have my first fig tree the Violette de Bordeaux with 10 fruit on it already. How would I protect the fruit from birds or pest?
Hi, I am growing them in a container. Do I need to make it a tree or a two branch bush will be ok?
I just bought this one on Southern California. Brand new to figs. So glad I found your channel.
Do you still have it and do you like it? Also do you keep the breba crops on it?

My favorite fig. grows great in Sydney, Australia
