  • To see what's so remarkable about seals and sea lions, dive in with caretakers at Smithsonian's National Zoo. They'll show us how they interact with these intelligent creatures and introduce us to a special gray seal who's also a U.S. Navy veteran.

    Just read up on this story; Selkie died earlier this year at 43 years old. Sorry for your loss, zookeepers.
    RIP Selkie
    That said, did the other seals visibly mourn?

    Why does the Navy have a marine mammal program? Just wondering.

      That was back in Cold War days, they had a lot of dumber programs than this

      KulinBan777 Including one bizarre experiment which they tried to teach dolphins how to speak English.

      Spotted Hyena because they attached bombs to them and sent them on suicide missions

      So they don't have to hold tools in their own mouths

    if Silky is 41 why not let her retire? looks like she has a lot of scaring , what from?

      Retire from what and to where?

    • @hyenaedits3460
      @hyenaedits3460 9 лет назад

      It could be just discoloration. Many animals change color with age. Humans and dogs get grey hair, for example.

      Spotted Hyena not to mention alteration in skin surface...

      GorillaGuerilla I think Linda was under the impression these Seals perform tricks like those at Sea World, rather than basic training for health check ups. It's actually a testament to how well they treat her if she's still functioning well with Cataracts.

      Retire? Heck no! She has lots of energy and is eager to cooperate in behaviours as shown in the video. Making her stop doing that is really stressfull and traumatic for the animal. Having all this interaction and activity and suddendly not having it is really damaging for the animal's psychological health.

    im sorry but i think having seals at zoos is so dumb, unless its super rare or if your landlockd why would you need to see one of the most popular mamals at a zoo, theres millions out there on the beaches but what ever

      Pinnipeds also live far longer/healthier lives in captivity, usually about 17-25 in the wild, while hitting 30-40s in zoos and aquariums.
