Loved Kananaskis when I was there last year. Incredible mountains. And fond memories of the lake and people I met there. A couple of things that anyone who is in a rut might want to try. First, a change of scenery. Try a new location. Take a trip. If you are tired of the same locations that you've photographed a hundred times before, try someplace new to stimulate your eyes and mind. Secondly, try using a different focal length to photograph a subject. Try a different lens than you would normally use for a certain subject. Third, try taking just one lens out to shoot everything. It will make you think and force you to try new perspectives. You might be surprised at the results. The keeper rate might not be as high, but you might like the keepers more than you thought you would. And, if all else fails, take a break. Do something else for a while. Recharge. And when you come back, you might find that you have more energy and appreciation for why you began doing photography in the first place.
@@sarahlyndsay Thanks, Sarah. Harvey is one of my favorite movies. At one point the psychiatrist is lying on the patient couch and Jimmy Stewart is sitting in the doctor's chair. The psychiatrist says that he would like to meet a woman in Akron, but wouldn't want her to speak. Jimmy Stewart says that he thinks that's a mistake and if she's been around at all she might have picked up some interesting news items. I've just been around for a while and picked up a few things. 🙂
You said something like "I can't articulate my thoughts..." Wrong! You are articulating that beautifully. Words of wisdom for sure. Very impressive and clear. Thanks
100% true words, the best artists don't just lock themselves away from the world all the time, they need to be inspired !! Loved the shot, it worked out very well and of course, the dronage was on point.. even in the rain :)
The smoke and haze that has been blanketing central and northern Alberta has sucked the life out of everything. I live in a highrise in Edmonton, and spend many of my evenings sitting on the balcony reading a book and watching the sunset. This year we have had a total of two sunsets, and the rest have been obscured by smoke or clouds, but mostly smoke. It's depressing and makes me want to toss my gear off the balcony some days, but I have to be hopeful that better days will come, it's just hard to be creative.
Yes the smoke can be a bit much! Very sad to see what it is doing to our precious Canadian land. My brother lives in Edmonton and I come out there often to see my nephews!!
I totally thought you were going to try to get the dress doing, a slight twirl under the water (though a CPL might be needed to help with that) when you were slowly turning in the water. Great shot. I totally agree with you about the long term rut. I think it's a lack of pushing yourself to get out there. When I'm lacking inspiration I like to go find something I don't normally shoot. And during Stampede that's easy. Because there's so much you can photograph. Or video like I've been playing with lately! Great stuff.
The dress sank quickly and I wanted to do something with it but was mega confused as to how to make it not bubble up and sink at the same time haha! When there is that much material, it often forms bubble pockets before sinking right to the bottom. Thank you so much for watching! Means the world Brad!
Inspiration is sooo overlooked, it leads to motivation. Without motivation, where are we. Another gorgeous shot and thumbs up on the drone. I love flying my drones, so much fun!
The smoke is from the Canadian wildfires. Today here in Louisville Ky we have a haze from the wildfires. A few weeks ago we had a very unhealthy alert.
I can’t imagine getting into a creative rut living where you do…but I’m sure it happens. The smoke worked for you! We’ve had health warnings the past couple of days in Iowa from those same Canadian Wildfires! Pretty nasty stuff! I like the Sunday release! I watch Nigel Danson every Sunday before church and have plenty of time to add you to my routine! Great job today. Thanks for taking me along!
Awww well I am happy to hear you can fit me into your sunday rotation! Means the world Randy! Yes, sometimes I fall into a creative rut even here in the rockies. I am constantly looking at other works for inspiration!
Another gorgeous Yellow Dress shoot Ms. Sarah! I use kind of the same technique - in and out - to spark my creativity, but I didn't know that was what it's called. 😎 I've also been inspired a little more by changing how I think of myself as a photographer - Blake Rudis says we're artists, not just photographers or creators. To answer your question about your piloting skills, I think they look pretty darn good! I'm thinking about upgrading from the Mini 2 to the Mini 3 Pro. One more thing about creative ruts: I tend to fall into them more easily during the winter season, my 67-year old bones are a lot more sensitive to cold than they used to be back when I was a youngster like you. Peace - 💜💜
Oh yes I can so relate about the winter months!! Even though I am Canadian, I really don't like snow! Input output! Such a great way to get inspired :)
I love both landscape and drone photography and videography and I am glad to see you doing drone work. I was very impressed with the hand launch at the beginning of the video! Try some compound movements (eg. back and left or down and forward). These will make your already nice shots look richer (IMHO).
Beautiful shot, Sarah! Your drone footage is on point, too. We bought a Mini 3 Pro last year and it’s incredible. I love adding that extra little touch to my videos. You’ll love it! Having the extra slow-mo capabilities and better collision sensors is a game-changer in giving you that extra peace of mind when you want to get a little more adventurous while filming! 😁
Sometimes G.A.S can be beneficial to inspire you. You can jump from digital photography to film photography. You can try DSLR cameras, and switch to point-and-shoot, or Digicams. You Can switch from landscape photography to street photography, to micro photography, drones. All these things can inspire!
I think I've used similar methods to get out of ruts, usually watching videos of someone going about a style of photography I don't usually do. Even if I don't try what they're doing, it can still provide inspiration. For instance, this channel has great long exposure stuff, but I kinda lack the patience to drag a tripod around 🤣 Over the past year, finding vintage lenses and adapting them to my Canon R5 has really been stirring my creative energies. That, and watching the SUV RVing channel to find places out here in the US west to explore and take the camera. Basically, my camera demands road trips and scenery and who am I to argue with it?
That is such a cool idea about finding different lenses!! Inspiration is everywhere even if you don't want to pack a tripod around hehe!!! Thank you so much for watching!
Happy "MONDAY" LOL!! See us old retired people get set in our ways, and when this change we tend to lose track of where our schedule is. Lol Had my coffee yesterday and was on my phone, but it never dawned in me to check for your video. I would love to learn drone flying. The problem is when you only have 10⁰ of peripheral vision following it and not crashing it into trees and having it comeback would be interesting. My luck I would fly it into the back of my head. Lol I don't know if it is my love of the Rockies or what, but your intro seemed to be exceptionally better interest and composition wise. They are ALWAYS GREAT!! This one just gave me goose bumps. Oh, I don't know what the laws for using a camera while driving are in Canada, but here you were being naughty🤣🤣🤣. Lions, tiger's and ...wait ....what? A GRIZZLY????? MOMMY !!!!!! IM OUT!!
How long has your photography revolved around the yellow dress? I have just entered into hobby photography with my wife, and my photos at the beginning, felt very touristy to me. I had been thinking about adding a prop theme myself. We started with a small plastic skeleton, but I have seen that that idea has been done before, so I'm currently exploring some more unique ideas. I'm very pleased to have discovered your channel, although I doubt a yellow dress will ever be my theme. :), but finding a channel based on the very premise I was following in my head, makes me feel that more confident in my idea to get away from the touristy feel of my early photos.

Thank you so much Julie! Appreciate it!
I went there last fall, loved it. Bear country!!
Great work with the drone
Oh yes!!! Big bears in that area!! Thank you so much for watching, I truly appreciate it!
Your drone skills are awesome ! Can’t wait to see pictures with your drone ❤
Thanks girl! Means the world!! :)
Beautiful imagery & so true about getting in a creative rut! I hope to pick up the Mini 3 Pro soon. I like that it is so compact.
Thanks for watching girl! Yea I am going to try and exchange for the PRO! I don't know why I didn't go that route in the first place.

Absolutely gorgeous opening Sarah! I had to watch it several times!
Oh wow! So happy to hear it! I am glad you like! Thank you for watching my friend :)
Great video Sarah, excellent information and advice. It looked like Ollie enjoyed himself as well.
Thank you so much! I am so happy you find my advice helpful! Ollie was having a hoot!

I wonder if the mini 3 pro will go on sale around that time as well.... hmmmmmmm

Hehehehehe! It was my plan all along! It will take a few weeks to adjust with the algo but I think Sunday is better for us all!
@@sarahlyndsay and I wanted to say that the opening drone footage was fantastic. Really loved it and it "inspired" me to pursue getting a drone.

On the mini 3 vs the pro, the collision avoidance on my drone has saved me from many embarrassing moments. Go with the pro if you can
I find bringing my camera with me even when I'm in a rut forces me to look for compositions
Ooooohhh yes, having the camera on hand at all times is def a good idea for making the creative mind work!
For us that are retired, it does not matter when you post. 😊 you can't blame Ollie, it's his nose that gets him in trouble ❤
True!! For the retired folk it’s like Sunday everyday 😂 Ollie is one mischievous boy!!
The yellow dress and beautiful black hair always add to the final photo.
Thank you so much! I think so to my friend :)
Such a beautiful scene, the yellow dress portraits are so inspiring 😊
