When it comes to auto-loaders, the .45 will always be a staple for people who SHOOT their guns. Target ammo still feels like a REAL handgun, but it is a low pressure round, which means less wear and tear on the important parts.
I don't know how that guy is still standing & holding his pistol after being hit that many times at 7 yards---Absolutely amazing. Love you channel. Tks.
Gun Sam. I got my Pennsylvania doe with my 44 mag. Opensights. About 60 yards. I was shooting 240 hard cast lead hand loads. With max charge imr 4227. The bullet hit right front shoulder and came out about 3 inches from its tail left rear quarter. The deer had no blood trail. It was where I shot it. I absolutely love my ruger single actions. Also my security 6. And my 1911. Is .y only handguns. . Call .e old fashioned because I am and very proud to be so. I carry my security 6 357 every day. Like putting on my pants. God bless you 😊😊
I like the wincester white box 240 grn flat point. That's all I shoot when hunting. And where I get my empty brass for reloading. Now hunting with hard cast 240 from Montana bullet works
Good video as always and i like how you compare calibers. Also glad to see you posting again and that hopefully your feeling better! Pray it stays that way for you sir.
I like how you used the actual barrel lengths to compare them . to many people say I have a 4 inch revolver and a 5 in pistol so it’s not a fair comparison when actually it’s more fair.
Yeah, a lot of people don't get it. Even if the semiauto was some special bullpup design to get more barrel travel, overall length of the gun is what really matters in comparison. Like if I had a Glock 19" and wanted the same size handgun in a revolver, it's a 3" revolver. It's just coincidence in a way that revolver VS auto design makes barrel travel the same with a 1" less actual barrel on a revolver vs a semiauto.
Pretty intuitive. In the first series, the .45 ACP ballooned to a huge cross sectional area (.716 diameter), whereas the revolver rounds were narrow in comparison (.539 and .598, respectively). Obviously, you have momentum competing with drag, so MxV/A, where A is the expanded diameter, tells the tale. That's 76% greater than the .357 and 43% greater than the .44. In the second series, the .45 ACP did not expand, and penetrated vastly deeper than in the first test. That's concerning - but it certainly shows that diameter matters where bullet penetration is concerned, and makes a strong case for a pre-filled hollow point bullet, like a Hornady Critical Defense, to ensure expansion. It's very interesting when the first principles agree with the experimental results, like this. Empiricism and theory in accord with one another! Given the capacity of a double-stack 911, those .45 ACP+Ps look like an awesome choice, especially considering the recoil characteristics, reload speed, and initial mag capacity. Add single action trigger over a long-pull DA revolver pull, and it sure seems to be the winner - which is NOT an expected outcome. And there is .45 Super and .460 Rowland waiting in the wings for greater power. Great video.
The 460 has brutal recoil and really is in the magnum class of performance. I've not tried the 45 Super, 450 SMC, of 451 Detonics, but I expect performance and recoil will be relatively high when compared to the 45 +P load. There's no free lunch.
@JamesGmoneyBanks Recoil is very subjective. The Elmer Keith types seem not to notice it much, while the Barney Fife types start flinching before they pull the trigger. I'm somewhere in between, so I'll say I'm average. In my personal experience the standard Government 1911 firing 230 grain GI 45 hardball has acceptable recoil that feels like a rapid push. It is sharper than a 38 Special, but not as sharp as a 357 Magnum. On a felt recoil scale of 1 to 10 with 22LR being a 1 and 44 Magnum being a 10, the 38 rates a 4, the 45 rates a 6, and the 357 rates a 7. Anything 4 and under is pleasant, a 5 or 6 is okay but not punishing (your hand is not sore after 50 rounds of ammo). Anything greater than this causes soreness, fatigue, or induces flinching before you have fired 50 rounds. I find the recoil of the 460 Rowland to be comparable to that of a 4" Model 29 firing heavy loads, very sharp and rapid with a good amount of rise. I will add that my 1911 is actually a 6" long slide with a heavy recoil spring and a compensator on the muzzle. The compensator is necessary to prevent the slide from opening prematurely. By comparison, a friend of mine has a 5" 1911 conversion and he claims the recoil is only slightly greater than a hot-loaded 45 ACP. Is he less sensitive to recoil or is there a problem with premature unlocking with my pistol? I have noticed firing pin drag on the primers and one punctured primer, so on the advice of Underwood Ammunition I switched to a different firing pin. I'm also planning to install a reduced radius firing pin stop. This might extend the unlocking time of the slide. If it does, the slide speed should be reduced and perhaps I will notice a recoil reduction. If not, then I will stick with my original assessment of the 460.
@JamesGmoneyBanks Yes - thanks for the nice comments. The 460 Rowland, though, doesn't need a special gun like the Automag; it's retrofitted onto a 1911 frame. They replace the barrel, recoil spring, and bits and pieces in their kit, and you end up with a 1911 breathing fire. Same cartridge size as a .45 ACP, but way higher pressure, so the cases are rifle cases. The .45 Super is the same - just a heated-up ACP, but best shot with a barrel with more support by the feed ramp area. I have a double-stack RIA I just got that I'm contemplating a Rowland conversion for. Seems to me that if - with a recoil spring change to one of lesser tension - I could shoot .45 ACP, +P, .45 Super, and the Rowland when the Martians arrive, that would be a pretty versatile piece.
Great comparison, as usual, good to see whole videos, coming back, hope your health continues to improve or in fact, has completely stabilized, how are you doing?
Recently got a 32long 3.25” h&r thank you for all your videos on that caliber even though I will likely have to handload it for a semi stable supply of ammo.
@JamesGmoneyBanks 32-20 is a lot closer to 9mm than 32acp though he is correct don’t put rifle ammo in your revolver(I have a colt police positive special in 32-20) 32 long I believe is actually lower pressure than 32acp by about 5,000psi and gives energy numbers somewhere between a 22lr(handgun) and 32acp
Good comparison. 357 looks great overall in performance. But it isn't as intuitive for carry. We have put many pounds of venison in the freezer for a couple decades with 240 XTP out of 44 magnum revolvers & rifles. Great performance.

I have all three calibers. For SD my first choice it the 45ACP its accurate controllable and has great reputation for stopping the threat. My favorite 45 handgun is my USP 45. 357 is great for EDC stoked with TUI it’s a snubby. My 44 is a hunting handgun Colt Anaconda.
If you have ever considered the Garmin Xero chronograph I can highly recommend it. It doesn't care about lighting or weather. It just sits there and works every time. Yes, it is pricey, but I don't regret spending the money.
Good compare and all are good with me, liberty plus p 78 gr will go the advertised velocity in a 4.5 or bigger and produce 600 ft lbs in 45 acp, hugexbullets like 200 gr plus are a force even if slow and if they hit a large bone or even ribs they wreak havoc, those very slow big bullets used in the 1800s caused horrible trauma and you can bet they were molasses slow with crappy black powder most likely wet and contaminated or of unknown quality .Shoot a 180 in a 45 is the same energy as a much more modern high pressure 40 and larger diameter.
I own all three handguns. The.44 magnum is amazing in power but not the most practical for self-defense at least in that load. The .45 is a pretty good choice, but usually you have the extra weight and size of the pistol to deal with. The .357 is best overall.
Hello again. I watch every one of your videos (and favorite all of them.) I find you personable and I enjoy your gel tests. Anyhow I love my .357 magnum. S&W 686 Plus, 7 shot, 7 inch barrel. I've never fired a .45 auto or a .44 magnum. but I do often use Buffalo Bore .357 Heavy load (19L/20) 180 grain hollow points listed at 1500fps and 899 ft/lbs, but out of a seven inch that's well over 900 fps. Do you think that is comparable in recoil to a light 44 magnum? I know it has to be more than a 45 auto. Anyhow, it's amazingly fun. Giant fireball but manageable recoil. I used to own a Mossberg Shockwave and shot 00 Buck out of it, and that was about comparable in flash and perhaps a bit more recoil. Anyhow, it's a real fire-breathing dragon! Hey, keep up the good work!
Thanks. For me, no matter how you slice it up, a 180 gr .357 Mag still seems to have less recoil than maybe a 180 gr .44 Magnum from a similar weight revolver. I think somehow bore size plays a part in felt recoil even though I can't prove it - and yes I tested that exact 180 gr .357 Magnum before. A .45 ACP is like, the muzzle jump of a steel frame .357 Magnum revolver but with the actual hand feeling of a 9mm. It's kind of fun.
@@GunSam I figured the 44mag would have more in spite of the similar bullet weight and velocity out of the barrel. It has to be bullet diameter/bore size. In your test above, the 44 vastly outperforms to the point of overpenetration. I agree that the .357 was the winner alround for that reason.
Within the context of typical blunt-shaped pistol bullets, the faster the speed the higher the drag, and the faster the velocity loss. Relatively speaking, the lower velocities of the "heavy" .45acp is a good combination of maintaining momentum/energy down range, compared to another lightweight caliber. There's nothing magical about that, as the same conditions can be duplicated in any other caliber if you have the cartridge space to do so. People mostly familiar with 9mm world, they live in the ethos of a certain velocity and a certain recoil. When talking about slow and heavy .45acp, eyes roll. Why? They don't know what they don't know.
I learned all that stuff as a rural kid lol. My dad gave me a slingshot in 1987 and he told me, you use rocks and that's how it works. So I shot all sorts of rocks of different size and always knew that the light ones up close shot through cardboard really well, but at range you use the bigger ones. as the light ones won't do anything at all over distance.
I found this out trying to make realistic bullet drop in Far Cry 6 by calculating how much percent of the velocity they lose in a second. And .45 ACP lost barely anything while .50 AE and .44 Magnum lost a crazy amount of velocity
I have used Shooter's Calculator website a hundred times or more. It's easy to get around and generate charts. Super accurate. All you need to know is BC (typically G1), a starting velocity, and if you wish you can plug in your local atmospheric correction values from a decent weather site (altitude, barometric pressure, temp, and humidity). Set your chart column outputs, (MOA, MIL, etc), your chart range (how much distance), and plug in your desired zero range. Works well to find your max point blank range if you know how large your target is going to be.
I grew up burning through slingshot straps myself. Haha! Dairy farm childhood. Shattering acorns against telephone poles, pinging acorns off the top of the silo roof. Flinging rocks. Used a pump BB gun a lot. Used a single-shot Marlin .22lr a lot.
Gun Sam. I also love both the 357 mag,and 44 mag. All ruger super Blackhawk and also a ruger security 6 4" 357 mag. They will also keep the boggy man away.😊
I just sold m .45 cal handguns. If you can, try your exercise with a heavier .357 like the s&w 627 8 shot with a 5” barrel and see if you like it even more. Like other comments about the .44 Mag. It is a great platform.
Someone should create something like .46 Ruger or something like that. Be like a .45 GAP but .46", that was we can mess with people who say there's no .46 lol. One might say there's a .460 Magnum but that's still .45".
My edc is a 45 app it works on hawgs about as well as my .357 does. Bucks no problem if your close but I do prefer a magnum for back up when hunting we got black bears and cougars here so that said
Hornady in my experience is loaded light.. 9mm and .45… some REAL +P .45 caliber rounds get a 230 grain up to 1,000 fps and 185 grain up to 1,100 fps. Then with modern chambers and cases we have the .45 super… that’s probably a more fair comparison.
This is why I carry my .44 mag in the woods. It’s a bit big with the 8 3/8 barrel, but the 300 grain Underwood JHPs are trucking. The box says about 1,300 fps, so if that is true I can only imagine the damage and penetration it will do.
That's 1125.54 ft/lbs so pretty darn good... I can get my 7 inch .357 up to about 900-1000 ft/lbs with high end Buffalo Bore heavy loads, which is comparable to low-end 44mag.
Between the 3. The .357 Magnum is the most of effective. Regardless of the .44 Magnum being the most powerful❗The .45 acp did you change the spring for the ➕P loads❓For .45 to compare with the BIG Boomer's 💥 💥. Test a BFR Colt .45 👏 🤝
great detailed comparisons. thank you. it makes me want to look back for earlier videos of a comparable 40 and how it/they compare. i would feel comfortable with the 40, 45, or 357, but have never shot a 44 magnum. i usually carry a 357 and a 40, but sometimes a 45.
like to see the 45 long colt in this test. I typically carry ball ammo in my 45 but in my 38/357 snubbies its usually 38 plus p. for me this works. but i do not feel bad with the 45 acp. would like to see a snubbie in 45 long colt. does anyone make one? i sometimes carry a 2.75 inch smith 69 in 44 mag but load with 44 special.
If the 45 ACP is good enough for John Browning it's good enough for me. You can't talk me out of it so don't waste your time and breath. Read Greg Ellifritz's research on bullet stopping power, it's a real eye opener...
His study is good overall. You see a lot more real world info as it's not one shot stop. Seems like good stuff like .45 auto, .357 Mag, .44 Mag and so on will just about always work with two shots. The other stuff not so much, at least 3 hits are needed and their failure rates are pretty high on 9mm and similar.
I heard the 45 colt was invented to stop a horse in case you fell off and were getting dragged. Will you please do a stout 45 colt test? As always great vid thumbs up!
Some of their lower end calibers like .32 H&R Magnum, .380 ACP and .38 Special are better than most brands and some of their Critical Duty is good. Other than that, I don't really think their ammo is that good. Overall I think Federal is better.
@@GunSam I like Hornady in .38 special 🤝. The recoil from the .357 Magnum showed a less sharp recoil with 158 gr ammo. Like I can 👀 what you saying about different caliber's. N9ne mm critical duty is also smooth. But the .44 Magnum, didn't disappoint 💯. You know when shooting dirty harry❗
Gun Sam, if you are going to bring out the big boys. Then, you need to bring out the 450 SMC. Then, walk it into the battle arena. That is filled with the awaiting " Big Boys !"
Love your vids bro but when it comes to comparing magnum velocity please make it fair and stuff that 45acp pistol with buffalo bore 45 Super 185 gr hollow point ammo at 1350 fps and 750 ft lbs of muzzle energy the Buffalo bore round competes with the other magnums in the video. 🤟😎👍❤💯
People get on my nerves with so called "myths" stopping power is a myth, over penetrating is a myth. But common sense will tell you a 357 chest shot will stop you b4 a 22lr chest shot. A 44 mag has potential to go thru an attacker vs a 9mm. The over penetrating might be a lesser concern. But to call it a myth is silly
@nicholasroberts9618 so in hunting you think a 223/556 is gonna stop a deer same as 30-06 or even 300 win mag?... There's a reason 5.56 is illegal in most places to hunt with you know. Why in states are you allowed to hunt with 357 mag, but not 9mm?
I want no heat whit no of these rounds ive been hit once whit a 22lr in the arm and it stop me 😊and for all haters no wasent any robery or something illegal just me as a young idiot who did a stupid stupid stunt 🤦i was exstremly lucky
I have been hit with ricochets of .22 and .38's and whatnot. Not even 10% of the energy of actually being shot. Even those ricochets felt like sledgehammers hitting me. It's astonishing how little projectiles can hit so hard.
@@GunSam i know you know way more then me.i always shaken my head when people laugh of the stopping power of a 22lr. I often carry a 22 revolver six shots and i know im pretty safe if a scum trye to rob me. But in a war of course i would not felt safe at all. Or just ownd a 22 in a Apocalypse cenaro. But better have a 22 then nothing at all. And to all 22 haters i guess if someone had a revolver whit six shoots you had raise your hands up and said i give up or you had to be dumb. But i love 45acp for a lot of years still like it but shot more whit 9mm now a day s found my favorite firearm and ammo but 44 is fun to shot but to much for me. I had maybe carryd it in Alaska or Africa nature or in my country Norway way norht where you can meet icebears but they use actaly 308 or their army rifles up there i felt maybe the 357 won all in all to own if you live in a dangerous place or something but im no expert but i like you Chanel and your videos thanks a lot and you right about what you say and write here.
Sam why didn't you test the 10 mm against the 357 and the 44 you should have at least use the 45 super or the 450 SMC but damn a 45 plus p come on man you really piss me off
if you look close, I actually hit the target low left and then the bullet split and hit the ground behind the target, leading me to believe I missed entirely.
Another win for 357 Magnum.

The Glock 30 is bulky for iwb. So I got a G36 it’s the perfect size. 6+1 or 7+1 with a pinky extension.
@JamesGmoneyBanks I do have a rubber hogue grip on it. It's not that bad, really. Startling but not painful.
Thank you for the answer!
Thanks for replying yet again. You're a good guy.
Respect to all calibers but Full Power 158grs 357 Magnum would be my chice. Second choice would be full power 180grs 10mm AUTO.
I think the M 69 would be good with Keith / Skeeter loads 44 sp +P
Another great video! Thanks for sharing! Why 45? Because there isn't a 46!
There's a .475 if you wish.
Someone should create something like .46 Ruger or something like that. Be like a .45 GAP but .46", that was we can mess with people who say there's no .46 lol. One might say there's a .460 Magnum but that's still .45".
@@GunSam From what I can tell, there's a jump between .458 Maximum (.458) and .476 Enfield (.472), but no .46.
.45 Don't Shrink! Heavy Winter Clothing. 357 Underwood 125 Gold Dot vs Critical Duty just went live check it out
The .357 is kinda' like the "Elvis" of the handgun cartridges.
My edc is a 45 app it works on hawgs about as well as my .357 does. Bucks no problem if your close but I do prefer a magnum for back up when hunting we got black bears and cougars here so that said
What are "hawgs" ?

The largest hog taken in my state was 9 feet long and 1100 lbs. It had to be moved with a backhoe.
@@rohawaha🤣🤣
Hornady in my experience is loaded light.. 9mm and .45… some REAL +P .45 caliber rounds get a 230 grain up to 1,000 fps and 185 grain up to 1,100 fps. Then with modern chambers and cases we have the .45 super… that’s probably a more fair comparison.
.357 Magnum! 🏆... Oops - I got excited; it's not suppose to be a competition, lol. 😀
I mostly have fmj 45acp ammo. Looking for a good defense round in +p.
Hornady ammunition always perform under the stated velocity even using 4 inch barrel
Thought about buying an Extar 45acp. Barrel is 6.5 inches
I support your decision!
@@SaintBrianTheGodless those are some good numbers with the .357. How is the recoil with those hotter loads?
I wonder if 357 recoil is any different out of a single action? Do you own a single action revolver?
Not in .357 Magnum
That is a question I'm curious to know the answer about relating to single action revolvers in any caliber.
Hot XTP is always good
A s w governor, 45 colt 45 acp comparison would be cool.
Thank you
👍👍
45 acp the original hand gun bear defense. 45 keeping pace with 357 mag. The difference is in the ear protection. Why 45 wins!
👍😊 is the 225 ftx any better than the 240xtp.
Seriously? No the 45-ACP can't even come close to these Magnums, I've been doing this for 58 years, hell my 8 year old Grandson knows this.
Worried about .44 magnum over-penetration? Well, say hello to .44 special.
I prefer hornady 44 mag 300 gr xtp for woods carry and home defense I live at a farm beside forrest with black bears Bob cats
like to see the 45 long colt in this test.
Missed on the 12th shot .357 Magnum 😂
You should have added 9mmP as well.
I don't have a 'womp womp womp' sound effect through.
Bump
I heard the 45 colt was invented to stop a horse in case you fell off and were getting dragged. Will you please do a stout 45 colt test? As always great vid thumbs up!
PizzA
Do you like Hornady ammo❓
Algorithm
Gun Sam, if you are going to bring out the big boys. Then, you need to bring out the 450 SMC. Then, walk it into the battle arena. That is filled with the awaiting " Big Boys !"
Love your vids bro but when it comes to comparing magnum velocity please make it fair and stuff that 45acp pistol with buffalo bore 45 Super 185 gr hollow point ammo at 1350 fps and 750 ft lbs of muzzle energy the Buffalo bore round competes with the other magnums in the video. 🤟😎👍❤💯
I used typical ammo. Not sure how that's not fair.
Old fat and slow has killed many more then both combined
Mah boi forgot about 10mm!!!
It would be about the same as 357 and lose to the 44 mag.
Stopping power is not a myth 😂🤡
@nicholasroberts9618 so in hunting you think a 223/556 is gonna stop a deer same as 30-06 or even 300 win mag?...
There's a reason 5.56 is illegal in most places to hunt with you know.
Why in states are you allowed to hunt with 357 mag, but not 9mm?
@@drewmoore365 🤡
It depends. A high velocity 180gr hp 44 Mag load will less likely overpenetrate than a fmj 9mm.
@@Gieszkanne I agree. But people say over penetrating itself is a myth

Sam why didn't you test the 10 mm against the 357 and the 44 you should have at least use the 45 super or the 450 SMC but damn a 45 plus p come on man you really piss me off
Why didn't I use a 10mm to compare .45 ACP to .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum? Umm...okay.

if you look close, I actually hit the target low left and then the bullet split and hit the ground behind the target, leading me to believe I missed entirely.
