To get a better idea, you really need to listen to their entire catalog if possible. I can’t imagine which direction and style they will be embracing next, after the caliber of tunes on their latest album. Audacity, ABC, Playing God, Chimera are my favs and are just really good and reflect a refreshing unique approach and style of making music. Those young men are are blazing a new trail in modern music IMO.
They do "trap like" drums on purpose in all of their tracks as they're highly influenced and listen to a lot of hip-hop, but they're also from a metal background so they mix genres and make this kind of prog-math-rock, whatever that means. But they are all highly talented/virtuoso and blend multiple genres from one song to another. Definitely worth reacting to.. not many instrumental bands have as big of a following as these guys do!
Definitely check out more Polyphia. They've stepped in and out of so many styles, worth taking a gander through their discography and getting a taste of it all.
With the bass/808 question you had, they often use both an 808 along with Clay G's bass to either mirror each other or work together in some way. It's extremely cool, never seen another band do that
Their drummer (Clay Aeschliman) does all of the beats you hear. He is incredibly talented and my favorite member. He is always doing trap drums in their songs. If you look up his name you can see his drum playthrough of this song and others, definitely recommend it.
Your intuitions are exactly correct! The members of Polyphia love hip-hop, and draw greatly from its influence on them in how they compose their music. They essentially want their guitar to be their rapper. Yes, they add 808's, etc. in post, and a lot of the mixing is done by Tim Henson (neck tattoo guy) himself. On his channel, he even posted videos explaining his writing and mixing process. For example, one of their hits, "G.O.A.T.", started with him transceibing "Breakfast" by Jaden Smith, and how he went about doing the rest. Another, "O.D.", started with Kanye West's "Champions", but with the structure of a Taylor Swift song he otherwise despises. Great stuff from them. Their most recent (and arguably biggest) hits are "Playing God", then "Ego Death". "G.O.A.T.", and "'O.D." are older but in the same vein. Then they have other popular tracks which are much less metal; more poppy. Happy listening!
Yeah dude Polyphia writes music electronically then transpose it to instruments. It's fire 🔥! They all are super talented. Being a musician I love the intricate stuff. Check out the stuff without features but one of my faves with a feature is bloodbath with Chino from Deftones.
Polyphia, led by Tim Henson, is a band that is very unorthodox in their approach to making a song, yet their skill is something extraordinary. Tim likes to start out by producing a back track (usually hip hop infused as thats usually his favorite kind of music to write to) to use as a baseline and then he and Clay Aeschliman (drummer) along with the other two Scott LePage (other guitarist) and Clay Gober (Bassist) riff off of one another until they find something they can fit in with. So what you're hearing there is actually both an 808 mastered around Clay G. and Clay A s play. You'll see in a lot of their stuff individual segments meant to show off each of their skills which is really beautiful how they're able to not only show that musically but also produce amazing visual videos to show you it as well. I highly suggest you go back and look at their catalog because if you liked this, I can guarantee you'll love a lot of their other stuff. A lot of what they do is hip-hop infused and mostly instrumentals. If I had to give you specific suggestions based on what I think you'd like, I would choose "G.O.A.T." as well as "Nasty ft. Jason Richardson", "O.D.", and finally, the beautiful Latin flair they have in the song "Playing God" is unmatched. Hope you find them well!
This is exakt how my first listen went LMFAO they found a perfect blend between hip hop and metal for this. I usually heavily dislike when those two genres mix bc it doesn’t sound like it goes together but they nailed it. Hip hop is a huge influence to their music. And yeah, you were hearing 808’s but it’s also the bass guitar. Even those hi hats were the drummer doing everything
Ego death, GOAT, playing god are all great choices. Also Classical Dragon by Marcin and Tim will make everyone give up on playing guitar after seeing the two of them together

As I’ve commented on a laughably large number of Polyphia videos, no that is in fact not an 808. That’s just Clay. Some stuff added for post production but… just check them out live. You’ll get it.
There is stuff added to the drumming, but not as much as you might think. He has drumming playthroughs of a few of their songs, you should watch one of them. He’s a freakin human drum machine on the drums!
Polyphia musics are : "Smooth on the ears, but a pain to perfect" - Were they smooth on the ears because they were pain to perfect ? or - Were they pain to perfect because they were smooth on the ears ?
Definitely react to playing god if you want to see their skill but i'd also recommend ABC featuring sophia black for a more jpop sound I think you'd appreciate that one
The drummer does play through videos for most of the tracks like holland had a lot of collaboration with him on the sound but they don’t add any drums or high hats.
Man i was just thinking to myself the other day. I wonder if hes every gonna check out polyphia - they are INSANE musicians, another ariana grande type track with vocals called "ABC" but you should also check out their pure stuff like, GOAT, Playing god and Ego Death The main guitarist Tim Henson also featured on a track called "Classical Dragon" that shit is ABSOLUTELY INSANE
and don't listen to anyone on what song to listen too next, forget the last 2 albums, focus on the "most hated" EP that is where this whole new thing started.
Playing God will give you a much clearer idea of what Polyphia does.
One of my favorites by them
Agreed! It's kind of wild that the first Polyphia song he heard has lyrics (they only have like 5 tracks with words lol)
I Disagree tbh playing god does not feel as prog rock as they usually do with most of their songs
Even playing god is a bit different cause usually they don't use the nylons

Ego death, playing god, goat
Backwards order

Glad you are checking out Polyphia now. One of my favorite bands!
YES. Polyphia is a math rock wormhole of delight! Hint: Don't use the drums for timing like we do for 99% songs - it's a TRAP
Definitely check out more Polyphia. They've stepped in and out of so many styles, worth taking a gander through their discography and getting a taste of it all.
The playthrough video they do gives you an even better representation of the guitar work as well.

Yeah, they use the drums and bass to mimic an 808 sound. Very cool of you to notice 👍🏽
omg ive been wanting this cross over for so long

The 808s are coming from an kit on the electric pad for the drums.

These guys got plenty of good tracks to choose from, with any type of vibe.
As someone who loves polyphia the face at 1:10 made me so happy
Bloodbath with Chino Moreno (Deftones) is amazing
Polyphia musics are : "Smooth on the ears, but a pain to perfect"
- Were they smooth on the ears because they were pain to perfect ?
or

They use a bass. Just nicely tuned up.

No they actually have 808s but they complement it witch drop D tuning on guitar
The funny thing is, this isn't even one of their big songs. Playing God, GOAT, and Ego Death are some amazing songs!
Definitely react to playing god if you want to see their skill but i'd also recommend ABC featuring sophia black for a more jpop sound I think you'd appreciate that one
