Lol i started out and tried crocheting for the first time with a 0.5 mm hook , and i lernt it right away so i think i wuld be good with hooks above 3 mm ?
my mom bought some reaaaally thin smol and short yarns with a smol hook the first time i told her I'm interested in crocheting lol A+ for effort i guess she chose that one because it's probably the cheapest. the yarns are like sample size lmao
FOR BEGINNERS!! I find bigger hooks are best. This is because you can find holes easier and you don't have to fiddle with tiny projects when you start them. When I started, I got really frustrated trying tiny hooks while making amigurumi! Try granny squares first and make bigger amigurumis. If you're planing to focus on pro leveled amis, use slightly smaller hooks that the yarn calls for, and also loosen your stitches. This will cause your stitches look neater. And don't worry about magic circles, you will soon learn to master them with patience and positivity 😉
I honestly don't even bother with magic loops, they're incredibly frustrating to me. I just chain 2-4 depending on if I want the circle completely closed or not and then just join the chains and crochet into that instead.
To start you probably don't want any too too big yarn because yes you can see your stitches very easily it can hurt a lot more because it take more force, so maybe not chonky sweater until your a little bit better Note: this is coming from an now one month crochet who started crochet and chonkyish sweater right now
Wish I would've seen this sooner but I just learned by myself yesterday lol, I changed hooks and FINALLY learned how to crochet even if it's a little bit, I went about 1 or 2 sizes up from the yarn recommendation and now it's easier and better to me trying to crochet
I use a 4.25 mm boye aluminum hook, and I only use yarn that is recommended for 5.5 mm hooks. I use it so much that its starting to bend in the middle after 3-4 years of use! (Its all aluminum, so you know that its been well used haha)
My first was a 6mm with medium weight. I made scrunches (looking back that was not practical because my hair wasn’t long enough). Eventually upgraded to a set and then crossed over to knitting 😭😭
For beginner projects like beanies, basic bralettes, and scarves, a 5mm is going to work well with almost any weight 4 yarn. Anything beyond that, you would want to decide your hook size on a case by case basis. If you're making something that you want to be looser/have bigger holes, size up your hook. If you want tighter stitches, size down your hook. Sizing up your hook can also help give your project a nicer drape.
My sibling does crocheting and they usually work in scarfs also a very big yarn for blanket and they recently brought a giant wooden hook for a thick yarn
Depends, pick something you want to make first. I bought yarn and a hook without knowing what I was gonna do with it. When I found something I actually wanted to make (that looked easy enough) , it was harder with the size I bought.
I have a few tips surgery wants to learn to crochet 1 I recommend using a bigger yarn and a bigger crochet hook that way it's easier to see what you're doing 2 make sure not to make your stitches too tight it will make it super hard to crochet in stitches next time 3 if you're just starting I recommend not using black yarn it's hard to see stitches when you're doing it in black I hope this helps ❤️ also I love your videos holly 🙂
Really any size is good for beginners, it's all about how the hook feels in your hand and how close you would like your stitches to be. Some hooks are more curved, and others are more pointy. So I would experiment with that, it's just that some companies make their hooks like that. I dont think they would have a purpose with different hook types. What I would worry about first is what type of project you want to start out with. I started off making stuffed animal's, which contrary to popular belief, I would not choose to use the super chunky yarn. It's hard to keep track of your stitches and uses more wrist movements making each stitch, I tried it and my wrists and fingers got very tired very quickly. But in the end, just start experimenting, what is comfortable for you is going to be different from what's comfortable for me.
i think 5.25 or 5.50 because thats what i used when i started and actually its the yarn that really matters. The size hook that i put is good for a normal yarn. What i mean by normal is not to chunky and not to thin because chunky and thin are hard to crochet with
I’m gonna vouch for those hooks as well. I started crocheting about five months ago and my hands hurt a lot. Those ergonomic grips saved my poor carpal tunnel and tendinitis having hands. It’s like 20$ and has all the common sizes. Tbh, I bought two, so I have extras of the ones I use most in case I lose one. Or both. 😂 I misplaced the 3.5mms pretty fast and just found them both again. I also think 4.5 to 6.5 are best for learning on, that’s going to be the majority of craft yarns that you find cheap, and they’re easy to work with for most people.
i just started to learn how to crochet and in all of the tutorials they’re using like 5mm hooks and im over here using a 25mm hook because that’s what the yarn said. glad to know it doesn’t matter!
5mm. Most cheap, cute, colorful, variety of yarn is worsted weight #4. But yeah it doesn't matter. I would recommend 4.25mm, 5mm, 5.5mm, and 6mm. Those will cover a wide range of yarns, and patterns.
The better question is which size YARN is best for beginners. For that, I say 3-6 depending on what you want to make. I would NOT recommend crochet thread or thin yarn. But if your dream project is a doily or table runner, I won't stop you. I would, however, suggest you start with a dishcloth, scarf or other small project before buying several skiens/spools and a tiny hook you will never use.
Size/weight yarn (see my first sentance and the fact my last paragraph is still talking about yarn thickness) In the US we have 0-7 scale for yarn In the UK/AU they use a ply count. My understanding is 3-6 weight may be 4-12 ply. It doesn't help that the. UK and AU use slightly different counts.
I got that exact hook kit on Amazon and I can’t recommend it enough! Size wise I’d recommend 4-5.5 or 6 to begin with but again you can use whatever size you want
I learned with a size G hook and weighted 4 yarn. Best decision i will ever make. The loops were easy to find and go into and it made a nice looking project. 100% recomend
This is a little tip from personal experience. Let's say the yarn label says that the recommended hook size is 8 mm. I recommend using a six and a half hook. Just trust me
I used to buy hooks for each project. Then I found the same crochet hook set you showed. Bought it on Amazon. Different videos said various things both good and bad about it. I like the feel in my hand, and the variety of sizes, yarn clippers, and markers, plus cute bag made it a great buy.
I think thicker yarn is much easier to work with. You can see the stitches much better and know what to put your hook in. Also a lot of fun to work with LOL.
And the hook isn't as important as good grip health and just healthy crafting habits like: stretching before and after, pausing to check that you're not clenching and substantial breaks to release tension from the neck, shoulders, and back, and legs depending on how you sit. Learning what tension you need to match a pattern's given gauge, or how to determine stitch size if you're starting to design your own work, matters more than hook size because it's possible to get extremely differently sized stitches with the same yarn and hook size. I always start students with the hook that feels most comfortable to hold without clenching and go from there. 👍
I would say use quite a large hook and yarn as a beginner because you can see the stitches more easily and also projects are faster which is much less frustrating if you are only just starting and it takes a long time 🙂
I suggest sizes 3-5 mm; they are right in between big and small! (Also, it mainly depends on the yarn, but moderate/average sized yarns work with 3-5 mm!)
for amigurumi, a good tip is to go a few sizes down from what your yarn recommends! it makes it a lot easier to keep the right tension so you dont have big gaps between stitches
Best for beginners imo is chunky yarn and hook size 8 and up. Its easy to hold yarn thats bulky and see stitches easier for a newbie. Then when you get the hang try all kinds of yarn. I like ergonomic hooks and found amazon hooks lighter in weight that bates hooks
Also! Sometimes you will find a range like 3-4.5. that means if you use hook Size 3 your project will get a little tighter than if you use a 4.5 Hook. Generally if you want a tight or loose project use a hook 0.5-1 sizes above (loose) or below (tight)
If I did have to say the best size, I’d definitely say start with medium weight yarn (#4, worsted). Not too small to learn technique and not so large that you’re limited.
l actually recommend buying one of those "Learn to Crochet" kits they sell at Michael's and JoAnn. Even if you don't use the patterns, they usually include a few different-size crochet hooks, tapestry needles, stitch markers, and a glossary of common crochet terms (with illustrations). If you wanna make stuffed animals it will say like 5.50mm but use more like a 3.50mm or a 4.00mm if you are going to make blankets or something like that use the hook size on the label hope this helps😊😊😊😊
i personally think starting with a bigger hook first is better. then figuring out whether you crochet tighter or looser and pick ur hook size on that. Also depends on ur hold on the yarn and if your yarn is getting stuck. I change hooks when i doing different things. edit: omg i use the same hooks and yarn, so affordable and good!😊
This is good to know. I just started and am having trouble because my tension is insanely tight and I just thought I was bad. Didn’t know it was normal
My sister really struggled with crocheting. I think that working with a bulky yarn and something like a K hook is perfect for a beginner (not sure what size that is in mm off the top pf my head)
I am the only family member to be able to make something for the next generation to learn and be able to see it on utube is great craft fashionable and unique to each person
Hello just some little crochet things I hope this helps (also I’m not a professional so if I get something wrong not hate pls just let me know) as a beginner I started out with a 5.5mm crochet hook and 8ply yarn if you are looking to start out and not sure if you are going to like it I suggest just getting a little kit or a hook and yarn (5.5mm or bigger & 8 or 12 ply yarn) that’s how I started and now I can make really cool things Good luck on your journey ❤😊
As a beginner I like a super bulky yarn. It takes enough time that you feel like you’ve accomplished something but not so long you start regretting life decisions
I use what ever hook I think would do what I want to do which rangers from 3mm-6mm. It depends how tight u want ur stitch to be in the long run. But mess with the large hooks it’s way easier than the smaller ones.
I’m really nervous and feel overwhelmed wanting to even try it. I just know absolutely nothing and I see these people talking about fancy loops that I feel like I should know about but don’t! Any advice to help?
Just try, try and try again and don’t get down on yourself if you can’t figure it out for a while. I tried a year ago, got frustrated and gave up. About 2 weeks ago I picked it back up and after a lot of trial and error and replaying videos on RUclips about 100 times I am finally doing it. Once you start figuring it out it gets easier and learning new stitches isn’t so scary anymore. I am making a duck and it’s so fun and surprisingly not as hard as I led myself to believe. You’ve got this! Just remember, everyone starts somewhere. ❤️🧶
Pretty much all fancy loops and projects come from the very basic stitches. My advice is to watch “crochet for beginners” videos which teach you the very basics. Bella Coco has a great one. Then, pick a beginner project you like, that’s not too big. A blanket would be too big and time-consuming. (It will make you lose motivation but if that’s the first project you want then go for it!) My very first project was a coaster (Sigoni Macaroni here on yt)not only it was very quick and easy to make, but also I got to learn the basic stitches. Tbh I tried to crochet years ago but got overwhelmed too so I gave up, but I picked it up again after seeing so many nice projects. Plus, crochet is very therapeutic once you get into it. I like to crochet when I’m stressed after work or when I watch my fave shows/listen to music. Don’t be frustrated if you don’t get it on the first day or two or a week or month, etc. because everyone is different and we all learn at our own natural pace. Good luck!! 🥰
For me the yarn size and project matter. If I’m making a plushie worth chenille I’ll use a size 5 which is 4 sizes smaller than recommended and sometimes my tension will be tighter than if I’m making a blanket. It’s all personal preference though at that point
That product is so cute, thank you. I actually had to crochet a case for my hooks bc I have so many of them they needed a bigger home. I'm still gonna get it, so thanks. Love your content
I don't recommend using the recommended hook size for amigurumi projects tho, the wholes would be absolutely leaking stuffing. I use worsted weight yarn that recommends a 5.5 hook but I use a 3mm hook for nice neat stitches with no leaky stuffing.
I love Susan bates hooks and my favorite brand of yard is red heart but I don’t use a 5.5 hook for my amigerumis I use a 3.25 hook and it makes my plushies look so much tighter and so much more adorable
BEGINNERS, LISTEN UP I’d recommend using a bit of a larger yarn, but not too big, so you can see your stitches. Also try a bigger crochet hook then what they recommend
I have 4 ply yarn and i use a 5.00mm hook, but sometimes, for large projects like amigurumi or stuff like that, i just take my 4 ply yarn and make it thicker
I wanna make easy cute toys but all of them are so hardddddd and I have no idea how to crochet. Do you have any easy tutorials or tips for me plzzzzzzzzzzz?

There are some hooks that are very tricky if you're a begginer, anything below 1.5 mm aka lace so probably don't go into that right away
Oh yeah the teeny tiny stuff is probably smart to stay away from i should have probably said that. I think everything above 3mm is probably fine!

Thank you you have taught me how to crochet I love your videos❤
I think starting around 5mm does work since it's not overwhelming large but not too small

I suggest sizes 3-5 mm; they are right in between big and small! (Also, it mainly depends on the yarn, but moderate/average sized yarns work with 3-5 mm!)
I got that kit before watching this video it’s very handy to use✨
This helps a lot, I was told a 5.0 mm was best but once I tried bigger yarn I've been learning more better 😁
FINALLY someone who gets it
You inspired me to start crochet
for amigurumi, a good tip is to go a few sizes down from what your yarn recommends! it makes it a lot easier to keep the right tension so you dont have big gaps between stitches
I started (and still only really use) a 3.5 mm hook. It was the most comfortable to hold and it’s what the stores around me had.
I have those same scissors in my clay bead set! 🥰
For beginners you actually need a 5 m hook and a 3.50 m hook because that’s what you’ll use mostly and both of the sizes are great for beginners 😊😊
Just ordered that little kit of hooks on Amazon. Thanks for the share
l actually recommend buying one of those "Learn to Crochet" kits they sell at Michael's and JoAnn. Even if you don't use the patterns, they usually include a few different-size crochet hooks, tapestry needles, stitch markers, and a glossary of common crochet terms (with illustrations).
You might spend a bit more than buying things separately, but you do get everything but the yarn in one package, ready to go.
Hi! I love your videos I learned crochet in 2 day only!
If you wanna make stuffed animals it will say like 5.50mm but use more like a 3.50mm or a 4.00mm if you are going to make blankets or something like that use the hook size on the label hope this helps😊😊😊😊
And for bigger yarn, when you’re crocheting plushys you can use pretty much as small of a hook as you want
My bestie wants me to teach her how to crochet. I'm starting her with worsted weight yarn and probably a 5.5-6mm hook.
Lol I was asked to teach a man how to make the things I do for fun and I will not speck about it lol😊
That's great to know.
:)
i personally think starting with a bigger hook first is better. then figuring out whether you crochet tighter or looser and pick ur hook size on that. Also depends on ur hold on the yarn and if your yarn is getting stuck. I change hooks when i doing different things.
edit: omg i use the same hooks and yarn, so affordable and good!😊
I was always told to take the recommendation and go up a size or two for beginners because they tend to have tight tension
Yep, my tension is still quite tight even though I've been crocheting for months now, so I always go a size bigger :P
This is good to know. I just started and am having trouble because my tension is insanely tight and I just thought I was bad. Didn’t know it was normal
4.5 is the best for beginners in my opinion
I use 5.5mm with my yarn
4 or 4.5 I think it is the best for beginners
I have one two!!
I always go one Size bigger, I don't think it makes too much of a difference to go one size up or down but it's was works for me personally 😅
The best hook for beginners is probably a 5mm hook though. You can make a lot with it and it’s not to big or small!
Oh my gods I have that same set! 🤩
I HAVE THE KIT TOO!
My sister really struggled with crocheting. I think that working with a bulky yarn and something like a K hook is perfect for a beginner (not sure what size that is in mm off the top pf my head)

Look at the packaging recommendation and subtract 2 for tight perfect stitches. 5.5mm would mean 3.5 and so on.

That product is so cute, thank you. I actually had to crochet a case for my hooks bc I have so many of them they needed a bigger home. I'm still gonna get it, so thanks. Love your content
OMG I use that kit !!!
I don't recommend using the recommended hook size for amigurumi projects tho, the wholes would be absolutely leaking stuffing. I use worsted weight yarn that recommends a 5.5 hook but I use a 3mm hook for nice neat stitches with no leaky stuffing.
For starters I recommend a normal medium weighted yarn with around a 5mm hook so they can see what they’re doing better
I'd say a bigger one is best for a beginner because you can easily see the stitches and where to go plus bigger yarn takes less time to crochet.
Thank you! I never knew this! I want to learn how to crochet and I’ve been trying to for a few weeks now and this helped me incredibly!
I mainly use 3.5 on worsted weight yarns! Only downside is it makes really dense stitches
I love Susan bates hooks and my favorite brand of yard is red heart but I don’t use a 5.5 hook for my amigerumis I use a 3.25 hook and it makes my plushies look so much tighter and so much more adorable
BEGINNERS, LISTEN UP
I’d recommend using a bit of a larger yarn, but not too big, so you can see your stitches. Also try a bigger crochet hook then what they recommend
What's your amazon? Where can I get it? Also when you get the kit will it say which hook it which?
I'm very comfortable with the 6.0mm hook
I have 4 ply yarn and i use a 5.00mm hook, but sometimes, for large projects like amigurumi or stuff like that, i just take my 4 ply yarn and make it thicker
What is the best crochet stitch for a blanket????
I would say anything about 5.5 to maybe 9 and the right size yarn just so new to crochet can see the stitches
I wanna make easy cute toys but all of them are so hardddddd and I have no idea how to crochet. Do you have any easy tutorials or tips for me plzzzzzzzzzzz?
In my opinion the best is 5.5-6
Also when you are making anything amigorumi, use a hook two sizes smaller than the yarn says so a there's no gaps
I’m using the same brand of yarn!
I want to make granny squares first. What type of hook size should I use ? I'm a total beginner .😊
It does matter. 6-4mm is correct for beginners xx
