- Kelly From LA contacted us through our iNSPIRE site asking for help turning his small garage into a shooting space. So while we where in LA we found an Aussie model and Peter showed what he could with his space.

Definitely one of the most concise and useful tutorials Peter has done. Great procedure description. Not everyone can keenly observe and figure out what they are seeing in a way that is transferable to other situations. This example goes a long way to helping fix that. Lovely model as well. She obviously liked the photos of herself. We all did. Thanks.
Wow, thanks!
What's actually so good here is to see how excited and into it Peter still gets when he plays with the light after all those years.
You can tell he just loves what he does which is inspiring. Great video as always.
Thanks so much Shane
"I only know what I know because I've been doing it a long time I didn't go to school, I learned it my way." Love that. Keep the knowledge coming! 🙏🏼
Thanks! Will do!
Peter is such a good teacher/instructor/demonstrator. This happens because of this and that... That's the way if you want your listener to understand things...
I can't believe how much the light changed at the end when you moved her back in front of the blackdrop. Goddamn you know your craft Peter. I've learned so much from your channel. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. You're one of the greats mate.
Thanks heaps for your support
Perfect demo. Now I get it. The other videos explains it. But seeing this in a real setting was perfect. Thank you !!!!! Cheers to Kelly as well. Thanks
Glad it helped!
Peter's so humble. He's a genius
Thank you so much 😊
again an amazing session from Peter showing us how to take advantage of a small space with a simple light setup... thank you for sharing your experience.
Glad you liked it! Thanks heaps
Awesome!!! Thanks Peter as this was a super video as to small spaces and awesome tips on lighting that I've never seen before and find a super value of information for every photographer. Thanks to Madeleine for her beautiful modeling and Kelly for use of the studio and asking for this great information to which created and lead to this great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Many thanks for this backstage session, very interesting to see how a real garage becames the photo studio!
Glad you enjoyed it
A pleasure to watch Peter, with a combination of years of personal and professional “try it and see”, coupled with a core of natural creative talent and flair, passing on those lifelong skills and experiences to another, who clearly had sufficient knowledge and flair himself to realise when he was in the presence of, and learning at the feet of ‘simple unpretentious genius!
Thanks heaps
great litle "pop up" workshop! Kelly is blessed to have had you point him in the right direction
Rocked Kelly's world! 🤣 This is a demonstration of skill that only comes from putting in the hours. A pleasure to watch.
Thanks
One of the best videos you've ever done. Brilliant.
Wow, thanks!
Brilliant! No B.S., just practical. Love it.
Much appreciated!
Really good to see Team Peter working in places like this. It certainly inspires us to shoot in whatever space we have. Good work guys!
Thanks so much
I watched this mans soul leave his body...and return lol Its amazing to see a master at work.
wow 😁
This channel is pure gold! So much information yet so entertaining.
Much appreciated!
Peter is amazing! Love the way he finds the light. He’s such an inspiration 👌🏾
Thank you
Thanks Peter for the very useful advices! Learnt a lot! God bless you!
Glad it was helpful!
Another fantastic session in the series. This was really close to my shooting spaces so it has been incredibly helpful to see Peter's approach to using the space.
Thanks
Oh does this give me some ideas, this concise tutorial is just smack full of information so, thanks to you Sir!! Also, much thanks to Kelly, Madeleine and of course, Bec!! I will be building, or re-working a small area of my basement for any portrait work I may want to do, from my days working in TV I am making a cyclorama, or cyc (said - Psych) and hanging two bars from the ceiling in a cross formation to hang small lights and boxes from. Debating on a backdrop between a couple of grey shades, a black and a scene of some kind or simply going with a green screen and then choosing a backdrop or image to use, the downside to that is that I'll have no perceived depth of field so hopefully the budget allows for some backdrops, even if it's old sheets or curtains from a yard sale or something. Cheers from Canada!! - Dave
I'm glad it was helpful
You show your incredible knowledge once again
I try
One of the most helpful videos on lighting I've seen!
Glad it was helpful!
Absolute masterclass Peter! 👏📸
Thanks
Great video Peter my first wedding was horrible I been doing this for 37years and now I'm wedding are fantastic the ladies tell me so the more you do it the better you get atit thanks again for the great work Paul.
Thanks for watching Paul
Always learning from your videos Peter! Thank you…!!
Glad to hear that!
Amazing simplicity. The fruit of experience. 😉
Thank you
beautiful girl. Wow. I miss having a garage to shoot from. Great teaching day. Lot's of great modeling agencies in LA. I kinda miss those days, maybe because I was still a kid back then and all the beginning photographers would help each other out.
Peter teaching style is very old school and learn as you do. Others of seen through the years focus to much on their personal style and how to copy them. Making your own journey will develop your own style. It evolves and develops as you discover. I dont need ten tips on anything...direction and not being afraid of trying everything is also very enjoyable. I play with flash outdoors doing landscape style photography...its fun and really keeps me creative. Love this mans work and his patience with others in teaching.
wow thank you so much David
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I dont think people believe instructors need feedback..i think everyone does. 👍
Peter, the Master of Light!
Thank you
Wow, Peter is a great instructor. So motivational as well. Love it.
Happy you enjoyed it
I have a smaller photo studio space in LA, this was helpful! Especially because im looking to add lights to the studio!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey you guys
Peter, I really like the way you Bec take it down to a level where we all can follow you. No fancy stuff - just look at your light and move the model, background or light slightly until you got it. Cheers from Denmark
Thanks heaps 😊
So much information in a short time. Peter again proves that "It's not about equipment; it's about knowing how to analyze and use light, ambient and artificial."
Thank you Jim
Stunning model amazing how you just get wonderful photos just using the light
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent version of the small space! TBH I once had an issue with lighting in a similar scenario and this answered the question as to how to fix it!
Very helpful and practical! Thanks.
You're welcome!
“The only way you learn is to do” , I love your philosophy Peter!
Thanks so much
Quite impressive seeing Peter get into a new space and completely own it, that’s mastery.
Just give her wine🤔 maybe that’s the trick😁
Thanks, she doesn't drink 😊
Fantastic. You are the man Peter.
Thank you
I love this. I have a similar setup right now, I turned a 2 car garage in to my studio space. I painted my walls matte black to eliminate any unwanted light bounce. I'm curious where you told him about hanging a black sheet over the opened door to darken the garage if I were to get a 20 ft curtain rod with white sheers along the garage door opening if it would help soften the light coming in on that angle while still providing privacy since I often shoot boudoir in there as well.
What a cracking video!
Thanks
Good job guys -- as Peter says - it just comes from decades of shooting. So learn from him to shorten the learning time.
Thanks
Brilliant video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great stuff!!
Thanks!
I've started to garner a little attention in my area and somewhat regularly have models reaching out to me to work together because they love my work. But I don't see it, really. Imposter Syndrome. They tell me they love what I do, but all I can think is that I'm lucky enough to have learned a couple of tricks that work for me, and if anyone ever finds out, that will be the end of it. So, it's such a salve to me to hear it laid bare by Peter, one of the photographers whom I greatly admire ad learn from in every video: "The longer you do something, the more tricks you learn. That's all it is." That should be lesson #1 for any aspiring photographer. Put that on a t-shirt.
Thank you so much, really appreciate it
very helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
wow, amazing lesson experience is king!
Thanks heaps
This was cool, Love it.
Thanks so much
Love this idea for a video. Using real people's "studio" to make magic!
Glad you liked it!
Liked the mentorship feel i was getting in the video
Thanks
If I knew you were going to be in LA I would have offered my space which is a tad smaller but I think would have been a fun challenge for you. Next time perhaps haha great videos! I really enjoy watching you navigate your way through these small spaces and capture amazing stills.
Thanks Eduardo :)
Just wonderful. Andreas Jorns explained the same about natural light in his video with Stephan Wiesner. His approach to the models is very much comparable to Peters' too.
Gabriel Baharlia (a former assistant of Helmut Newton) is a very interesting photographer too.
When Peter directed her to walk towards the front of the garage - you could literally see the overall change in the quality of the natural light…
Well....yeah. That's because that's where the light's coming from.
Classic open shade lighting. Natural light Wedding photographers go to. At least mine lol. Come to the edge of the shade. Will get nice flat light on your subject and dark background.
Damn Peter is impressive.
great video :)
Thanks for the visit
Any suggestions for doing Full Length shots with low ceilings similar to this garage? (My Kitchen I think is 6x4m and has 2.4m high ceilings) Was recently trying to get a medium Octabox positioned overhead and in front of the model in an attempt to have it facing down and sligtly in front of the model to feather the light from above, unless the model is hobbit sized there is not much room. Half thinking of trying to just point the octo at the ceiling to bounce the light back down instead or bare bulb it with a small reflector.
OMG, that thing you did when you asked her to drop her chin and all the bad shadows went away!!!
Thants what I call seeing the light
Amazing!!! And what can I say about the model... 😍😍😍
Thank you!
Peter, you are a God given help for this guy (he even called you Jezus)
But paying Bec's wine consumption could end up in an expensive course ;-)
Great video and as always, thanks so much for sharing !
Wow, thanks
Did he say her name was Maddie? It would be great to see more of her and the pictures. She has a great portrait face.

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Thanks again.
Hallo sir. I m Intersted to Swizerland Languge, Please Gudie me, I am in Pakistan
Peter, as usual, there is no light you do not like.
I love all light 😁
So moral of the story, if you want good light in a garage bring your model outside of the garage. Lol.
no if thats what you got out of it you learned nothing
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Didn't mean to overly dumb it down. This video is great as they all are. I was commenting on the idea in the first few minutes of the video that the light is better as she comes from the back of the garage out closer to where the source of light is coming from...seems rather obvious. Similar effect bringing a model out towards the light in a parking garage or window in a smaller room as you've done in other videos.
Peter basically walked her out of the garage
no
Peter people do not learn very well think back to school marks some always failed others always achieved 100% people will not learn by practice in a reasonable time what they will do is practice their failures over and over as a example look at the owner of that garage. people will blame their camera, lights, model ext. but not themselves. the best way to learn is through school or a mentor or maybe your workshops, could i do a video on that topic
10,000 hours
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer i had proper training and class time both measuring in the double digits in terms of hours i would put my work up against any top photographer. i do agree photography is some thing that is never perfected but a education is always the best foundation. would you give someone keys to your car without training, not me
