I like how your video is realistic about the actual cost of this transformation. All too often people will do these renovations but not be honest about the cost of each individual step/item for purposes of youtube relevance. Awesome job and gives me a good idea for myself in the future to do similar of potential costs!

I'm a video editor scanning through all these construction videos and trying to see how I could apply their renovation to what I need and at a fraction of their space. got an acacia butcher block for a height adjustable custom desk i'm working on, really glad this vid popped up on the feed. great stuff, easily deserve more subs!
Its a pretty funny coincidence, I'm sitting at a birch desk 30x72 inches, that I also stained in red mahogany, built it back in 2012. Still useing it to this day, though I opted for a gloss polyurethan finish after being unhappy with semigloss and satin. Three coats brushed on, sanding in between, final coat sprayed with an HVLP. Its a bit more complex though, built in drawers and legs and such. Cool build, keep it up.
@@DavidBlodgett high volume low pressure, spray gun. Basically a paint gun, I used a cheapy one from harbor freight since I didn't want the urethane to wreck a decent paint gun. Rattle can gets the job done too, but you generally can't get as thick of a coat and cans cost a lot more. If you send your final brush coat smooth and spray that last coat you minimize or remove any brush strokes. Even a foam brush will leave lines here and there and I was being picky,
You know, I will probably use that method in a few years when I recoat the desk because its true, upon close inspection, I see where I readjusted my body when going across the desk. Thanks for the tip.

Very well done. If I may add a suggestion, You could put in some ridged foam on your garage door. I used the 2 in 4x8 sheets to make fake walls in my basement. I primed and painted mine! They look amazing

Highly recommend getting a monitor arm for your monitor and your laptop to finish off the aesthetic and add some additional functionality to your desk.
to anyone watching: do not fuck around with garage doors. especially if they have a spring in them, there's enough tension in the spring that as you saw towards the end, it can launch things (and itself) and is dangerous enough to lacerate and kill you just from popping out. they are stupidly fucking dangerous to DIY with. it's the best couple hundred you'll ever spend to get someone professional to do it. or amongst the best.

Before I type too many more words here, I should point out that I am a 58 year old man, WHO has always wanted a garage and NEEDED a work space, BUT for decades EVERYBODY stood in my way on the topic!! So that said all I have ever wanted WAS a garage, and now with health problems, I have had to give up on that dream!! NOW first things first, converting a garage to a home office, to me is a stupid idea!! Because these days owning a $30,000 (or more) vehicle IS an investment, and it bothers me, when I see people leave a car in the driveway that DO own a garage!! BUT you have to know too, I was trained as a mechanic, so it also goes against my longing to own old collector cars as well too!!
The average American uses their garage for storage. While guys like this in the video probably make their income from the computer so having an office is major. While the last group probably works from home. Context man. It's a new day.

Thank you ! and yes I did that, might've not shown in the video since i started with 80 and worked my way up to 220 for the black bench and for my desk, I just used 220 since it already came sanded at 150.
Doing this for the past couple weeks. Such a fun project! :) Any tips on leveling a sloped garage floor for a workbench? For context, it would house 3D printers, so the slight mislevel will defo matter. For now, I'm using shims under the printers themselves, but I'm researching some more permanent solutions for the long run.
I know this was 3 months ago, but your garage is sloped for drainage purposes. Build the workbench legs longer to account for the slope. If its a workbench meant for only the garage itself then that is a permanent solution. You can do either but its a matter of probably thousands of dollars rather than just spending a fraction of the price on just building the legs longer.

Next time you stain something, sand with 220 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain. It'll make the stain look and apply a lot better.

a concrete flooring company could probably level our your garage perfectly. But thats expensive soo shims should work
