      @dalenhansen8040 -
      Boomer Sooner fan here. No one in the media ever talks about this, but if Caleb Williams would have stayed at OU he would have had a better college career. He still would have won the Heisman and we would definitely be undefeated and headed to the playoffs this year. Last year, instead of 6-7 we are at least 10-3. I get it though, LR recruited him and (in his mind) it was just too big of a risk.
      Also, isn’t it funny that the exact same thing applies to Spencer Rattler - he’s an afterthought nowadays. However, if he had stayed at OU he would have become a beloved hero (Jalen Hurts style) and definitely would have had a better career.

    The irony is that Lincoln Riley's crosstown rivals at UCLA just demonstrated that you *can* significantly upgrade a defense.... Not by hiring a "big name" defensive coordinator, but by hiring a young, hungry, up-and-coming NFL defensive position coach being groomed for a DC position, D'Anton Lynn, and giving him the building blocks for success. That includes quality players gotten through the portal, a team mentality rather a star mentality, and buy-in across the program.

My only real concern is how he will do in recruiting, since Chip Kelly has a history of pushing a lot of the HS recruiting duties off onto his coordinators and position coaches....preferring to focus more of his attention on the transfer portal... and recruiting is not something he' apt to have picked up in the NFL.

    You made an excellent point about him not recruiting well. There has been a battle between Lincoln and Oregon with Dan Lanning winning over some recruits for 24 cycle. Of course, you would think NOW, Dan Lannings phone is going to be ringing quite a bit in the coming days from potential recruits, or transfers from USC. Who wants to be in that environment? In the Spring, Oregon has (in a sense), done a Pick-6 on Lincoln Riley in his own backyard for talent from all over So-Cal. Dan is smiling all the way to the playoffs. I'm sure Gary Byrant Jr. (who transferred out in the Spring) is happy to be in Eugene, and not L.A. Guessing there will be freshman that will be looking elsewhere for next year.

    Lincoln Riley should return at least HALF of his inflated salary for this season because of his failure as Head football coach at USC. The Trojans paid him an obscene amount of money and failed to get a good return on their investment. THREE yards rushing for the Trojans vs. UCLA is unacceptable. Maybe USC should keep Riley - as the Quarterbacks coach. He clearly is in WAY over his head when it comes to the Head Coach position. When Ed Orgeron left years ago, I felt that USC had made a serious mistake by letting him go (Ed went on to win a National Championship as a Head coach for LSU since he left USC) - I still feel that USC should have kept Ed Orgeron. Maybe USC should have hired Dan Lanning instead of Riley. At least Lanning can beat Utah.

    Extremely interesting take... I vividly remember Mr Pate in early 2022 boldly stating that no one was going to try to do what Georgia did in 2021, play ball control football and rely heavily on a strong defense. That the high octane offenses would continue to be wave of the times. Finding a way to win on a consistent basis should be applauded no matter how it is done.

    I don't expect Riley to right the USC ship and compete for national championships, but he still has the opportunity to do it. He's the head coach of a major Power 5 football program. When he came to OU, his childhood friends said he was a genius who could have succeeded in any field he chose. Let him figure out how to be a CEO.

    • @BigTulsa
      @BigTulsa 9 месяцев назад +2

      See and that's the whole thing right there. Lincoln is a great leader of young men (his offense). But being a head coach means you need to learn how to be a leader of not just young men that play for you, but you have to be a leader of your leaders (individual coaches). He may still be working on that skillset, but he needs to get there quickly. He's had six full seasons of OJT now.

    James Franklin needs to go too. He's been absolutely nothing but average at Penn State. They are not a top 10 program. They literally only play 2 teams a year that are good and they lose to them (Michigan and Ohio State). In the SEC they lose 5 plus games a year. That program has so much potential and should be in the playoffs from time to time.

    USC fan here; Riley's seat is warm, like a seat heater that has been on too long in your car; it's annoying but you aren't going to get burnt. He is not getting fired until 2026 at the earliest (USC needs stability more than anything at the moment). USC is a program that has, quite frankly, forgotten how to win; long gone are the Carroll years and that well dried up years ago. They're in a transitional phase and Lincoln is at an inflection point in his career; he will either be humbled by these past two seasons and accept he his "all offense all the time" philosophy is not tenable or he won't and that will be his ultimate undoing in LA.
    ✌Fight On! ✌

  • @JohnHoulgate

    I'm a 3rd generation Trojan alum and football fan. Something is terribly wrong here. All my life, USC was the most hated football program in the country. Everyone hated us. Everyone wanted to knock us off. The popular bumper sticker around LA, said, "My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing USC." Our Pac-12 brethren rooted against us in bowl games, in spite of our successes helping them rank higher.
    Now we're getting sympathy, especially from Oklahoma fans, who we embarrassed in the 2004 season national championship game. They want to commiserate with us over Lincoln Riley. I understand he didn't exactly bring honor to Norman, OK. I understand what it means to be riding at the top, as you guys do and expecting our teams to live up to the standards the go with it.
    We used to be the bullies of the college football world. We used to love hearing the Big Ten guys tell us, "Oh, but you don't understand. Here in the Midwest, we play smash mouth football." So we'd smash them in the mouth in the bowl games, making them look no better than a middle-tier Pac 12 school. But today, we have soft practices, we couldn't even touch Washington's crappy running back. This guy, Dillon Johnson, goes 4 seasons never running more than 100 yards a game, carries for 256 against us. WTF?!
    My dear Mom (RIP), also a Trojan, used to say, "If you don't have a defense, you don't have a team. That's where we are. More than that we need monsters in the trenches - both sides. We need bullies, who are not afraid to terrorize opponents. We had that with John McKay, John Robinson and Pete Carroll. The irony is, we have them in our own backyard, but they are being recruited out of state. That has to stop.
    Thanks for the love, guys. It's nice to hear your comforting, empathetic words, but I really miss those days when you hated our guts.

    • @JohnHoulgate
      @JohnHoulgate 9 месяцев назад

      @@johantrenier1685 Are you kidding me? Helton had six seasons at USC. The first three seasons, he had leftover talent from Steve Sarkissian who had drinking problems. His last two seasons, he went 5-7 and 4-8, allowing UCLA to score 62 points on their porous defense in 2021. We knew Helton did not have any connection with the players. It was plain as day that he didn't know what he was doing. At best he was better suited for a division 2 or a D1 program outside the Power 5. His best quarterback was Sam Darnold who used his ability to improvise plays to get scores and win games. After Darnold left, he brought in JT Daniels, a pure pocket passer. After a season and a half, Daniels transferred to Georgia where they actually had an offensive line who could protect him. His backup qiarterback, Jack Sears, also bolted. Sears was more like Darnold, a scrambler who could turn a sh## play into gold. The fanbase was right to demand Helton's firing. In fact, the AD kept him on for an extra year after the dismal 2020 season giving him a second chance to turn things around. We can forgive a coach for having a down year, but when we see the same problems occuring a second year, like poor blocking in the line and non-existent tackling in the defense, you have to let the coach go.

    The thing about those Pete Carrol teams was that yes, they had a lot of flash, but they also could pound you. As an ASU fan I remember we were up on them in 2005, they came in the second half, started just running the ball down our throat. Against Texas, they were gashing a really good Texas defense, and of course those USC defenses were almost always good and smashing you right back. I like Riley, I want him to succeed but he has to start adapting to being more physical, paying more attention to his defense, and he doesn't have to be Saban. Carrol is nothing like a Saban and he could get his teams to play tough physical football, but he has to instill the mindset. Coaches can adapt, Saban being a primary example of a coach willing to always adapt even if he hates it and Riley needs to adapt.

    Ive been saying PJ Fleck would be a good fit. I think some of the make up of his style of coaching fits with the Trojan brand. You need someone that can leverage the brand before you get to the particulars of the game. Pete Carroll as I witnessed it in real time in person was a genius with it. He folded right into the spirit of being a Trojan. He bought in, came to Rallies, hyped the student body, but understood how to talk to donors which I also witnessed from a far. I dont want a repeat, but I want the next candidate to understand that with this program, you cant just be a Football savant, it sounds corny but you have to teach what it means to be a Trojan, and you have to define what exactly that is. Lincoln Riley is an X's and O's guy. I wish PJ Fleck had a better record out there with Minnesota, but it could be a recruitment issue. Its a hard place to attract recruits. I just cant see a USC PJ led team running out the tunnel with no energy.

OU fans didn't think it would be this bad, but we had come to realize his deficiencies with player development by the time he left. No matter who he hires, as long as he fosters a soft culture and keeps a yoga instructor as his strength coach, this is what his program will be.
