Hiking 170 Miles in 5 Days on the Tahoe Rim Trail

- The largest alpine lake in the United States, more than 2 million years old, sitting more than a mile above see level... And I'm walking around it! My goal is the 170 mile Tahoe Rim Trail in just 5 days, which averages out to more than 30 miles per day. I wasn't putting a label on it, but I guess I'm fastpacking this trail. Though really you could say I fast pack every trail! I like to think that I'm going for a speed record or fastest known time, and that I'm just really bad at it. Either way this is how I like to hike and do long distance trails. Fast and light.
For this thru hike, excluding my camera gear my baseweight is super ultralight, under 5lbs total for my gear. I feel I have everything I need to stay comfortable and safe too! Check out my gear list down below if you're interested. My shelter is a zpacks dyneema composite fabric tarp, I am carrying a kuiu fleece jacket, enlightened equipment 30 degree enigma quilt, palante packs 24L joey backpack, and a bunch of other stuff worth looking into!
I think given the relative short distance of this trail, I am able to go even lighter than I normally would. In advance to starting I can nearly predict what the weather will be like for the 5 days, so I can choose my gear more wisely, and carry a more minimal kit.
The Tahoe Rim Trail I think would be the perfect shakedown hike for anyone looking to get into thru hiking, or especially those who are interested in doing the Pacific Crest Trail. It will teach you a lot about your gear, your body, what you like, and how you deal with problems when they arise. And the trail is short enough that you could travel to do it in a vacation away from work. It isn't the hardest trail in the world, but there is a lot to learn out here and I highly recommend it.
Since completing the Arizona Trail this spring I have been itching to get out and do another long hike again, so here I am! Later this fall I plan on doing the Long Trail in Vermont. So here's to another thru hike, I hope you enjoy!

You strike me as probably the most chill and relatable hiker influencers out there. Thanks for this great video.
11:15 ... I grimaced when you took that slide. But kudos for you leaving it in & showing that even a seasoned veteran isn't perfect. It makes you even more relatable.
I think in my Sheltowee Trace videos there was a section that was really muddy and I took quite a few falls! I almost took it out, but thought if nothing else it's funny to watch someone fall(so long as they're ok)
@@JupiterHikes I remember reading your text blog back when you were first doing the AT, I think I remember you saying you jumped over a log in the first 100 miles or so and turned your ankle? Seems so long ago now, happy to see you moved into longer video/editing/narration. Cheers
Great stuff, Jupiter! Love your quote near the end, "being out here is always better than not being out here". Ain't that the truth, my friend!!
Great video, Jupiter. I was going to do that hike in 2020 but COVID destroyed my trip from here in Florida that year. I met you first at Lands End in Canada where you were beginning your hike to Key West, and again at the base of Old Blue Mountain in Maine when you arrived there. You have been an inspiration to this 77-year-old man who also loves the outdoors. Thank you for your videos. Keep smiling!
Woah! I remember very well meeting you at those two spots! It was very cool to see you more than a month and 1,000 miles later. I hope you get out on the Tahoe Rim Trail sooner than later! Or of course many other wonderful trails in that 170 mile range around the country
It is a great point that it's an awesome warm up, or training hike, for the PCT. I did it back in 2011, after the PCT and had exactly the same thought. I'm not sure why some hikers talk disparagingly about it, could have something to do with the fact that much of it's open to bikes, especially on the Eastern side, but I never had much of an issue with bikes.....
Oh, to be young again. Took me two weeks back in 2021. I went CCW as well. I know a lot of folks go CW, but as a former thru hiker, I wanted to cross paths with that year's crop of hikers in the Desolation Wilderness. Maybe it was because my thru hike was in 1977, or the fact I was going the opposite direction, but I had very little recollection of the PCT portion of the TRT.
Just finished my 9 days on the TRT. You made the 5 days look so easy!
thx for this video, you're a great role model, I love your attitude towards constant learning through reflection; it seems to come naturally to you, that's beautiful
Thank you for taking us along. Definitely going to add it to my trails I need to do.
Jezus. With content like this how can you have 'only' 46k subscribers. You're one of my favourite YT channels to follow and my heart skips a beat every time something new pops up. Great work and keep it coming! greets from The Netherlands
I think if I posted more often, but lower quality stuff I would grow quicker. It's a trade I suppose. I just do what I enjoy, and what I think others would enjoy or may find helpful. Sometimes maybe lower quality but getting the information out there would be better, I don't know
@@JupiterHikes if you ask me: please stick to this high level of content :) Nevertheless it would be a great reward for your efforts if your channel would grow as it is now. Keep on keeping on!
@@TheBonswah Agree, the content is great, but at the same time it's fairly obvious that the people with a lot of subscribers get them by posting (good content) more often. I guess it depends on what Jupiter want to achieve with the channel. As long as number of subscribers and generated income aren't important then he's doing great.
If he want to grow the channel then creating more content is the key. Take this video, it's 15 minutes for five days. It's a beautiful area and just adding five minutes of video would have created two 10+ minutes videos. Many hiker-RUclipsrs would have stretched it to one video per day. Maybe too much, but getting two videos out in stead of one with the same quality wouldn't be difficult.
you inspires me to want to go hiking.
I really look forward to all of your videos. Your style of hiking and humble attitude towards it is very inspiring to me. Thanks for sharing Jupiter.
You just seem like the nicest person. I love watching the videos. Thank you!
nice work jupiter
I love how you mention "using this to get ready for the pct" because I'm planning on using the TRT and much shorter LCT to do that
The beauty of the trail, the insight you provided, your creativity, the constant reflection on what you can improve on while hiking those kind of miles is an incredible job well done. Happy Hiking!!
Spectacular hike. Thanks for posting
This is my neck of the woods. I finished section hiking it last year. Glad you got to experience the beauty of the TRT.
Nice one again Jupiter. Great to see you out there again and enjoying yourself.
I really enjoyed this! Thank you for sharing.
Great video!!! I’ve got my eyes on some Reno living.
Great views, keep on hiking!
I love your appreciation for nature and the lessons still learned on each trail. Means a lot coming from someone who hiked so much and so far.
Thank you for filming that. Beautiful!!
Beautiful as always. Thanks for taking us along your journey!
Love your upbeat attitude man, rock on
Cool, I enjoyed it… Looks like you did it just at the right time, before those unbelievable fires, crazy… Was good to see you out again… Take Care 🎅🏻🏴☠️🏔🥏
I love how you put your videos together to both tell a story and showcase the beauty of the area! I hadn’t heard of the Tahoe rim trail either, but now I’m thinking I’ll have to make it out there sometime. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Never a dull video, Jupiter! I enjoy every single one.
Love this one! I like the 'show the whole trail in one video' concept. I'm sure it's easy with shorter hikes but you could have split this into 5 videos and I appreciate that you didn't! Give us just enough to peak our interest but leave as much as possible for us to find for ourselves
Absolutely beautiful, Jupiter! Outstanding presentation.
Glad you made it out before all the fire closures. I finished the TRT at Echo lake the day the Caldor fire started. So sad to know that TH is gone now.
Great video with beautiful color and shots! I loved your commentary. I'm hoping to hike the TRT this summer!
Great video! Looks like a super fun hike.
Loved this! I just finished too. We both went counter clockwise but I started in Tahoe City. Can’t wait to edit my own version of this trail.
Hello from New Mexico awesome beautiful scenery 😀 enjoy
Glad to see that the current fire did not mess with your hike. I got screwed with the fire... was supposed to start the day before they closed the trail. Next year I guess.
I’ve been section hiking this this summer!! amazing!! preparing for the pct!! great video!!!
JupiterHikes the snake Whisper, that was a big one, also your new camera is spot on.
Awesome Jupiter! I did a small section of the the TRT through the TRTA. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is wonderful. So many people volunteer their time and give back to the trail. I learned so much about the TRT. It so close to home and it’s now a part of me. Can’t wait to do some trail maintenance next summer! Thank for sharing!
Incredible video as always, Jupiter! Thank you!
Been looking forward to this video since you made the announcement. Thanks again Jupiter, I've spent August cooped up inside mostly because of fires and COVID risk, but a moment or two of shared walking sure helps.
dang thats one beautiful trail, definitely will get out there sometime
Amazing video! I love your stuff dude. Very inspiring
Very nice video JH. Thank you.
Jumping on the CT for 141mi in 5 days this September. This helps with the mindset. Enjoying the work you put out Jupiter-thx man!
That's a crazy pace, you are an athlete! Respect!
Your comment about the TRT being a good prep hike for PCT inspired a thought. I’d love to do a long thru hike, but family commitment is in the forefront for my foreseeable future. At my age, I never know what will happen next. But my thoughts were inspired by you in that although even a “short” hike like the JMT may cause me to be gone too long, the TRT would not. Then I thought I could round it out with the Collegiate Peaks loop in CO and the Northville Placid Trail here in NY. Kinda like the poor mans triple crown so to speak. Thanks! Always a pleasure watching your videos!
Absolutely! I think it's awesome for those who can do the gigantic thru hikes but it's just not possible for most people with family and career. Some of the best times I've had were on the sub 300 mile trips and I wish there was more focus on those sometimes. I think partly that's why I like to do them, to maybe bring more attention. You can and will have an amazing journey on all those you mentioned and I hope you do!
@@JupiterHikes another great sub 300-mile trip is the Tuscarora trail on the east coast its the first thru hike i have on my list
Love the shorter (In miles) trail videos you do man.
I keep rewatching your Ocean To Lake videos. Going out there this winter for the first time and am super pumped.
Great video brother, the scenery was absolutely beautiful. Looks like you had amazing weather as well.
Nice man I love this. Looks a real feasible trail to come over to from the UK from and not need an excessive amount of time to do it in.
Awesome trip! Thanks so much for sharing. 👍🏼🙏🏼
Thanks so much for this video! I'm planning to do it this coming summer. Cheers! - Chica
Stunning hike, thanks for bringing us along
NERDING out that my favorite humble hiker is hitting my local trail and even started from where I work! (Heavenly ski resort)! Glad you enjoyed it and didn’t seem to be much smoke!
Woah man thats awesome! Heavenly is so good and kind for letting people park there. I'd love to come back again sometime and do it again
I have never seen a rattlesnake up that high, I heard they might be there, but it different actually that one. I hope you went up Freel Peak on your last day, the highest in the area and had great views. I sectioned hiked and ran, you make it look so easy to backpack it with that tiny pack.
U seem to have so many nice trails in the US. This one seems very nice. Tempted.
Thanks for showing the pretty rattlesnake and not freaking out or exaggerating the encounter
Hi Jupiter, your hiking video makes me to feel that TRT is too easy and quick but in reality it was a big challenge to me to through hike all the TRT trails. :) Thanks again for your video.
It is a great challenge! And a wonderful trail to learn new things on
some of your best footage man! I hope i can get out there this october!!
I guess we know who we will be filling next year on the PCT. can’t wait !
Loved seeing your perspective on a trail so close to my home. I’ve section hiked the whole loop a dozen times or so. Two attempts at thru hiking it were side lined by injury. I planned on hiking the full loop this month, but in the timeframe I’d set aside, the wildfires forced most of the trail to be closed. Maybe next year!
It’s great to see you do another trail Koodo’s but what about showing us a few camp set ups and what you ate on the trail since it was such a light packcarry
Awesome video! I always though the Tahoe Trail was the precursor tp the PCT. I also think the Foothills Trail is the same for the AT. I plan on doing the Foothills Trail in the fall. Thanks Jupiter! I miss my western beauties.
I so appreciate your presentation of thru hiking. Your openness in past videos about thru hikes you haven't completed for various reasons made it easier to not feel like a failure when I made the decision to cut a hike short. And it's nice to see that even Jupiter still falls down sometimes, lol🤣
Dang Jupiter. Your videos are always so interesting, and objective and the photography is out of this world.. I learn so much with each and everyone. I am also going say mesmerizing : "to hold the complete attention of . . . "
Thanks for taking us along on your grand adventures. Though many times only vicariously for this old guy.
This was a lot of fun rewatching your adventure. Just think how many miles you gone from when you originally posted this 2 years ago!
About 5,000 since then!
@@JupiterHikes awesome!
34 miles per day. Damn man I'd struggle to do that in flat AF Ohio. You are a beast!
Your thoughts on the TRT being good prep for the PCT is exactly how I feel about the long trail being great prep for the AT (or how you feel about the Ocean to Lake trail for the FT!)
Great video - keep it up! Hope to get myself a painting of yours someday and there are some great looking subjects throughout this video!
couldn't help reading trt as testosterone replacement therapy 😂
Great video! Such a beautiful trail!
Love your videos. Where did you begin the TRT? Did you use a permit or just hike through that portion without camping? Thanks for all the info!
A friend and I talked just yesterday about how “little mistakes” are the best. It’s like “whew, at least it wasn’t a big one”
I think this is at least the 4th time I've watched this through. It's one of a handful that sold me on making the TRT my adventure for the summer, and my first >50mi thru-hike! I'm recognizing more of the scenery as I research, especially now that I've nailed down my rough camp locations and my start/stop (KBS, CCW).
Was going to push for 6 days but decided to build in some slack and even a full extra day in Deso Wilderness off-TRT, to span the week between my 🎂-day and the 4th, 8 days. SLT fireworks on-trail should be sick, weather permitting! Still working on the meal plan but intending to go unsupported (except using trash cans and artificial water sources). Just over a month to go...
Next year maybe SHR? Or JMT if I don't feel ready to go off-trail.
After a near-O through TC and a zero off-trail around Fontanillis I bailed at Echo on day 9 in '22 due to injury and running out of time. (And my cat in his final days alone at the vet.) 2023's big trip was the YHR - north loop, which was on another level. Gates of the Arctic in AK is the big one this year, but I feel like I have unfinished business in Tahoe, so I'm going to hit it again, CW this time, as soon as the snow clears. Going in with a lot more experience and maybe even a little wisdom this time.
Amazing hike...been watching since your east continental coast video. Thank you for continuing to document your travels. Do you think someone could do this with a hammock setup?
Absolutely could be done with a hammock! And very comfortably too! There weren't any sections totally void of trees so you'd be able to set up anywhere
The west side of the lake definitely has it's own vibe
Beautiful pika footage 😍
Thanks for sharing and capturing the beauty of the trails! Sad about the recent wildfires and closures in the Tahoe area right now :(
When did you do this? I hike 3 sections this June/July and fires have been an issue. Your trip is beautiful!
Very end of july to the beginning of august. Smoke was definitely a concern but I got lucky with mostly clear skies and haze in the distance. I'm sure earlier in the year, maybe May, would be a more ideal time. Though it could be a trade with mosquitoes in the spring
Watching your adventure and listening to you describe it, is always so beautiful and calming... thank you
"Systems checks" using a checklist before departing and again at the trailhead are helpful.
I’m doing the pct in 2025. I’ve never done a lot of backpacking as I don’t have anyone to go with and can’t drive. But I’ve been Looking into doing this trail next year.
Yeah boyyyyyy
Gorgeous rattlesnake piece!
Interested in what you use to protect your food from bears. Nothing listed in your kit list?
Beautiful!!
Awesome!!
Well put together as always ! Can i ask what shoes youve been wearing?
Awe man I was wearing Merrell Trail gloves here but I recently got Xero Mesa Trail shoes and I don't think I've ever liked a shoe more. More testing is needed no doubt!
Wow, 17 mile waterless carry at altitude in the desert! I'd be carrying 7-8 liters.
Not a desert
Thanks for sharing! Curious about the things you experimented with on this trail. Did you experiment with no cook/no coldsoak, and only eating ready to eat food?
Btw. on lighterpack it says the mini bic lighter is 85grams, which seems way too much for it :)
Fixed the lighter! Thanks! I experimented mostly with a new way to carry my camera, no cook system whatsoever, less clothing than usual, new socks, no fanny pack, the Joey backpack instead of the UL, and I'm sure some other things. But also I was super focused on my walking form as I progressed down the trail. Not that it's good form, but that I was trying to improve it and be mindful of it
@@JupiterHikes Nice, sounds like quite a few new things got tested :) Btw. I saw you had the peak design capture clip. I use it too, it gives a pretty quick access to the camera, though it can mess up the padding on the shoulder straps a bit... And I also have a small arca style mounting plate on the tripod for a quick switch from the camera being on the shoulder strap to mounting it on the tripod (I think the model of the mounting plate was DAC-25 Desmond on amazon). And also respect for being able to hike so many miles while filming. I feel like filming (or mostly setting up the shots) slows me down quite a bit, but it's part of the art :) Cheers!
Is this video shot in 4K? Is the 4K crop very noticeable when doing the vlog style shots?
For an area so wet, the Tahoe area mountains seem very dry and not much ground vegetation. Surprised about that.
It looks like your pack changed and your shoes changed throughout the video and I do not see the gear that one usually has when hiking even for 1 overnighter. Was this legit?
like ur chill man
Too bad the gear list video is longer than this video. I would have liked to see more footage of the area before it burns. Thanks for your time and efforts.
Congratulations on completing this spectaucular loop in just 5 days! 👏
Most of my backpacking has been in the Northeast. Next year I hope to hike the JMT with a walk-up permit because the ones in the lottery are almost impossible to get. I'm testing out my new ULA Circuit pack and BV500 thru the 100 Mile Wilderness in Sept. Wish me luck!
You're doing it right! Get out and test that stuff and see how it goes. Goodluck on the JMT, I think soon we will be trading places persay
No reason at all is the best reason to hike in any direction
Counter clock is the best on this trail!
Did you carry a bear canister?
god DAMN those fungi!!!
"Being out here is better than not being out here" nice..
