The 260, 289 and 302 were all slight increases from the original "Windsor" block that debuted in 1962, a 221 cubic inch engine. In 1968, the deck was raised to accommodate the longer stroke of the 351, and the 351 also has larger main journals than the 302. The 302 was also a 28.8 oz imbalance engine until 1983 model year cars, when 50 imbalance because standard on 302 engines. The 351 Windsor also came standard with roller cams beginning 1994, to only last until 1997. 302 lived untill 2001 in the Explorer.

    351W specific Headers are recommended.
302 W heads can be used on 351W but the 302 head bolt opening will require drilling to 1/2 inch bolt.

  • @marklohnes6313
    @marklohnes6313 2 года назад +5

Nice video! I have a few things to add:
Oil pan, oil pumps and windage trays also won’t interchange. The 351w dizzie is not only longer but more importantly the oil pump drive shaft is physically larger, meaning the hex drive is larger, so that isn’t interchangeable either.
While camshafts can interchange it is important to note that a cam for a 302 won’t run the same in a 351. You can run a larger, ie longer duration cam in a 351, all things being the same, than you can in a 302. This can be advantageous if torque down low is important to you.
Main journal bearings are larger so the bottom end is different and that’s important to know as well. The block is 75 pounds heavier so there might be a need to change strut springs out for heavier ones if you swap to 351. IMHO the 351 is far better for the strength of the bottom end than for the 50 cubes greater displacement. More headroom for higher power, it also longevity if not built too stout or horsed to hard at the track.

Crane Cams sold a conversion kit that came with the hold down spider and proper lifters and dogbones. The drivers side power steering and a/c brackets don't line up. I made a bracket to use them. Only issue is the battery tray now touches. Ford made a conversion bracket. I bought offset bushings for the rack and used convertible style engine mounts. I used the distributor from the lightning and put the right gear on it.

I’m in the middle of a 427 build. One thing to know is going to a 408W using stock 351W block not an issue but a 427 means an even longer stroke so if you want a 427 generally better to go to Dart or Boss block.
If you have existing turbo or supercharger From your 302 based motor you’ll need different brackets to mount to the 351W blocks it’s not direct swap.
Depending on your rotating assembly the 351W could be either 28oz -or- 0 oz balancer
Oil pick up and oil pump (and shaft) are different than 302 as well so Budget for new oiling system.
Most Budget way to do swap is get a running motor and throw a turbo or SC on it. Otherwise plan on spending some coin

Even in a carb 302 setup if your going for performance, using a phonlic spacer, performer RPM type intake and a diecent sized air cleaner you will still need a small cowl hood. Most people out there slap on Victor Jr intakes which make the fitment issue worse. Main reason cowl hoods were popular back in the day were that EFI to carb swaps were very popular and for a performance/race oriented carb induction, the stock hood wouldn't due. That being the case for a 302, a taller 351 with a diecent street/strip carb build fitting under the stock hood is very unlikely.

I just got my swap kinda done for now...stock 302 with ball drive Paxton to 393 Lightning roller stroker...never looking back as the 351 block is so much stronger. You really don't have a choice with the 302 unless you step up to Dart/Boss if you want to go north of 550. I know, I know people have had them live but I have seen stock 351W shortblocks make 1000 hp. Not pushing mine north of 650-700 but just saying...

I used the solid drop motor mounts and a solid transmission mount. Works good. I need to lower my front sway bar too. The pan is REAL CLOSE, without the drop mounts it probably would be better. I was trying to fit it all under the stock hood. However the Victor Jr intake, phenolic spacer, and Holley 750 still didn't. I take the hood off when it has an air filter on it. My plan is a Spectre carb hat, build a 4" fenderwell cold air intake, and cut the hood to clear the carb hat.

Pretty sure you are correct about the 351W roller coming out in 94. On the roller lifter 302 blocks, the lifter bores are taller than the non-roller. If you use the dog bones on a non roller 302 block, the lifters can rotate and wipe out your cam. Not sure if this is the same for a non-roller 351. So, I would be hesitant to to run anything other than link bar lifters in any non roller block. Thunderhead289 explains it in this video: ruclips.net/video/fukZI8CIG6g/видео.html. Skip to about 8:25 to see it.

Have to use the smaller newer ones, and if it's like my 83 was, you'll have to clearence the strut tower for the newer one as it's longer overall and doesn't have that spot clearenced for it like the newer foxes.

I LOVE Fords, but they have always made it very difficult to upgrade engines, swap engines especially modified engines to other vehicles. You need to have a Ford degree, that's how complicated it can get. This is why the general masses have always flocked to GM. Most everything interchangeable, It still doesn't make me a GM fan, I love my FORDS, and it takes a lot more work to modify a Ford motor, so many things you need to know, nothing is a given like on GMs. But if you can strive to achieve the knowledge you need to put together a magnificent Ford engine. I believe it will be a satisfying and worthwhile task.
