As a deaf woman I am very often not taken seriously by society, not even as a landscape photographer at all. So I understand how you feel. It's so frustrating sometimes, but I believe in my abilities as a photographer no matter what they say

I believe that incorporating yourself into your images is a creative expression that you do very well. Keep doing it. There are many ways to make a photo interesting and beautiful. I’m a 66 year old male and in my travels before retiring I saw many instances of bias toward women, and as you said, some came from other women. Mads Peter Iverson, photographer, incorporates himself into some of his photos. He does it to show scale. But just the same, he does it. Stay on course, you’re good.

I've been a landscape photographer for 16 years and I have a few stories I could share myself ;) I follow a lot of landscape photographers here on RUclips and you are right, there is mostly men. Sarah, great video and you are absolutely correct about female photographers not being taken seriously. I've noticed on many occasions when there are a number of photographers at a location and often when a man approaches another man they seem impressed with what they are doing and ask questions - but when that same man approaches a woman they immediately start trying to teach her how it's done. It's an interesting dynamic that seems to repeat itself.
Sarah you are a wonderful and beautiful photographer, inside and out. You were the better person here. I hope the male photographer said something to her, if not shame on him. I am 69 years young and you inspire me, your photography is amazing, love the self portraits with the beautiful background. We are all a community and we should all work together. Keep up the awesome work!

FANTASTIC VIDEO SARAH!! One thing in my 40+ years of working. I have noticed that interaction between women seems to benefit of too ways. Loving and supportive or snarky, snobbish, catty, and downright hurtful! Not all, but I think it has a lot to do with competitive comparison and power control. Not to say men treat each other great. There is something about the way women deal with each other that, at times, would be compared to a male shovenist pig. I don't understand it. I suspect they feel threatened by other successful, intelligent women or their beautify. Our society has stamped beautiful women as the poster for sexy. That triggers all kinds of unfair and unfortunate circumstances. So when it comes to women treating other women badly, is it because they are women or somehow in competition? This is coming from a 59 year old man that thinks the world should just stop putting a label on things and groups of people and just impower everyone to be the best they can be. Not one group, of a certain race or sex. Everyone should treat everyone with grace and respect as they want to be treated. But what do I know? I am a white male. Which puts me in a whole different group these days. lol
Ps I think I heard the interview that you mentiined. That interview is the one that shined a light on you , not for the reason the question implied, but your take on landscaoe photography intrigued me enough to do my due diligence and check you out as a person to learn from.
Side note the other photographer that I mentioned you are tied with for a must meet and pick your minds. Is also a women. She has a very successful Miley Way night scape photography business. Check out the After Dark podcast by Kristine Richè, Kristine Rose Photography. I think you would like and enjoy her.

Isn’t it such an interesting world. That interview was such a long time ago and I was not prepared for that question 😂 !!! I felt it was an interview about landscapes and of course the self portraits and I know how society views women. I just don’t see myself that way about using my body for a following so it made me think, wait a second, do people think this when they see my self portraits? I was mostly just embarrassed, but it definitely makes a good little topic for an interview so I get it.

G’day. I’ve only just started following you and love your photography. Your environmental selfies are fantastic. But even if you take yourself out of the photos, the resultant landscape photo would also be fantastic.
One positive that is see from your photographs, is about body image. Young girls and woman can see that you are comfortable and happy with the way you look.

Sarah, I admire you for addressing issues like this. So many people stereotype others and then adjust their attitudes to that false image. Personally, I take each person individually and let them express who they are as we move along. I'm new to your channel but already, I see in your work that it offers a lot of value to me as I develop as a photographer. I especially like your signature idea of the yellow dress self portraiture. It gives me ideas about what I could do that would mark a personal style I could use for all my work. Keep at it. I will follow your progress to see how you develop your ideas.👍
As a male photographer who loves to photograph landscapes and portraits of women, I admit I'm slightly envious of the fact you can combine both so easily! I've only rarely had the chance to have a model come along on a landscape photoshoot. I started watching your channel because, quite simply, your work is excellent and there's lot to be learned from it, especially since I don't do nearly as much long exposure work.
Now if I ever truly get envious, I guess I could find a nice long flowing dress and put it on my myself 🤣

Sarah you are beautiful ,your images are stunning ..I can`t believe in our modern world there are still people who are still living in Victorian times and can`t except women are an equal in modern society,sadly I know it is still a huge thing and you usually find it is the older generation .I feel strongly about this as I grew up with a Dad who treated my Mum like this
From my experience in any walk of life women are as able in more ways then men to do things with more planning and precision and need to be respected .I certainly agree with everything you said in this video and am shocked and sorry for what these people said to you .Very well done for standing up and fighting for what is rightfully yours .On a lighter note have you thought about coming to Devon and Cornwall in the uk for some different beautiful countryside for expanding you`re brand .Keep up your amazing work .

Wish I had seen this sooner. Or at least before the video you posted after. I have been working on starting a you tube channel about the life lessons I learned through my decades as a photographer. This would include the obstacle of being a woman in photography. I was told on more than one occasion that women photographers should only do portraits, weddings and babies. I once belonged to a group with 25 members and i was the only woman. No one ever took me seriously. The number of women who are putting themselves out front in the photographic community has grown significantly.
I’m so sorry you experienced that nasty woman! As another female photographer I appreciate and respect your work. BTW I am much older with many more year’s experience than you and still learn from you. Stay strong!

What counts is what you can do. I follow (as a man) your videos about landscape photography, it doesn't matter if you are a woman or a man. Only in the yellow dress do I prefer to see a woman like you. Just keep going and don't bother about the others.

Yes yes, a thousand times yes! I am so glad you are addressing this. I would add to it though and say that there are just as many excellent women in landscape photography as men, they just don’t get as much exposure (pun partially intended) or, as you say, they aren’t taken as seriously. There are also issues with men having more disposable income and therefore being able to spend their money on the latest photography gadget (how many women have you seen using drones like you do), again contributing to the false narrative that women just ‘aren’t as good’.
It think there is too much comparison with men as well. There is an idea that the best way to take a picture is how a man would take a picture, and not looking at the woman’s view of the world. Your pictures feature you in them wearing a lovely yellow dress. This is how you choose to express yourself, and yet you have been criticised for making yourself the subject. But does Mads Peter Ivesen get asked this question? He regularly puts himself in the landscape photo, and gets praised for it. Blackcrag doesn’t put himself in the photos he sells, but his RUclips channel is as much about him taking us for lovely guided hikes around the Lake District as it is about his photography. More so, in fact.
I 100% agree with you that women need to champion fellow women, and I try to make sure that I follow as many women as I can who are putting themselves and their fantastic work out there on Instagram, Vero and RUclips. We should also be championing the people of colour (especially women!) as well, because they are even less represented than white women. And that’s already pretty darn low!
Finally, you ARE a feminist, and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for using that word to describe yourself. Feminism is about equality and equity, not supremacy of one gender over another. You say yourself that you think men and women have equal contributions to make to photography, and that’s a feminist statement. You’re calling for women photographers to be taken as seriously as men: that’s a feminist viewpoint. Embrace it, work with it, use it. I genuinely don’t understand why (North) Americans are so afraid of that word.
Hi Sarah. I think you presented the issue very well. There are those out there that still see women as the lesser gender but in time they will be extinct : ). I have to say that I love the unexpected splash of yellow especially in rugged locations. When you are in the photo, you often add a sense of emotion that we otherwise could not see. That being said, your landscape photographs are wonderful whether you are the point of focus or not. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your tutorials!

My thought about inserting yourself into your photographs is that it is no different than when a male photographer photographs himself in a scene to show scale or as an interesting subject to draw the viewer’s eye into the scene. Sorry, but I had to laugh. If I see any headless female photographers out there, now I'll know why. But, it makes me wonder why she signed up for the tour if she knew you were one of the leaders. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. I have absolutely no problem with people playing to their strengths as long as they recognize their weaknesses and try to improve those. Unfortunately there are always people who like to criticize others. But, as someone once said to me, just let it roll off of you like water off a ducks back. Keep doing what you love and you'll be successful.

I guess I never realized there was such a discrimination in regards to women landscape photographers. I subscribe to 6 channels - 3 of such are women. In fact, I purposely searched out women landscape photographers when I found your channel. Eye opening.

In an ideal world the only thing we should be discussing about photographers is their skill, not their sex, race, religion, etc.
Unfortunately, we don't yet live in an ideal world. I've known, and known of, many great and amazing photographers, some who happen to be women. It would be great if this didn't need to be a topic, but I'm glad that there are amazing voices, such as yours, that are working to spread the message and change perceptions.

I've been thinking on the Women In Photography topic over the past week (something in the air?!) or so and am wanting to do a video on the subject next week, I think. After listening to your video just now, my perspective might be a little different than yours, and that's a good thing because we are all different, and I'm wondering if this is generational? I think I'm going to have to ask the guys I went to art school with back in the day, but I remember feeling that we had tons of support from my fellow photographers, a lot of women photographer role models, and that photography was one of the art forms that really didn't discriminate because of gender. If I didn't get the job, or the exhibition, it was because I screwed up. Part of me was too shy to be any sort of commercial photographer. In photography I have always felt that I am a person who makes photographs (or makes art whether that is photography or painting, I studied both), not a woman who makes photographs (although that is true too). Women, maybe it's older women, in the arts tend to be harder on the people they mentor - I know I am because I want to create a sense of discipline and a critical eye. Also, on another note, I totally get why that guy asked you that question in the podcast interview from a journalistic stand point. Did I just ramble?
Hehehe… who doesn’t love a good ramble? The generational thing is an interesting topic! Would be fun and enlightening to get a podcast episode going with women having a good conversation about it all 💛

Some women just do NOT get along with other women. I don't understand it, but have come across several in my life. As a woman myself, I find your videos inspirational, your personality charismatic and your attitude bubbly and infectious. What is not to like? That woman must have been very self loathing or perhaps jealous of your natural cheerfulness and beauty. I for one look forward to learning more landscape photography and the process you go through for both landscapes and self portraits. Keep being you! As for other women on RUclips, you're right there aren't many, and certainly none as inspiring as you are. The couple others I follow are Courtney Victoria and Kim Grant. There are more, but I find them harder to watch, not sure what it is. Maybe they're not as bubbly or to slow and methodical in the videos?
Appreciate it! Yes, it’s natural for some women to not get along. It was a little difficult to work on that tour that I was co leader of and most importantly, it was really uncomfortable for the other participants. One bad apple can definitely bring down everyone’s experience. We handled it well and took care of the issue.
It’s my personally type to be quite bubbly, open and extroverted. Some people will do well on camera and be engaging and some won’t. You can learn how to do so! I believe in being authentic and just being who I am 😊💛

A person's value should never be judged by their gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, etc. It should be judged by the type of person they are and the work they produce. Your images are inspiring, and your lovely personality is captivating. This is why I subscribed to your channel and always watch your videos. If your images were garbage or your personality was off-putting, you wouldn't have nearly as many followers, including me :)

I can't touch the mood of the image in a photo or possess it. Creatives dance with the nuances of those things but the reactive can only possess them. Landscape is not a territory, it's alive. Thank you for sharing. Women are usually better at complimenting some things, so they see what is not there more acutely and feel what is. Boy I could add some choice comments especially about that comment of the guy asking you are you using your body in your pictures? Those pictures are just beautiful and I think from a male point of view they often see women as a sexualized object even if it’s just a little bit. it’s just there for them and it’s part of part of their culture, which is too bad.

Hello Sarah, You mentioned you were going back to London and then onto Scotland; you may remember I recommended Camden Lock on your previous video from London and Maida Vale; with the latter, I would recommend Little Venice. I was there two weeks ago and the weeping willow in their spring, yellowy greens were amazing. It was a bit blustery with showers and the sky was constantly changing. Little Venice is a junction where the Regents Canal comes off the Grand Union Canal and then the Paddington Branch of the Grand Union goes in another direction. There is a sort of roundabout in the middle. The buildings around are listed and the whole area hasn’t changed in all the time I’ve known it. I think Little Venice and, maybe one of the narrow boats there, would work really well for your style of self portraiture. Maybe you could persuade a boat owner to take you over to the roundabout. The nearest tube station to Little Venice is Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo Line. There is still some original tiling in that station.
