Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding, Jr., star in James L. Brooks' hit comedy, AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Nicholson gives a show-stopping performance as Melvin Udall, an obsessive-compulsive novelist with Manhattan's meanest mouth. But when his neighbor Simon is hospitalized, Melvin is forced to babysit Simon's dog. And that unexpected act of kindness, along with waitress Carol Connelly, helps put Melvin back in the human race.

Helen's performance was simply outstanding. no wonder she won an Oscar for this.
Yes!
Doesn’t matter if you like “ jack” or not ! He is without a doubt one of the greatest actors ever
I find him unattractive looking but agree he is a brilliant actor!
@Bradley Putnam I absolutely agree with your statement. Jack excels all expectation in every performance.
She was pretty amazing too. They worked well together.
💯
I Agree on that one!
"Is there another way to see it"
Strong closing argument...
“I’m sorry - didn’t I say what? I thought I said what.” - God she’s so good - just the simplest moments elevated. I could watch her take on that line 100 times.
And then she remembers that until she actually does ask "what?" he won't consider the question has even been asked and will be stuck on pause waiting for the question.
Great acting isn't acting, it's living the moment.
She always plays the exact same character. They all talk the same way, make the same faces, use the same timing- she always just plays Helen Hunt. Absolutely no variation performance to performance
That's was the screenwriter who wrote that line....
Helen Hunt is without doubt an exceptional actress, particularly here in this role - she cemented her place amongst Hollywood's top actresses with an exceptionally nuanced and sensitive performance.
Her eyes without saying a single word, just illuminated her feelings and thoughts so poignantly throughout her Oscar-winning performance - Helen is an underrated tour-de-force who stood head and shoulders with Nicholson.
i wanna make out with her
What a lovely piece. Eloquent and quietly put.
A portrait in two verses.
She had to pretend Nicholson was attractive on some level so yes, she deserves her award.
"The vet said he's doing fine" that slipped by me the first time lol.
"Melvin I'd rather not "
"What's that got to do with anything?
One of my favorite movies. He laid everything out there for her.
After Melvin states that Carol go on the trip, the accommodations - separate everything, hotel rooms, and that she's got to chaperone him and Simon - even after all those conditions the only thing she remembers is:
"The stiff one-eye?".
That's what it's like to be in Melvin Udall's world.
It's no wonder she is frightened to ask him:
"What?"
Helen Hunt performs her role impeccably. She really earned her Oscar.
The script for this movie step-by-step builds to this moment.
the stiff one eye line and her response cracks me up every time.
I don't get it. Could you please explane this to a forigner?
@@romanyakovlev7773 a slang term for a male erection.
@@romanyakovlev7773 I assume "stiff one-eye" was a euphemism for an erection, and she thought that was a ridiculous thing for him to say or be worried about.
Nobody mentions it but I love the last bit there
"Are you saying accepting your help obligates me?"
"Is there any other way to see it?"
"... no..."
You can see in that moment, Carol stopped focusing on Melvin's flaws and took a little peek at herself saying, "The fact that you have changed my family's life for the better doesn't obligate me in the least" and she couldn't stand by it. Woman of integrity.
It also speaks a little bit to the nature of Autism. People find that the way Autists think and act is a bit transactional and straightforward, but sometimes an honest transaction is way easier and better than insincere lipservice BSing.
I think in this moment, she thought about Melvin and his flaws and could see the very flawed man before her... one of his flaws is NOT dishonesty. In fact, honesty is probably his most defining flaw... and knowing that Melvin is an INAPPROPRIATELY honest person (from personal experience) actually puts her at ease in a way. She knows that despite the strangeness of the request there's no ulterior motives.
Another sidenote, you'll notice that a lot of the most impactful events in this story are transactions. The doctor, while it made everyone feel warm inside... was a transaction. Caring for the dog... was a transaction. The cross-country trip (for both Melvin and Carol) was a transaction. And you'll notice... the compliment was a transaction.
Carol applied leverage and said she needs a compliment (something that isn't particularly normal to demand) and she got one in return. Under normal circumstances, when you demand a compliment, it tends to invalidate the compliment, but oddly, with a person like Melvin, it accentuates it. Coming from him, you know that a compliment like that has been mulling around in his mind for some time, and he's not even really sugar-coating it. You can tell Melvin is bursting at the seams with these wonderful thoughts about her, but he just doesn't discuss his own feelings. I don't doubt for a moment that when he said, "Perhaps I overshot... I was going for just enough to keep you from leaving" he was being a bit cheeky... but that's probably the truth.
The whole movie is about transactions and compromise and the healing power of doing right by those you owe something to.
The sort of analysis I was looking for after watching this clip.
Helen Hunt is ridiculously great
I watched this one in 5th or 6th grade at school - now I'm 35 and it's still my all-time favorite movie and actor
Why are they showing 5th graders this movie lol
Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson was PERFECT in this AMAZING movie.
I miss her movies...🥰
The stiff one eye gets me every time 😅
Jack played a character with severe rude behavior but yet the most caring one whom he had no idea of.
One of the greatest movies ever. You cannot do great comedies like this anymore.
Why not?
@@matrix101redorblupill4 people get offended far to easy.
@TravelerPat I know. It's sad, it really is.
@@matrix101redorblupill4 he’d be considered too old. And a white old man complex. Creepy guy that sits in her section.

Just love this movie! The acting is so natural….it makes you feel you’re living it!
Jack did that scene 18 times and according to her he did it exactly the same way with the same cadence and gestures. That's amazing acting
So who kept messing it up?
@@baronvonnemblesthe director coughing
OCD.
What I like about this apart from the paper-crinkling ASMR: “awful” people are still capable of incredible acts of kindness, just as the opposite holds true.
Undoubtedly the best performances by both of these super-actors in their entire careers.
Great performances by both for sure. Best? I'd give the nod to Jack's performance in either Cuckoo or A Few Good Men.
An exercise into human behavior , generosity, learning , sharing, caring, living.
@David Skaar • "An exercise into human behavior". It should be written on stone. Thank you.
Helen Hunt had me in this film. Gosh, can't imagine how she did it.
I've read a few times she fought hard for the role, so I'm guessing she had a good game plan on how to tackle it coming in.
She makes me cry. She is so goddamn good that she makes me cry.
Love Helen, she’s simply amazing!
Jack Nicholson - best actor ever. Big statement but I stand by it. So there!
"Is there any other way to see it".
"...... "No".
Love it.
PURE PERFECTION!! in every aspect, script, director, producer and actor, every little nuance a PURE MASTERPIECE!! one of THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE!! about the trials of "The Human Condition"
I would say definitely better then titanic in that year.
This was one of the few movies that made me feel so happy I went to see it, the story, Jack, Helen and Greg such amazing actors… ❤❤❤❤❤ and everytime I catch it on the tv I rewatch it again and again…
3:03 gets me every time. The way she delivers that line: "I'm sorry. The stiff one eye?!"
Wonderful scene, with great performances by both actors. Jack Nicholson doesn’t need to say anything to be brilliant and Helen Hunt is fantastic. She is the part she’s playing. It’s not like acting.
That's what is so amazing about this movie--it's like you're a fly on the wall of these people's everyday lives and not watching one of the best actors gathered together to make this magic happen. That's really why they should have a special Oscar category for best ensembles because sometimes a movie comes together so perfectly because of the entire cast and not just one or two people carrying it. Everyone from the main cast to the background actors who are onscreen for only a few minutes absolutely nails it in this film. I especially loved Harold Ramis (may he RIP) as the endearingly awkward doctor, Lawrence Kasdan as Melvin's rather exasperated psychiatrist, and the kids yelling "Melvin wait!" LOL This film always moves me no matter how many times I watch it and I watch it every time it comes on TV even though I have the DVD. It's just that classic...
This part of the movie is great and true to life. I can help you in the biggest way but for you to help me is to much. The saying " Don't expect much from people and they won't let you down"
So very true... Thought the same. She took hours to write a worthless thank you note but she hesitates to give in return. And a trip! A common occurrence in real life.
Facts learned that more in last 10 year’s then the first 40….. Heartbreaking 💔🥊🤬
Tbf she never asked for Melvin’s help and he was off his meds.
Love Jack's shirt in this scene.
How could anyone not thouroughly enjoy every second of this masterpiece?
I know right!
My brother recommended this movie to me by saying: "the dog is hilarious"...
Another of my all time favorite movies, along with “Hidden Figures.” Nickelson and Hunt were both superb. Greg Kinnear impressed me also. He’s underrated as an actor.
A movie that puts a light on the struggles of many. There are so many movies that have opened my eyes that I have a lot to learn about life!
This is one of the best movies ("Guess who is coming to dinner" another) where excellent acting meets excellent script writing/dialogue....
Ah, yes, the old stiff one eye!!! 🤣🤣🤣
The face of Jack is very funny, his performance Is fantastic, and Hellen is great.
An immortal cinematic masterpiece.
I wanna find the clip where her mom tells her to please take the help from him
I thought it deserved a better ending tbh
@@trevscribbles How did you want it to end? I thought it was perfect, wrapped the film up neatly, and even left an opening for a sequel that seemed to be in the works but ultimately didn't really need to happen. You can just imagine the rest of it with a smile...
What a wonderful movie! Clips from this winner are a worthwhile treat!
Nicholson 👏👏👏👏
Been years think I’ll watch again.
Stiff one eye!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is heartwarming.
This is such a brilliant, funny, intelligent film, with suberbe actors throughout... Regards from Ireland 🇮🇪
This scene is genius in that you sympathize with both positions. On the one hand what he did for her was monumental & it isn't too much to ask when he needed something. On the other hand it's offensive when someone does something for you & EXPECTS reciprocation which nullifies the act as now you're essentially paying for it.
I have an aunt that is always putting her nose into everyones business, in a good way doing for everyone else, but not asked for. Then when she needs something, she assumes you're on board with what she wants done without even asking, just assumes because, what I did for you.
Yep, a covert contract.
I dont think he did the favor to put her on the hook, He did it to get her back to work, Then the problem came up.
I don’t see anything wrong with doing a favor for someone and expecting something in return. Especially if you do a giant favor for someone and only want something small in return. It’s good to help people, but you’re a person too and it’s just as good to help yourself as it is to help someone else.
@@Justheory11b exactly from a covert narcissist ✍🏻

One of the top 10 movies of all time in my view. Fantastic main actors.
As good as it gets; yes.
This is what you get with a great original script and great actors
Omg shes totally ME when writing a letter. Cant be a simple 1 pager! Lol! Gotta be a mini book!!!!
Yes go on the trip. Poor guy and the stift one eye 😅 hes needs saving 😅😂
Both great actors
maybe I’ve seen the movie too many times, but Jack Nicholson just looks like a Melvin to me…
So true. You know it's Jack but he becomes Melvin.
What a surprising and wonderful movie.
Jack exuberates style and conviction so effortlessly.
What a wonderful movie!
Man I just relate to her a lot.
Stiff one eye 😂
Two amazing actors and a wonderful film.
Brilliant brilliant BRILLIANT‼️
Such a good movie.
This was a really great movie. Kevin ? Or whoever it was playing the gay neighbor really deserved the Oscar the most - he was fantastic. But yeah Jack was great as usual and his Oscar was well-deserved as well.
Solo cuando hay grandes actores se puede hacer una escena así. Fantástico.
This Guy is simply off the charts

Haha she jumped to conclusions twice
This character is spot on: He needs help and she won't give it.
Pure function as represented by the male character and pure passion as represented by the female character.
I gotta watch this film again.. briiliant
I'm afraid he's going to pull the stiff one eye on me. No way!

Helen Hunt 😍
The best movie ever.
Is there any other way to see it? Such great writing in this movie.
i dont even know how old this movie is but it doesn't matter. I lost count how many times I've watched it but that's not important. This movie though is still one the most watchable, well acted movies ever. It has so many "moments" in it, moments that are portrayed with such skill, such precision,.......moments that are right there in front of us every day and we are just too blind to see or too busy to care. It is a cinematic masterpiece. The casting director should have won an award because every single person in this film totally nailed it. Totally!! The ttile of the movie actually sums it up perfectly................as movie making goes this is As Good As It Gets.
Every time I click on a scene from this movie I'm crying with laughter 😂😅
This movie and good will hunting came out the same year as titanic.
All got nominated for the best picture Oscar
Melvin is basically Adrian Monk mixed with Archie Bunker 😂

Call me crazy but I could definitely see Bill Murray also playing Jack's role here.

I always wondered if Jack Nicholson was acting in this role or just being himself...
A bit of both lol
I believe in a Heaven. If God has been paying attention, Jack Nicholson has to be going there. Even heaven needs a little devil with the greatest eyebrows ever showing us how to enjoy what God has made. Love ya Jesus!

Is this scene an indictment of the American Health Care system and the love of money ? Great scene though. Taking nothing away from the performances
Yeah, the kid would have died anywhere else. Please go to Cuba for your health care.
@@Sanwizard1 He also would have died without a "magic" benefactor. Many of those around in your dream world? Didn't think so.

This scene plays out like Shakespeare if you ask me.
helen hunt / twister was the first dvd ever released...isnt that crazy?
I just looked up the movie info and was shocked to realize how long ago it was released.
Jack is Jack. Helen Hunt personifies vulnerability and compassion. Melvin is a writer and an incurable egotist, he can barely tolerate true thanks, clumsily written, but from the heart.
Both deservant oscars.
