This is awesome. I’m contemplating an X in Colorado, and in the first 2 minutes I said “nope, not buying it.” Then when I watched the partial open and I thought “ok, I’m buying it again.” 😂 Your videos have been very helpful, thank you!
We obviously love the model X as we are on our 3rd version. We have been upgrading every 3 years, not because of problems, but because of the improvements they have made with each generation. I do love the falcon wing doors and I think it will be a sad day if Tesla ever decides to stop producing them. My biggest fear back in 2017 when we bought our 1st X was that they might turn out to be a maintenance nightmare, but that hasn't been the case for us. We don't have kids or rear seat passengers all that often, so maybe we aren't the typical X owner, but I think that the advantages of the door outweigh any perceived disadvantages. The one caveat to that statement would be if you have a garage with a low ceiling or obstructions where the doors can't be opened. Take care and thanks for tuning in.
I subscribed after watching this (first time watching you). You're so positive and educative. You are focused on small details and that's wonderful. God bless 😊
in all fairness to Model X, the rain will also enter regular-door SUVs. I don't understand why haters always blame the falcon doors when in the rain as if regular doors don't let rain inside.
It’s not that zero rain gets in regular doors, but it’s that falcon doors leaves a big section of the roof line open, which as you can see from the video, allows rain to get inside nearly half of the back interior seats.
no dumb ass. Regulars SUV only open on the sides only. The Falcon is like 40% opening on the roof where puddles of water will come crashing in when you open the door.
I recently discovered your channel and I can say that I am having a lot of fun watching your videos. The videos are really entertaining and I want to see more of them.
Your videos are very informative and useful. I been debating whether to buy a model Y or a Model X. This video also solved my curiosity on how practical the falcon doors would be like on a raining day. Having all of the pros and cons definitely helps. Thanks!
Exactly. I've seen other videos from owners that have young kids and mentioned what a tremendous help the doors are to get them out in the rain because trying to get them, deal with a regular door, a stroller and an umbrella can be too much if another adult isn't there to help.
Great video, I love the experiment as it does give a pragmatic experience to anyone thinking of buying the model X especially if they have a family with kids. As a long time minivan owner and have active teenagers, I can tell you that it’s not much different because my van still get some rain inside when slide-door opens and it’s raining. Furthermore, it gets worse when it’s windy and rainy, the reality is you’re not going to have the door open for a long period of time, also having a towel to dry things up is always good especially when having an active crew in the back. Thank you for the informative video.
Thanks for the feedback. The trick for any of these vehicles is to get in and out as quickly as possible, but the truth is, most of the time everyone's clothing gets wet just getting to the car, so a little bit of water entering through the falcon wing door is not that big of a deal. A nice dry towel and the heated seats will go a long way to making everyone in the back happy.
I would like an option to have a “rain mode” for the rear doors to prevent them from opening fully if the windshield wipers are going, with the ability to preset how much they open. A preset “rain mode open” to 3:31 would be perfect.

I think it is one of the issues that might keep some buyers away from the X, and I just wanted to point out that there are ways minimize the problem, but owners will probably want to keep a towel handy for guests that ride in the back seat. If nothing else, it makes for a great laugh, especially if you are not too fond of the in-laws. :)
Just an FYI, if rain is pouring down (like it is 90% of the time), the falcon doors are more protective. If the rain is blowing sideways, any car will get wet. :)

Buyers beware. Use it only on sunny days. And it gives you a reason to get a model Y for the rainy days. Nice intention, Elon !!!
very useful video. I am planning to purchase model x this year and wonder if you have ever park the car for more than a month, if yes what did you do to keep the batteries charged or in your experience if the batteries can get damage if the car is parked for extended period.
I've never parked the car for more than a week with it unplugged. If I was planning to be gone for a month and I could leave my car plugged in, I'd just set the charge percentage to 75% and not worry about it. If I had to leave it unplugged for 30 days, then I would probably charge it to 90%, turn off all the energy consumption items in the menu (sentry mode off, always connected off, overheat protection off, smart summon standby mode off, etc.) Tesla says that the car will lose about 1% per day on average, but I have not tested that estimate. If the car is parked outside and the climate is very hot or extremely cold, I'm guessing the car would use more energy to protect the battery, but how much more I don't know. If the car is plugged in, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Here is what the Tesla Owner's Manual says in regards to this. "Model X has one of the most sophisticated battery systems in the world. The most important way to preserve the Battery is to LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE PLUGGED IN when you are not using it. This is particularly important if you are not planning to drive Model X for several weeks. When plugged in, Model X wakes up when needed to automatically maintain a charge level that maximizes the lifetime of the Battery. NOTE: When left idle and unplugged, your vehicle periodically uses energy from the Battery for system tests and recharging the 12V battery when necessary. There is no advantage to waiting until the Battery’s level is low before charging. In fact, the Battery performs best when charged regularly. " and "Never allow the Battery to fully discharge. Even when Model X is not being driven, its Battery discharges very slowly to power the onboard electronics. The Battery can discharge at a rate of approximately 1% per day, though the discharge rate may vary depending on environmental factors (such as cold weather), vehicle configuration, and your selected settings on the touchscreen. Situations can arise in which you must leave Model X unplugged for an extended period of time (for example, at an airport when traveling). In these situations, keep the 1% in mind to ensure that you leave the Battery with a sufficient charge level. For example, over a two week period (14 days), the Battery may discharge by approximately 14%. Discharging the Battery to 0% may result in damage to vehicle components. To protect against a complete discharge, Model X enters a low-power consumption mode when the displayed charge level drops to approximately 0%. In this mode, the Battery stops supporting the onboard electronics and auxiliary 12V battery. Once this low-power consumption mode is active, immediately plug in Model X to prevent a jump-start and 12V battery replacement."
Great tip. I’ll definitely remember this. This will be my first winter with my X; and while we don’t get a lot of snow in Kentucky (compared to what you see out there), I’ve heard some horror stories about opening the FWDs with snow on the roof. Have you experience this?
If there is a pile of snow on the roof, it can fall in as the door is opening and land right on the seat. It is best to clear the snow with a small brush before opening, and if possible, only open one side. It is easy for all passengers to enter from one side. I have one of those combination ice scraper and snow brush on a short handle that works fine.
Just bought my 2nd X: same color midnight silver. My 2021 has a Christmas X icon. I have not used it on my new one. Can flapping the wings to the Mannheim music damage the doors drive motors? Enjoy driving the X.
A two timer, just like me. :) I don't have a definitive answer about the Christmas dance, but I can't imagine that Tesla would provide a feature that would cause harm to the car. I'm betting that they would have pulled the feature long ago if it had the potential to cause damage.
Good video. 1st time I wondered about the rain snow etc. etc. I wondered if they could use some kind of curtain flaps that are attached to the upper half of the door when it swings up and open so it can catch it and then as the door closes it is rolled back in like the automatic sunscreen on most of the Mercedes for the back window. They might get dry as they roll back in with an ac vent blowing really fast air through it as it closes or a vacuum as it closes that spits it out the bottom of the car.
I was curious about putting on a roof rack. I will be using a Treefrog suction rack for a paddle board and roof box. I wondered if I can have a 34" wide box or paddle board fit while still using one door. The one door would not have to open fully. I've seen others use thin roof boxes which won't fit my needs. Both my Thule Sup Taxi and Vector Box could hang off the side of the car a bit if safe. Really want to get the Tesla though we might have to shift to the BMW IX due to this issue.
Hi Wes. That is a good question. A video is worth a thousand words, so I went to the garage and shot a short video that might help (fingers included in the shot at no charge :) . I have seen a few photos where people have attached a professional suction cup type rack to a Model X, but I don't think I would put one on myself. My biggest concern is that one of the Falcon Wing Doors might be opened inadvertently. The doors can be opened by the key fob, the outside door switch, the interior door switch, and from the touch screen. You might have to get creative with some duct tape. Also keep in mind that there is a fixed narrow rectangular glass pannel between the two doors. I don't know how suitable or strong that panel is. Anyway, here is a link to the video. This won't be listed on my channel, but you can view it with this link. ruclips.net/video/6PnL4RI_OjI/видео.html
@@modelxevfun2858 Hope life is going well, well turns out I found a way to get my snowboard in, and that was my only issue. We take our dog so don't want to put the back seat down. I'll be getting mine in the next few months. I also bought an F150 so I can stop using my SUV like a Pickup..... The Model X will be our road tripper and our around town car.
Great presentation with the tips added. I’m curious if you’ve experienced any failure to open the FW doors when direct sunlight is falling on them? I have this issue with my June 2018 build 100D 5-seater - Obstacle detected (San Diego area). The door can still be opened by pressing continuously on the open button, but annoying and embarrassing when it occurs. I discussed with service and no answer.
No I have not had that error occur. I wonder if it is heat related. Is your car a light or dark color? When it happens, can you repeat the error? Can you fully open the front door on the same side from the center touch screen when the fwd gives a false obstacle? If so, just as a test, you might try repositioning the car so that the door is in the shade, wait a few minutes, and try the fwd and see if it still detects an obstacle. These tests might help the Tesla technicians diagnose the problem. I'm betting that you have an ultrasonic sensor that is flakey or has a poor connection, but it is only a guess.
The floor mats are Lloyd Northridge All Weather mats (not sponsored). I moved them over from our previous X and they have 3 winters and 53,000 miles on them. They still look great and are holding up well. ruclips.net/video/Wo_D9cHZQko/видео.html
Very useful and educational video. Can you use the phone to open/drive the car without the keyfob? I am about to pull the trigger on the 2021 X same color as yours. Thanks and keep these videos coming.
The phone app can be used to unlock the car and drive the car, providing you have cellular service for both the phone and the car. This is not the same as for the Model Y and 3, which uses the phone as a key via bluetooth.
The doors work when the car is plugged in. The doors do not have a traditional handle on the outside. There is touch panel with a contact switch that opens the door from the outside..
Do you find that your falcon wing doors open fully in your garage when you have the geolocation set to full open? Mine don't despite the setting and I see yours didn't in this video, but I don't know if you have full open turned on.
Yes, mine open fully in my garage when there is ample clearance between the door and the garage wall. My garage is a bit oversized and has tall garage doors, so that helps
3:05 I’ve never had to wipe down my “another car” while living in the rainy PNW. The excuses and compromises TSLA owners to hide short falls are amazing! Idk what’s more ridiculous, the attention from falcon doors opening all the way or your child crawling to get into your car. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for tuning in. The doors are not everyone's cup of tea that is for sure. I now have 5 years of experience with them (our first X was a 2017), so they just seem normal to me now. It will be interesting to see if these doors make it to the next revision of the car.
Eventually Elon will be able to control the weather and this won't be a problem.

@@wesrobinson7366 Fantastic. It sounds like you have a great combo. The X will be well worth the wait. Thanks for tuning in and have a great week.
This guy talking about buy “his first” model X, me just dreaming about getting a model X.
Yet I'm here dreaming to own a key fob
Ikr I want one so bad
Haha this guy is great!
Thanks. No issue with the water falling in from the roof when the doors are opened? Think that was a previous seal issue.
I haven't noticed any issues with water falling into the opening if the rain has stopped and you open the door.
@@modelxevfun2858 thanks👍
Do they sell these with normal doors?
The model Y is Tesla's smaller crossover and it has normal passenger doors

Thank you for the info!
I'm betting that you have an ultrasonic sensor that is flakey or has a poor connection, but it is only a guess.
not bad...appreciate it
In a previous video by you, I noticed the floor mats, what brand are they?
Question will the doors work when plugged in and how do you open from outside with handle
@@modelxevfun2858 I suspect the tall garage doors make the difference. I think the door is sensing the door rail. The ceiling is 10+ feet.
You should do a test and open your doors to see if somebody could get in because that’s a big opening
Where is this place ? really nice beautiful place mountains everywhere, please let me know thx.
This video was shot in Star Valley Wyoming, USA
I think Batman had the same problem with his bat mobile but never saw him complain..
So nice Video but in India people are excited to know more about price and mileage
Well it was created in so cal where they rarely get rain.
It will be interesting to see if these doors make it to the next revision of the car.
good job
Thank you! Cheers!
good review
Glad you enjoyed it
