And NO ONE in the States knew what this song was REALLY about! In fact, a radio spot for "New Clear Days" featured an American announcer slowly developing a Japanese accent! (No way in HELL that would fly today!)

Because it is about isolation and alienation, which are very depressing things to experience. It was just disguised in a very poppy, up-tempo package. That contrast was part of it's attraction. Nothing has changed except you, and your understanding of those feelings through personal experience. It is really a very appropriate song for the last few years.
