The JOURNEY of an ARTIST - how desire and momentum can change over time

- It's okay to have ups and downs as an artist - like anything in life it is to be expected. Embrace these cycles of being motivated, loosing it then finding it again. This can be especially true at the start of your art career. Momentum shifts and your desires change but your work will always remain the constant.
My very basic graph plots the changes in desire, momentum and the quality of work over time.
I gathered information from other artists who shared a similar story so this is certainly typical of my own experience but of course may not be typical of yours.
But you can certainly expect changes from time to time.

Thank you so much Joseph - really appreciate your feedback and thoughts and find your concept fascinating too - will go check it out. Have a great day and thanks again - great to hear from you!
@@SwarezArt Thank you
Fantastic video as always. You are better than the majority of people out there hosting seminars.
Oh Lordy - I don't see how but thank you very much for that vote of confidence!
Please, write a book with all this information!!!
Very important!!!
Thank you!
Hundred times yes to this!!!
If I ever get time I will - but I think I may need some more years under me first!
You just inspired me to work harder and not to worry too much when l find myself lost! Thank you!!
So glad it helped a little Daniela - thank you for sharing that with us.
Thank you.
My pleasure Liz
Love your sessions. Your very good at this. Thank you for sharing personal information about the art world as you see it. You have answered a lot of questions I have and given me confidence to keep at it, not to mention new ideas. Brilliant guys, thank you.
Wowsers! What a lovely comment Antoinette - thank you so much for that :)
Spot on. Any artist who doesn't have their's looking like that, just hasn't gone the full gambit yet.
Thanks Matthew!
very good, you're the first one I know that explains this interesting topic like that, I enjoyed it a lot it was a great insight and thanks for sharing your experience.
Well that's very kind of you to say so Luis - thank you for stopping by.
Congratulations on 10k soon you’ll hit a 100k in no time.
Oh lordy - i can't even imagine that? Thank you so much too!
Hi🌈 what you are talking about graph wise, every creative person experiences. Writer's block is common, song writers also. I really enjoy your videos and your down to earth explaining.👌
Thank you Sophie - that's really kind of you!
That was my experience as a professional photographer! Up up up for 8 years, then leveled off with cancer, then plummeted with relationship problems, now im at the lowest ever but with signs of a big upswing coming. I am reinventing myself and exploring other mediums.
Kyle Bultman I’m a tattoo artist. 1st 7 to 9 years up up up just like you then relationship problems with baby. At the end of that time I got really depressed, partied a little too much, got into even worse relationships. Then took a break for about a year and a half jumped back in with an accelerated up then another baby and relationship problems this time I’m exercising instead of partying and gettingwith fast women.
One thing I noticed is how important it is to have a positive state of mind when being an artist. The biggest enemy to my work is a dis functional relationship or a bad state of mind. But it’s life and you gotta keep going no matter what.
I heard a quote the other day and it goes “the hardships in life are the same as the blessing.” Think It’s Tyler Perry. But he’s right the hard stuff in life gives you the best lessons.
Hope things get better.
Express through your art. Nothing more important you can be doing as human being.
BROVO to you Kyle!!! More power to you!
Progress, not regress.
My best to you, I know you'll do very well.😊👍
@@hectorgarza5205 YOU👈 ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR LIFE, -YOUR CHOICES, THE PEOPLE YOU HANGOUT WITH, WHO YOU ....SLEEP WITH....👉 -YOU choose. And IF you choose badly,... you're man enough to take responsibility for it, like a real grown up, and not blame others for YOUR juvenile decisions.
Sounds like I'm coming down on you pretty hard. Guess I am...
I'm ready for your retaliation... But, I'm hoping I can save you A LOT of unnecessary pain and anguish,... Until you stop blaming others for what is YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES, YOUR DECISIONS,... -you're always going to be playing the little boy to "fast women," and that's the best you're ever going to get, because THAT'S the best you deserve. A woman of true quality, will see your game a mile off.
-As you said, you're starting to workout, and start more self-respecting behaviors... I truly hope you continue on this path, and have a life of continued self care and self respect. You will go far with this, as you lead by example. And others will come to respect you to a higher level as well.
My best to your future success, and Love, with your family and your art career. ✌️♥️
Oh yes Hector! I love what you just said - thank you fr giving me a much needed boost! kudos. Thank you - Ed
I am so glad to hear that Kyle and I completely resonate with your ups and downs. Thank you so much for sharing that with us all - I really appreciate it.
Your line graph 😁👍. Thank you for this video and especially for you notice about uncomfortable zones. It is very important things - so thank you for this graph. 🤗
Thank you - that's very kind of you!
You can,t break the waves but you can learn to surf ❤️🎨
I am now printing that for my wall ! Thanks Patrick!
@@SwarezArt 👏😁❤️
Great video as always! Hope to win that painting!
Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Very encouraging and inspired to keep going. I used to feel flat if I wasn't selling my work but now I don't even worry about that and there is no pressure on myself at all. I love getting out every week painting for my channel and the blessing is my work is getting there slowly. U have been a inspiration to me Mate even though our styles arr a world apart. I'm a landscape painter here in Australia. Happy Painting Mate and Thanks 🎨😊
Well thank you very much indeed for that! I am glad that you have taken something from the channel. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. Happy creating and keep being awesome! Best. Ed
@@SwarezArt Thx Ed 😊🎨
👍👍👍
Congrats on the 10k subs! That was fast!!! Thanks for the info too...nice to see so many people are getting inspired and motivated by you too, that's so cool! Next week is gonna be great by the way...colourful metallics aaaaand a giveaway!!! OMG!!!

We do our best Barbs!
Probably my favorite video of you...Thank You for a flash of reality!👍😎
My pleasure Joseph - thanks for the comment!
I love the visual approach-well done on the graph!
Kim Ray thank you very much Kim.
It was very refreshing, wasn't it?
You're describing it exactly right. Lost my mojo and currently looking for inspiration and experimenting outside my comfort zone. Your video's really help, so thank you so much! Your an artistic lifesaver😁
Love the video. You talked about the motivations as an artist. People do not just lose motivation because there is no sales. There are many other things could go wrong such as family, health or other incidents. I faced a criminal offense that jeopardised my financial situation and plan as a full time content creator. Someone came to my property and smashed everything away, almost killing a tenant... And she got away... Ruining everything I have planned. I understand now why there are people who lost their homes and health due to a criminal offense.
So sorry to hear that - Indeed yes - many things contribute to the creative dips. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Very innovative way of saying it visually, it will stick more. Thanks for the graph!
Thank you Ruksana
I'm so glad I found you some months back, your approach here on YT is so refreshing! I'm still an "infant" on this journey; today as a matter of fact is my "art-versary," as I call it, of two years since I made the decision to take this road. It's been an absolute roller coaster ride, but with the generosity of people like yourself, who so kindly share their knowledge an experiences is hopeful. The way you bring information to us is enjoyable and to the point and most certainly practical. I look forward to the future as I have no intention of stopping, I just regret not having done it earlier in life.
Congratulations on your milestone, and continued success!
Happy " art-versary"!! ;-) Hope you've chosen a good cake!
Wowsers! Thank you so much for that. I am very happy to hear that you are progressing on your journey and that you have some of our content useful. That is very reassuring that we are doing a little good for people who choose to listen. Wishing you well for the next two years! Keep us posted :)
@@Kitzunia Thanks! I had a delish gourmet bread pudding (puertorrican style) 😄
I can identify with this. Right now, I'm at the far left of that graph timeline and I can definitely see how this makes total sense, so thanks for the heads up on what might be to come!!! I find that some peaks and troughs happen over a short period of time too, like over a period a week or so.
With your graph, I'm getting a feeling that today you are to the Art World what Dave Gorman is to the World of Comedy. 🤪
Oh Simon - I LOVE Dave Gorman! That has got to be one of the greatest things anyone has ever said to me! No, really I mean it. I am at a loss for words a bit now (yes, it actually happens from time to time). Thank you so much my friend. Glad you enjoyed the vid too!
Hello Swarez, Thanks so much for the great information as usual, it's truly very helpful for persons like me who are just starting the journey of art. I must also say that I enjoy watching your videos because they are clean. It's disgusting to be looking at a video and the host is obscene, just terrible. Thanks again😀
Thanks Josieann - we do our best!
This is so profound and spot on with where I'm at at the moment. I'm at the flat lining stage! My desire is almost dead... until that is I saw one on your RUclips videos a few days back. Mate you don't don't how much you are helping me with my motivation. Thank you so much for sharing your life experiences! Truly grateful!!
Wow! Thank you so much - I had no idea? Tough times for sure and we all experience them. Thanks for sharing!
Totally agree with the mix it up routine. As social animals we require interactions with people, nature, different stimuli, health fitness... I do notice the HUGE isolating periods with me... and didn't realize for a ling time I have a limit...I fojnd it and I feel better with it. Look forward to see in more of these helpful content posts, and thanks. Love your work 👍👍🎶💜
Yup! Spot on! Quit my design profession many years ago, was ecstatic, then in that deep hole, 😂 I felt your graph! Now I’m more on the right side of your graph. Yes! Those bubbles: started painting live at Formula 1 🏎 and it’s a whole new push...
Sounds amazing Anita! And thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@SwarezArt You bring good stuff. It confirms a lot of what I do/think. Glad to hear!
This is quite brilliant. I've been struggling in that mid zone for a bit and finally feel like I'm finally getting close to things starting to really ramp up. Thanks for these videos, even though they might be out of your comfort zone you're quite good at it.
Haha! That's very kind of you! Thank you
Wow I just found your page today, and I’m so happy I did! I’m currently at the low dip, but I’m looking forward to things being better again! Thanks for this video 🙌🏾
Thank you very much!
Spot on graph model! Thank you!
My pleasure!
Thanks for this great lesson,,... You really are an excellent teacher, IN SPITE of 😀 how you're uncomfortable in front of the camera. (Could have fooled me). I think you do really very well!!! 😃👍👏
Thank you for this graph timeline talk. Nobody has really explained this before, and I've wondered about it for sometime now. - I did have an art teacher tell our class once, that the average career for an artist was about 10 years.... Which got me very depressed when he said that, because I knew it usually takes a long time before you "hit your stride."
Anyway, thank you 😊 for this encouraging lesson. 👍
Thank you very much Robin - that's extremely kind of you! I don't think any art career has a lifespan - it's up to us as the creators to decide if it's something we want to do or not. Appreciate your thoughts as always! Best. Ed
I love this diagram it makes me feel like I'm not the only one... I did not realize that this was common a for some artist if I was to plot a graph it would look just like this. Thanks Ed!!!
Thank you so much TJ - I am relieved it's made some sense as I wasn't too sure how people would react to something art related being plotted on a graph!!! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts - thank you
I discovered yesterday that you achieved your goal of 10,000 subs, and I'm both pleased and amazed to see you reach your goal so quickly.
When I watch yours, and other channels hit milestones like this, it only proves to me that perserverance, hard work, and integrity do exist and pay off!
All my best to you and Adrian!
P.S. As for your on camera "persona", a little discomfort is always good. It keeps it real, and honest. And it's that honesty that we all see and are drawn to.
*takes a bow* thank you so much - I may have to go hide under a pillow for a few minutes if that's okay?
You could use a graph like this for literally any job or life experience. We all have highs and lows. That is life.
I like your Graph. Great talk. It can be different for everyone of course. As always inspiring.
Thx Ed - you’re on camera persona is actually great! Another artist that is very good on camera is Andrew Tischler. Check him out it may help!
I will certainly do that Don - thank you so much for sharing that!
Great insight! Thank you very much.
Thank you so much!
Keep being Honest with us...
We'll always do our best James!
You are such an inspiration. I love this graph, I can definitely identify with this!
Many thanks! Most kind!
Great video Ed. Reminds me of a short book by Seth Godin, where he calls this 'The Dip'.
Ah! Cool - not heard of that so will check it out! Thank you very much!
Really enjoy your presentations. Professionally presented and very helpful. I'm sure most artists can identify with the things you're saying. Thanks for putting them up.
That's kind of you Michael, thank you!
Great stuff! I like how you explained it! 😁👍🏾
Thank you!
WELL DONE! Thank You.
Thanks!
I have worked very hard from 1981 to 2017, selling all my work. Now I have not been doing anything for two years. I am not depressed or unhappy but I just don't feel like it anymore. I sit in my chair and look outside, it strikes me that the branches of trees are consistently split into smaller and smaller branches. It is raining and the wind is moving the branches of the trees. That fascinates me, but don't do anything. nothing is what i am doing now.
Been there, done that. And I'm sure I'll be back there again someday. Wishing you well Peter.
Hi Ed, I just found you here & how refreshing you are. Love the tips and advice. Looks like I have lots of vids to catch up on lol. Thanks for passing on your experiences to us, I can relate to the graph & such a natural on that whiteboard 😉
Thanks Lyn - much appreciated!
I found this interesting as well as educational. This graph is me to a T. A big thumbs up, Ed.
Thanks you so much!
Hokusai painted his masterpiece " The Wave " @ age 84 .
One of the greatest!
Thank you, really helpful.
You are a natural in front of a Kamera, by the way! 🙋💖🇸🇪
How nice of you to say! Thank you so much!
Den tavlan är mera viktigt för dig.
VERY WELL SAID ED!
Nice concept graph idea! I suspect mine would look more like an EKG: still kickin. :-) Watching you sketch on that whiteboard, I wonder what kind of experimental animation you could do on that, kind of like that sand animation, where it's a build-remove kind of thing. And don't forget the cool soundtrack! Cheers, dears.
Excellent suggestions - thank you! I will take all that on board. Have a great day!
You appear pretty comfortable in front of the camera 😊.As I said before, very interesting and entertaining 🤗
Ah thanks Brianna - that's mighty kind of you :)
I want to try my hand on abstract painting. Is this medium oils or acrylics. Thank you you are truly inspiring the upcoming artists.
You are welcome - the paints are actually enamels and I have them made for me. You can learn more here: www.swarez.co.uk/using-enamel-paints/
This is brilliant
Thank you Wende!
Thank you as always , you are very inspiring , my situation is that I have an outdoor gallery and show many artists work during tourist season in the Kawarthas in Ontario and that is for only 2 months , meanwhile the other 10 months nothing is happening and again I thank you for the inspiring videos to keep pushing onward , as you had mentioned in prior videos is to diversify , so being the creative Canadian I have started hand carving little 5" canoes and stain them , this I am hoping will open up a new market , however also being an artist I feel I am being a sell out and creating a crafty kind of thing , your thoughts?
Thanks Daniel. Well, we never know what will happen until we try. If nothing gives then at least you know right? The worst thing we can do is stand still - if we do then we will never know if that killer idea would have worked or not. Always, always, always think about the next thing and the next thing after that. Kudos man - get stuck in and do it! They sound cool as f**k!
Thank you for another great video, is there one on how to start? I have lots of work now, I'm consistent with creating but I'm not selling anything. I have my website and IG but I'm stuck now. Any advise?
There is one form a year or so ago about Top ways to promote your art but it may be a bit out of date now. I will queue this up for a revisit.
Thank you for inspiring and sharing for the upcoming artists.what is the medium, is it oils or acrylic.
Neither - see answer to your other question...
"I hope you've got a cuppa coffee"....Tea, actually.
Yikes - I literally insulted every tea drinker in one go! How can you forgive me Beth?
By the way, all you artists, what do you think when people say, "I like your STUFF". Negative description? OK? Sometimes I find it irritating. This "STUFF", is my life, hard work, my heart, my soul, etc. you know... What can we do?
Some find it difficult to label our craft, sometimes out of confidence and often as a means to not disrespect (as I have found). 'Stuff' is a good starting point for a collection of creative output I guess. I can think of worse things!
Förvandla dessa liner på en jätte vacker tavla .
The graph will actually sell.its got order like blue poles.
Ha! I know it well!
Is it chille where u are?
You're not comfortable in front of the camera...….behave, you're a natural, another interesting vid, nice work.
Excellent , thanks !!!
THANKS VERY MUCH!
