Instead of sharing your manufacturers, share how you find manufacturers. Teach them the process of doing the research and they can find their own. That is what I’m doing going forward. Our manus are great for us, but may not be for the other person. It’s a personal process to find who’s right for you. I also don’t want to be referring makers to manus who drop my name and then become difficult clients to those manus. 😂😂 We need to maintain positive relations with all the people. ❤️
A great piece of advice I would give is to make sure your scan-type files of artwork are uploaded online at 72dpi (you can change it in photoshop) this makes it almost impossible for someone to print your art
As a small business with limited resources, even the tiniest mistakes will leave a mark! Thank you for telling your experiences to the folks out there so they won't repeat the same mishaps when they try a business of their own.

I’ve made tons of expensive mistakes and had countless struggles. There’s all this pressure to “just start” but that’s a huge risk actually and although I think it’s important not to overthink things, it’s very easy to fall flat on your face. My biggest thing is being unable to properly network because of imposter syndrome. It’s hard to go go

Oh Etsy. In regards to the comment about not being too nice, I learnt this very very quickly. I used to sell clay miniatures and charms and in the half a year I was on Etsy, I had around 4 people try and scam me out of getting more products for free or for refunds and Etsy always takes the side of the buyer no matter how hard you fight.
Essentially what these people would do would claim their tracked package arrived empty or didn't arrive at all (despite the fact tracking said it had been). They would then ask me for a refund and I had a policy where I would send another one as opposed to a refund if the product isn't damaged. I would send a new one out and they would claim the same thing happened again and then demanded a refund from Etsy and Etsy would forcefully take a refund and wouldn't listen or even consider the tracking info and hours I spent on the phone with the delivery companies as proof or the photos the delivery companies sent me of the parcel outside the doorstep, clearly not empty or opened. Etsy claimed that the driver could have opened it after the image was taken or the parcel could have been stolen and that was my fault according to Etsy support. I lost out on around £500 because of issues like that
For me the hardest part is the social networking. It seems that so many artists are already part of a group and I can't figure out where to fit in or how to approach trying. So much of the time there are these strong feelings of isolation.
The easiest way to social network with other artists is to meet them at conventions or tradeshows. I have done a lot over the years and met all my artist friends that way. You can try talking to the people on either side of your table during the show. You can also walk around and talk to people about their art, compliment their work and talk about yours. If you go to several shows, it is likely you will start seeing familiar faces so the connections become stronger. Majority of artists are very eager to talk about their work. You will meet those who prefer to keep to themselves, but don't let that discourage you.
@@Momoyue I did a bit of this before covid but then when covid hit I changed the art I was doing. It has been hard to meet artists in my own niche and I will end up doing shows again hopefully next year. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I'm building my own website, I"ve been with ETSY since 2008, but due to their customer service labyrinth, I've decided I need to move forward. Plus I'm uncomfortable leaning on just one selling avenue. I can relate to the balance between being kind but firm, it's hard but a discussion that I hope you will bring up again in one of your vlogs. Take care, SU And it's okay to have boundaries about your business resources you did the homework to find them, what you can share is how much time you invested over the years finding manufacturers or doing shows where you paid a fee to meet manufacturing reps.

I will say (so sorry this is so long) that I have not shared my artwork because of the fear of theft of my character/artwork. That makes no sense, I’m not doing what I love as a career (I’m an idiot). As far as sharing specifics of manufacturers etc, I think rather than sharing specific manufactures so that you don’t scramble for supplies, it would be helpful just to share how to find A manufacturer. Where to look, what to look for, what not to choose and why. That way information is still being shared; and, helping others that are just starting out. Knowing what to look for, possible options, what to steer clear from etc. I’ve always appreciated your candidness, honesty and encouragement. I hope to someday say “Catherine look what you helped make a reality!”” Because we’re here not just to do what we do, but to help others along the way. And you are such an inspiration to other artists. Love your work & look forward to more of your creative journey ☺️. Again so sorry I rattled on 😆.

Thank you for the video 🥲 I started my small business a year and half ago. It took off and sales went up way more than I thought it would, and I wasn’t ready!
After managing all the orders, I had a horrible burnout for 6 months, didn’t come out with any of new products. I felt horrible when looking at other creators in similar business being consistent, but I’m learning how not to compare myself. I’m slowly coming back again and this time I think I know what I can do better to not experience the burnout!!
I hope you manage to recover and find your spark again, take care of yourself, theres no point having a booming business, if you can't enjoy it or love what you do, thats why you did it in the first place 🌸 be kind to yourself, YOU GOT THIS!
Love this so much 💖 starting off I would also share where I got all my supplies cuz I wanted to help others but at some point I had to know when to stop. While I would love to help everyone, it just got so repetitive because someone new will always be asking for my manufacturer’s whenever I posted my products. Like can’t they just appreciate my art post 🥲 lol

I'm trying to start my own business and what I would find more helpful (if you want to share) rather than telling us specific manufacturers and suppliers is HOW you find manufacturers and suppliers and how you test them. I don't know where to start really. I really appreciate all of the knowledge you share with us regardless. Thank you so much!
Edit: it's not a controversial opinion at all and I think it goes back to where you said about being too nice. At the end of the day, you're running a business and if you have identified something that has hindered your busines then you should definitely do what is necessary to mitigate that harm.

I think you’re right about keeping your sources close. Part of the journey of a small business is putting in the work to finding manufacturers, suppliers, etc. Of course, it’s nice to share that w your close ones, but maybe not on a large scale. I starting following you when I was looking for office inspo, and never once expected you to share your business secrets lol I think anyone who genuinely wants to create their own business will understand that and put in their own work by doing the proper research.
The biggest chance to get replicated and have designs stolen and been sold on Alibaba,Aliexpress,taobao etc. Is to use a Chinese manufacturer. In China there is no such thing as copyrights or piracy. The company that produces your products owns the designs by Chinese standards and re-sells them to make more money. Changing the design just so little to be able to claim it as their own. The problem is not the third party sellers, but the manufacturer you have been using. Support local is the only way to get justice and have full copyrights. Might not be as cheap but is it worthy of the risk that Chinese business are? No.
Yes, but manufacturing locally is not possible for many products, since many things (like enamel pins) are not made here (US), but made in China.
There are go-between companies based in the US (and elsewhere), that make it easier for an enamel pin designer to have their pins manufactured.
There are some that have been around for quite a few years and have a good reputation of customer service, and they state in articles on their website, blog, etc. what to expect (such as all pins you order may not be “A” grade, etc.), and what they will help you with and to what extent, if there are problems with your order through them.
It is very sad that designs are stolen and sold (I’ve read articles / blogs by pin designers who have had their designs stolen and sold on Alibaba, etc. and they went through hoops to get the stolen listing taken down.
Others who found their art being stolen and sold on T-shirts, etc, were not so lucky.
Of course, many, many people do artwork of characters found in films, video games etc., and copy it exactly, or with slight changes or in their style, and call it, “Fan Art”, but if you can tell what it is, and sell it, it is no longer fan art, but stolen IP (Intellectual Property).
In fact, I have to laugh when I see “Fan Art” sold on T-shirts, enamel pins, mugs, prints, etc., and the artist then states in print or places a copyright symbol next to it (and it is not registered with a US Copyright), that no one is allowed to reproduce their artwork. LOL
So they are making money selling their version of a stolen character, etc. on merchandise, but are mad if someone else steals their artwork that that stole, and sells it as their own product.
Yes I agree with the manufacturing not sharing with everyone because it can get overwhelming and then it boots your own self out of things. I usually guide people to the way they can look for a manufacture when they ask me things about manufactures. You should never feel like your less as a creative. I feel like you are right there so professionally and have come such a long way with your products, your products are gorgeous they truly belong in stores like target an your stickers need to be at Michael’s craft store. I can’t believe you don’t have a license deal for some of your characters you’re absolutely so cute . Like I said before many times as I have left comments that you are truly my inspiration at the time, I wanted to give up trying to get my stuff out there on products I found your channel and a bell went off in my head make your own products stop waiting for someone to allow me to place on illustration on their product, ever since then I’ve been watching you grow and watching you create new characters your truly an inspiration to me when I get slack I turn on your videos and I get all into being creative again. Thanks for bringing your dreams to reality and sharing it with us🤗❤️

Such great points you have made here. I too have had a recent encounter with Etsy and their strong arm policies. I have been working on getting my store set up on my Website ever since. I have a large FB following, so very soon I will just be promoting my own site exclusively on my page. One of my mistakes is in my creativeness is to spread myself too thin. I think a design will be popular but then I spend all this time creating a series of art that just for whatever reason doesn't sell. I need to figure you how better to determine what it is I need to focus my time on as an illustrator. Maybe you could address that with you own experience in a future vlog.

I think it’s smart to not share your manufacturers and suppliers etc… & I say this as someone who is very curious about the companies people use 😁.
I think this goes along with the issue of being too nice (I struggle with this too)… please remember that you are NOT obligated to share everything about your business with us or anyone *ESPECIALLY* when doing so can hurt your business and/or yourself. Sharing the companies you use can and will cause them to get more business which will in turn result in them not having as much time to dedicate to working on your items, it will cause supply issues (especially amidst the supply shortages nowadays) AND as they grow they’ll likely raise their costs which is also not good for you.
It’s okay to put yourself and your business first, in fact you SHOULD do that.
You don’t have ANYTHING to apologize for. Or if you do, it’s for becoming…SUCCESSFUL. 🎉🍾🎉🥳 you have blazed a trail and been good enough, kind enough to leave bread crumbs for some of us to follow. 💕

My biggest mistake was not taking care of my health, and knowing my boundaries.... not being able to be consistent like other crocheters because of burnout.

Kat in mi opinion, share manufactures is not a problem. You always was transparent, kind and sweet to share your expirence as business owner, an artist and entrepreneur person. Thank you, Katherine. You are so generous; please don't apologize! I agree with your advice of not being too nice - unfortunately, from my own experience, way too often, it get's mistaken with being naive - and you should definitely speak up strictly.
I recently had someone pull an image off of my instagram account and print it for cards. I could not imagine that the quality of the image would do. I try to include my logo when I share now or my design on a product or a mock-up versus the illustration on its own. I considered watermarking my images, but am worried about the impact on the aesthetics of my social media or website. I am not sure how to go about it. Thanks, again, Katherine, for all that you do.
Thanks so much for these tips! Especially with telling everyone about what you use for shipping or any special items needed to run your business or make your products! One thing I'm learning is that I don't have to share every aspect of how I make or do my art. Even though I offer 1:1 classes, I don't have to share everything I do because that's my secret sauce.

I like to go to a persons business website, thinking I am going to get a better deal or extras like free shipping or a point membership. Plus, you get better customer service or better packaging.

Thank you for the advice! I've had an Etsy shop since 2009, and I am so unmotivated to do anything with it anymore--its been on vacation longer than its been open in the past couple of years. I don't have a following to have a website, but I've been doing in-person sales, so having a website might be a great idea. I have one, I just never developed it...I also feel like everyone does so much better than me--has cuter stuff, does better and has more of a following! :( I'm changing up a few things, so maybe I won't feel that way and get my stuff out there!

well that explains the bumble butt issues. its crazy but its not really etsys fault but manufacturing companies stealing your products is a huge issues.
The only thing was how long it took to resolve with etsy! Luckily we managed to resolve it after 3 weeks! Phewph

I completely agree with not sharing your manufacturers and suppliers - it's important for people to realise how much time, effort and money goes into finding suppliers and manufacturers that are right for you, your products and how you want to run your business. And the same for what printer, paper etc. There is so much to be gained from understanding what works for you and just trying. It's similar to "wow that's a great photo, what camera do you have?" - at the beginning, without taking the time to practice and know what goes into that photo, the camera means very little. You're always a huge inspiration :) xx
Thanks for sharing! As someone with a small shop I recently created my own website and unfortunately I got very very little traffic. Instagram wouldn’t approve my shop so I feel as if I’m forced to continue using Etsy. Maybe if my shop grows I can go back to selling on my website, but the website fees currently are not worth keeping it running 😞

I think its still good to share information when you are one on one with peers but to be careful online now you have so many subscribers that can overwhelm the supplier or as you don't know them personally perhaps have underhand motives for trying to copy your designs

So many helpful tips! I agree about not sharing specific manu names ~ I prefer to try to help with HOW to pick a manu rather than just flat out saying who I use… also, every manu is different and not a good fit for every business ~ it’s really in their own best interests to find the one that is good for themselves rather than just using the same one you use? Just a thought….!
I also struggle with imposter syndrome and comparing myself - I think you’re right that it happens most when I’m tired or stress and burnout. My best tip for fighting burnout is to find the thing that recharges your soul! For me, that’s spending time in nature but it can be anything really. 🌸😊
I totally agree! What works for me might not work for everyone else plus I would hate to reccomend a manufacturer and then something go wrong, hehe also we must bethe same cause nature refuels me too hehe

I use ko-fi as my shop. I haven’t gotten any sales since I started but I have a full time job on top of art stuff so it’s very hard to find time and mental energy to do any marketing etc.

When I see the same people spamming your comment section asking for your suppliers and similar things, I always try to explain that they should search locally to find the best ones for *them* and not depend on suppliers from other people. It's not one size fits all and while your suppliers may be the best for you, they more than likely wouldn't work for a lot of other people.
Most of them come to an understanding, but the ones who get mad and start spewing stuff about gatekeeping tend to get a side-eye from me, because the only reason (in my opinion) they'd be fighting that hard to find your suppliers is to try and replicate your brand... which I've also found and put a stop to on occasion. (I've left comments on TikTok about some Insta accounts I've found and gotten taken down on your behalf.)

I think it’s a wide brush you’re using by side eying anyone having an issue with gatekeeping suppliers.

I always offer alternatives on where they can start looking if Kat does not directly list a supplier that's asked for, even gone as far as finding some for people if they're willing to provide just a smidge of locational related information to help them if they ask, because we can still help each other without ending up in a sticky supplier situation like Kat explained in this video.
There is a clear difference between the ones who genuinely need help getting started and those who are attempting to recreate her brand in some capacity/don't want to do the work themselves in researching/or a combination of both after only a few replies. Some don't even try to hide it, while others do so little as to change Katnipp to Catnipp and call it an original concept. There may be a few anomalies that appear on a case-by-case basis, but I've been in the craft/trade world since 2016 and those are few and far between. TikTok has been the worst culprit for breeding these types of people because of how fast the world moves on there with almost zero accountability.

Ever since the pandemic a lot of places have been running out of stuff I don’t think it was just cause you told people about it everyone was having shortages cause the warehouses were. Only small business mistakes I have made is trusting people you think are friends and then they don’t pay you for your time and not buying in bulk but I don’t make enough sales to buy in bulk it’s a loose loose really
The problem with your videos, is that I always hang around until the VERY END to watch your quirky outro (which I love), then I struggle to pause the video in time so I can comment 😂 I gotta remember to comment earlier 😊

On the watermarking tip - I want to watermark my images but silly me is afraid of ruining how nice my photo looks. If I put it in the corner, it could be cropped out. Where are you putting yours??
I think the same thing :') Thats why I never photomarked mine but now I wish I did hahah I still havent figured out how though!

I am actually curious about the part, where you have to prove Etsy that the product is yours! It sounds kinda crazy. Can anyone give any tips on what you should have, or do to prove the product is yours? Like I have no idea how to prove it. With my saved art on iPad? with Instagram post? With invoice from my manufacturer? Like what the heck? Is there anything crucial I should save, keep hold off? In case I will have to prove my products are mine?
Yes, there is a way that SHOULD be honored by etsy.
You need to officially register your copyright with your country's Copyright Office.
The great difference between just creating something, and it being "automatically copyrighted" as people seem to like to term it, (or even putting the copyright symbol, your name and year next to it), will not mean much of anything unless you officially register your artwork and/or product with art on it (like a enamel pin design or stationary, drink-ware, etc.), with the US Copyright Office (if you are in US), because you will then have the artwork, design, product, etc., registration officially recorded with the date at the US Copyright Office, and you can then also use that to go after damages (your monetary losses due to others stealing and selling your designs).

Nothing wrong at all with naming suppliers etc, it's understandable when it comes to then not being able to get the items you need to make stuff. I'm not a business it's a hobby where I sell a few bits and since COVID there was a huge uptake in people doing crafts but also selling them and the place I get my coasters etc from kept selling out so I then had to pay more for them elsewhere till my supplier had more stock. It's something that can not be helped as much but not naming suppliers does I assume lessen the risk

The only downside to having an own website instead of etsy is that you are hurting your international buyers (like me). Big fees due to duties etc will probably result in me not being able to buy anymore, but i will still support you here on youtube (and im going to be a patreon soon!!)

As an international buyer, you will have to pay duties anyway, whether the taxes (like VAT, GST, etc.) for the purchase are paid for at the time of sale, or collected by your Customs or Post Office, etc, when it is delivered, the taxes still must be paid.
I agree on the part you have to be careful with sharing your supplier. You have probably put a lot of time into researching the best one and had to learn it the hard way yourself. Giving away the name makes it a lot easier for the next person (and for free!). Usually this kind of knowledge is what makes you stand out as a business from the rest, so keeping it a secret is completely valid. Keeping it to yourself is actually something that is a standard practice in bigger businesses and there are even extra contracts and lawsuits made to protect the companies ‘secrets’. This all just to protect yourself as a business. So please do, unless it profits you!
actually, I have to disagree. I think Katherine made a valid point about that and I don't think anyone is obligued to share their manufacturer BUT we as small business owners can prevent other likeminded people from losing so much money, nerves and stress from just giving tips. We would have appreciated it when starting out, too. I think (sry if this sounds mean) that this is extremely selfish and irrational.

I have been hearing that Pinterest is the way to go in regards to promoting your business. I’m actually doing the research right now here on RUclips to get on that bandwagon. Not just as a business owner that sells products but also as a freelancer that can help other businesses.
Pinterest is easy to game. Extremely easy to game. Which means a lot of people game it. Which makes it harder to be noticed. It's definitely worth doing, purely because of how easy it is to do, but dony rely on it.
Yes both RUclips and Pinterest require a lot of work, but content can be found years down the road and benefit you still, unlike other platforms that have your content fade off after an hour… I need to step my Pinterest game up tbh.
Pinterest has made it harder to game it...recently read on some things that they are changing, so be aware of that!
