Comparing Every Ultralight Backpack Pa'lante Has Made

- Pa'lante Packs have been selling ultralight backpacks now for about 5 years, though Andy Bentz had been making them a bit longer for his own thru hikes. His Continental Divide Trail thru hike, as well as his John Muir Trail Fastest Known Time were both done using a custom backpack he had made for himself. John Zahorian later used one of his packs to hike the Appalachian Trail. The two teamed up to make some very thru hiker focused, ultralight focused, functionality, and efficiency focused backpacks! They named themselves Pa'lante Packs.
Today we look at all of the packs I own from them and a bit of my personal history with them, and why I've stuck by them. I had first gotten their Simple Pack when I was hiking the International Appalachian Trail, which I then went on to use for the Appalachian Trail, Benton Mackaye Trail, and Pinhoti Trail. I used their Cuben Simple Pack to set a speed record on the Florida Trail and finish up my Eastern Continental Trail thru hike. I used the V2(Lightweight Pack) on the Pacific Crest Trail, Sheltowee Trace Trail, and on the Florida Trail for a second time. The Joey I used on the Uinta Highline Trail as well as the Pacific Northwest Trail. And that brings us to now!
I look forward to using their Ultralight Backpack and updated Joey Pack on my future hikes! Both have been made to be lighter, more durable, and retain the same functionality and features of the old packs, with some extras thrown in as well!
I'm still good friends with both Andy and John today, and though I'm not sure it needs to be said, I have received most of these for free. Even still, I wouldn't use them, and wouldn't care if I didn't love them and think they are amazing.

I am so excited! I finally purchased the V2! I have been waiting for 2 years. I first wanted to make sure ultralight was me. That was over a year ago and then they were always out of stock. So after this year's hike and using a pack that was heavy (3 lbs) and that was way too big (I carried all my food for 200 miles with enough room to spare. Enough for 10 Rubik's Cubes, a Chess Board, and my stunt kite. Cheers!

Meowhikes has a great video comparing both Joey packs. I think he is the only one who has compared those two, specifically, so far. Great video Jupiter.
My brain made a weird free-association while watching this. In Amarillo TX, the art group _Ant Farm_ buried a bunch of 1950s Cadillacs in the ground as a way to show off the evolution of the tail fins. My brain felt that this video was a similar ode to Pa'lante packs, with them all lined up like that, outdoors against a log.
Some people like cars, some people like jewelry, sitting on a line of pa’lante packs though...that’s living

My gridstop V2 has done pretty well in some intense Alpine downpours. I do use a nylofume liner as a little insurance though 😉

20:29 I always thought it was better to keep your weight lower (and of course closer to your back).
but anyway being larger on top makes some sense since your bulkier items are typically lower weight per unit volume so if you put your food and gear at the bottom and your sleeping bag and puffy etc at the top that would give you a pretty good weight distribution.
Can I ask. Is the little hole at the bottom where you put in trash also rolled a couple of times to prevent trash from falling out or is it unnecessary when the hole is that small?
Interesting you show Arizona backdrops lol flagstaff? Just completed Tusyan to superior sobo about a month ago water was tight lots of cow ponds lol stopped at superior mental fatigue 4x40 days to start 32 average and the trail overgrowth-was getting scary. Saw one other thruhiker the whole time got tired of talking to cows love your videos I’m 59 years old this year and my friends say I should start an old mans version of your channel take care

P'alante is from contracting "para adelante", meaning "go ahead", maybe "g'head!"...it would be nice to know how they name their pack like this...Great video, as usual!

I have a 500 mile section hike I aim to do this summer in under 25 days. Trying to dial in my gear enough to fit one of these bad boys.
Do a video please about the American Discovery Trail please...I am interested in an expert's opinion of this trail....
any idea how much weight you could save by slicing off the hip belt of a newer v2? the xpac and dyneema mesh calls to me more than the robic / lycra, but 17oz seems a little heavy. wouldn't use the belt webbing so if I could get it down to like 14-15oz it would be perfect
Might be able to get it down to 15.5 or so but it's hard to say. Ultimately it's nice to have, and my girlfriend enjoyed it this past year but I understand if you're trying to shave bits

Cheers. Can you tell me how much wider and thicker the shoulder straps are on the new Lightweight Pack as opposed to the old V2?
I don't have the newer one but if the UL pack is any reference I'd say nearly twice as wide as the prototype V2 you see in the video

Has the lack of waterproofing been a huge issue with just a pack liner? I can't fit my 0deg EE quilt in its stuff sack so I plan to ditch the stuff sack. I'm worried that a pack liner it's not enough protection.
I have never once had a problem with just a pack liner. It essentially acts as a giant waterproof stuff sack, and so long as you replace it every blue moon or so it is good!

Solid gear for sure. I still think they missed the mark regarding some details that, to me is a major oversight. For example ; on Joey II.....the sternum straps have no elastic or give in them. Why would you not do this?? Almost ever other pack I’ve owned has this simple yet crucial feature. IMO, it compromises the comfort of the harness system. Also, the sternum straps themselves are super short. Again, small oversight but why?? I’m a skinny dude so I know it would be an issues for others as well. Given the running very style of Joey harness, the sternum straps are key in comfort. In my experience if you don’t use the sternum straps, the soft mesh of the shoulder straps rolls inward.
For a refined pack that has so much going for it, it’s a little confusing as to how this could be missed..especially at these price points. But what do I know?!
For any long distance hiker, these small details become larger details over time..I still dig their products though!
I'll definitely engineer it into my future pack, once they're available, which is never. x'D

Great video! That's a lot of packs! I've yet to try one of these since I still prefer a framed option, but I've always been curious. One question: Is John Z still around? Is he still with Palante?

Great packs, but production is frustrating. Months of waiting; on their email notification list; never get notified in time; always sold out.

The real question is, how do you fit them all in your van...Storage unit would be my guess, but, then again, you are pretty hard core...LOL..Thanx
They all fit fine in my big gear bin in the van, but I think I am going to send a couple of them to a friend for storage since I don't need this many beyond filming something like this.

Is it necessary to carry a bear canister if you sleep with your food and guard it with your life?
Some places require it, in which case definitely yes carry one. Otherwise I don't think I'd use one of I didn't need to. Maybe grizzly country but I can't speak on that well enough
@@JupiterHikes I can't trust the loksak, I ripped it in one day and I was being careful with it. I'm trying to find a replacement, so I'm going to submerge air-filled bags of various make and see what holds air. Do you have any other suggestions for odor-resistant containers?
I tested a few bags and they all released air underwater. However, I was able to use a hot knife to seal the ends of the zippers on a double-zipper Ikea bag and that bag now holds a lot of pressure before leaking. I will use those over the loksak now and they are wayyy cheaper.

I can't downvote this because it's Jupiter but fuck Pa'lante and their FOMO business model. There's far too many other cottage companies out here making quality packs and you don't have to continuously stalk their social media sites just to earn the privilege to MAYBE purchase one of their products (if you're fast enough with that credit card). The number of their products that wind up on ULgeartrade is a testament to their overhype. Hard pass.
