American Football was originally built from Rugby League; which in turn is built from Rugby Union. Apart from different rules, names & outfits; American football retains many of the original Rugby League game plays, field layouts, etc. It’s not overly difficult to flip between the 2 games.
Wow thank you so much for this! I'm a dual citizen US and NZ, but have only lived there for a couple years when I was young, and then short visits now and then. I'm thinking of moving there with my wife, if we can find work. This brings back so many memories especially about the outdoors (I can still remember the sound of all those amazing birds in the forest) and youth sports. And the fish and chips! As you talked about Maori culture it made me tear up emotionally because my Dad told us stories about getting caned if they spoke Te Reo Maori at school And the racism I’ve experienced in my life. BUT! I know we are Warriors and love with all our hearts! We love the whenua (land) because it’s part of us! We are kaitiaki (guardians) of the land to leave things the way they were for generations to come. You have honoured us with your appreciation and love of our country. The Maori culture is revered by other indigenous cultures around the world as a beacon of “HOPE”. I’m so proud of how far we (as a nation) have come in such a short space of time. Therefore, on behalf of me, mine and my ancestors, I’d like to take this opportunity to say, thank you NZ, well done and long may it continue. With all due respect, what really makes NZ unique and rare on the world stage, is not due to sports, population size, humanitarian aid, defence force, infrastructure, agriculture and fisheries or imports and exports or the scenic beauty and native flora and fauna. Similar to many other countries, it’s basically the indigenous culture and NZ (in partnership) should be capitalising via tourism in other parts of the country other than ROTORUA, no disrespect intended towards my Te Arawa relatives. Maybe on February 6th 2040, the 200 year anniversary of our national day and come together as “ONE”. Let’s celebrate being different from other countries. We are better off working together than apart, “ 3:32 He Mahi Tahi Tatou, He Iwi Kotahi Tatou”. It’s not rocket science, united we stand or divided we fall, let’s keep moving forward and learning from the past… noho ora mai ra koutou katoa, i raro i te manaakitanga o te Atua.

Gardening as a hobby or pastime, if you prefer, is huge here in NZ. Also fishing, both salt and freshwater, is very popular. The trout fishing is some of the best in the world and fly fishing in the back country rivers and streams is world famous. Hunting deer, wild pigs and duck shooting in season is also popular for many people..
@Edward Amos Brandwein They were introduced. There are seven species altogether. The red deer is the most common and were imported from Scotland and England. The fallow deer from England, the whitetail and wapiti (elk) from the U.S. and the sika sambar and rusa from Asia.
Was recently in Wellington and WOW! So many new food places to eat at in the CBD. You definitely aren't going to starve there. They all seem to be busy too. I did notice a robot being used at a Kiwi chain restaurant called Cobb & Co in Porirua. That was an eye opener.
If you want something a bit different for your kids to try for a sport (and you n hubby), clay target shooting. There is a gun club in almost every town in NZ. Most have a club day on the 2nd or 3rd Sunday of the month. Go along and watch for a bi. Ask to have a go, and someone will lend you a gun and guide you through what they need to, and the club will shout you some targets. I've shot at a lot of clubs over many years, and a couple of things I can tell you with absolute certainty: Almost everyone who tries it enjoys it. People who turn up just wanting to have a try are ALWAYS welcomed. And dont tell your boys this bit - girls are generally better at it than boys across all age groups.
Badminton is a big sport here??? Really? Where? Born here and never met anyone that plays it. Skiing is huge here??? If you have lots of money for travel, accommodation, slope rentals etc... maybe. Obviously you have a decent amount of money and can afford these things. The average person can't here.
Have watched a number of your videos over quite some time and never really thought you had understood our mindset but this comes close...eg..yes sports is integral to our lifestyle but we don't have a "winning" sports mentality..we have a huge emphasis of showing that we have the skill sets..for all sports..!
This makes me so homesick. There’s so much amazing about living in Europe, but the FEEL NZ has, the rich culture, the scenery, the friendliness of Kiwis is just what life should be. I moved from NZ to Canada first and I was SHOCKED at the way indigenous people are treated there. I went to the far north of Canada and I bawled my eyes out witnessing it and when I spoke to non indigenous Canadians about it they were so nonchalant. They are so brainwashed in to believing indigenous people have lesser value. It’s madness.

Our major sports are very British, and they come from our British ancestors --- soccer (football) rugby, cricket, netball. But we have so many other sports as well, summer and winter.

You’re right, compared to living here in Europe where I see people throw chips ps keys out their car windows. Your pronunciation of Maori is pretty good, but the R needs some practice. At the moment it sounds more like an L. It's much the same as the Spanish R, a flick of the tongue across the roof of the mouth, like a very soft and fast D.
LOL when your walking around Sylvia park on a Saturday and Sunday arvo it certain feels like we're closer to 6 million haha and there's nothing wrong with that at all, another example is missionbay on a Sunday almost looks like Bondi beach, Bodies everywhere it is beautiful to see how truly sociable our culture is, also this comes back to how we have an outdoorsy culture and a portion of those people out and about are spending a lot of money in cafes having coffees , bottomless brunches, catching up with family and friends from babies to senior citizens they're all out doing it.

Do NZers still use lots of lanolin based products? It's that characteristic smell that I associate with New Zealand. And yes sports were important. All the husbands played rugby on Sundays followed by a wonderful curry buffet. The wives gossiped on the sidelines (and explained to my American mother how sports made their men perform better in the marriage bed. The good old days !)

It is amazing in NZ that all kinds of sports, activities are accessible to anyone especially available through school curriculum. In quite a few countries, Sports like rugby is only available in elite, well-to-do schools or membership, elite clubs where one has to pay exorbitant $$ to be members.
I agree with everything you said accept the cultural aspect, my opinion won’t be popular probably but here goes.. I think as a country we’ve over compensated toward the Māori culture, I do think Māori language and culture should be available to learn in school but it’s SHOULD NOT be forced on to students, there are racist aspects to our society here in NZ on BOTH SIDES of that coin, a great example is our health system prioritising Māori over all others. Yes Europeans did wicked stuff in the past but let’s not kid ourselves here Māori we’re no beacon of love and light either. Just my two cents…
Perhaps you should look at the treaty and how typically the indigenous people wind up with the short end of the stick and the stats - when the crown do not honour an agreement under which a nation was established then obviously when efforts are made to honour the treaty you're going to feel like something is being forced upon you - that is a generational thing where for decades every NZer coasted along in blissful ignorance . If you feel "forced" you should have some empathy for the people who are still fighting for the crown to honour the treaty. This may be the other side of your point but it is equally unpopular - why? Frankly because people like you don't believe in a fair shake - how unkiwi - or is it? This lady should be allowed to post her own feelings about life in NZ - her channel her honest experience - knowing things come with time and an effort to open the mind to facts not feelings - NZ's founding document is the Treaty of Waitangi - We have no constitution but like the American Constitution - it only means anything if people honour it.

Do NZers still use lots of lanolin based products? It's that characteristic smell that I associate with New Zealand. And yes sports were important. All the husbands played rugby on Sundays followed by a wonderful curry buffet. The wives gossiped on the sidelines (and explained to my American mother how sports made their men perform better in the marriage bed. The good old days !)

Born and raised in NZ have two beautiful maori grand babies
It is amazing in NZ that all kinds of sports, activities are accessible to anyone especially available through school curriculum. In quite a few countries, Sports like rugby is only available in elite, well-to-do schools or membership, elite clubs where one has to pay exorbitant $$ to be members.
That is a good point - I have not thought of it like that before!
The one thing Kiwi's dislike more than anything else is elitism and snobbery.

I agree with everything you said accept the cultural aspect, my opinion won’t be popular probably but here goes..
I think as a country we’ve over compensated toward the Māori culture, I do think Māori language and culture should be available to learn in school but it’s SHOULD NOT be forced on to students, there are racist aspects to our society here in NZ on BOTH SIDES of that coin, a great example is our health system prioritising Māori over all others. Yes Europeans did wicked stuff in the past but let’s not kid ourselves here Māori we’re no beacon of love and light either. Just my two cents…
Perhaps you should look at the treaty and how typically the indigenous people wind up with the short end of the stick and the stats - when the crown do not honour an agreement under which a nation was established then obviously when efforts are made to honour the treaty you're going to feel like something is being forced upon you - that is a generational thing where for decades every NZer coasted along in blissful ignorance . If you feel "forced" you should have some empathy for the people who are still fighting for the crown to honour the treaty. This may be the other side of your point but it is equally unpopular - why? Frankly because people like you don't believe in a fair shake - how unkiwi - or is it? This lady should be allowed to post her own feelings about life in NZ - her channel her honest experience - knowing things come with time and an effort to open the mind to facts not feelings - NZ's founding document is the Treaty of Waitangi - We have no constitution but like the American Constitution - it only means anything if people honour it.

People like me… hmmm, people who feel like second class citizens in what as much their country as it is anyone else’s by wokesters like yourself. Fair shake? What’s that when it’s at home? People all over this country are not getting a fair shake In many different ways but it seems to be more and more so if you’re of Maori heritage you can jump the cue to some degree or another, that’s not a racist remark, it’s a verifiable fact!
I think the Treaty of Waitangi needs to go and a new document drawn up where no ethnicity can claim dominion over land, water, air or any other “rights”, all should be treated equal under one law for all citizens and the document should also reject any external governance such as the EU etc.
Our electoral system sucks and should be reviewed because you get the least voted for parties often with disproportionate amounts of power, politicians need to be much more accountable particularly around spending taxpayers money because we’re heading towards bankruptcy at break neck speed and it’s largely due to irresponsible wasteful spending and cronyism.
My point here in this rant this country has many many problems and there’s a wokeness in our political system that bent on creating wider racial divisions by elevating an ethnicity over others which however you want to boil it down is wrong! We don’t need more problems, we need less…
