Good list- a friend told me a story about not tipping in NZ. They left some money on their table as a tip, and another customer asked if they had left their money there by mistake/ lost it. Later, while walking away, the server ran after them with the money telling them they had accidentally left it there. My friend explained it was for her (the server) and she amiably joked in reply that "it's all good, I've already got a job, thanks". I love it. Kiwis are such nice people- I want to go to NZ at some stage!
Tom Newman When was this? The majority of people in NZ have changed immensely over the past few years. A lot has changed, immigration and a lot of things have ruined the country. A lot of people have had to become tougher, causing them to become meaner.
@@viiperbiite What? Maybe the 'Majority' of people have changed where you're from, but I've seen no difference in my day to day interactions. Saying that the 'Majority' of people have changed 'Immensely' is quite a generalization, to say the very least.
Sometimes there is a tip jar at the counter that you can put some money in - I’m pretty sure it goes towards keeping the restaurant running or something, I’m not entirely sure 😂
And don't go off hiking into the mountains or bush alone or unprepared. My cousin visited from Canada once, thinking NZ was so small he'd be fine. Went off by himself (against my Mothers advice) and got lost - he was lucky to get out without any serious consequences- New Zealand is not all domesticated and even experienced climbers etc sometimes die in the wild. 🇳🇿
Elle Cook- not trying to be snarky, but what they were thinking is they wanted to go hiking. And Rosie even said get out of the cities, but gave no advice or warnings about preparation. Sadly if you don't spell it out for some people, they wont get it.
I went tramping with randoms once as part of a tramping club, and two of them were from North America... We gave them standard club guidance on what to wear and pack etc. They wore jeans, didn't bring waterproof clothes, didn't put stuff in a drybag, and the worst part was mid-track, they were already walking ahead, when they decided to run off to the hut, and not tell the rest of the group. Consequently we had to go slower looking for them in the rain. Luckily we found them at the hut as we were about to have to walk back 2-3 hours to get reception to raise the alarm.
Agree strongly. Educate yourself to conditions and basic survival/ necessities to take, before you leave civilization. Nature can be brutal to the inexperienced and unprepared.

Young Savage The fact that both countries are relatively close and have English as their mother tongue does not suffice to make comparisons between them. Actually, Australia and New Zealand have more differences than similarities.
For having travelled here are my tips : 1) Speed cameras are hidden, there is no sign. I got a ticket (or my friend, as we were both driving and had no idea who drove it when we got flashed). Luckily it was only like 20 €, it would have been 8 times that in Australia 2) Protect yourselves against sandflies, especially on the West coast of the South Island. 3) Do mind wildlife on the beach. Seals and sealions may look peacefull but can charge 4) Keas are curious and thieves, they'll steal money, food, anything shiny, and will damage your car. 5) Plan for rain. It rains a lot in New Zealand, especially on the West and South coast, so you should plan for what to do in case it pours. 6) Food is often great, but don't expect meals after 9 pm. Like every English speaking nation, they eat around 6 pm. 7) The islands may seem small, but the roads are slow. So don't plan for touring the South Island in 10 days for example. Mountain roads are winding, it may take you an hour to do 50 km. Take your time. 8) The best stuff is often hidden. Don't stick only to the touristy spots. They can be crowded, and with the Lord of the Rings hype, many places are just as crowded as an American national park or a European city. Wake up early, plan for hikes, stay several days in the same area. Accommodation is cheap, so you can afford it.

NZ does have a country wide frequent inter-regional and long distance bus/coach and sightseeing network that operates 140 daily services to 600 cities and towns, 12 national parks allowing you travel from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island including ferry services between the North and South Islands. Traveling by bus, coach or scenic coach, is more environmentally friendly and safer than a car or campervan and in some cases it is quicker than traveling by car, at least you see the sights in stead of driving. To travel around NZ, the cheapest way is using a bus/ferry pass that is valid for 12 months and can be topped up as you travel. Remember NZ, is similar size to Japan and Italy and larger than the UK, making NZ bigger than it appears on a map. Nearly 60% of the country is made of hills and mountains which makes travel distance longer than what is shown a mobile app like Google Maps. etc, so traveling from Auckland to Queenstown can not be done in 1 to days. The minimum time is 3 days/2 nights (1 night stay in Wellington and 1 night stay in Christchurch) and with 3 half hour rest periods during the day. NZ is made of 15 unique geographical regions that has scenery and fauna that is not seen in other region/s, so it important to plan you stay in NZ important as there so much to see and do. NZ national road network is predominantly a 2 lane network which is sealed except for some small amount of regional roads which are not sealed. There are 4-6 lane highways around Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin only. There are no 4-6 lane highways linking the 6 major cities. Auckland is not the only city in NZ, there are 5 others being Christchurch (2nd largest), Wellington (3rd largest), Hamilton (4th largest), Dunedin (5th largest) and Tauranga (6th largest) and 9 other small regional cities. Queenstown is not a city but is a town. If you want to drive, remember the amount of CO2 emissions that you will be generating , drive for 5-6 hours per day between destinations at a mean average speed of 85kph (55 mph), to allow for sightseeing, traffic/weather conditions and rest. If you want to do a freedom camping tour, make sure you purchase or hire a vehicle that has its own ONBOARD toilet facility or stay at a registered gaming ground or backpacker hostels. The locals are NOT very happy about freedom campers using vehicles that DO NOT have an onboard toilet facility and pooing and weeing in native bush, etc when it suits them. Use registered camping grounds for toilet and hygiene functions. There are local free freedom camping sites but these a provide by local town, city and district councils at an expense to the local ratepayers expense and are available for a 1 night stay only. For further information on freedom camping in NZ - www.freedomcamping.org/ NZ wants responsible environmental friendly and sustainable tourism to keep NZ as an unique destination it is.

As an Australian who spends quite a bit of time in NZ (I also work for NZ's largest company) I can understand why outsiders confuse Australia and New Zealand. To an untrained ear or someone not from either country, the accents do sound similar (think US/Canadian to an untrained ear). Also I would say that the non-indigeous culture is extremely similar (especially if you are from the country areas). What I would say is that new Zealanders are generally far more proud and/or patriotic than Australians and embrace the rural/remote areas far more than Australians do. They are generally more outdoorsy and adventurous too. Great video though, it's pretty much spot on! (except for wallabies, I have seen them in the forestry before!) Chur!

This is probably only for certain parts of NZ. I work at a restaurant in Tauranga and I always get tips
@@viiperbiite What? Maybe the 'Majority' of people have changed where you're from, but I've seen no difference in my day to day interactions. Saying that the 'Majority' of people have changed 'Immensely' is quite a generalization, to say the very least.
When my family went to America we were super confused with tipping. NZ it's just pay and go.
YES! Sick of foreigners getting lost when tramping. What are they thinking???
People also forget about under-runners or Tomos. Once you fall in, you may never get out. Or found.

For having travelled here are my tips :
1) Speed cameras are hidden, there is no sign. I got a ticket (or my friend, as we were both driving and had no idea who drove it when we got flashed). Luckily it was only like 20 €, it would have been 8 times that in Australia
2) Protect yourselves against sandflies, especially on the West coast of the South Island.
3) Do mind wildlife on the beach. Seals and sealions may look peacefull but can charge
4) Keas are curious and thieves, they'll steal money, food, anything shiny, and will damage your car.

For further information on freedom camping in NZ - www.freedomcamping.org/

Nah, you need to travel the length of nz. We have a range of accents.
JWC I’m from Nelson and I find people from the North Island.. particularly Northland, Auckland have really strong accents. Also people from way down south have a different accent too!
They are generally more outdoorsy and adventurous too.

im a kiwi, and i think its fair to say we are not all nice, only most of us, i have met multiple people that were real grumpy, but its nothing too bad
You will find that the grumpy ones are the ones that can't get to a beach! :-)
There are grumps all over the vworld
We do have wallaby's in New Zealand. They're in the MacKenzie Country in the South Island. They escaped from wildlife park but have now developed a feral population
I'm from the US. I've been wanting to go to New Zealand since I was in high school!
NEVER sit on a table in New Zealand very offensive to Maori !!!
And anyone dumbass, just rude.
Or shag your secretary on the Auckland Council Board table, that's offensive to Europeans.... (Unless we are actually involved of course....!)....
We have similar rules in Australia, never shit in a Kurri's gumboot.
P S it is offensive, a table is for food not arse.
Yeah only strippers can sit on my table.
Hi I live in nz too, just be aware if you are coming here do not drink from the streams. Aerial bait drops happen frequently and its not safe to drink. Many tourists have been hospitalised so just take care of yourself and bring a bottle of water with you. This is mainly in national parks or isolated parts of nz.
Good stuff - from Pom moved to NZ to be with family. Most you pass in the street will say 'How'ya goin'? Kiwi's are great chatters - always groups standing around nattering. Yes, great laid back people - the f word can de dropped in anywhere!
Hey looking for tips, I’m an American thinking of moving to New Zealand (found this super helpful) - this feels like a silly question, but what are the thoughts on Americans moving to New Zealand? Anything I should do extra research on? It wouldn’t be for at least 2 years but I’m just trying to get some options.
Costs change, shipping costs, culture and phrasing
make sure that you know A LOT about our culture I suggest finding kiwis on social media and just seeing their general vide, a ton of americans that come over love to criticise everything we do so the main thing is to just try be chill and not take anything too seriously. Also dont try give off the impression that cos your from america that you are better than us hope you enjoy yr time if you do come over x
Sophie Bock people do that?! That’s insane. I’ve been looking into Kiwi culture a lot and I’m absolutely drawn to how everyone describes Kiwis as really nice and welcoming as well as how much New Zealand’s natural beauty is respected and preserved. That’s good advice though, thank you so much! I’m planning a vacation hopefully soon.
@@bethanycooke7497 we are a pretty much an easy going country and love having people around (current circumstances not included 😂) as long as you are polite and respectful we would love to have u 😊
@Gina Tia it's different when u are an actual tourist, I've lived in a small town after we moved back to nz and everyone is very friendly and very close, are u NI or SI? Because I find the south is more open
Isn't Auckland building a tram down dominion rd from the airport to the city?
Thank you so much for these tips! I'm going to stay in New Zealand for one year, from August 🙂
Spitting on the footpath just disgusts me when i see someone do it!
Totally agree i mean dont people understand it spreads diseases in my country we have a lot of those ignorants
In the USA they say, 'Always spit on the ceiling, any moron can spit on the floor!'
i'm australian but live in us, i've always hated when people spit on ground
My first trip is coming up the end of January. I appreciate all your advice
5:15 no kangaroos, snakes or koalas, but NZ does have wallabies. They were introduced as a hunting species and kinda got out of hand. See them all the time in the bush around Rotorua!
Heaps down by Waimate too
Possums?
@@kathyquan5954 I just googled them, apparently they are like little Kangaroos
Random fact: we do actually have wallabies in nz! Try we’re introduced by humans though
Aroha erm... one human infact. The very first governor, I forget his name. He was an Aussie who loved the wallaby and thought it’d be a great pet to have. I believe it was also this bloke who introduced that pointy plant with the pretty yellow flower as well, he figured it would make an awesome hedge around his estate. Bloody Aussies!
Michelle Heath Governor Grey how they got to the South Island tho I do not know as wildlife here have no natural predators here they have got out of hand in some places. I often see a few on the road between Whakatane and Rotorua as road kill.
If your visiting Auckland and want to explore Auckland more the best transport are trains. Everytime I visit Auckland I find trains ain't overcrowded (but avoid trains between 8am-9am or 5.30pm-6.30pm) morning is when people are commuting to school or work and same with evening people returning from school or work . Ive seen the best scenery and found interesting towns travelling by train .
My fiancé and I are getting married in New Zealand next year! These are good tips and gave me more to research! Thanks!
nah come on into our country, we got good stuff, and, more stuff that you might enjoy!
Don’t get ripped off by the tourism industry 😂 Rip off, save ya cash....
Visit Doubtless Bay, Milford sound, Rotorua ect
@caveman Versace We don't have harmful wildlife like you do.
@caveman Versace It's very rare to see one in the wild. They are monster sized but very timid and not poisonous. Bonus is no snakes when walking through long grass,
@@nzmarco Ironically, the only known snakes in the grass here live in a Beehive... :-(
I'm Australian and love New Zealand. It's really a beautiful country I have been 2 times now and I want to go again.
Onya Matey :-)
This rivalry stuff is insane. Less than 30 million people between us - parochialism is teh st00p1dz.
Both countries are amazing and there are a lot of great people in both.
Enjoy!
:-)
My name is Rosy too!! I visited New Zealand last year and I loved it. My first solo trip abroad that doesn’t include Mexico. I fell in love and can’t wait to go back!!!
Australia? You mean West New Zealand!!
...just kidding Ozzies
his diary
Nah pls annex us and let us have Jacinda Arden
Yeah, the "West Island". LOL!
his diary I’m not when I say the free border should be closed! Australia is tired of the criminals, the homelessness and the low economic family’s flooding Australia. Goff Whitlam was a socialist, and the worst politician that Australian produced. He signed off on a agreement in 1975 that gave New Zealand full access to Australia. To this day they get free medical with 10 other countries. Southeast Queensland is paying a premium on crime from accomodating New Zealand ppl, 80% prison population, homelessness and rental and home ownership affordability is affected bcse of it. Close the border! New Zealand is a complete different country.
@@biggils8894 you must be a fun at parties
@@thecheesebuffalo3298 ....haha.....SouthEast Queensland was/is/always will be a shit hole well before NZ'ers came, any state that gave us Pauline Hanson is fu*k-hole
