Great video. I'm on the same page with so many of your points, opinions, and preferences. But dude, it totally threw me at the end because at 34:51, instead of "Anbernic 406H" you accidentally said "Retroid Pocket 406H" and I thought I missed something.

Nice video Vlad! The RG35XXH and RG40XXH are amazing and great devices for the pricepoint. Love to play them but I have an Odin 2 Pro and this beast is everything I need. So much fun and good times with it. See you next year! Enjoy the days with your family and take care. ❤ :D
Inflation! Sort of... Too many releases, it got lost in the crowd Anbernic is creating. I don't have one yet, but it really seems the most balanced one.
You travel / fall in love / invest / work / poop WTF ?!? LOL 1) Travel - Yep good use case for a retro handheld 2) Falling in love - who you fall in love with might get jealous of the handheld 3) Invest - Maybe not a good idea to be playing retro games whilst deciding where to invest your money 4) Work - Yep just don't let the boss see you 5) Poop - Best use case for a retro handheld in this list of really wacky suggestions LOL Great video Vlad as always :)
Vlad happy holidays, these are great choices. The RG35XXH is a special device to me. The pocketability, the buttons all just function well. I am enjoying the RGcubeXX, with MuOS and interchangeably swapping the Rom SD card so i can play in different form factors and aspect ratios. The CubeXX has probably the most quiet and accurate buttons, Dpad buttons out of the XX line. Seems it just gets better with each version. Hope you like the 34XX.
I think it will, tbh. At this point, a lot of folks interested in handhelds already have handhelds, so the only option to make people keep getting new ones is raw, actual innovation. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I expect 2025 to be better (in terms of handhelds) than 2024. ❤️
I have 35xxH and Trimui Smart Pro. Love 35xx H for its portability and multi functionality (hdmi out / wifi 5 for moonlight and sticks!). The H also has the perfect size and shape to put in pocket imo. TSP on the other hand has the best screen period at the $50 price point (and often $40 during sales). TSP has become my dedicated portmaster / moonlight / PSP / 16:9 hack machine over the last few months!
There's definitely a lot of potential in the TSP! Still, the RG35XX H will always be special to me. You're 100% on point btw, it's literally the most pocketable horizontal Anbernic Linux handheld!
I'm sure glad someone else liked the RG40XX H as much as I did! It's been my everyday main handheld for the last few months and I absolutely love it for PS1 and below! For all the higher end analog stick focused systems I use an RG556, for it's comfortable ergonomics and big gorgeous AMOLED screen =)
Excellent video. I really appreciate all the personal bits about your experiences and why you personally like them. This is a video by a nerd for nerds. 👍👍
I bet between all those, that the tsp, the rp5mini, the cubexx, and the 40xxH have the least rattling. 🤔 I think your 40xxh pick is understandable. It's solid. I think my top linux handheld is still an older one. With Anbernics regression in Linux power and opting for 1gb ram on everything across the board linux wise, my fav device is still one of the best powerwise and that's my rg353M. 2gb ram isn't much in 2024 but you can feel the difference on these handhelds. Especially with PortMaster..that extra 1gb often helps
I’ve been rocking my Odin 2 Pro, but I wanted to get my gf something somewhat similar in power - but not as expensive. I ended up getting us both a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro each - I’m excited to check it out!
This is brilliant, subbed. My fave is my RG353v, I can't explain but it just feels so good at early retro. I also own the original RG Cube, but there is just something about the 353v. I think it is me remembering how much I played my gameboy. I also own a steam deck. For me the steam deck is for playing retro PC games and the odd modern multiplayer online fun type games ( fall guys and so on ) I think I am going to get the RP5 next, but I might get the 35XX because of my gameboy addiction.
The 1:1 screen should be amazing for vertical arcade games, like shmups, and something like Ikaruga in vertical mode. Many of those arcade titles, like Cave shooters, will not run well on the SOC the Linux handhelds use. I suspect the Cube (non xx) would be good for those. I'm not really going to get one for that though. Especially since Pico 8 isn't supported on Android devices. I'm considering the Cubexx for Pixo 8 and such though, and if I do I will try Ikaruga vertical mode because it's something I really love. But I haven't ordered one yet. Will click your affiliate link if I do. :)
I love all of my devices, the TrimUI Smart Pro is just great with Crossmix. The Miyoo A30 is great with Spruce 3.0, my R36S is such a great device with ArkOS that I bought a second, only to find out that the second is a clone and really a K36, but still great now I have put the correct firmware on it. Lastly is the first console I bought which was a Boyhom M17, I have updated the firmware on it and it is still my go to handheld when cooking and waiting for my wife outside shops, it has been dropped many times without damage, I think its bomb proof ;) :) I am currently waiting for a black PowKiddy X55 to arrive, I love tinkering with all of these Linux devices which I bought from Aliexpress without any issues. Thank you for a great roundup, I totally enjoyed the off the cuff chat, thank you for sharing.
Great video! I agree about the rg35xx H being fantastic, and I'm getting the 40xx H for Christmas. One thing I disagree with is that I think the 28xx is a great option to take around in your pocket. I really like the design and the small buttons and dpad don't bother me.
You did dirty to the 28XX. I guess it’s unconventional, but it has an amazing battery life, supports muos (instant hibernate yay!) and doesn’t overheat at all unlike the a30. I had both, and even with spruce 3.2 the a30 was horribly warm even after 10 minutes playing nes.
I think Odin 2 and mini would replace the retroids, if u want a bigger screen and stronger specs(snapdragon 8 gen 2) but also a lot more expensive.. People can just buy an ally or deck at this price. But the Odin mini seems good, Odin 2 seems too big. that I would use a phone+android controller snap on combo instead.
@@georgepierre3594 I recently just got my Odin 2 and I love it. Takes a while to get up and running. But now it's a dream. It's such a high quality product. I am very impressed. I considered the ally. But I really am not going to play any AAA games on a handheld. I'd rather just use my PC to play these intense games. I think the price was a bit high for the Odin, but the battery life was the main selling point for me. I've gotten up to 8 hours on this bad boy emulating switch.
I mean, it's sort of a compliment, I guess. For context, I'm Romanian (think Transylvania, Dracula, all that good stuff), so I do have an Eastern European accent. A lot of folks know English quite well over here.
I had an rg556. Amazing handheld with one massive problem. It was massively let down by awful sticks. No point in playing PS2/ GameCube games- it ruined them and made the games hard to play. I am surprised that this isn't mentioned.
Going to disagree on the 28XX H and Miyoo A30. I have both, and I think the A30 still doesn't have good software, just less bad. And given the lack of proper shader support due to its chipset, it's just DOA for me, no matter how big and comfy its buttons are. It's just not pleasant to use. Meanwhile, being able to put Knulli on the 28XX completely makes that system. The small controls aren't the best for long play sessions, but a device like that is better suited to just keep with you at all times and whip it out for quick sessions at a moment's notice anyway. But I'm going to BIG agree on the 40XX H. It's literally a perfect device for its price and performance tier, they made all the right decisions, right down to the digital triggers. And to me it makes sense to think of it as a full-on replacement for the 35XX H, because it sacrifices nothing in exchange for its improvements. No, not even pocketability. It's such a small increase in size that, even with the flared triggers, it still slides in and out of my pocket just as easily as the 35XX H, regardless of which trousers I'm rocking that day. And the bigger screen is a total gamechanger. Half an inch sounds so small, but the instant you see on-screen text, it just clicks how substantial that extra real estate truly is. It's such a perfect handheld for the truly old-school retro platforms that I go for it over my RP4 Pro every time unless I'm playing a higher-tier system.
@@VladNerd Very true. That's why, as tough as I'm sure it is for reviewers to keep up with everything out there, I'm glad for the crazy number of options available. Means fewer compromises and more happy gamers.
So you have idk how many thousands of dollars worth of extremely similar e waste handhelds with color variations of the exact same shit...but no odin 2 mini? 😨🤯😵 dude what unholy force of nature is stopping you!??????
@@VladNerdso why not sell a select pick of your junk handhelds that are redundant to own and buy a quality odin 2 mini? The more you showcase junk, the more people will buy junk and the more companies will make junk and the market gets stagnant and oversaturated with crappy handhelds that get pooped out more and more often. Thats just they way it is, a never ending hot dog water feeback loop. It's unhealthy for the hobby. The more you buy and shine the light on turds the more turd-like the industry will be. 🤯
Sorry buddy, but the 28xx is definitely the best handheld of 2024,...hands down, lol. The d-pad is the perfect size for just rocking it to change directions (which makes it almost as good as a stick). The buttons feel great and are a perfect size for a small device (even my big hands can push them comfortably). Compared to my 280m (which has huge buttons and d-pad) its a dream, 'cause now I'm not accidentally pushing the d-pad in when I'm trying to change directions),...bigger doesn't automatically mean better. Plus, after installing Knulli (and changing to a more retro theme) then adding my own songs to the background music, I've got mine set up like an 80's arcade,...which it totally rad dude! If I had to choose just one,...I'm going with my 28! 😀 Now I don't have any Android handhelds,...yet. I've got a Retroid Pocket Mini on the way, which I chose as my first Android because its the smallest one that can play Rogue Leader on GameCube,...plus it looks awesome in black, and I prefer my left stick on the bottom. 😎
I love vlads reviews, but it must be exhausting putting on that accent for all these videos 😂 Im sure Vlad you can speak without that heavy Russian accent, your vocabulary is just too good! 😅
Where to start here: - I'm not Russian, I'm Romanian. 😆 - Romania is however in Eastern Europe, so I do have a pretty heavy accent (all countries around the Balkans have similar accent variations) - The accent is not fake, but nor is it Russian, rather it's an accent specific to the Balkan area. - Regarding my vocabulary: awwww, thanks! 🍻
@ well kudos to you bro! And yes I am very familiar with geography, I am very well traveled, and the accent you have definitely sounds russian which makes sense since you are romanian, my wife is palestinian/romanian so I am very familiar with romanian accents, I have been to romania and spend a lot of time with her romanian mother, all Eastern European accents sound russian since most of them used to actually be Russia. But yea your vocabulary is 👌🏼. Keep the videos coming!
@@IwilltravelforfoodRomania was never part of Russia or the USSR, it was a satellite state, along with many others countries. And there's a clear distinction between accents for those familiar with them, describing all Eastern European accents as "Russian" sounds like a blanket generalization to me. Anyway, I know what you meant was in good faith and wasn't meant to be taken in a negative way. Thanks for the compliment on my vocabulary. :)
@ yea man not negative at all, I actually respect the fact that you have a youtube channel speaking a language that is not your mother tongue. About Romania being a satellite state, same thing, whether officially part of the ussr or not, what ussr said goes, like today, the US is not officially a state of Israel, but what daddy Israel says, the US replies “yes daddy” lol but I digress. I hope you have a Merry Christmas.

I see you comment everywhere and you're always singing the praises of the Razer Edge. There are so many reasons to like that device and so many reasons I want to avoid it. Can you explain why you like it from owning one? Have you ever experienced the SD card jitter issues when using?
@coryyoung1876 Sure... Same thing when everywhere ppl keep saying" Get A Steam Deck"... I could say sounds strange... But anyway...
The Odin 2 Mini is too expensive for my bones. 😆
I never but black and all you buy is black
Now I don't have any Android handhelds,...yet.
Where to start here:
- I'm not Russian, I'm Romanian. 😆
- Romania is however in Eastern Europe, so I do have a pretty heavy accent (all countries around the Balkans have similar accent variations)
- The accent is not fake, but nor is it Russian, rather it's an accent specific to the Balkan area.
Geez that voice... SMH lisp with the accent lol
Not much I can control there. :)
For now...

I see you comment everywhere and you're always singing the praises of the Razer Edge. There are so many reasons to like that device and so many reasons I want to avoid it. Can you explain why you like it from owning one? Have you ever experienced the SD card jitter issues when using?
@coryyoung1876 Sure...
Same thing when everywhere ppl keep saying" Get A Steam Deck"...
I could say sounds strange...
But anyway...
So RaZeR Edge is the only "Android Phablet at the moment with an actual cooling fan system and offers "Micro SD-card Slot to expand your storage...Unlike many Better Cpu Snapdragon running tablets don't offer it and called their products "Latest Gaming Tablet"
1) Red Magic and Lenovo legion Y700 2025...
Wonder why ...
However, RaZeR Edge is the only AMOLED Screen screen Android Gaming tablet...
Unless one want to go with
RETROID POCKET
AYN ODIN 2 PORTAL
AYA-NEO POCKET EVO ....
I know RaZeR messed up on launch ..but now a day is cheaper and has an aggressive CPU/GPU... And you can add any UsB-C or Bluetooth controller + micro SD-card and enjoy your gaming...
But the gaming is mostly about platforms...
X86 WindowS or Linux...
Or Android or iOS...
Happy Gaming Everyone...
😎
@@gregorybolivar5712 I'm torn between the retroid pocket 5 and the razer Edge, but I worry about the SD card jittering which has been causing slow downs. The aspect ratio seems super strange as well
@@coryyoung1876 Well...
I hear you on that...
So far I haven't had issues with the RaZeR Edge that worries me... Also the screen ratio... I just full screen every emulator that I use...
However, the RP-5 is an amazing Device too...
It has the same Snapdragon 865 CPU that my Samsung Galaxy Tab S-7 11inches has since late 2019... The great thing is RP-5 has an actual cooling fan system...and follow the same software approach like AYN ODIN 2 and Portal...
It is a good pick...👍😎
