I know there were some concerns about heating from earlier reviews. Ide like to address this issue has been fixed. Anbernic has added a lot of thermal padding to the inside on all newer units, and we no longer have this issue. If you'd like to see proof, I'll do a dedicated video doing a teardown to show the processor and all the thermal padding on the backshell but Im also sure you can find this on youtube already.
how is the quality control for anbernic devices? I have read some stories in reddit about buttons not working properly after a little bit of gameplay or even stuck at loading screen after upgrading sd cards
Finally, someone who agrees with me. I think the 40XX is the best of the cheaper handhelds and it all comes down to that nice 4 inch screen. It’s like having a little mini 4:3 CRT TV in the palm of your hand, and with a really good CRT filter It really does come the closest to making the games look like they used to look like on our old TVs back in the day.
Yeah this seems the best middle ground for everything, probably this (together with Anbernic flooding the market with tons of alternatives) has put this one a little in the shadow, but it's probably the best one overall
Fully agreed, I own a trimui smart pro, but this one is more comfortable and 16:9 doesn’t make a lot of sense for most retro games. And it’s far more comfortable to the RG35XXH. Although that one wins in pocket factor. Personally I love MuOS on these devices. Knulli feels a bit too much for this device
@ in general I like the more simplistic approach of muOS. The Emulation Station front end never really got me. And typically I just want to dive quickly in some games and I feel navigating MuOS is just easier and quicker and has a lot of themes. I’m using a minUI like theme but with the added benefits of running it on muOS. It boots quick, battery life is great and has been super solid. And you can just pop in the SD card to load it with files. But Knulli is also very solid!
@okayman81 I was surprised by it, too. I thought Ide like the V better because I usually love verticals, but this one really blew me away. Everything about it is actually so good.
With most retro gaming channels effectively copying and pasting Russ’ reviews from Retro Game Corps, it’s refreshing to see your take on this handheld. It really highlights Ambernics forte, releasing a million handhelds so that everyone can find something that suits them.
Well, I've been absolutely loving my RG 353V since I got it, but this little Doohickey makes me want to get another one! It looks like it's much more comfortable to hold and that screen does look really good !!
Makes sense. I was seriously considering an RG35XXH as my first device before this came out. For anyone who's not looking for a certain form factor and wants as many tools disposable
I think it's really personal preference at this point. I don't own the 40xxH personally, but I genuinely like the design. My favorite console I bought last year is the RG cube, and it wasn’t super expensive, especially second-hand hand it's really easy to find great deals. I own 9 Anbernics, among those two from the XX series, which are the 28XX and SP xx. I absolutely adore the 28XX, and it is my most played retro console of 2024, oddly I didn't think it would beat the SP in this sense. I could easily say that the 28xx is my favorite one. However the RG cube seems like the best compromise so far for consoles that really matter to me such as DS, 3DS and Game Cube, and I really dig the design to death. I do think, however, if I really cared and would suggest one best console that really gives you the most all-encompassing experience for retro gaming, I would probably say Retroid Pocket 5 or the mini version of it. It is more expensive yes, but it will give you longevity and top notch performance, so you won't miss out on what emulation has to offer. The reason why I wouldn't recommend 40xx as much, is because anything above Ps1 really does struggle and there are many cheaper alternatives by now which do the exact same job and sometimes even better. The RG351P for example is easy to find for less than 50 bucks and the Retroid Pocket 3 + and Retroid Pocket 2s are easy to get for up to 100 bucks, but I've seen these for even less and they can emulate up to game cube decently and even some PS2. The only reason I see to get one from the XX series, is because the OS is decent, or because of Knulli or MuOS, but most importantly because of the retro factor of their almost 1:1 throwback designs to the original consoles! The SP and the GBA for example really hit the nail and are worth having for their form factor alone. I will agree that the XX are otherwise quite affordable new, and are decent quality. I think the XX are cool as a first purchase, or as a gift, an indulgence or really because of the retro dmg form factor, but I disagree that it is the best choice as a one fits all or as the only handheld one would need, which is debatable. If I had to choose only one handheld console of all these retro emulation handhelds it would probably be either the retroid pocket 5, or the Anbernic RG Cube (or rg 406h), or the Ayn Odin 2. I really love my 28xx, and I really loved the Bittboy pocket go which got me heavily into a black hole of retro handhelds, and it certainly is one of the most played by now, along with the RG351P, but realistically, I would choose the RG cube over them, even the Retroid Pocket 3+, just because I care about performance and having as big of a catalog as possible. I also own the Steam Deck, but since it is a console in its own right beyond emulation, I don't consider as a retro gaming handheld in the same manner as Anbernic or Retroid. If all you care is emulation to Playstation and don't prioritize retro gaming as much, miyoo mini or any of the XX series will do, but personally for me, it won't cut, and it's more of accessory to a main console or a collectible at this point. N64 and Dreamcast alone are worth having flawless performance, and XX struggle at that.
@paperoverflow First of all, thanks for your comment. I really appreciate you joining the conversation. I tried to be as objective as possible with this video. Deciding which handheld would be right for most people. I think Android requires a lot of initial setup that I know will turn off a lot of people. For the majority of people new to the hobby or outside the hobby, I believe a linux device is the better option. Lower end emulation is a lot more user friendly afterall and requires little to no tinkering to get going. Higher end emulation like GC and PS2 often requires setting configurations and the like to get working perfectly. I dont want to recommend something that I have to teach of enable wifescreen hacks, etc. I want to recommend something thats plug & play right out the box and that can if you more if you want to put in the effort. For example, adding your own games, flashing your own firmware, optimizing settings for a system you really enjoy playing. Stuff that is easy and that anyone can do that will not confuse or frustrate them. I think an RP5 is better as a second device like after you've had something on the lower end, and now you want to dip your feet into something more powerful that comes with some more know-how. Also this video is of course subjective. Some could argue that another XX is better but in my eyes it check off all the boxes in every department and delivers a play experience like nothing else.
This will be next my handheld, perfect for N64 and Twin stick arcade titles and fighting games. Right now I'm hooked on my RG35XXSP and perfecting all games to run properly on KNULLI FIREFLY. Its my chill time gaming device. I play it more than my Nintendo Switch.
I like my handhelds vertical because I like to play laying on my side in bed and verticals are more comfortable for that, but this one is the best one in general terms mostly because all those extra features like wifi, bluetooth, hdmi... That console does it all and does the main thing very well (good controls, form format, etc)
Really torn between the 40XXH and the 35XXH. Dig the design of the 40, but the recessed sticks on the 35 are just too perfect. How much better is the 40 over the 35? Thanks.
I understand why you like this handheld so much. For me it didn't work so well. I felt the buttons are too soft and lack proper feedback, so it's hard to be precise; the d-pad is on the extra stiff side, as a lot of Anbernic handhelds. Also, it gets a bit hot sometimes. I think the RG CubeXX or 40XXV are better options with better controls, but less pocketable ones.
I have both. I love the Trimui and I love CrossMix but the RG40XXH just feels better. Screen looks crisper. The RG35XXH was my first retro-handheld since the GP2X and I love it but the RG40XXH just feels like the premium upgrade. Sticks feel better, build quality feels better and the screen is chef's kiss!
This is like a trimui smart pro that's less wide (4:3 content will be the same size) and has better sound. PSP performance may be a little lower but the difference is not significant. Sticks are not great but more replaceable than on trimui smart pro
100x Yes I would choose this over the TrimUI Smart Pro. First biggest reason is the 4:3 aspect ratio vs 16:9 on the TSP. 4:3 is the ideal ratio for retro gaming. Second biggest reason is the controls mostly the joystick are much better than the TSP but also the controls in general. The dpad and action buttons are bigger and they are more traditional membrane controls like they were on original hardware. Lastly the processor doesnt geneate as much heat as the processor on the TSP.
Hi! I have 40xxv and a trimui Smart pro but now I want to try 40xxH because it looks more comfortable. Worth it? I just play 4.3 ratio games and also I have a case for 405M, both consoles have almost the same size so I think It'll fit. Thank you 💪🏼🎮
I think trimui smart pro is kinda better , has a slightly better performance with psp games like tekken 6 and god of war, the cross is perfect for street fighter games , and better bigger screen on the other hand anbernic makes it hard to perform special moves like hadoken. The only disadvantage on trimui is the missing hdmi and the wrong placement of the speaker , since its behind the cover and sounds a bit dull.
I am in the market for one as we speak and could use your help with a question...does this have hdmi out? And if so, if you put it on a bigger screen or TV, does the definition stay the same as what that IPS screen is or can it be made higher definition? After research it seems if I want higher definition on a tv I'll need a more expensive one, but maybe I'm wrong. Thanks man
Im thinking about to pick one of these or a trimui brick, i already have a mm+ but i dont like the screen quality. The screen on 40xx is better than brick? Even with brick having 768p resolution x 480 on this 4" screen?
I'd say the screen on the 40xx is better just because of the size. We have to remember we use to all play these games on massive 30 inch tvs. Even 480p on a 4" display is really good.
for me too this is the best choice, I just hope that for the next generation anbernic can choose a more performing but still economical chipset, I would use the tiger t310, for example, the one used on retroid pocket 2, I tested that chipset deeply and it can emulate very well everything up to the psp and sega saturn as well, without any problems, it is also very economical as a chipset, for me it would be an excellent choice for the xx line of the next generation.
I use my steam deck for last and current gen titles/rogue lites/likes, couch shit. This will be my retro console and my pocket edc is the trimui brick. I’m in a good place emotionally 😅
Was all set to pull the trigger on this one but getting drawn t’ward the RG406H. With the superior chip set I feel having that greater flexibility might be the way to go. What’s your thoughts?
Totally agree. But again it comes down to flexibility and I guess having the reassurance of that extra performance hit when required. Take one of my all time favorite MAME titles for example Killer Instinct. I doubt the 40XX would be able to handle this game.
I was thinking of getting one of these my only reservations about buying from Ali Express is that i ordered an Odin 2 and got a cheap Chinese toy. How do I know they wont send me an early unit that overheats?
@@nickoldschoolrules52 Couple things. Always pay with Paypal on aliexpress. For your protection and so you dont get scammed. Then you can do a chargeback if they dont send what they said. Always buy from reputable stores. Store with names and high sales. Less than 1000 sales is a no go for me
Thanks, I did pay by PayPal. Having sent the evidence to Ali Express it was still a surprisingly long winded process. It was very stressful too but I did get my refund in the end. I should have looked into the seller better. I do really like the look of this handheld, the 4" screen especially. I want it mostly for PS1.
I have a 35xxh, If the chipset on this were better I’d have gotten one and sold the 35xxh. Maybe next year. I just want better Dreamcast performance and 4” display 4:3. I don’t want to spend more than $100 either. I know the RG406h is out and that would be great but not at the price point I want.
@sharpdad33 It can handle a lot of PSP. I personally dont love PSP on here just because it makes the screen small, but you can always stretch it. And yes, I love Knulli. This last update added, so maybe quality of life features like the fixing of cardinal snapping, making the rgb light work, the ability to customize hotkeys, and soo much more. It's the best for me because I love the emulation station frontend. But the best software is the one that's right you for you know. Some people love stock some love MuOS, some MinUI, its all preference and whats important for you.
i am palying on this device..my question is that, why is it when i totally turn it off and later tomorrow when i turn it back on, the batery was reduced / consumed (lol)..any idea what is wrong??im on knulli by the way
@MalcolmLim What can I say it the best color lol jk It was actually an error they were supposed to send grey but they sent black. So I said whatever and rolled with it
Good review , i've tried Kulli but the battery drain seems to still be an issue even with the latest update , i'm trying MUos but that seems to have issues with N64 emulation i might just stick with stock as that updated recently
Ive been watching mine after you told me about this and I havent experienced this issue. Like when I turn the device back on its at the same percentage I had last left it. So im not sure what's going on
@ That is strange i've tried sticking with EXT 4 and still have the issue only thing i can think of is i used Rufus to flash it when it's meant to be Retro pie so maybe that's causing an issue ?
@jonlensd Its an improved 35XXH. Bigger screen, more comfortable, sticks dont hurt, stacked shoulder buttons, menu button on the face vs on top on the 35, but also at the cost of slightly less battery life.
a different way of review but actually very straigth forward... Love it Question: which console do you recomend for long play times?. I have Rgcubexx and already fuck*d up my wrist xd
Alot of reason. Better Display. Dpad centric, alot better price, its plastic which is better than metal, stacked shoulder buttons, linux based not android, shape is more ergonomic, probably more I cant remember everything
@ You really touted this device. Mentioning that a lot of those systems’ libraries run real well, but showed no gameplay. That’s why I’d like to see a follow-up, companion piece to this video. Thanks. I like the GTA footage but not seeing much in the way of action (ie. blowing up a few cars out running the cops) doesn’t tell us much in terms of whether this has real issues. How do you think this device (in terms of performance) matches up against the Powkiddy X55? Not withstanding the dubious handheld quality builds that Powkiddy are known for.
@spiritualED You're absolutely correct. The reason I didn't include more gameplay was because that was beyond the scope of this video I had a strict time frame of how long I wanted this video to be and I didn't want to push it beyond that. So I'll i'll do exactly that I'm gonna make a performance dedicated video just testing the RG40XX to it limits
@ I think your fantastic. There’s so many units the rabbit hole gets REAL. But you just plainly get down to what’s what. Saved me so much time happy holidays
I've been thinking about getting this or CubeXX. How's the temperature while playing games on 40XXH? I heard it gets warm pretty fast and to the point of being uncomfortable, and all of that while playing rather basic games.
Anbernic had addressed this all newer unit have thermal padding and are well insulated so very little heat is transfered to the outside. Even my original RG40XXH I never had this issue even when playing more demanding stuff.
The criticism this handheld got for "heating up" was so random. For one, all my devices heat up. It's what multi core, multi GHz processors do. Most of my handhelds heat up more than this. Eg, TrimUI Smart Pro, RG353m, ... Secondly, the reason you feel it on this device more than on some h700 devices is that it isn't dumping all its heat into the battery. As long as reviewers dump on anbernic for not using the battery as a heat spreader, the more they're gonna use the battery as a heat spreader.
@Autotrope It's the dumbest critism ever. People just want something to complain about. They use the battery as a heatsink on the sp its a problem, they dont do that "its gets warm now". Where are they supposed to put the processor?!?!? Its so frustrating. This is a budget handheld, you know. At this point people just need to complain about something.
lol ive bought 2 the 351p after highschool and the 556 after college stll my only 2 hand helds thinking of getting the sp or the advance doe so at that point i would feel bad embrassed like honestly look dub af xD
I ordered my RG40XX H after watching your video (and a few others) since it's very convincing. However, I just got it today and damn, all I wanted was to play my arcade fbneo shmups on this thing and I can't get any of those roms to work, I even tried downloading MAME roms but that didn't work either. I'm currently installing the new stock firmware on another sd card. It came with the 1.05. Has anyone else had this issue and been able to solve it? If this doesn't work I'll have to look into that MuOS
I would love any hand held I haven't bought one myself because I don't know what to start so I simply use my pixel 7a with a kishi controller for retro gaming. If you sell or give away please let me know I would greatly appreciate it.
See, I just don't agree that the budget handhelds are the ones with all the magic. They're great. 100%. I love my rg28xx and the fact that they come in a bunch of different sizes, but if you compare this one to like, the rp mini, minus the slightly smaller screen, one of them is clearly better, imo. Caveat is that it costs 200 dollars.
@Patrick-bn5rp I wish they were more affordable, brother. Not everyone can do the 200 plus shipping sometimes more in other countries. That's why I prefer the XXs ya know more accessible but thats probably going to change soon maybe this year we'll get gamecube and ps2 under $100 who knows
@@JaviPlayRetroI have my doubts that we'll get PS2 under 100 this year simply because Anbernic is still selling their PS2 capable android devices for 160. And even then, those devices with their t820 chipsets struggle a bit with PS2 and GameCube at points, so you have to do some tinkering at times. Though... Maybe those t820 devices will get discounted a bunch? 🤔
I try to be as objective as possible with this recommendation. I think there are pros and cons to both. The ergonomics on the cube are better, of course, and the size makes it more comfortable, but it comes at the cost of portability and bulk. Also 4:3 is a really important aspect ratio because a lot of systems play very close to 4:3 better than 1x1 on the cube. PS, N64, MD, SMS, DC, and more are 4:3 systems. Take, for example, GBA. Massive black bars on the 1x1. Or take, for example, PSP even worse. At least on 4:3, the black bars are minimal. But the same could be said the other way around. GBC, GB, GG SNES, and NES all benefit from 1x1, so it some aspects, the cube is definitely better. So it's like you said what do YOU want to play that will determine which is a better choice for you.
@Aygross Joystick are much better. 4:3 screen is better for retro systems. H700 processor is not as hot. Anbernic buttons and dpad feel better. Alot of reasons but those are the biggest for me.
Great video. The fact it's a bit smaller than a PSP makes it aces to me. Got one arriving in the mail in the next couple of days. Might finally have a reason to play Stardew Valley
You're gonna love it. I have a save on here almost done with year 1 and almost completed the community center. It's such a great device for ports and especially stardew valley.
Idk i have a r36s right now, and i don't see much of a reason to buy this one, because performance ± same, stereo speakers - cool, but not so important, specially when they on a grip place😅 rgb light on sticks - waste of 🔋 time in my opinion 🤷 So i don't see a reason to buy this one model. And i don't see the prise, r36s is around 25-30$ on AliExpress, and it have a very big and good community, it's mean a lot of OS, theme, settings for better performance and else.
Also wifi without android and browser - almost useless, and minihdmi - stupid like idea on handheld console😅 because if u wanna put it to the tv or monitor - use ur laptop of xbox and play in better performance and not on 480p resolution (because if you change it on 720p or higher - it will blow up this sht)
I know there were some concerns about heating from earlier reviews. Ide like to address this issue has been fixed.
Wow! I thought my collection was big.
Love the 40xxh but CubeXX stole my heart.
Great Video my friend.
40XXH is awesome. Currently running MU OS, but when I ran knulli on the 28XX I got better N64 performance, so I may end up going that direction.
Interested in picking up one of these. Is everything on AliExpress new? Or are some used?
Knulli setup guide please
Why would you remove the stick from the RG40xxV?
I agree if you prefer horizontal handheld. I think the Trimui Brick would also be the 1a 1b choice for vertical around that same price.
So you would choose this over the Trimui smart pro?
Bigger screen? I don’t know, even I preferred the 35xxh than this
I have both.
I would
This is like a trimui smart pro that's less wide (4:3 content will be the same size) and has better sound.
Holy handhelds Batman !!
Thanks man
You got so many handhelds. 👍
Is the overheating issue fixed with this handheld?
Anbernic rg40xx H vs Trimui Smart Pro vs Anbernic rxcubexx?
I like this idea alot. Will keep in mind for future video
Whats the SO on other RG40XX H?
Can you play advance wars from the GBA section ? Thank you in advance
I thought about getting this but the no grip handle turned me away.
Even 480p on a 4" display is really good.
hey there! which console do you wear on your neck? thank you
@@kbaigio RG Nano
I just like the dpad on the cube xx
@@PlasmaSnake369 thats fair. It is a really nice dpad
how to change the RGB light color?
for me too this is the best choice, I just hope that for the next generation anbernic can choose a more performing but still economical chipset, I would use the tiger t310, for example, the one used on retroid pocket 2, I tested that chipset deeply and it can emulate very well everything up to the psp and sega saturn as well, without any problems, it is also very economical as a chipset, for me it would be an excellent choice for the xx line of the next generation.
Yeah would be great, but I think that chip is android only, correct? Bit less "console like", probably
I also have a lot of handhelds and the RG40XXH is really the one to get if you can only get one budget device. Happy new year btw!
I use my steam deck for last and current gen titles/rogue lites/likes, couch shit. This will be my retro console and my pocket edc is the trimui brick. I’m in a good place emotionally 😅
Thank you for this video as always. I have one question - how to stream pc games to this device with knulli?
waited long for a device that chekt my boxes this was the one love it more than my wife
@@mcgoastface I laughed too hard at this
Was all set to pull the trigger on this one but getting drawn t’ward the RG406H. With the superior chip set I feel having that greater flexibility might be the way to go. What’s your thoughts?
I think the most important question you want to ask yourself is do you want to play 3D games or 2D games primarily. Specifically GameCube and PS2
Totally agree. But again it comes down to flexibility and I guess having the reassurance of that extra performance hit when required. Take one of my all time favorite MAME titles for example Killer Instinct. I doubt the 40XX would be able to handle this game.
Question how is it on running PS1 games? because I did have some little issues with PS1 games on the Anbernic RG35XXSP.
Hell yeah! This is my favorite too
I love my RGB30s bc they're customizable.
Trimui SP is great too
I have a 35xxh, If the chipset on this were better I’d have gotten one and sold the 35xxh. Maybe next year. I just want better Dreamcast performance and 4” display 4:3. I don’t want to spend more than $100 either. I know the RG406h is out and that would be great but not at the price point I want.
I just ordered one from Aliexpress 54.99 plus tax free shipping. I'm patiently waiting
So you suggest Knulli? Can it handle PSP? Was looking to buy this style today and boom…here you are. Ha
I have the RG40xx H too. I use Knulli, this software looks very good, but it is so slow and laggy 😢 Any tipps for Knulli to improve it?

Why not PSP-style front-facing speakers?
I feel like trimui smart pro is equally as good. You can play widescreen on it yet pocketable.
What are the widescreen platforms that play well with this level of hardware?

Why do you have two same colored 40XXH? puzzling :)

Happy New Year Javier
Thanks, Happy New Year! 👾👾👾👾👾
I love the RG40XX h with Knulli, but if I compare the built quality and performance with the old RG353PS, the RG353PS is much more better 😮
How do you compare it to the 35 xx h?
@jonlensd Its an improved 35XXH. Bigger screen, more comfortable, sticks dont hurt, stacked shoulder buttons, menu button on the face vs on top on the 35, but also at the cost of slightly less battery life.
Can you wake this console up by turning on a paired controller?
No, as far as I know. I tried it today when testing Hdmi out
a different way of review but actually very straigth forward... Love it
Question: which console do you recomend for long play times?. I have Rgcubexx and already fuck*d up my wrist xd
If the RGCubexx gives you hand cramps you may need something like RG556 that has more grip for your hands
Imagine a r inch rg40xxsp with 2 joysticks, better battery and but thinner. Itwill be the perfect xx endgame
@INhumanLAST That would be dope
Why did You Choose rg40xx over the „better quality“ rg405m, just Display?
Alot of reason. Better Display. Dpad centric, alot better price, its plastic which is better than metal, stacked shoulder buttons, linux based not android, shape is more ergonomic, probably more I cant remember everything
could you please make a setup guide for this one? 🙏

How’s about you do a follow-up video to this and really sink your teeth into some Dreamcast, PSP and N64 gameplay?
I like the idea. Putting it on my content planner
So I'll i'll do exactly that I'm gonna make a performance dedicated video just testing the RG40XX to it limits
i have the rg35xx h , im gonna get this next
Sir…..CAN you download a web browser and add games on the unit without a pc?
It's not android base, you can get the rp3 instead.
It runs GTA Vice City. But can it run Doom?
lol ive bought 2 the 351p after highschool and the 556 after college stll my only 2 hand helds thinking of getting the sp or the advance doe so at that point i would feel bad embrassed like honestly look dub af xD
Great review
How about overheat issues in this 40xx H?
Anbernic has addressed this with a lot of thermal padding on the inside of the handheld. This is not an issue anymore, like early units.
Depends on what console you want to play but to me rgxx cube is better with screen and ergonomics
@JaviPlayRetro actually without the rgcube xx. 40xxh is my top recommendation as well
Why this over the tsp?
@Aygross Joystick are much better. 4:3 screen is better for retro systems. H700 processor is not as hot. Anbernic buttons and dpad feel better. Alot of reasons but those are the biggest for me.
Speaker quality is a lot better too on this. Not many people comment on that.
Need to stop buying handhelds and upgrade that phone 😂
@Wes.jumpss Thats not my personal phone its a work phone. Im not paying for that lol my boss is
Completamente de acuerdo
