How to Create Installation Media for Windows 10 | Microsoft

  • You can use installation media (a USB flash drive or DVD) to install a new copy of Windows, perform a clean installation, or reinstall Windows 10.
To create the installation media, here's what you'll need:
    1. A PC with a reliable internet connection. The download time will vary, depending on your internet connection.
    2. A USB flash drive or DVD. A blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space, or a blank DVD (and DVD burner). We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD because any content on it will be deleted. When burning a DVD from an ISO file, if you're told the disc image file is too large, you'll need to use dual layer (DL) DVD media.
    3. A product key. Your 25-character product key (not required for digital licenses). For help finding it, go to: support.microsoft.com/en-us/w...
    Support article: support.microsoft.com/en-us/w...

You can simply insert it in the PC you want to install windows in and then you can boot from USB the Windows 10 setup. If the option doesn't come automatically you can also do it from your BIOS options.

After obtaining the ISO, you would use it to burn Windows to a DVD? Isn't that an extra step? I'm confused between all these choices. Which one is best? Are there any more details, or where can one go to learn more about this? I guess I'll just delete this comment.

    • @GTAModsShowcase

After the ISO been downloaded choose that option in the end of the video to proceed to burning the ISO to the DVD.
Alternatively you can use the USB method also if you wish instead. Both methods are simple and excellently explained in the video.

Hello there. Thank you for reaching out here at the Social Media Support team.
We see that you have concerns about the installation media that can be used to install a new copy of Windows. We know how important it is to get this sorted out. Allow us to check on this, and we’ll assist you in the best way we can.
Regarding your query, if it will delete the data on the computer used to install the media, may we clarify if the data that you’re referring to are the files from that computer?
When creating an installation media or Windows ISO files using a working computer, there will be no changes that will be made since you’ll be using that PC only to download a copy of Windows and save it to a USB flash drive or DVD. The data or files on the computer used will be kept.
We hope that helps and answered the question. If you have other clarifications, don’t hesitate to let us know.

This means there should be no changes made at all aside from using that computer to download the installation file for Windows and save it to the USB flash drive or DVD.
We hope everything has been covered and addressed. Let us know if you have other concerns that we can assist you with. Have a great day.

Hello there! We’ve looked through that you want to clarify if mobile devices can be used to download Windows 10 Media creation tool. Let’s take a closer look at this together. By the way, apologies for the late response.
Quick answer, as of the moment, a PC with reliable network connection is the only device that can be used to download a Media Creation tool. We know that it might be a bit challenging for those users who don’t have a spare PC, and thanks for bringing this to our attention. With this, we would suggest letting our support engineers know about this as Microsoft continuously strives to improve its products and to provide a better experience to its consumers. Once you already have an available device, you can check this article: msft.it/6052bI4Na for steps on how to send feedback via the Windows Feedback Hub. This is the quickest route to our developers' ears.
You are welcome to post here if you have other Microsoft-related concerns. Keep safe!

Thank you for the information you shared. For insights, some common causes of the error 0xc00000e are problems like corruption or deletion of files in the Boot Configuration Database (BCD), which includes files and parameters that help to boot Windows. Hard disk failures can also cause this error. Let's further look into this.
Can you confirm if you have informed the repair shop where you have your SSD installed about the error message you are getting and how to resolve it?

Hello! We truly appreciate your efforts in contacting us regarding your inquiry about installing Windows 10 installation media on a new SSD, and if it will ask for a product key. We know how important this is to you, please allow us to further assist you on this matter.
To answer your question, depending on how you will be going to use it, if you will use the installation media to perform a clean install and that a Windows license is already linked and associated to your device, then it will automatically be detected by the system so you don’t need to input the product key manually. On the other hand, if no Microsoft license is linked on your device, then most probably it will ask you to enter one. Nevertheless, please make sure to secure one, just in case the system requires it.
Furthermore, during set up, you can also opt to add a product key later by selecting the “I don’t have a product key” or the “Do this later” option.

Thanks for the additional information. We understand that you attempted to boot using PXE/IPv4 and IPv6, however it did not work. We know how you want to resolve it. Allow us to assist you further.
If you are experiencing issues with booting your Windows 10 computer using PXE/IPv4 and IPv6, there could be several reasons for this. One possible reason is that the boot order in your BIOS settings might have been changed or corrupted. You can try resetting your BIOS settings to default values by following the steps here: msft.it/60599aek5
If resetting the BIOS settings doesn’t work, you can try disabling IPv6 in the boot priority settings. Here’s how you can do it:
      1. Open the BIOS settings on your computer.
      2. Navigate to the “Boot” section.
      3. Locate the “Boot Option Priorities” setting and select it.
      4. Find the “Onboard NIC (IPv6)” option and disable it.
      5. Save your changes and exit the BIOS settings.
We hope this helps! Please keep us posted.

I have a corrupt OS and need to do a fresh install. There are some things I just can't seem to fix so a fresh install is the only way.
If I use the official Microsoft tool to create a windows installation media on a fresh USB, is it going to draw files from the current corrupt OS or solely use a fresh internet ISO it will download whilst making it? I have just spent an hour on Google and it seems to be impossible to find an answer to this, but maybe I am using the wrong search terms. Does anyone know? The corrupt install came from a windows 11 USB created with RUFUS, so I obviously don't want to use that again and will use the official Microsoft tool - what is happening currently is that after settings has been opened once, let's say for example to change a graphics setting or view windows update, once I have closed the settings window, if I try to open it again I just get a blank white page with the gear icon centered but nothing else. I've used every trick in the book to repair it, terminate and restart via admin command line, etc but nothing works until I reboot then I can use it one time again.
Once I have tried to close it, I can see the settings app still stays open in task manager and trying to terminate the process doesn't work. It can not be shut down, period. That's the issue that I got with a Rufus created install media using the latest windows 11 ISO, and I have tested the iso itself and it is 100% flawless and corruption free. So the issue must have happened with Rufus.
Obviously I want to use the Microsoft install media tool now but I am concerned it will draw files from the corrupted current OS install. Why is it impossible to find an answer to this?

Hi there, Teddy! Thanks for reaching out. Let's take a look into your concern and assist you the best way we can.
Your question on whether creating a Windows installation media on a fresh USB would draw files from the current corrupt OS, the answer to that is no. Just make sure to download the files from the official website: msft.it/6054gt0v8 and to use a totally different USB.
We hope we have answered your question. Please feel free to message us back if you still need further help. Thanks.

@@MicrosoftCustomerSupport Thanks. So I use the create windows 11 installation media tool and a fresh USB. The reason I asked is, for example, Microsoft says that it can only create a tool in the language of your current OS. That's fine, but why that limitation if it is not copying files from your current install onto the new USB media?
That's what threw me and didn't make sense to me. If it's an all fresh installation that is made, I would hope it was downloading files solely from the internet TO make that install disk. And just to confirm, you are saying that's indeed what is happening, all clean files used to make the USB installer, yes? And thank you by the way.

PS why use a totally different USB when I can delete all partitions on this one, then create a brand new single partition that spans the entire USB drive, and format it? @MicrosoftCustomerSupport  Год назад

Hi, Pranav. Thanks for commenting, and we understand that you want to know if you will lose your Windows license if you downgrade your preinstalled Windows 11 to Windows 10. We’re here to help you, and please allow us to provide the following information:
Yes, it is definitely possible to downgrade to Windows 10 from a preinstalled Windows 11. Regardless, you should make sure that you confirm with the vendor or OEM where you got the device regarding your Windows licensing information. Once confirmed, you can downgrade to Windows 10 by either using the Windows 10 installation file or creating an installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file).
We’d also like to set your expectations that since you have preinstalled Windows 11, there may be apps, programs, and drivers that will not work in Windows 10 due to compatibility issues. If you downgrade, you will not lose your Windows license because you’re just reinstalling Windows on the same device and hardware with which your license is associated, but we still recommend that you make sure that your Windows license is associated with your Microsoft account before downgrading.
May we know why you want to downgrade to Windows 10?
We’re looking forward to your reply.
