  • Recently one of my Dell notebook computers experienced a catastrophic failure to the power supply/battery charging portion of the circuit board. Rather than throw away the computer, I found another way to power the computer without having to constantly recharge the battery. Enjoy the video!

    Excellent work.
    I have a big Dell laptop/workstation that was acting up (couldn't play audio properly -- the audio kept sputtering, like the system could not keep up). After reinstalling the audio driver too many times, I discovered that if I let it boot while on battery (i.e. charger not plugged in) it worked fine, but if I booted it while plugged into the Dell charger, it would not run fast enough. It turns out that that charger was too small (in Dell's view) to run AND charge the laptop, so when the BIOS detected that, it crippled the clock rates to save power to the point that it could not even play audio.
    At some point I had told it during boot that I didn't care about the charger was too small, and after that it never showed the warning that the system would be crippled.
    Booting while on battery, then connecting the charger was a good workaround. Also, getting the proper charger worked.

    All the laptop AC adapters I have ever seen are a nominal 19V @ about 4.5 amps. Are you sure the AC adapter is not bad ? I assume you load checked your AC adapter. Maybe the battery is bad and is pulling down the power rail when you plug in the adapter. Did you try just running the laptop off the AC adapter with the battery removed, You can run a laptop without the battery installed just off the adapter. You may be right that the internal power supply / charger got fried and this is a great work around.

    (Just wondering have you tried in increasing the power supply gradually in 0.1 volt increments, i-e, 12.7, 12.8, 129. ... 15 volts). I have a strong feeling that it might work on higher voltage range as well because with same motherboard, some laptops have 4S instead of 3S. Pls try and let me know!)

    Couldn't you have reduced the voltage of the original switching supply to 12.8v instead of using an alternate power source? or does it not produce enough current? Also, and I'm not sure about this, on this particular laptop, but in many cases, you can enter the BIOS to turn off the battery fault detection in the settings, to escape the recurrence of the battery error message at bootup... just a thought...

    Excellent idea! This is JUST the kind of workaround I have been looking for. I have an old 13" MacBook A1342 from 2010, with a broken DC-in board, where you connect a Magsafe charger, that supply 45 or 60 or 85wats. Everything Apple is expensive, so i want to use what i already have. The battery that is labeled 10.9 volt should give max 12.4 v at full charge. Well, this battery is dead, wont charge. I have a 12.2v power supply but i am not sure how to connect since Apple has built in different chips both in motherboard and battery to communicate with each other. Any ideas or tips?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  3 года назад +1

      Hi Erik! That's the nominal voltage, 12.6 is the fully charged voltage. A 12.2V supply is perfect, as long as the current level is high enough. You can always rip open the battery pack, remove the cells, and connect the power supply (+) and (-) to where the battery was connected. Good luck! @@electronicsNmore Thanks for the reply, but sadly it seems it wont work. From what i read online, Apple put some "electronic fuse" or something inside the battery, and if, for ex, the voltage inside ever drops to a certain low (because a cell go bad), it blows the fuse, and the circuit is broken and even if you replace the cells, it wont work. Same then if I put DC in instead of the cells. VERY frustrating.

    • @erikmagnusson5031
      @erikmagnusson5031 2 года назад +2

      Update: I found a workaround to make it work! With Mac-laptops, you need to use "bypass SMC-mode", or whatever its called, (disconnect all power, hole power button 10 sec, connect power, keep holding power button 10 sec, then release, the press power again). Then the laptop powers up, on 12 volt DC in via battery plugg. Now I am here to find out how to do this on an old HP/Compaq laptop where I have no battery, so its a bit difficult to figure out pinouts....

    Edit 2* sorry I’m reading through the comments seeing you’re getting a lot of similar questions, I see you put less than 12.6 volts and 4-5 amps SHOULD work but stick close to MY specific battery output specs... Hello I like your tips, do you think I could find a universal adapter that’s close enough? I don’t have a bench supply. My battery output is 10.6 volts, not sure about the amps. I found a 12 v adapter but it’s only 3 amps current. I noticed you said you had 4.5 amps and needed 5 to power the laptop normally? Wondering if a 12 v adapter with 5 amps would work for me? I know it’s hard to say for sure but I really want to get this laptop working. *edit* the laptop is powering on with everything working except the screen. It’s a gateway nv53...hmm

      Probably lacking power to keep it running, try another power supply 1A higher. You may be able to adjust some BIOS settings.

      electronicsNmore hey thanks for your quick reply. My power supply is a multi voltage powerbank rated for 90W. I found that when I bridged the temperature sensor pin to ground it works... so perhaps this is a PTC sensor where the resistance increases with higher temperature. So not grounding it will tell the laptop the battery is too hot and it will turn off? Anyways It’s working now. Thank you!

    I bought a new battery for my Alienware, didn't fix the problem so I purchased a new power supply, still doesn't work, tomorrow I'm going to try this and let you know if it works :) My power supply is huge, 19.5v and 20 amps. The battery is 14.8v. So I guess I need a power supply of 14.8v and at least 5amps? Does that sound correct?

    hi, does this work with any cables/wires?
    my battery is an internal one and uses very thin wires. I wanted to keep the wires and the little plastic connect outlet to fit it into the board no problem, so I soldered on some wire with about the same diameter but it's made out of one solid metal instead of those fibers. would it still work? does it have a higher resistance or anything? also cable wires are thicker than these so would there be a problem soldering them onto a charger with normal cable wires and the right voltage and current? should I be worried about something catching fire?

    Hello, Cool video. I have a Dell Inspiron 13 7000 series 2 in 1 laptop that the power supply port/receptacle broke off of the motherboard. I can’t find a motherboard replacement that I can afford and wondered if you know of a way to power the the motherboard via a USB-a port or any other way to power the laptop and keep the battery charged? On the machine I have it requires taking the bottom off to access the battery or I would go that route. I would go the route that you used but I need to move the laptop from place to place. Do they make a USB-a charger or adapter that can recharge the battery? I am at a loss of what to do, being a disabled senior on a small monthly income I can’t afford a new motherboard. I have tried a couple of used MB’s from eBay and both would not work so I am afraid of the $129-$179 used boards.
    With your knowledge I wanted to ask if you may have a solution. I feel if we can put a craft on Mars there should be a way to charge the battery without taking the computer apart every few hours. With as many computers out there without a USB-c port someone should develop a way to charge via the USB-a port and make a fortune. Thanks in advance for your input it is greatly appreciated.

    I have the same issue with my Samsung laptop. The laptop worked a month ago and randomly it started smoking and stopped charging from the charger because the charging port is broken, so do you think replacing the port will fix it or is it something else like a chip causing it to smoke? I'm a little worried since the laptop still worked before the problem and was pretty useful although it was 9 years old. Of course I have another laptop but I don't want to waste a laptop unless it's fully broken...

    Hi, can you tell me why not every battery can be meassure? For example i have 2 batteries that does not show any voltage on output, but once you add them to laptop, everyting it's fine. But right now i have other problem. Hp 6530B, i don't have any output voltage on laptop's pin. Not battery, but on the laptop. There is no voltage to battery. But if i add the battery and i meassure the pins inside, there is unstable voltage 0 to 13 volt. Once you remove the battery it goes to 0.50.

I'm assuming the board with all of its diodes is used for the communication pieces of the pins would this be correct. And if this is correct does that mean I can connect the power directly to the pins.
