Impresive! Nice video. DR has Miami like cities with big supermarkets department stores, subway. Or small beach town like Luperon. So, your expirience will depend on your location. Cap Cana is probably the most upscale boat port.
Thanks for another great video! I appreciate you sharing your budget and things like mooring costs. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures in the DR

Emily & Clark's Adventure We are planing set sail as soon as the US Canada borders open, its still being pushed back each month. The locks will be closing on October 14th for us, so time is running out. Our boat is just 5 minutes on the other side of the US border, so far yet so close. Unfortunately accessing our sailing is not considered an essential travel. We have been planning for this trip for 2 years and was supposed to set sail for the Caribbeans in 2020. Looks like we will have to push back our plans until next summer.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. Same thing is happening out here. Bahamas is kicking people out on a whim. Most countries have closed borders. We are probably going to stay here till there is a vaccine. On top of that it's a horrible hurricane year. As far as cruising goes, and much else, this year is a write-off. I'd stay home unless things change. But sorry you are trapped, that never feels good.
Emily & Clark's Adventure Yes, I guess the smart thing is to wait it out, you are out there and have a better perception of what could await us, thanks for your reply, guess we,ll end up buying winter clothes after all.
It is smart to point out that subscribing is free, more creators should point that out and go into more detail. So many people that I talk to about RUclips, many of them over about age 70 never subscribe because they are unsure if it will cost them anything.
Hmm 15-20 knts pleasant? Try reading a newspaper, or keeping your hat on if directly into that. Or setting something light down in the cockpit. It think this is why I prefer European anchorages, much better protection, and usually a drier dinghy right. Curious though, as in Curacao and considering heading to up DR. I'm guessing the Presidente is cheap? ;)
As far as the wind goes. I like the breeze when it's hot but yeah it can be limiting. I haven't talked to anyone down there. What are the covid restrictions like? With all the storm activity this year I'd stay south till the hurricane season is over.
Another great video. The onboard cooking looks divine too. Although I must say, I would usually well exceed your $10 monthly budget for alcohol. Probably best I don't live on a boat for that reason. ;-)
Drinking is definitely part of the sailing culture for some people. We have definitely been guilty of overendulging, and decided it wasn't worth it. So a couple drinks at happy hour, or a bottle of wine shared among friends is usually perfect for us. -E
Do you have a video explaining how you set up your tax situation such that your land based house expenses are under $600 per year??? And did I miss the air conditioner build video?
We might go into the house situation more in another video. But the house is paid off, appraised quite low, we self-insure, have no HOA, and the house itself is less than 1000 square feet and low maintenance (e.g., we have a nice woman who mows our lawn periodically, but that's about it). A snowbird cousin rents it a few months per year. So that just leaves annual taxes, and some tiny costs to pay the city for trash disposal, garbage, and other small fees. There is always a tax loophole to find, and we figured it out for our particular county (which we won't talk about publicly, but if you message us on Patreon we could give you more specifics). You just have to figure out what works where you are.
Regarding A/C, we haven't done the build video yet. But we have had it installed on the boat for almost 6 months now, so we have a better idea of how to make the install successful, how much power it uses, maintenance, and which components are best. Not sure when the video will come out, hopefully this year. In the meantime, a couple viewers joined Patreon to chat with Clark by phone about how to start designing and building their own, and whether it's right for their boat. That's an option if you're really serious about it and want to talk to us one-on-one. -E
Hi Ron. I had a cape horn on the boat for over 20 years. I like that one best but I never really used it on Temptress. The big hydraulic autopilot just works so well. You will see it on the boat tour video but we just took it off and it's now on a friends boat here in Luperon. With all the solar I've added I wanted less weight in the stern and the panels would have probably disturbed the wind signal too much anyway. I did sail to Hawaii with one. Good piece of gear! -C
Having had a below deck unit die 1/3 of the way to Bermuda from Newport while double handing, I'm always a bit nervous. What is the displacment of your boat?
She tends to weigh about 35,000 when loaded up for a voyage. I've been using the same octopus electric/hydraulic ram for 25 years. That's over 20,000 ocean miles. No issues yet.
Don't say that too loud!!! I have a Raymarine below deck unit on my new (to me) 37 foot sloop, but as a back up I got a Pelegic tiller pilot (from Scanmar...the folks who sell the Monitor Wind Vane) and set it up to drive the emergency tiller, as my boat has a wheel. I also have a WIndpilot Pacific that I've finally figured out how to mount, as I have a fold down transom which has its challenges. I will be mounting that later this year. My pervious boat, a 35 footer damaged beyond repair in Huriccane Irma, had an Alpha autopilot (now out of busines) that served me well for 14,000 miles. But I had a Monitor Wind Vane mounted as a back up. I singehand a lot.
Why change the monthly log it's great! Wouldn't mind seeing how you built the battery, out put eta as im looking to run an electric motor with a solar seat on the tender, Good to see your none the worse for your hospital visits thankfully, cheers guys
Yes, I'm definitely feeling better. As for videos (and batteries), we want to focus more on SHOWING verses TELLING people what we're doing. Right now our plan is to put out the monthly adventure log and keep it to about 15 mins, then do more in-depth videos about technical things. Expect a 4-stroke motor fix soon, and batteries is also on our list--specifically, our lithium-AGM hybrid system, and how Clark build this mobile battery! -E
No plans as such. We are just waiting out the pandemic, hurricane season, and getting our new mainsail. But after that we might head east. It's been years since I've sailed that area. -C
No, the deck on Temptress is plywood with fiberglass over and teak glued on top. So no leaks from that, can't say the same about hatches and joints. I'm slowly replacing the deck as it has gotten real thin over the last 50 years. Several boards came unglued during the month from hell we put her through getting here. I'll get to working on deck again soon. I milled a bunch of teak strips and replace the worse few at a time. -C
Hopefully tide would come up and we float off eventually. If not we put out kedge anchors and maybe even fill the dinghy with water to heel the boat by the mast. It would have been lots of work. We had months of food and can make water so no problem there. And possibly enough gas to get to land by dinghy. -C
That's a pretty cool place in the Dom Republic..great place to get all your goodies, food, beer and medical on the cheap. I'd stay there living on my boat (if i had one) for 6 months a year. On the topic of reefs...was it a coral reef? How do you normally get off a reef.....(% Wise) backwards, sideways or thrust over the top? ...could you take a hammer and chisel and go underwater to chisel away the calcium carbonate...is that possible?
Always different. One tactic is filling the dinghy with water and trying to lift it up the mast. You fail (that's the point) and the boat heals over. That lifts the keel and the boat needs less water so it floats. -C
A bit, but probably less than any big american city. Someone broke into a couple of boats last week to steal money and there was an attempted theft of a dinghy (for the motor) a couple of weeks ago.
