Why does this song sound depressing after hearing how it sounded back in the 80s

This is USA calling... This song was one of the very (very) few UK punk/mod songs to get American airplay! (The Buzzcocks, the Jam & the Stranglers rarely-if ever- appeared on Yank radio!) And NO ONE in the States knew what this song was REALLY about! In fact, a radio spot for "New Clear Days" featured an American announcer slowly developing a Japanese accent! (No way in HELL that would fly today!)
