tip: if you're planning on making amigurumi/plushies, pick up a crochet hook that is 1-2 mm smaller than the recommended side for the yarn. this helps to keep your stitches small and tight so that there are less large holes in the project for the stuffing to show through. do keep in mind that going 2mm below recommended size can sometimes make it much more fiddly to work with, so as a beginner a 1mm decrease in hook size is probably more ideal :)

Great video! I started in November and my preferences so far:
-I hate plastic needles, steel is better
-Amore Crochet hooks are the best ergonomics; flex those JoAnn coupons and it’s less expensive
-Stitch markers are a life saver
-DO NOT start with dark colored yarns even though they are your aesthetic, choose neutrals if you’re allergic to bright colors
-be patient and do one project at the time
-do something you’re excited about (I went crazy and did a patchwork cardigan)
    -master the basic stitches first
-experiment with texture, cotton has a learning curve but it’s achievable
I’ve always wanted to learn, so I’m self taught; pretty jelly of those who had grandparents teaching you, cherish them!

I have been planning to start with the patchwork cardigan because it is tooo aestheticcc!!! But since I found you who's first project was the same thing as which I was planning to make, I have just a few question... Is crocheting a patchwork cardigan too hard as a first project of a complete dumbass who didn't crochet before and just knows some basic stitches like chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet etc??? I just wanna make sure I don't mess up big time lol 😅...

FOR BEGINNERS. I’ve never bought stitch markers in my life. They are incredibly useful and a MUST for when your crochet but I use Bobby pins instead and they work just fine, so if you don’t wanna spend too much money, Bobby pins are for you

@@Karina-jm2oeI've done this in a pinch too. Actually I prefer using pieces of wool as stitch holders. I find I loose my stitches often with the plastic/metal stitch holders, so I take some waste wool and thread it through my stitches and then tie both ends together. ❤

    My tips for beginning resources:
    - Yes, medium to bulkier yarn is great especially for learning so that the stitches are visible and easy to maneuver.
    - Preferably i'd suggest a "chainette construction" yarn, which has its "threads" interwoven instead of twisted together so that its not likely to splice while you work with it, causing frustrations.
    - Yarn light in color is really nice for visibility of said stitches.
    - Avoid plushy, fuzzy or velvet-y yarn, theyre known to have the fuzz rip off of the thread its on, making it harder to weave in ends, and quite slippery to work with.
    - And lastly i'd suggest a plastic hook since atleast for me personally it was a smoother experience to learn with than metal, for its lack of grip on certain yarns.

My pro-tip is that the anti-pilling yarns are super easy to work with for beginners because something about the way they’re made makes it so you don’t get little bits and bobs in the way that make it harder to see, and it’s almost impossible to split stitches.
Also, start with a crochet hook with a rounded tip. Personally, I prefer an inline hook with a point for regular use, but for beginners the hooks with rounded ends are so much easier for picking up stitches and not splitting them :)

I picked up crochet as a covid hobby and I FELL IN LOVE! It was a way to feel grounded in a time when the world felt like it was going to end. I had a lot of personal stuff happening in my life as well and this was a way to let the thoughts in my head speak and then let them go. I lost my aunt suddenly in November of 2019 and she loved crocheting doilies so this was a way to feel closer to her. I thought doilies would be my first project but I think it was actually a scrap yarn basket or a crappy black scarf with acrylic yarn. Then I moved on to the Harry Styles-inspired sweater which I have never finished. Now I am making three temperature blankets which you inspired me to do and I am learning how to make money selling my craft. I am currently working on a sunflower granny square tote bag and a mushroom tote bag. I love this community and the endless possibilities. If you all need a grounding hobby or something to give your hands something to do I highly recommend this instead of knitting since crocheting is much easier to pick up.

I have several comments on this:
    1. I love how passionate and smiley you are! I've recently gotten into crochet and watched this to make sure I was easing into it as well as I could, and your good mood really hit home; crochet really is such a calming, rewarding craft.
    2. My mind BOGGLES at how huge your (I'm guessing USA) yarn shops! There's so much variety it's crazy!
    3. In terms of my favourite yarn, I'd say size 4. I got a kit of many small bundles of yarn with all of the basic colours and some variations, because I mainly started with amigurumi, and they are all size 4. On top of that, the vast majority of the yarn I had bought for knitting was also size 4, and so that's the standard size that I use, which is nice because I think it's the one I find most often in shops.
All in all, this video was really cute, informative, and nice to watch. I decided to watch this while crocheting my second fingerless lace glove, and it made me smile throughout :)

I have found it easier to have 1 big project I can do in front of the TV and some small projects I can do whenever I want to. My blanket is just 1 huge granny square and I am making it for our queen-sized bed.

Thank you! Just started a few days ago and you showing the big size yarn makes me confident to get some for myself. I bought a 50g yarn and I couldn't even finish the headband that I wanted to make so I settled with only 4 rows. I am gonna buy everything you recommended coz they all make sense! Thanks! And I am jelly with people who had grandparents teaching them. I am gonna teach my kids.

As someone who had tried to teach myself how to crochet several times in the past and was finally successful after many tries that resulting in giving up for months or years at a time, I strongly suggest finding a single ply yarn. One of the ones that looks more like a cord than a "yarn" as it will allow you to learn the feel of getting things in the right place, without accidentally grabbing part of the yarn all of the time. Once I worked with one like that for a while, I was able to go to the super cheap yarn that everyone seems to recommend and actually have success, but before doing that, every time I tried with cheap twisted yard, I was constantly grabbing the wrong stuff and splitting my yarn and just getting super frustrated and then walking away again.

Excellent video. Makes me wish I had RUclips back when I was ten and grandma was teaching me to crochet. But since there was no internet or even home computers back in the dark ages, it’s nothing but a wish. Your happy demeanor and encouraging style is infectious (in a good way, not in a Covid way!)

I am in my early 30s and it took me 3 different stages in life to be reintroduced to crochet and really finally GET it. it takes time and patience. If you get stumped by something and want to give up, set it aside, find a small joyful quick project to substitute for the time being. last year i got back into crochet by making holiday ornaments. I LOVE this other youtubers patterns for their mini beanie, mitten, and stocking ornaments. I had made their full size beanie pattern, and came across the mini ornament version.
It took me my grandma, my (left-handed) best friend, and countless youtube videos and free patterns to get here, so here I am, 32 years old, now designing/writing my own patterns!

As a relatively new person crocheting bulky fluffy yarn is my FAVORITE! Yeah it's a little tricky to see your stitches but it's super easy to hook on to unlike thinner yarn. Thick yarn ftw💖 ALSO I recommend using a hook size that's smaller than the recommended size 💀 if it says to use a 5.0 mm hook I usually use a 4.0 just because I find it easier to use that way. Anyways hope that my goofy tips help I've only been crocheting for about a year 😅

My first project was a round scarf. The fun part is that I switcht to a bigger hook, and it widened the scarf. It is perfect because it fits perfectly around the shoulders and gets smaller around the face.
Now I am making a Christmas tree 🎄, because I would love to put a self made project with the Christmas cards as an extra gift

I actually found blanket yarn super comforting to work with. I once made a fox for a baby and I didn't enjoy doing it because it wasn't the yarn I was comfortable using but I ran out of time to find orange blanket yarn. I would say yo try different yarn types and find out which one is the most comfortable for you! ❤ have fun beginner crocheters!

I started crocheting with Jumbo yarn but it was with my fingers. I probably would've given up if I had to use the hook size. When I started making more projects I moved down to level 4 medium yarn with a 5mm hook and I loved it. Definitely wish I saw this video before starting to crochet :)

I tried learning to crochet a couple of years ago on medium yarn and I hated it, I didn't understand what I was doing and I gave up. My sister-in-law started crocheting again 2 weeks ago and I decided I wanted to get into it too. I found a beautiful chunky rainbow yarn and I made my 1st crochet project. It's a terribly made, completely single-crochet bag I winged and didn't use a pattern for but I am still super proud of it. I am now working on my 2nd project, a hat. It has a pattern and I learned how to half-double-crochet. Im so excited

what i recommend for beginners are the woobles beginner yarn! it does not have to be woobles! there are companies online that sell it for cheaper. it helps you see your stitches and it used a decently sized hook for every beginner! it’s mainly preferred if you are starting with plushies, but it’s amazing!
