Simple Lighting For A Garage Studio

- We receive lots of comments and emails from photographers, as well as hear from them on workshops, that they don’t have a ‘proper’ studio and have converted their garage into a studio, and would like to know what lighting set ups they can use with limited space. For this tutorial, we used Peter’s movable walls to create a space in the studio the size of the average garage and moved RaRa around showing you how you can light a garage studio!

Can process RAWs through this program with any camera on a Mac, but you will not be able to tether or use certain sliders. Alternatively, he recommends CaptureOne (not Lightroom)

Crazy. I've been in my new apartment one week. I'm up in the middle of the night. And I literally just opened up my tripod and stuck one corner of my tripod into the furthest corner of my dining room to start to sort out my photography setup. And I open RUclips and this video is up. Awesome.

Loved watching RaRa use her shoulders to give great shapes. Loved Peter’s use of lighting as always. The mention of the strong diagonal chin shadow being rather historical was one of those “oh ya” moments. Should have known that, but not consciously, maybe not at all. So, thanks again, all three of you. Love this channel.

Oh, the digital age. I used my living area that had a vaulted ceiling. I placed hooks to where I could use a pipe and put rolls of paper on them to pull down and have the background. Not only that, I could switch from Black to White or even Blue paper backgrounds that I had. Then I placed the lighting off to the side and behind the camera was a set of windows for natural light if needed. There was no digital photography back then, so I had to shoot rolls and rolls of 35 mm pictures. I had to manually set the camera F-stop and hope it was right for the look I wanted. After developing the pictures and looking at my notes to what the settings were when I took the shot, was I able to get the right picture I wanted. Loved the shoot and information on smaller areas. Brings back good memories.

From the car park shoot to the home garage... in my case I’d have to move a small car, lawn mower and a few of kayaks to get a light stand in. But what you always bring is that calm, eyes open way of dealing with what you have to work with. And looking for pictures as they happen vs what you think you need.

Hi, interesting presentation of the possibilities in such a space. Gave me some ideas of what i might try out. Although a space where i might get hold of wold be like 3m x 5m (maybe move some furniture to get to 3m x 7m). Not so cool as Your garage though...

Also, camera gear is a very personal choice. It's like saying why do you drive a BMW and not a Mercedes? the best thing you should do is take other brands out for test drives and work out which camera, lens set up works best for your look.

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Agreed 👍🏻 I’m using the Nikon D850 at present for portraits, weddings and landscapes. I also have a 500CM and a M3 but those in a totally different ball park. I would like to have something with body image stabilization that offers the best in optics and works really well in studio and with mixing strobes and ambient light and with superb dynamic range and simplicity of use. Can you make a suggestion? Also, any chance you will do a workshop in Toronto or Milan ?
I'm loving the Leica SL2 it has my feel about it, Milan next year sorry

@Peter: The photography (5.27) with black and white (50% - 50%) as background is amazing, I think I have never seen anything like this in this channel. In some way, this idea can also be applied in outdoors, agains 2 walls (corner) for example, where one of them is directly lighted by the sun, and the other one shaded . I am aware this was not the purpose of the session, but it just came to my head.

@Rara: I always wanted to know what comes to your head when you look at the camera, with those serene eyes. My thinking is that you know how to leave the problems far away.

Love this.. I prefer to bounce light to get that beautiful clean soft light. Totally not into the straight-on flash although sometimes it works for me. Still enjoy to see your work. Thanks for posting

6x6 m is 19.5'x19.5. my 2 car is 24x20 so close enough! i just have it jammed full of 'non-photography' gear... its just under 12' tall so it would be fabulous but too much stuff...
camera clubs hate this kind of lighting. a PERFECT REASON to use it then! camera clubs seem to be pretty pretentious and ive NEVER joined one after talking to them for about 12 seconds

Peter I know you mean well but most garage in Europe. In cities and towns have room for 1 car. Most homes have a garage with room for 1 car. I have lived in 5 different homes and they all had a garage with room for 1 car. They usually are like 1.5 car in length (not width). Where the other 0.5 car length is used for storage and the washing machines and a freezer.
It's rich people that got a garage with room for multiple cars.

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Well you live in the massive country with tons of open space Australia. I guess we can expect you to make videos about Australian sized things 🙂. In Australia the population density is 3.3 per KM2. In Europe it's between 100ish and 400ish per KM2.

@@trancer03 Its a standard 2 car garage, we are making another video for the people that didn't watch how much space I actually used, every set up I did could've been done in half the space but would be a lot harder to create a video showing this, but we are making a new video just
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer yeah I watched the video a few times now while guessing how much of the space you were using and it looks like you can do at least some of the things you did in a smaller space. So with some imagination people can imagine you are doing this in a smaller space.
A average 1 car garage with some extra space for storage is still a decent length. It's just going to take making some black boards and putting them on one end of it and not so much work in the width of the space but in the length of it.
It looks like the key is making some black board that can be moved around
