The song's lyrics involve a narrator describing the terrors of nightmares. The opening line of the song's intro and chorus ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you") is taken from the German children's TV Show "Mr Sandman", which provided children with a "nice" bedtime story. The song's narrator appears as a much more darker version of this character.
In this video, the character of the Sandman is played by Melanie Gaydos a famous model. Melanie Gaydos has suffered from a rare genetic defect since she was born: Her head is bald, her teeth and nails are malformed. She first appears to a sleeping Richard Kruspe, triggering nightmares and sending him into a state of agony. Meanwhile, Till terrorizes the complex of Beelitz-Heilstätten (military hospital of the Imperial German Army and Adolf Hitler recuperated there after being wounded in the first world war), which acts as an orphanage. He kidnaps the orphans and places them in a cage located in the main bathroom. A female warden attempts to defend the children with a shotgun, but Till overpowers her. The warden appears in the video both young (Viktorija Bojarskaja) and old (Anna von Rüden), while Till remains the same age, indicating immortality and paranormal abilities.
While guarding the orphans, Till takes a grotesque, insect-like form with an elongated head and fingers. The children are then used in various examinations and surgeries with the rest of the band playing the doctors. The female warden is also seen assisting them in her younger form. One of the surgeries sees a child's tears extracted through a syringe, which is then vaginally injected by the Sandman. The Sandman is also subject to examinations by the doctors, as Paul H. Landers is seen giving her a gynecological examination.
She later walks in a dress shielding two small children, possibly indicating that the tears are involved in a form of In vitro fertilisation. While Till is away from the main bathroom, the children (portrayed by the rest of the band as disheveled adults) escape from their cage and the orphanage. This causes Till to tear out and consume his own heart while the Heilstätten is engulfed in an inferno. The video ends with the liberated walking away from the building, while the chorus of the piano version plays in the background, signalling the video of the piano version as an afterword. (Wikipedia)
The song "my heart burns" is the film score for "Lilja 4-ever". A film about child prostitution. That's why you could interpret the text based on this film. In the film, girls from Russia lured to Sweden in the hope of a better life, in which a young and attractive man promises her heaven there: "Dear children, take care, I am the voice from the pillow" Then the sentence "Tore it out of my chest, I can imagine that she died inside every time she was raped. Since the rapes happen under cover of the night, this motif comes up frequently in the song. They steal your hot little tears, The film is a nightmare and it leaves a feeling of emptiness and powerlessness ...

The beginning is actually taken from Das Sandmännchen (The Little Sandman). Every night the show would come on and the das Sandmännchen would tell bedtime stories. Each show started out with "Nun, liebe Kinder, gebt fein Acht. Ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht" ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you").
Think of a darker, twisted Sandman. As if he were Pennywise the clown. He wants the children to have nightmares & feeds on their fears & their tears. The woman has been defending the children for decades against him taking the children, but alas, she grew too old & couldn't fight him off anymore. Then the children revolt & kill the monster.
The west german Sandmännchen. East had their own Sandmännchen. If a child in the east at school could complete the saying, they knew that the parents were watching forbidden western television.

Well the East German (GDR) creation of the Sandmännchen is already a twisted one as in the old mythology the sandman is a deamon who brings nightmares and eats sleeping children.
My interpretation is a little diffrent than yours. As always Rammstein processes historical or actual happenings or cruelties. Orphanages have a bad reputation of child abuse and even medical experiments/surgery experiments (hundereds of years ago) because orphans have nobody that cares and will not be missed. Till is crying and taking revenge. He burns this place down representing an abused child that came back to judge his bullies, and the children being first able to escape when they are adults represent the psychological damages from the shaming and treatment without dignity (Eselsmützen (Donkey hats), standing in the corner of shame with a bag over there head (Entmenschlichung - dehumanizatition) that take years to process and overcome. .
He is not sayin "Ich komme zu euch" (i come to you) but sie kommen zu euch in der Nacht, Dämonen, Geister, Schwarze Feen (THEY come to you in the night, demons, Ghosts, Black Fairies) and that they will look under their blankets, while till says "I have brought you something a bright shine on the firmament" so he has come to free them by bringing the light/fire. In a religious sense the lightbringer is lucifer by the way.
The symbolism of the Cellos bottoms pointed at his chest (where his heart is) represent the german saying "Jemandem dass Messer an die Kehle halten" (to put someone the knife on the throat) meaning forcing someone by fear for his/her life.
Mein Herz brennt (My heart burns) means passion but can also mean burning pain (brennender Schmerz). "Hab es (the heart) aus meiner Brust gerissen" (Ripped out my heart from my chest) is meaning he killed all emotions and fears except for hate and revenge and with that heart he has the power (Mit diesem Herz hab ich die macht) to blackmail the eyelids (die Augenlieder zu erpressen), of course withe the sandman reference one might think he closes eyes and brings bad dreams, buit i think he means the opposite, to open eyes and make them see, "Ich sinde bis der tag erwacht" he sings till dawn "ein heller Schein am Firmament", a bright shine on the firmament, sound s like he is comforting the children, bringing light and hope by opening their eyes (remember the maid took them to bed and turned of the lights, forcing them to go to sleep) making them see and understand, that it's not them being bad but the people who should have cared for them, burning down their prison.
Excellent reaction...as others have said you absolutely have to watch the "piano only" video...Till is amazing! As is the rest of the band but IMO he's the best front man out there!

Oh my goodness !!! I haven't seen/heard this version before. It so much more than the version I have. Your reaction shows something of a searching mind, wanting to delve deeper into the mind of the band. Me too. Finding out a bit about musical creators goes a long way to understanding their music, and what makes them tic.
I don't know, but I suspect that to band use a vocabulary of past times to give the songs a gothic feel to them. English singing rock singers to the same to good effect. I've live performances of this song, and as awesome as they are, seeing an official video puts the song in a new light. All great stuff. See you soon. TTFN.

I watched a video on Till's dialect. The guy in the video determined he uses what is called Stage German. The pronunciations are specifically so they can be heard clearly and certain letters dont get lost.
Thank you for mentioning German isn’t really spoken like that normally. Rammstein is playing with a specific persona and stereotype which fits with their music perfectly. We‘re not all sounding aggressive and hateful 😂

I found it very fascinating but I’m not surprised when a heard that Till put an extra emphasis on to the exaggerating the way the words are pronounced. In some songs, in quieter songs like sterbt nicht vor mir or ohne dich, he sounds less aggressive

@@nanaking9560 Well, he once said, that it is also not so easy not to do so, when he sings deep. I also think he uses something, what I know as "stage German". I am an actress in the theatre and we also learned that specific language, where we pronounce the German language a little bit different, so that the audience understands us better. When this came out, it was the fucking soundtrack to my middle school years. It was filled with such a weird depression and nostalgia because of my having to move out of the state yet again losing all my friends. The feeling of cold air on my face as I laid on my trampoline in the backyard staring into the gray sky, or the chilled mornings on the bus to school just knowing that I was going to have my whole life changed again. Love this album so much but damn does it always hurt hearing them again.

German is still spoken like that (rolling the R) in some of the dialects. (Innviertel in Upper Austria for example)

You know which channel I think is super underrated? Metal Piano Music. The guy spends weeks composing classic metal songs into classical/relaxing piano pieces and he hardly gets any views. That dude deserves millions of followers 🤷

The way it's written, one can't really directly translate because it's in quite a 'poetic' more old-fashioned form of German. It would lose the 'meaning' and the sinister feeling if you tried to translate directly to English. Most of their older songs are like that - more modern ones I find have become less poetic and easier to translate to English, in a way. This one is a bit spooky as it's about the monsters and scary stuff that come out at night that make children scared. But, like you said, his voice and the music is so intriguing, you don't need to understand the words to enjoy it!

he IS the boogeyman. although that doen's really exist here. it's about demons, monsters and ghosts that come at night and take the children. can also be interpretated as a song about childrens imagination and night terrors and the fear of the dark

Sounds like he saying, " MY BEST FRIEND!" Instead of , " MEIN HERZ BRENNT!" There are two versions of videos for this song and the other instead of Mein Herz BRENNT, it is Merin Herz Brennt'.
