- College Football has seen an interesting first 2 weeks with Miami, Notre Dame, and USC all getting big wins over SEC competition. On Josh Pate's College Football Show Ep 549 Josh Pate discussed the possibility that we could see several blue blood programs emerging as College Football Playoff contenders. Will Mario Cristobal and Miami return to the head table. What about Lincoln Riley's new defensive staff at USC? Notre Dame has already been there. As a Miami Hurricanes fan its so beautiful to see Josh's obvious love for my Canes 😊
My girlfriend was asking me why I says listen to this guy in the truck. I said because JP is cane fan, he just hasn’t flat out said it 😂😂 he keeps it real when Miami under achieves but he seems really fuckin excited when Miami is doing something right.
facts man, facts
That is because Josh saw the Canes of the 80's, 90's and early 00's after probation. Miami is unique. Its not a located in a small college town! Its located just right outside of Miami in Coral Gables.
When the Irish canes and Nebraska are good. It's good for college football
Same go canes
Miami Vs Usc in the playoffs would break Tv Records.... even in 2024, the big 10 might want to pay attention to those ratings once the Acc dissolves.
it’s because of the large fanbases. but this yet again, shoots down anyone else on the rise before the NIL period. now it’s all about who has the bigger pockets and know how to use it. USC Texas Miami Nebraska Notre Dame. the 5 cornerstones college football wants to see great. every freaking year they always ask “is the U back yet?” because they want this to happen soooo bad
I would welcome the U to the Big Ten. It would be a nice addition with Notre Dame and a kind of sort of rivalry with Nebraska. Ultimately I hope the Big Ten splits into a western division and an eastern division of ten each with a 9 game divisional tilt + a championship game.
@@marine76aNotre Dame is stubborn and wants to keep the pot to themselves
I’d love to see Miami play ND this year. Miami wins by 14.
@@GoatedAtNFS they are tedious. I am annoyed they dropped their annual games with Michigan State and Michigan.
ND and the U are national brands. SC represents the entire West Coast. College football need these 3 schools to be relevant
USC is a national brand too lol, not just one coast 🫵🤣
@ScumLxrd1993 🤣 yeah, you are absolutely right. but compare to the other 2 schools, SC have a whole state behind them.
LMAO!! USC is a national brand. Miami is not! Sorry! ✌🏽
Da U is not national bro. Nd yes. SC so so
USC is National don’t disrespect
As a Miami fan, my only regret for Miami is when, Butch Davis left for the Cleveland Browns in 2000! If Butch stays at Miami, We and I would have gotten the match up of Miami vs USC in the BCS at least twice after 2002 to 2006! Miami and USC would have been on collision course to face either. Everybody coast to coast would have want to see that match up! Miami and USC parallel each other in so many ways. Both are private schools! Both are located in famous warmer year round international cities with great recruiting basis in Southern California and South Florida. Both have been and can be great national recruiters. Both have a laundry list of great CFB players and NFL players. The who's who's of all-time greats in CFB and the NFL!

I’ve been pulling my hair out watching Miami baseball for so long😕 but I really believe we’re gonna be solid this spring. I’m not sure who is coming back for sure but if Cuvet, Cyr, Torres, Carrier, Villegas and Dorian Gonzalez all come back the Canes are gonna be pretty salty.

@@dvbagnascoI agree we make a deep run this year...more talent will wanna come if we can get there
Miami and USC don't. Florida at home the last two years, they beat a ranked Utah in 2022 and beat down a ranked Tennessee in 2023. Miami and UF are serious state rivals. I know, I live here in Florida. The rival used to be played every year but stop in 1987. Miami, FSU and UF used to play each other every year post 1987 for about 50 straight years. UF wanted to destroy Miami at home! USC couldn't stop a cold on defense the last two years. Everybody called them soft and not physical the last few years and they've called Lincoln Riley coached teams soft since he was hired at OU. That isn't want we saw against LSU, this pass Saturday. USC looked like USC under Pete Carrol on defense against LSU.

Great segment Josh! I’ll never forget the epic Notre Dame vs Miami battles of the late 80’s and early 90’s. Glad to see all 3 likely in the CFP. Fun fact though: although not elite, only 5 schools in the nation have more wins than Notre Dame in the last 10 years (and not cream puff schedules).

Bold Prediction, as the season goes forward we're going to view Caleb Williams last year with USC in the same way people thought Cam Ward's season would go at Miami. A supremely and uniquely talented individual, who does as much outside the context of his playbook as within its confines, and you take the good with the bad. Ward showed that a little bit game 1 with Miami, but he also showed a willingness to play within Dawson's scheme. Caleb was a great QB for Caleb's purposes, Miller Moss has the potential to be a great QB for USC.

This season is already exciting, because Miami seems to be back. Add USC and Notre Dame, icing on the cake. However, it’s much better when FSU, Florida, and Tennessee, are also perennial powers.
Welcome to Miami!!!
Miami, Notre Dame, and USC are all very good this year. LSU is a very good football team as well.
College Football is always better when the blue blood programs are doing well. These are the schools with
the largest fan bases and the highest TV ratings. The Marquee teams all good is great for College Football.
JP, us canes fans love you bro 😅 🙌
Everybody's high on Georgia tech right now but when Miami mud stops them and Louisville college football will take notice that Miami is no joke and they coming.
However, last year Miami started 4-0, before falling apart and finishing 7-6. So I think people could be jumping the gun on them, after one win over a mid team.
Nobody other than Miami fans wants to see my CANES back like they were in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. They dominated college football and had to have referees decide games with horrible calls to keep them from winning 2 or 3 more national championships. You can’t do that now with instant replay and social media. It’s only one game, but something feels different, almost like 1999 again when we were coming off of 2 seasons of mediocrity and probation and Butch Davis was the head coach.

@@justhereforthefoliage If Miami isn't on your list, but you got OU and Nebraska LOL. Miami owns those two chumps
@@Vegas3RSPilot All time, Miami is not elite. They were absolutely nothing up until late 1980s. Those other brands go back to the 1890s. Miami is up there in top 12 or so, but it’s too recent to be a blue blood, same with Florida, LSU, UGA and some others.
@@justhereforthefoliage Late 1980s? They were national champions in the early 80s. And the list is silly because 1.) if it's about old school, where's Yale and Army? 2.) If you're not using the last 40 years or so as dominant criteria, you're just being fundamentally dishonest. A list like that is chopping off and including dates just to select the teams you want to glorify - which generally is all this "blue blood" nonsense usually is anyway.
@@echt114 Because Yale moved into a lower division that was much smaller than the big time and became nationally irrelevant as they spent less and less on CFB. Army does have an amazing pedigree, no one should argue that. Doesn’t make them Bama but it doesn’t make them trash either.
You can’t look at just 40 years of a sport that’s 120 years old. The definition of blue blood is a family of the highest social order with power, wealth and pedigree with nobility. You can’t just make that up in a few years or even decades. It takes centuries to build those strong roots.
Great points again Josh
I’d throw TN in with those three they just started to get resurrected with Josh Heupel and he makes it really fun to watch with the high flying offense and the aggressive type defense they like to play and throw in the multi uniforms and the AD Danny White being traditional but also innovative really think TN makes the sport even more fun to watch for an average fan or newcomer to the sport
Nah
its good for Tennessee fans but they aren't the caliber of brands of the other 3.
For those of you who say, Miami isn't a blue blood. Let me give you the scoop on the importance of the Big 3 of Florida which is Miami, FSU, and UF. The Big 3 of Florida led by Miami changed CFB for the better and bought it into the modern times in the 80's, 90's and 00's. Under Howard Schellenberger at Miami in 79, he brought the modern NFL passing game to CFB. Howard was the OC for the NFL Miami Dolphins for 7 years in the 1970's before taking the Miami Hurricanes job in 1979. Howard took the Hurricanes job based on seeing on the NFL talent from South Florida/Florida in the NFL being with the Dolphins. He realized, he gets what he wants in South Florida recruiting as the Canes HC, he could competed against anybody in the nation and win a national title. His vision came true in 1983 and Miami Hurricanes won the 1st national title in the state of Florida. Under Jimmy Johnson, Miami ushered in the scheme/emphasize of speed on defense at all 11 starting positions based on recruiting the fast players here in Florida. ESPN did an article about a few years back! FSU quickly followed suit! Under Jimmy Johson in 1987, Miami became the first University to get a apparel deal with Nike for its sport programs because of Miami FB. Now every P4 team has apparel deals to which top teams make 10 to 15 million dollars a year. As a Miami fan, this take my be basis but I considered Miami dynasty 83 to 92 was the greatest in CFB history and great than Saban run at Alabama. Why? Miami won 4 national titles in 9 years, it should have been 5 or 6 titles. The reason, why, Miami dynasty is the best of all time, 83 to 92, they did it with 3 different HC's/leaders. Saban stayed at Alabama for 16 years. I could have image if Howard Schellenberger or Jimmy Johnson stays at Miami for at least 10 to 12 years. Both easily could have won 3 to 5 national titles. Butch Davis stays at Miami 00 to 05, how many national titles does he win. There is a statement attributed to legendary HC Bear Byrant, he said, University of Florida was a sleeping giant. I would adjust that statement, Miami, FSU and UF were sleeping giants in CFB in which Miami led the charge! Also, the rise of CFB in Florida with the Big 3 in the 80's, 90's and 00's, led by Miami, it helped push CFB to being national, instead of just regional. My SEC friends, they only want to be regional. The tv money has gotten bigger because of national interest not regional interest!
Miami, Texas, USC, ND final four
@@schumi9xwdc Yu might as well take ND outta there bruhh😂😂
My Hurricanes look impressive, I like what USC doing, and ND looked pretty good. Now we just need Nebraska to get back.

Josh, you are right about the success of traditional powers is good for college football. It is really about marketing: how many potential fans are there of a particular team, which leads to increased ratings, excitement and promotional opportunities. The same thing is true of the NFL and the NHL.
I am sure I will leave some out, but some of the marquis teams historically in NCAA Division I football include: Alabama, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Florida, Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Oregon, Florida State, Clemson, LSU, Nebraska etc. And if you want to go way back: Army and the University of Chicago, lol. People like to see a formerly blueblood team lift itself up from its bootstraps and return to prominence (ex., if Nebraska were to do so) or figure out a way to compete with the best recruiting teams in the nation in this new era (ex. Notre Dame). It is all good for the sport and the fandom.
Really enjoy your content, Josh. I'd really be interested in watching/hearing your thoughts on the 10 Blue Bloods of college football that you mention in the beginning of this video. Obviously, Miami, USC, and Notre Dame are three of them, but who are the rest?
This is what it was all about.
Getting Old Brands with Rich alumni to buy more NCAA crap.
They had to change the rules of the game (transfer portal and NIL) to keep Nick Saban or his guys from winning every year.
Expanding to 12 team playoff and more blue bloods become relevant, whomst among us would have thunk it?
Didn’t you say Texas A&M would beat ND & it wouldn’t even be that close?
Good call 👍🏾
College teams normally have notable alumni on the sidelines during big games but seeing random celebrities on the sidelines of USC home games used to be a normal occurrence back in the mid 00s
The U is coming back!
It's usually the case where people will watch when the hated teams play. Same with crime shows on TV. This gets more passion from viewers into the game and gives neutral fans a team to root for during games that their team is not playing in i.e. any team playing one of the bad/hated teams. Ray
This holds out well.
You know what’s actually terrible and a nightmare? The same 3 damn teams running the sport over everyone else the last 15 years
Been burned too many times. I’ll have tempered expectations throughout the year and get more excited after each win. I’ve been here before albeit I truly think this is one of the deeper, more talented rosters ND has had in a long time.
After this week, it is obvious that it is WAY too early to say which teams are going to be in the "playoff discussion." Notre Dame just lost a game at home in which they were a 28 point favorite. Penn State almost lost to Bowling Green! Michigan was totally outclassed by Texas. The Big "Ten" is wide open this year, so let's wait a week or three before we start saying which team is playoff worthy.
Beginning in 2000 CFB had the best team of all time the 2001 Canes, followed by a dominant 3 year run by USC , followed by Vince Young and Texas, and then the Gators had a good 3 year run. Saban was too good and a conference full of flyover states took over the sport and made it stale nationally. These 3 can bring more interest to the sport Nationally
I know we demand better but SC won a rose bowl 6 yrs ago and was 1 game away from the final 4 just two years ago.

Hi Josh love your show. But things to be said about USC. Last 23 years only 7 times didn’t finish top 25. 9 top 6 finishes. 14, 9 win seasons. Yes no title since 04 but they were still winning a lot and relevant. Even when they went into sanctions. They only had two losing seasons past 24 years. It’s really only been 2018 they been mediocre to bad with the one Caleb year, they won some games.

I've been saying it for years, the SEC is not that strong after Georgia and Alabama. The reason why it looks tough is because all of the SEC recruits similar style players just so they can kinda compete with Georgia and Alabama which is why it looks great. The fact is now with Saban gone, the SEC is just a good conference taking Georgia out of the mix. And yes, college football is much better when Miami, FSU, Gators and yes Notre Dame. Remember the 90's? Erickson, Davis, Spurrier, Bowden and Lou Holtz and Osbourne? Most of the titles back was going through these teams. I think the 90's was the golden era of college football, my opinion. All these teams need to do well.
