Bill! for crisper edges when you paint on masking tape, mask off your area and then apply the base color that you used under the tape as your first layer. This will "Seal" the edge and the bleed will not show as its the under color already and then use whatever color after that. Perfect lines every single time.

Just a suggestion about masking, that I learned painting houses. If after you mask, you paint around the mask with the original base color, the bleed will be in the base color and will seal the tape line. Then you come back with the color you want, and when you pull the mask off, the lines are super crisp.

That chunky rust paint looks fantastic, it really looks like real rust blooming from under the paint!
Isn't it neat? It does a great job creating that effect.
You should tint your mod podge with some acrylic that way you can see how well it's covered. Plus it will act as a base coat when painting :D

when you were messing up the screws to make them look less shiny it reminded me of a tip I once got from a friend about hardware weathering, if you wanted them kinda more tarnished then you could have put them in a super hot oven for a while then quenched them, or you could have dunked them in some hydrochloric acid provided they aren't galvanized or plated or whatever. Apart from that the build was awesome. i liked that the wash made it look like the flat head bits in the screws had filled with grease and dirt.

Hey did you know the mini nuke is actually based on a real life project that’s we did but it was shut down cause I don’t really remember it’s probably just didn’t meat the expectation

This guy is really amazing. Here in the Philippines, the only sealer we use before painting is acrylic emulsion and we use only a super glue called Greco. None of us here ever use contact cement due to lacj of patience. None of us have even ever used or heard of Mod Podge before.
Luckily, im an adventurous Filipino. :)

I absolutely loved this build! In the future, I would personally wonder about the logistics of the rust though, in regards to the screws: When metal rusts, usually there's a fair amount underneath that's rusted too, and would require a lot of treatment in order to bring back the metallic steel color you see in the screws at the end. So I think that making the screws completely rust-colored would add that little extra touch to complement the rusted paint finish. All the same, excellent job! A wonderful recreation.
I'm planning to make my first foam project soon, a Bajoran phaser from Star Trek Deep Space 9. Definitely going to have to get some ModPodge and check out Plaid's supplies!
Black Magic Craft puts some black acrylic hobby paint into his Mod podge to both seal the foam and do a base primer color. Works good.
that mini nuke on the pipe reminded me of the egg wand the sorceress uses in on of the old spyro the dragon games when you were waving it around theres another use for the egg pattern

Bandsaws are very safe, motion is always into saw bed, the work is pulled down flat and cannot kick. Rotaries fire debris all around at ridiculous speeds, and shattered discs are like shrapnel.
atrtsh I see your reasoning, but when using a band saw u should always use a push stick
@@haydenweeks7336 With small or non-square work it's not always practical, especially if using a fence or a low blade guide/guard. In principle I agree, I have a couple of sticks and a pad by my saw, but you'll find that theory and practice don't always match up, especially for detail work.

Nesting tip, if you pull one corner of a shape like that down towards the edge of the sheet, you can fit the next one into the gap under the other tip and waste a lot less material.
That’s just so incredibly impressive....I’m pretty new to watching prop production and foam seems amazing to me...I’ve had a large roll of 6mm foam for 2 years...might make the jump soon....I’m loving cardboard at the moment....nearly finished my 1/3 scale Ironman suit....

This would make an awesome piece on a shelf. Then, if you add a tilt switch with a nice recorded audio track, it will be an awesome conversation starter every time you leave a Fallout fan alone in the office for a few minutes. Thanks for sharing, Bill!

Mix modge podge with black craft paint, will thin the glue and not dry clear anymore... also makes it good for sealing Styrofoam...

So I was just watching this build and its so awesome! I was thinking, instead of cutting the divot lines in the top of the nuke maybe use the V-shaped mini file and just trace into it the long way, would make for a more even v groove I think.

Great video - just happened to be looking for how to make a dummy bomb. Now I just have to figure out to be able to screw open/close the finished piece so I can insert some digital electronics inside to control some blinking lights/sounds & such - and be able to make the occasional mod/repair/battery replacement to the circuit. Thanks much.

I love sealing with Mod Podge, and one technique that I picked up from the Black Magic Craft channel is to use tinted Mod Podge so I can see where I've brushed it already, plus it gives you an extra layer of primer.
I use india ink to tint my Mod Podge. Several drops in a resealable cup go a long way in the Mod Podge.

A paint tip that I found out recently for paint tape bleed. If you use a clear coat matte after you tape, it seals up the edges enough that it won't bleed. Cheers!

@@thebeybladearmory most 3D printed stuff I've seen still looks horribly ragged. It's a useful technique, but hardly the be-all and end-all of prop making. Besides, it takes quite a different skill set to 3D model something compared to doing a great paintjob, which is what sells this project.
I wouldn't pay 150 for either the foam OR 3D printed version though. Unless you need to buy all the paints and tools still, the materials are pocket-change level. Again, the only thing making this difficult and therefore expensive, is the skill of the painter. I'd rather have a go at making it myself than spending a ton of money to buy some instant gratification, that'll only last a few days.

That looks awesome, THe painting step I'm sure is where I would mess things up.
Just a tip from a painter for when you mask things. If you put down the same color as the thing you tape on first, then paint the color you want it's much less likely for the paint to get under the tape. That way you get much cleaner lines. So in this case, after you taped on the green basecolor, you should paint a layer of the same green on the tape, then add the yellow when the green is dry.
Try it out. :)

Unreal work, so satisfying to watch
Another good rust technique is to use your rust color paint, let it dry and then super glue cinnamon over the top. It adds a matte and crunchy looking texture. Can be sealed with spray sealer like regular paint.
I've seen people mix the cinnamon into the paint too! It's a cool technique for sure

Great project, great video, solid tips. If the prop held more nostalgia for me, I'd make one as well.
One thing that could make this video even better though, are some "what-if" tips. You mentioned possible things that could have gone wrong a few times, but didn't really go into solutions.
I'm sure many projects were scrapped because of one slip up and "well, now it's totally RUINED!" It'd be great to see how to fix stuff like that.

A couple of years ago for colossal con I made a samurai version of Nido king. I used the same method with the hole puncher to make like ~200 holes. It was the roughest 3 days of cosplay crunching to date.
