In some cases not training is a perfectly fine thing to do. Taking a few days off isn't going to make all your gains vanish and it could prevent an even worse injury.
Good info as always. Language is really powerful. GPs here in the UK are notorious for inadvertently reinforcing negative attitudes to pain and movement. The best piece of advice I ever got came from a 70 year old powerlifter who actually got me squatting again after a had sprained a knee and all the mainstream advice was to never do squats.

@@pbmackatt how? I’m down to doing baby weights on my bicep work and I still get sharp pains. I just get nervous my bicep may tear or something crazy like that. Ill be lifting clothes on a hangar and I get sharp pain in my bicep
As a former specialized imaging technologist in CT and MRI, I wish you two were working in all the ER's I used to work in. I used to get so annoyed at doctors for ordering unnecessary imaging exams on patients who didn't need them.

man I hurt my back on saturday while benching :D For the rest of training session I did Romanian DL with empty bar and squats with empty bar. On sunday I did the same with 40-50 KG. Monday 70KG. My back is fine right now :) No pain at all, this already happened to me year and half ago, I didnt train for 3 months...now I am healed after 3 days :)
@@patrikm833 same for me hurt my back after pulling 180kg rounded and did low bar squats since it caused no pain and in couple days all back pain was gone from squatting 95kg 3x12 with some discomfort to 3 days later doing 140kg for 10 pain free. Would of never expected progress like that a year ago
I'm inclined to agree with the take on bad form and pain. My wife wasn't pushing her knee's out far enough on the squat, and she started to feel like her low back was extremely fatigued, and would pain on subsequent sets. Even though there was no true macrotrauma, her body, the level of stress was inducing a pain response.

Hi guys, I've been struggling with knee pain for a pretty long time now. I was diagnosed with fat pad impingement by a specialist. Went to a sports physical therapist and he's having me do all these Jane Fonda type exercises to activate my glutes since he says I struggle with glute activation. Seems like an ineffective way of treating the issue to me, do you have any tips for what exercises to do for recovery? I've also been told to stop squatting as this makes the pain worse.
Jordan. I have metallosis from metal-on-metal hip replacements (bilaterally). Do you know anything about weight-training with hip prostheses and if/how that could be a cause of metallosis? I can't find any actual research on this topic. I am trying to determine whether I should 1. have the hips replaced, and 2. whether I should be lifting in the meantime. Surgeon is risk-averse and wants me to not exercise. Not an option. Thanks for any leads
I think their approach is, generally, right on. But, i must say, their cynicism about injury borders on absurd at times,. Nonetheless, they are the best thing on RUclips, and we are so lucky to have them. They make great contributions, and work very hard to make this content available. They should get a presidential medal of honor.
Have u fixed it? I'm getting sharp pains in the left side of my right knee. I was still able to get to a 495 low bar squat somehow but now I had to back off as the pain started to get worse.
It’s been over a month and a half since my back started hurting. I strained it while deadlifting, no loud pop or snap. And no combination of stretching, therapeutic exercise, or visits the the chiropractor have been able to help, and I can’t understand why this is happening. I can squat heavy and do back extensions without any pain at all, but when I try to deadlift over 355, my lower back begins to feel intense pressure. I’ve had my form checked numerous times and I’ve been using a belt, I just can’t understand why I can’t get rid of this pain. I have my first comp in December and I am getting frustrated due to my inability to train appropriately on one of my three lifts. I’ve never had this issue before.
Thanks for this, calmed me down quite a bit. After squatting 107.5kg today on my NLP, the sides of my lower back severly ached, especially during hip flexion. Managed two sets of 5 but on the third set, after the unrack, I couldn't bend at the hip at all. Still aching couple of hours later but I don't think i've done anything serious. I'm curious if anyone knows what I should squat on Monday though?

I currently get this nagging pain when I walk or do lunges. My gate pattern is also crocked- I walk at an angle. The drug manufacturers are always misrepresenting the dangers of these drugs. It's a multi-Billion dollar industry and they are getting sued constantly over people getting killed by the drugs. When companies get sued for hundreds of millions of dollars, but still continue to produce the drugs they get sued over, you know they are making tons of money. It's a sign of how corrupt our government is that most of these drugs are still on the market.

I’ve recorded myself and my form seems to be pretty good. I believe I’m experiencing tendinitis on my knees. I would like to continue to improve my squat but knee pain seems to be getting worst, any avise??
Try a narrower or wider squat stance. It worked for me. You could also try knee braces to help keep the knee warm and reduce pain while squatting. I have had knee issues off and on for the better part of my life and I find that these both help a lot when I have pain.
Juan Torres try hamstring curls. I have sharp elbow pain, and it is the worst on bench press yet I have good form, it hurts on other elbow extension excersizes but bench is the worst. I have found though that the more curls I do, the better my elbow feels. So for you I would assume it hurts on squats more because of the more knee pressure. Maybe strengthening the other side of the joint will balance it and help. Idk just my guess

Internists / general medicine get roughly 3-6 weeks of musculoskeletal education in med school. Cut the PT’s some slack. I know you mentioned them but with great precaution and warning.
Completely agree that most internists have very poor training on this stuff. I also stand by the argument that most PTs out there have inadequate training in pain neuroscience and maintain an overly "structuralist" model of pain, particularly in the chronic setting.
I saw a video on youtube from some old fat chiropractor telling people that they should squat with one foot forward more than the other. I'm not a chiropractor, but I can already think of several reasons why that's a bad idea. This guy clearly had never done a squat in his life.

Start with body weight and work your way up until you start feeling pain, then stop.

Depends on the nature of the pain and other factors, but I would still be doing some type of squat for sure.

Muscle soreness doesn't tell us anything about the utility of the training session and if you should happen to have it- you should train.
