Tahoe Rim Trail - 7.2lb Thru Hike Gear List
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 25 июл 2021
- 170 miles walking around Lake Tahoe on the Tahoe Rim Trail... In super ultralight fashion! As I am only carrying 4.5lbs of backpacking gear, while the rest of my pack weight comes from my camera kit. I think a shorter trail like this is a great opportunity to carry very little, to dial in gear specifically for weather, and to try new things. Afterall this trip will only take me about 5 days, so I can really pair things down to the exact conditions I'll face, without having to carry a lot of the gear I normally would for a longer trip with more variables.

Of note I am leaving my puffy jacket at home and only carrying a Kuiu fleece, I am leaving my rain jacket at home if the weather holds up and only carrying a Montbell wind jacket, I am carrying a 30 degree enlightened equipment enigma quilt, I am testing out a new peak designs camera clip to try and find the ultimate way to carry a big bulky camera during thru hikes. I am leaving my wind pants at home, I am leaving my tripod at home. I am trying some new ombraz sunglasses, some new grip6 socks, a new camera lens. In general, I am trying a lot of things! And we will see how this goes.
I hear of problems with bears around lake tahoe, I hear of problems with water availability, long water carries, or dry stretches. But I am confident in my 11,000 miles of hiking long distance trails in a very minimalist and ultralight way to be fine.
Since completing the Arizona Trail this spring I have been itching to get out and do another long hike again, so here I am! After this I may do more trails in the area, and later this fall I plan on doing the colorado trail. So here's to another thru hike, I hope you enjoy!

There's certainly more than a few fires in the area so I'll keep watching that before I start but so far things look good! If not, I'll just drive somewhere else and do something else 🙂
Its currently raining in tahoe right now
Just returned from The TRT. Had to get off because of the smoke. I would postpone the trip until the smoke is gone. I felt like I smoked a pack of cigarettes in my overnight 30 miles on the trail.
Chance of rain on W
Hiking with an N95 may not be a bad idea if you end up going for it. For a little extra weight that could totally be a life saver.
@@gillonblank smokes gone today
I just finished the TRT! It’s beautiful!! My first backpacking trip. Partly inspired by your videos. Thank you:)
Oh wonderful! I'm planning on doing this hike next year. I'm looking forward to seeing your journey! Thank you in advance for sharing.
Another great video Jupiter. You really inspire me to be more minimalist on the trail. Thank you.
I love seeing these videos! At times I think that I can’t cut in any areas or improve in any areas without spending a bunch of money but you definitely give inspiration of what can be improved with little to no money and just by being knowledgeable about the area and conditions. Hope you have an awesome trip!
Jupiter excellent video Sir. While I may never do a major thru hike I’m always intrigued by the planning and gear choices and I live a bit vicariously through your videos. Thanks and good luck.
You constantly serve as a reminder that life is simpler than it seems. Love your videos. Thank you for making them. 😃
All of us out there were happy to know you were on the trail. I went counter clockwise and passed so many hikers who either met you or were hoping they’d cross your path. Happy Trails Jupiter. I’m so happy to have shared that beautiful trail with you.
P.S. you hike super fast. 30 miles a day is no joke!
Thank you for making those videos! It's helpful for people getting into long distance hiking like me. I just completed a 5 week hike and realized a 13lbs base weight with a week of food is too heavy for me. My goal is now a 7lbs base weight for the next one 😊
Thanks for sharing the list. You've got an amazing gear set; you are the man when it comes to light-weight packing. When it comes to paring down just a bit more, I ask myself, "what would Jupiter do?" Have a great hike!
Jupiter, I always laugh before the video when you do the gear load out of a hike. I laugh because I know it is going to be super light and I think how can he talk so long about the small amount of gear. However, of all the gear load outs I love yours the best. You always give so much explanation or thought of why you selected that piece of gear. As I age my base weight is lowering and I always pick something up from you had to reduce it further safely and smartly. Thank you for putting this content together for us. Happy Hiking!
Jupiter always personable and objective. Smart, knowledgeable guy for sure.
Happy Trails, looking forward to seeing your trip!
Looking forward to see the hiking videos. Great gear video as well. Have a great hike!
Looking forward to your trip footage, I enjoyed my trip in 19'... super heavy snow year. The big seki loop would be a cool idea too. An amazing area to frolic. And you're right, the shorter trips are all I can personally manage now with a family, and responsibilities... but I'm very thankful to have time enough to do these size trips. Enjoy.
Enjoy the hike brother, can’t wait to go on the journey with you. Safe travels my man
Great information! I'm hoping to hike the TRT this summer myself so I especially appreciate your insights.
I'll be hiking the TRT with you in spirit, Jupe. I had planned on going this year with my family but my eating disorder has claimed a lot of my mobility. I'm getting better, but no hiking this year😔
Hike the good hike, man. ❤
Oh no... I’m sorry to hear that glad you’re getting better. Hope to see you out on the trail soon you never know. Have a good day.
I’m excited to see you hike this trail. I’ve been working through it a section at a time. Hope the afternoon thunderstorms are gentle on you. Concerned about your food storage, hope you hang it and don’t use it as a pillow. As far as water goes, well, you drink anything so I’m not even worried other than for availability. Happy Trails.
Hey dude! Thanks for sharing your gear load out for the upcoming trip, I always love seeing what other people are bringing. I enjoyed your thoughts on Tribalism on the podcast you did, great stuff. Team Jupiter! Haha. Love the vibes man. Have fun out there!
Love your content Jupiter. Clear, thorough, insightful essentialism! One possible substitution to consider would be to swap out that Aukey charger for 2 30g Anker Nano. Main issue is that they would be USB C only but together would drop about 40g, and could supply 20w each. I just charged up my Nitecore last night with one and it’s crazy fast via USB C. I use a micro USB adapter. Good luck!
I love how much of your gear is the cheapest option available. (That isn't for everyone but you've found what works for you.) You only spend the "big dollars" on gear that requires it to be ultralight. That 1/8" pad always cracks me up. Nice video.
Thanks for taking us along your trips. I'd be interested in what exactly you eat in a day going completely container-less. . Could you make a video on that before you leave?
Looking fwd to your video(s) on this hike. It's on the bucket list.
Hell yeah, hope the smoke from the fires clear up for you. I was just out at desolation wilderness last week for a quick 1 night trip and smoke rolled in and made me leave early. I decided I'll just try and plan a tahoe rim trail hike next year earlier in the season to try and avoid fires. I met John Zahorian out there back in June too
Whaaaaaat!? Didn't know you were a disc golfer and didn't know Grip6 made socks, "they support disc golf" got a huge smile out of me!
Thanks for sharing your gear list! Its always interesting to see what the others carry around! ;-) Greetings from Germany Renate and Olaf (Trackbreaker)
you always look happy , Full of energy !
Hope you enjoy the meadows... hit them sunrise/sunset for maximum beauty! And fingers crossed you can get some clear, smoke-free skies!
Love your base weight videos. Just did a three day hike with snow gear and counting in the weight of my canister stove. Came out to 158.7 ounces. You always seem to not attempt to hide any weight like a lot of the other RUclips hikers do.
For the capture clip, I've own one for a few months and here's my advice: get yourself a peak design screw-on plate and a tripod with a compatible lever that latches on said plate. This way you don't have to screw-unscrew every time you want to get a shot (trust me you'll end up not filming). All you have to do is clip the camera on your shoulder strap, unclip it (all can be done one-handed) and then clip it on your tripod. Sure you'll add a couple of ounces but you'll gain time and efficiency, a very good trade off in my opinion.
Watch out man, the day's gonna' come when you'll need to bump up to a 1/4" ccf.
Hey Jupe, you can slap the arca style mount that comes on your Oben tripod on to the Pedco tripod to allow for quick attach/detach. It adds some weight, but works well (and fast)
Got the peloton off ur rec when u first reviewed. Absolutely love. Been all over even up Kilimanjaro 🤓
You have just as much trouble saying the name and description as I do for the 1/8th inch thick ccf pad. I do cringe but am also slightly intrigued by sleeping on the pad...
Just finished a thru of trt earlier this month. Views are breathtaking and abundant. Hikers here are super friendly. Miss it already. Have fun!
@jupiterhikes are you not worried about the mosquitoes when hiking/cowboy camping?
Those little flashlights are great
I am gonna be in the Desolation Wilderness next week for a couple day backpacking trip hope to see you there!
Just finished a thru hike of the TRT clockwise from Tahoe City - beautiful trail, enjoy! Definitely recommend side trips to summit Mt. Rose, Freel Peak, and to swim in Marlette Lake.
Love the disc golf tee pad !!
What an epic setup!
In regards to your tripod, you van get very small, very light quick release clips which will screw onto the tripod and then be able to clip on the peak design style base plate. I think they use the arca swiss style. The simple small ones are pretty cheap on eBay/amazon
Looking forward to your trip videos
Suunto makes great compasses! I live few km away of the HQ. Btw. It is pronounced soon-tow. Suunto is taken from finnish word Suunta, which means direction. They started making compasses 1935 and was very important for finnish defence forces during world wars.
Watson Lake, north of Tahoe City, is pretty gross. Right before it, to the left of the gravel road, there's a spring popping up to a mini pool. It was the best water ever.
I just finished the TRT on 7/22. Would have been really cool to see you out there. Have a great time!
Awesome Jup! Can't wait to see your next upload!
I'll be on the TRT in about 4 weeks. Looking forward to you vids to get an idea of trail conditions.
Great Advice on what you need, thanks for sharing
Love this, I'm carrying a film studio and car camping rig on me back 🤦♂️ You're an inspiration dude. (Maybe I don''t really need that second gimble 😂)
Just finished the TRT on 7/27/21 I hope you have the best time! Big water carries FYI. Especially tahoe city going CW to well after Spooner TH. Just FYI! Gut hooks app was amazing!.
The mini Duncan yo-yo is the missing link for most backpackers. Glad that you are properly equipped. Enjoy the Rim Trail!
Looking forward to this hike! Its on my to do list !
The TRT is great! (I also love my Peak Designs Clip)
There's a very accessible grocery store at Tahoe City, and the trail basically just goes right next to it. It might be worth planning on a quick resupply just to save a couple days worth of food if you start at South Lake Tahoe.
Last year, when I did the TRT there was a taco truck just a ways east of the grocery. Damn did that hit the spot!
Good stuff man! I have been trying to figure out the most convenient way to carry my camera (Sony RX100) on longer hikes as well, namely so I can keep the Pedco ultra pod on it and still have it outside my pack so that I don’t get “lazy” about pulling it out of a pouch, etc. it’s definitely an experimentation process! Have a blast on this hike and thanks for sharing it! -Hungry Cat
I am watching your videos from Finland. Cheers!
Awesome dude! Have a great hike. Hoping you have better camera luck than you did on the AZT! One gear fail I just had on the JMT was that in using the PD clip, I kept putting my camera on the ground during breaks, and apparently dirt can get into the sensor that way-leading to black dots in my images and me having to hike out to get rid of my camera. I’m sure you are already thinking of this, but be extra careful with your camera so that this doesn’t happen to you 🙏🏾
I’m impressed you don’t know what type of phone you have 😂 I love seeing so few heck’s given about it
Hi Jupiter! Thank you for so many information in your videos, I really like it and they inspired me a lot. I'm interested in coldsoaking. Can you tell sometime, what you generally eat on a trip?
looking forward ti the vids of the hike!
just did a section of that hike. lots of people getting off trail right now due to all the smoke from all the fires and lots of water carries due to lack of water sources on most of it. Hopefully you get lucky with the smoke and able to complete it. be safe and enjoy the views if you get some.
I just got done thru hiking it. Its amazing.
Very well explained!
The peak design is great for carrying the camera along.
What I use to be able to both have on the shoulder strap and on the UL tripod is the little arca style base plate adapter (model name on amazon: Mini Clamp DAC-25 for $17) weighing 37grams. This way the camera can be quickly switched from being on the shoulder to clamped on the tripod.
Happy trails on the Tahoe rim trail!
Interesting video and we’ll done. I’ll be interested in how the Peak camera clip works.
If you like the Peak Design shoulder clip, also check out the Polar Pro Traverse strap mount. Wider for those straps, and a twist locking clip.
Oi! missed this. One of your greatest gear lists so far 😎 You'll need a small 'arca swiss' clamp on the ultrapod if you want to use it together with the capture clip
If you have time, Zephyr Cove and Bijou Park are two great disc golf courses. Enjoy your TRT hike. It’s beautiful!
Stoked your headed to these neck of the woods!
I’m curious, what’s your start date and which direction do you plan on traveling?
Enjoy and have fun, thanks for all your videos!
Instantly became a supporter for life when you mentioned you like disc golf and appreciate what grip 6 does in that space. I know personally those are some of my biggest passions: disc golf and backpacking. Possible video idea for the future: backpacking trip mixed in with some rounds of disc golf at various courses nearby???
I played three rounds just today! It is my thing away from hiking. Mostly something I do while traveling between trails or whatnot, but I did sneak a round in while on the PCT, and many shortly after before flying home
@@JupiterHikes 3 rounds just today?! Let's go! Glad to hear you're able to get some rounds in between all the miles. Disc golf is the best, I try to get out and huck about once a week! I'd love to play some rounds in AZ one day if you got any recommendations on courses. Happy trailblazing brotha 🤙🏼
@@mrstickybunnz northern az is the place, can't go wrong with any of the courses in Flagstaff. Show low and pinetop also have some good ones
You can pick up a Arca Swiss plate clamp that screws on to your small tripod. Works with the Peak Design plate..
I thought you were going to say you weren't going to eat on this trip lol. Cheers and enjoy!
TRT is going to be my first "long trail" since my Philmont trek in high school. You are spot on about getting time off for work for it and since I live in the Bay Area it's a no brainer. Looking forward to seeing you crush it! My plan would be to visit a brewery on mine so I'm budgeting a week and a half for my trek.
Why not use the ombraz protector case that came with the glasses to protect and clean your glasses (with the attached microfiber cloth inside) instead of a separate case and microfiber cloth? Is the weight difference large enough to carry two separate lighter pieces?
Good luck!!
Awesome vid once again! Thanks for putting in the time so that us lesser experienced can learn. Question....in the spirit of minimalism, why not just use the compass on your phone?
Good Luck.....enjoy
Hey Joe how you doing? Love your videos my families one of the 1st pioneers in This state is funny they settled all along the railroad tracks Now most only thing left is the cemeteries. One of the 1st town they settled in was called Boyette they got their supplies from the railroad from Plant City. There's not left of boyette
Hope you have a good time 😊
Sweet little light. Ordered one.
A lawn and leaf bag makes a great rain poncho for that unexpected downpour, and the weight is a fraction of an ounce. Just cut a hole big enough for your head to stick through and it will keep you from getting soaked.
My backpack as a sophomore in high school was bigger and heavier. Craziness!!
Ooh, capture clip on running straps. Don't think I've seen that before
You can put a small bowtie quick release on your tripod to work with the peak designs mount.
Offt, nice work sneaking the metric system in there
I enjoyed the video. I did the TRT 2 weeks ago in 8 days. My base weight was 15. I don't think I could get by with what you are bringing, but you gave me some good ideas on what I could possibly remove on my next thru-hike. You didn't mention water filtration. Not sure what your plan is for that. Overall, have fun and good luck.
He’s mentioned in previous videos that he doesn’t really filter his water. I guess it works for him but it’s certainly not for everyone.
@@Tmv21395 In some older videos he carried a Sawyer, Jupiter must have made the choice specific to this trail. I hiked the Sierras last year without a filter, but only because I left it (and my cnoc) at a water source. I'll be interested when he comes out with his full PCT gear list.
Looking forward to the videos. Unfortunately, for example the dixie fire is close and I wonder how bad the smoke will be in the area. Work related cancer is a problem with wildland firefighting since these brave firefighters work long shifts in smoke and often chemicals are in the smoke mix, once fire reaches the WUI. I wonder if there are suitable masks one can wear the entire day, while hiking longer miles, like somehow on your level.
Ombraz are pretty solid for backpacking Jupiter. I've been using them for a few years now and I haven't found a reason yet to try something new. 😎
Did the TRT last summer. My tent was circled by a mountain lion one night on the NV side, just a bit south of Spooner. Watch out for the wildlife!
You're the third person I've heard of that had a mountain lion outside their tent. The other two were PCT hikers and I think it was 2018. One happened to a girl in the southern Sierra, the other was closer to Tahoe. In all three cases--yours included--the cats didn't attempt to get into the tent. Interesting.
@@rkatrails They only go for cowboy campers...😬
Just got back yesterday from Tahoe. Super smokey with the fire going on. It was the mid 80s in the day, low 50s at night. I drove around the whole lake and you can't see across it. I decided to postpone my TRT thru hike to next year. If you need anything let me know. It's a 4-5 hour drive to Tahoe for me.
Thanks for sharing man
Jupiter ... for your fleece jacket, I bet you could take it to a local seamstress / tailor and they could add a couple of pockets for you. Black or grey would look just fine.
Hello Jupiter !
Regarding your peakdesign issue with the tripod, you can add an adapter on the top of the tripod to get a quick release system. Basically you just clip your camera on top of the tripod and you are good to go. Just check "arca swiss plate" on amazon ;)
Really interested in a food list for a hike like this
Welcome to the T.R.T. sir... enjoy!
Hey Jupiter, how often do you need to charge your RovyVon flashlight? Are you planning on doing any night hiking? Thanks for sharing, this gear list is badass, as always!
Looks like a beautiful trail. Being from the UK I'm dead jealous you don't need to pack for all weathers! Hope it goes well. Interested to hear what you are eating - lots of bars? Are you intending on resupplying?
Your gear setup is so helpful and wished I’d found this 5yrs ago! But I question why you feel impelled to do 30 miles a day? I did part of the TRT last year and spent 5 leisurely days going from Echo Lakes to the Velmas and down to Emerald Bay. Spent a day and nite at Lake of the Woods because I had just a beautiful camp site and the views were amazing . The next day made it to only Aloha Lake and spent all afternoon swimming because it’s perhaps the most incredible swimming hole in Northern California. Went all the way to Middle Velma Lake next day and had such a spectacular camp site spent 2 nites there. Yet these would all be places you just breezed by in your need to get to the finish line eating the most base food all the way because ‘sustenance’
So no bear can then @JupiterHikes? I've heard a lot of noise about bears in Desolation, wondering if anything had changed since I hiked the PCT in 2017. Just decided to pull the trigger on this trail for early July. Love your vids ✌️
I know you mentioned sight selection for camps is really important in order to make your sleep and shelter work. But after watching all your videos and seeing you talk about this sleeping pad I gotta know, do you sleep mostly on your side or your back or your stomach. I just cant get my head around it, need to try it I guess!
Wow, i would have been hiking with ya if i didn't switch to a CT hike last minute!
Quck tip. a lot of cameras let you charge the battery in the camera, just plug a USB cable into it. Might save you taking a charger or be able to charge two batteries at once.
You're a disc golfer!!!!!!! Nice. haha
Starting the trail tomorrow. Smoke and thunderstorms in the forecast. Should be fun.
I was just up there and it seemed like for the most part the smoke was blowing east, but I know the smoke pattern probably changes daily. Better than I thought it would be though. Definitely looks like some weather coming in, Have fun, you're gonna have an amazing trip regardless, dude
