Many years ago I had a friend who got out of prison, after being locked up for 4 years. When he came by to chill, we all sat around and played Blitz on GameCube. He was so good at it, he kept dominating all of us. When I asked him how’d he get so good, he replied “oh, we played this all the time in the joint”. So, apparently they have consoles in there as well. Go figure!
They don't really have them. But we had corrections officers who brought in a Xbox for the trustee inmates after cleaning carpets about 5 yrs ago in Michigan where I was locked up.
Former convict of North Central in Marion Ohio. Loved this thing! Little fucker helped me through a lot of depression just playing the bootleg tetris game. The one I had was modified to run on a 5 stage ac adapter so it'd bypass needing batteries.
My brother is currently locked up in a prison that allows consoles. He said the game selection is very limited but one of the games he plays most is a prison escape simulator lmao
@@KenKaniff-dw4jw I don't really see the point of lying behind an anonymous account on RUclips over something so trivial lmao. Though I'm not exactly concerned with what you think. To clarify it's not exactly an accurate simulation. Just a cartoony game where you live out prison life and try to escape
As a former correctional officer I seen a lot of the devices you have shown. Except for the typewriter. Inmates also would get hot pots to boil water for ramens and rice. Once they have damaged the hot pot they would remove the heating element and turn their metal shelving into a flat iron grill. They scraped off the paint and attached the element beneath the top shelf and plug it in. Surprisingly it worked very well. Some officers would confiscate these items since they were modified. But, I didn’t sweat the little things that didn’t harm anyone. Now if they start grilling the faces of fellow inmates that may be a concern.
I just did 5 months in my county jail and before I left every inmate was issued a tablet. We were allowed to have them from 8am - 10:30 pm. Now of course they had games you could buy (which I never got since I was leaving soon and didn’t wanna blow my canteen money) but before I left a game that got big between inmates was a sort of old school dungeon crawler game which looked pretty fun honestly. And what you were asking wondering if a device like that would be good entertainment for inmates, by god yes! Other than reading my life kinda revolved around listening to the radio or podcasts on my tablet. So a little device you were showing in your video would mean the world.
Drives me nuts when people expect inmates to just stare at the walls all day. They honestly think that makes for a safe environment for staff and inmates? I'm glad we have shit like this. If anyone reading this is one of those people, FU. I'm a CO. At our prison they are all given tablets and they can purchase TV's for $100. Neither are great, but very serviceable.
It's no wonder crime rate is so high in America, prison is a fuckin joke in the u.s. Prison is suppose to be punishment. Not only does America give murderers TVs, Games, they even get the best health insurance completely paid for by taxpayers. Its like America rewards criminal behavior.
@@Dig_Duke_SFM the murderers we have are some of the most behaved inmates in the prison. That said, FU. My safety and the safety of staff and other inmates, matter much more than your archaic opinion. They still need permission to use the bathroom. To eat. To wake up. To sleep. To move in their limited freedom. To talk. I guess we should only punish, and not try and make them into contributing members of society, right?
Prison-related rather than game-related, but I've got a friend who writes trashy romance for a living. Her publisher asked her to knock together a trilogy of gay-vampire-romance novels around when Twilight was popular, and her first book was enjoyed by a gentleman in the Ohio penal system. The prison wouldn't let him get the second book in the series, since they deemed it vulgar, so he took it to the state supreme court. He got his book, and she can now market her trashy romance as "protected free speech in Ohio".
I remember this on Ao3 Authors are unhinged vids where a footnote for their fanfic mention on their notes their beta reader is currently in prison which the author waits for.
I actually work in a game store in Kentucky and we have some people that work at a local prison come in every once in a while to buy games for inmates. It’s weird that you can play gears of war in prison for good behavior but it’s even weirder there is a whole handheld for that purpose. Great vid
I went to jail for weed and they showed all the Friday movies on the TV in the rec room. It was messed up. All I wanted to do was smoke weed. I was in jail for weed. And they were showing us comedy movies, about Weed. In jail...
Its hilarious that this post is two years old, yet the replies are all from the last few days. I wonder what prompted the algorithm to lead all of us here?
In 2005 here in Maryland, prisons took most of our “street clothes” (clothes with name brands and certain colors) but then they allowed us to get Gameboys and at first Nintendo DS handhelds (but they stopped that due to being able to message other DS consoles nearby but the people who already had them, were allowed to keep them). We also got cable. People wonder why we were allowed to get stuff like that since we were supposed to be in there being punished but it’s a way to pacify prisoners. Having a tv, handheld gaming system, cable, and things like that, kept more prisoners in their cells for long periods of time which made it easier on the small amount of guards to keep violence down and less prisoners to deal with.
True, prisoners are supposed to be punished, but Cruel & Unusual Punishment is very much a thing, and human beings tend to suffer horribly if we don't have SOME form of recreation (solitary confinement is an extreme example, in how there's close to NOTHING for the brain to engage with, and that really gets to you). Not everyone behind bars is equally bad either, while one guy could be in for murder, another could be in for insurance fraud or tax evasion.
@@0neDoomedSpaceMarine I agree, except for the part about how they're "supposed to be punished". The point of prison is not punishment.. or at least that's not the right way to think about it. Prison is a *_consequence_* much more than a punishment. I mean obviously their is a punishment component in there, but the goal is not, should not, and _cannot_ be punishment. The goal should be to separate people who can't live in society until they are capable of doing so [without harming other people]. By thinking about prison as a punishment, we make it significantly less likely that prisoners are capable of coming out the other side as intact, functional human beings. In my opinion, we should make prison as comfortable as possible. Because let's be real: even if they had the most absurdly luxurious shit like a chocolate fountain and the newest gaming consoles and gourmet chefs.. it would still be prison. They still can't leave. They still can't see their loved ones. They're still going to feel that degradation of not being able to make your own choices. The vast majority of them are still going to feel shame for what they did. They're still stuck in the same building for YEARS ON END. There is no scenario where people are like "oh wow, prison sounds pretty dope! I'm going to commit a crime because I'd rather be in prison than get a job!".The only people who ever do shit like that are people that have lives so awful that prison seems like a positive alternative (such as a homeless man in winter who is in danger of freezing to death outside). I guess all I'm trying to say is that it should be about separation and rehabilitation, not punishment.
@@idontwantahandlethough Rehabilitation is good, but there still needs to be an element of punishment to function as a deterrent, ergo as a serious consequence. Some people will still do crimes with harsh punishments, but if a punishment is harsh then fewer people will figure it worth the risk.
When things are “prison issued” it’s normally common items given for daily life. Clothes, shoes, toilet paper, and such. None of these electronic extras are issued. They are bought, for an extremely inflated price, from a business that is in with the prison. It’s normally not the inmate that pays these absurd prices, it’s there poor family on the outside.
it definetly is lmao, the sound chip probably couldn't reach the highest notes so it plays them an octave lower or something, and that's why it's so broken.
The fact that I can say with 100% certainty that people have fought over protecting these shovelware games in prison makes me almost want to cry in a very strange way
i was in juvie but they had a "level system". if you got to the top level, you got a game boy micro to use and turn in at the end of the night before they lock you in your cell... the last kid to have it gave it to me the night before he left and never told the guards... i snuck it out when i got transferred to the rehab center i was going to. lol. ended up selling it years later because i needed money but deeply regretted it so a year or so after that, i bought another one off ebay 😆 still have it to this day!
"That TV isn't going to stand up to what you have in your living room." Untrue. That clear plastic exterior is _hella rad!_ I've been waiting for that aesthetic to make a comeback for years, but apparently prison is ahead of the curve!
Honestly I've seen that aesthetic quite a lot online with electronics and room decor. I absolutely do NOT like it at all, but I still understand why people would think it looks cool. It's like retro and futuristic at once 🤖
Quite frankly, I feel all prisoners should be able to have access to game devices and things like table top rpgs. Those things can help reduce violence within the prison system and actually break down divisions amongst inmates. Also, they can help better each inmate and better rehabilitate them, especially if they play games that demand cooperation, where they're forced to work together. Instead of using them as legal slaves, do that as well as implement work programs to help prepare them for when they get out.
Would never be a guy in jail because they actually have things they need to do during the day to live in jail or prison. They would also probably be restricted after certain hours to use those things. I know some are. @@Rockyzach88

If we treat them like humans we might have to reform them, If we reform them they won't reoffend. How are we supposed to make money selling people if we don't have criminals victimizing folk?
As a Correctional Officer from ISCI (Idaho state corrections institution) these are definitely a form of escapism. Officers sometimes forget that we are not meant to punish the inmates, we are here to keep them safe. My institution actually has the “mini” consoles. Sega, PlayStation, and a tablet. The inmates do ALOT better when they have access to these items. Great video!
@@KeepItGoinBeats Actually, there's plenty of reasons/crimes you can go to prison for that are non-violent, meaning a person can decide and act to go to prison without hurting anyone. Not only that but there are plenty of homeless people who either commit crimes or violate their probation just to go to jail for either food and shelter, and/or medical treatment. Minimum and medium security prisons are not that bad, when I was locked up the one thing I did enjoy was the almost vacation feel there was to my cell. If I could have a PS or Xbox in my cell I would seriously think about getting locked up just so I can play undisturbed for some time. Point is, I don't think it's "completely unrealistic" for someone to just want to get away and be locked in a room with all the time to play games even if they get a couple misdemeanors on their record. If they know the system the can go for charges that they can later get expunged.
7:20 This is Zuma, another classic flash game (as i remember it anyways). For sure the og though. You control a little frog that shoots the bobbles but it's the same idea, just looks a lot nicer since it's drawn.
Prison can serve as a place to punish criminals, a place to rehabilitate them, a place to keep them separate from the rest of society, or a place to make a profit off of cheap labor What prison is like depends on which of those goals is being prioritized
@@complainer406 it also mostly depends on how dangerous the prisoners are deemed to be. Speaking as a prior resident of ye ol michigan department of corrections back around 06, the commissary inventory didn't include those unfortunately. Our facility has android tablets the inmates can “rent” for $5 a month and buy all sorts of stuff on them. Games, music, movies, books, podcasts, tons more too. Not a bad deal for us guards since it keeps them occupied and away from our desks.
I had a "handheld" like this like 20 years ago an over half of these games were on there too. Not even reskins the exact same games. The nostalgia hits hard with this one
Wow RUclips actually recommended someone I like to watch for the first time in a while, quality stuff dude I look forward to watching your channel grow.
I'm gonna say the reason they took "on and off" out is because when you turn them off they look like black face. Which is why they had to redesign that one pokemon and Mr Popo from dragon ball z. When the shows came to america. And im sure i dont need to explain black face and why its considered offensive to americans.
Saying it's prison issued makes me think it's like right after you get sentenced they're like "okay here's your orange jumpsuit and handheld game console"
Glad you’re around still. Love revisiting your channel almost once every month. Take care and stay safe, hope you’ve got more up your sleeve. If not, hope you’re happy with whatever you’re up to, dude!
There are clear Playstation 3 and Xbox consoles out there for prisons, I've seen them. They are sold to inmates by a third party who takes the original consoles, puts all the guts in a clear case, disables with wifi and uploads a stable OS and firmware update. The inmates then buy physical copies of prison approved games from a catalog. I don't know the name of the company that sold them but I know they were significantly more expensive than the off the shelf consoles due to the cost of the modifications and the markup added by the prison.
Don't really think this is true. Do you have any links? Normally stuff like this not only van inmates buy them. But families and buy them as well for inmates. And everything I find the photos show nonclear consoles. So bascially ones you buy from the store. They just don't get to keep them all day everyday. Only on certain times. Plus no need to disable wifi since there are passwords and you must be supervised in a holding area. But that's just what I could find. There are tons of sources. But I can't find one about clear consoles. Or even being able to keep it in your cell. So there wouldn't be a point in making it clear anyways.
@@williamthompson1455 It's real. Keep in mind this was like 10 years ago. I don't recall the name of the company that made them but they might not even exist anymore. This wasn't a max facility either; it was minimum security. No cells. Dorms with 4-6 people in each.
@@AceSeptre was it JL Marcus or Union Supply? I was locked up for 11yrs the main property catalogs we had was JL Marcus, Union Supply and one other but now it's just JL Marcus and Union Supply. I was in medium security joints and at the time we didn't have this handheld, or tablets no gaming consoles either, but as he said it really just depends on what state you're locked up in.
@@NonLegitNation2 The commissary program was operated by the state as a for profit business and had their own catalog. Whether they ran the program through another distributor I couldn't say for sure. I've tried to find a photo of one of these consoles but they were pretty rare because of how expensive they were. I think both were around $700-$800, games were $80. All three guys that had one when I was around were running books on Madden games and one of them lost their Xbox when the COs found his slips.
10:03 - Troll can also mean to search for something. I'm not sure if that's what they were going for; but, it kind of makes sense. I enjoyed this video. The RUclips algorithm is on fire lately.
I would love to get video footage of the inmates reviewing these games. It would amazing. They probably also know all the tips and tricks, and trade cheat codes for boges.
The game that you’re thinking of which Squirrel Bobble ripped off, is “Puzzle Bobble”. But at least you remember “Bubble Bobble” which has the same playable characters.😆
A Video game console seems like a great idea for prison it gives them a way to escape and maybe timpers wouldn't flare up as often and help your time go by faster. A could definitely see the Violence actually go down in a prison that allows you to have video game consoles.
I was in county jail for a few months, all I got was whatever books were on the book cart. I was over there reading C tier romance trash out of boredom while the guys who got longer sentences got to play Get the Meet all day
If I was stuck in prison with this thing I'd just ask to be given the chair. On the other hand, I could easily survive a lifetime in solitary with a Rasberry Pi.
You say that, but I think having something like this, even with this extremely shity games would be like gold. Honestly I feel like this thing will feel like a Nintendo DS or Raspberry Pi like you said
How about the fact if you didn’t screw up to begin with you would not be in jail?😂 Sorry guys but I don’t think a criminal but that is being punished should be playing video games maybe read a book rehabilitate his self. I never heard of rewarding someone for being bad kind of defeats the purpose.
They make MP3 players and video players like this, too. I used to teach in a max security prison once or twice a month for about 2 years, and we worked hard to get out sermons and lessons (in Messianic Judaism) onto audio and video formats those devices could use and approved by the Warden for the prisoners to have and share on their devices.
I noticed that as well, but it didn't surprise me at all. I'm a software engineering student and decided to make a retro video game as one of my class projects. At the time, I had been playing a lot of Mario games, so when the time came to create the player character I straight up ripped the sprites from Super Mario World, only modifying the colors and the character's hat. It doesn't surprise me that others do the same when making these kind of games.
It’s basically Action 52 but on a portable system, made for prisons. Which is kind of appropriate actually, since prisoners are basically being punished, and Action 52 was awful. Make the punishment fit the crime.
Yeah this is something you would be hyped and excited to get in prison... That is at least until you realize you just paid for a console that is going to just punish you haha..
This looks literally a million times better. These are actual games, while Action 52 was conceived by a businessman who didn't know anything about video game and had the simple logic that all games are equal and 52 is better than one, and as such he was going to become crazy rich. Got a couple of college kids to create it, a timeframe of 3 months, with one week to learn how to program for the NES.
Please don't compare Action 52 with video games that people like playing. The people who made Action 52 should be in prison and sentenced to play Action 52 while there.
This is such a weird attitude. First of all.. ideally, no, prison is not for punishment. We obviously don't live in an ideal world, but what you're saying is both counterproductive and nonsensical. Prison is a consequence for doing things that harm others in society. Prison exists to keep people safe [by confining those that make them unsafe], and to *_rehabilitate_* the people who end up there. The goal is to mold them into upstanding members of society. If we desire to do that, it is crucial that we make sure that they are treated humanely while in prison. There is quite literally zero benefit to making [American] prisons more grotesque than they already are. Treating inmates like animals doesn't make them _less_ likely to do bad things in the future, it makes them *_MORE LIKELY._* This is not surprising: when you treat someone like an animal for long enough, eventually they start to believe that they are one. The "punishment" is going to prison. Even the best prison still sucks. You can't leave. You can't see your friends or family. It's super degrading. It's dangerous. The food sucks. There's nothing to do. If we give them video games, it's not somehow going to make prison not suck. It's not going to make some guy go "Golly gee willickers, these games suck! That's the last straw, I'm never doing crime again 😤!!", and I'm sure you know that. That's not how human beings work. It might not *_feel_* as good to some, but the reality is that we need to treat prisoners a lot better than we currently do if we want them to have any chance at re-entering society (and imo we should want that, because the alternative is a gigantic problem for everyone) Prison can be two things, depending on one's mindset. We can go with the "enlightened" mindset (lol I hate that word so much, but whatever), where prison is a necessary thing where we send people who are dangerous to society, in hopes that someday they will cease to be a danger and can be reintegrated into the real world.. Or.. we can go with the oldschool mindset, where prison is a place where we send people to be tortured, and then derive some sort of sick pleasure from their suffering. I can understand the emotional desire to want to see bad people pay for their crimes, but it's pretty clear that's a desire we should not be succumbing to. ---------- TL;DR - being locked up IS the punishment. We don't need to be purposefully withholding things, especially in situations like this where better games would cost the same [or less] than the cheap shit. There's no purpose there other than to deliberately make someone's life slightly worse, for the sake of making their life slightly worse. We can do that, but in the long run that only serves to hurt everyone. If we want a brighter future, we stop deciding on the easy, emotional choice. We must make the difficult, less fun decision to raise each other up. "A rising tide lifts all boats"
The algorithm served this up to me this morning. Super interesting video thanks for sharing the info on this console (even though I am finding it 2 yrs after it’s original post lol). I have one small critique, please don’t use the term tattoo “guns” they’re tattoo machines. The vast majority of the tattoo artists and the industry at large hate the term “tattoo guns.” Keep up the great work!
I’ve never been to prison myself, but I have known a couple of people who have and they say that if you’re at a prison where you’re allowed to have a tv but don’t have one, it sucks. But more than that, if you previously had but no longer have one, it’s downright brutal.
Things must have changed a good bit. I did 2 years in PA back in 2009 to 2011 for a non-violent drug charge. I had a small tv and a radio walkman. I would have loved this.
You should do a teardown and take close up shots of everything. We may be able to get emulators running on it. I know they're in prison, but... those games are torture.
When I was in jail there was an Xbox 360 in my pod. There was 1 game that worked which was Nascar 2010. Apparently people fought over NBA 2k12 and broke most of the other discs. The enemies are possibly removed in the gem collection game due to psychologically keeping violence out of inmates minds.
My uncle was constantly in-and-out of jail for most of my life until he passed away in 2022. I never heard him talk about playing any consoles in jail but... he never really seemed like the type to play games. Also, when I was 11, he stole my Xbox 360 for crack money.
Thank you for that video. I've never seen the gaming handhelds before. I've heard that in some Penitentiaries the convicts can order them in there quarterly packages. Im from California 831 and have been to 8 prison's and didn't have that luxury. For a fact that would of had me in my cell playing on hours on end. Instead of going to yard or day room if I was on the tier that got yard that day. Most of us parole onto society angry and bitter when dwelling on our lost time. But video games would of helped in the isolation part. Since I've been off parole and probation, I purchased a PS4 in 2014. That saved me from from being in the streets and getting shot or stabbed. Honestly I owe it to the world of gaming. All in all in my opinion, gaming consoles would of kept me and some of my homies out of trouble and not loosing our release dates. That's my opinion and facts!!!!
Yeah we didn't get that in Texas either. Only thing that kept me sane was my radio and books. I couldn't imagine how my time would have been without those. If id had a Gameboy or something like that hell those four years would have flown by !

Now THAT is a c.o.

You watched a video lol stop larping

Imagine the best MMO player is just some guy in jail that has nothing else to od.

Completely unrealistic

I was in county jail for a few months, all I got was whatever books were on the book cart. I was over there reading C tier romance trash out of boredom while the guys who got longer sentences got to play Get the Meet all day
Make good life choices, no more tax fraud, glad to see someone out of prison and happy, hoped you changed your life around!

@@StopDropRetro Wait were you actually in prison or were you joking? I'm confused
If I was stuck in prison with this thing I'd just ask to be given the chair. On the other hand, I could easily survive a lifetime in solitary with a Rasberry Pi.
I could survive in a Manhattan closet apartment with a Pi!
You say that, but I think having something like this, even with this extremely shity games would be like gold. Honestly I feel like this thing will feel like a Nintendo DS or Raspberry Pi like you said
I would be entertained enough with a laptop with only python installed
So could I the pi has a tons of good games on it
How about the fact if you didn’t screw up to begin with you would not be in jail?😂 Sorry guys but I don’t think a criminal but that is being punished should be playing video games maybe read a book rehabilitate his self. I never heard of rewarding someone for being bad kind of defeats the purpose.
Playing “get the meat” in prison is crazy
Drop the soap more of the craze lmfao.
hey! me and my uncle played that game once!
@@jerrynadler2883 i bet you did Jerry Nadler
They make MP3 players and video players like this, too. I used to teach in a max security prison once or twice a month for about 2 years, and we worked hard to get out sermons and lessons (in Messianic Judaism) onto audio and video formats those devices could use and approved by the Warden for the prisoners to have and share on their devices.
Gotta love how one of the games uses the snail from maple story. The other uses red overworld sprite from pokemom firered
The sprite isn't exactly the sprite, but I was made to look very similar.
Had to stop by to tell you how terrible your joke is.
Just don't try to make a joke next time...
It might not *_feel_* as good to some, but the reality is that we need to treat prisoners a lot better than we currently do if we want them to have any chance at re-entering society (and imo we should want that, because the alternative is a gigantic problem for everyone)
Prison can be two things, depending on one's mindset.
----------
TL;DR - being locked up IS the punishment.
Man, Nintendo direct really focused on indie games this year.
If all inmates had their own console in their cell im sure there would be a lot less prison stabbings and rapes.
I agree i think that's a great idea.
Converting em to true gamers lol
Because the assholes will be loose asf smuggling 360s, Ps4s and shit 😭
people would be getting stabbed for their consoles.
Eww Oppp Not if everybody got the same one? Seems a bit silly.
Oh my god I was genuinely afraid something bad had happened to you, glad to know you're okay more than anything
Thanks man! Sorry about the long silence
For a prison game console, I find it funny that the second game listed is “Busy Bong”
You should do a teardown and take close up shots of everything. We may be able to get emulators running on it. I know they're in prison, but... those games are torture.
I doubt it can emulate anything save for maybe some gameboy or game gear games. Someone should donate a bunch of rasbery pi’s to a prison
Nothing wrong with Go Bang and Get the Meet

Wow!
Yeah we didn't get that in Texas either. Only thing that kept me sane was my radio and books. I couldn't imagine how my time would have been without those. If id had a Gameboy or something like that hell those four years would have flown by !
gamers live a lot longer than gangsters, hope you can keep playing for many years to come :)
I once had a co-worker who mentioned he had an Xbox 360 while in prison. Seeing these games on the handheld variety, now I better appreciate what he played.
11:28 isnt this the music score from naruto whenever a good guy reveals their secret strategy they had been working on throughout the whole fight and proceed to kick the bad guy's butt?
Yep
in some country like Norway, their prison even have a game center with arcade cabinet and many modern consoles, just let inmate busy and happy makes them never think of breaking the prison and only leave when their sentence has been served.
Holy cow, this just unlocked some memories for me! I used to have the Disney GAME iT as a kid and I was wondering why some of the games looked (and sounded) so familiar!
It's got an actually decent collection of puzzle games, including what looks to be a clone of Magical Drop of all things, so I'd be pretty set with one of those if I ever get locked up lol. Well, as long as I had plenty of spare batteries.

In 2002 I got 3 yr 11 months in jail here in the East of the UK, I had a Game Cube with about 15 games, for 9 months I was in a 3 man cell in the notorious A wing at HMP Norwich, my cell mates were friends I know out side, we used to mainly play Tiger Woods, Mario Cart and Need for Speed 2, I literally got it sent in just before they banned them at that prison, so not many ppl had one, our cell was always packed at association. I do Graffiti too and got bugged to do tats all the time, I did a few, the best one was tatting OUTLAW across some dudes back in an arch shape, that is when everyone crazed me to do more, a gun is very simple to make, 1 old stereo with a casette for the motor, 1 paper clip, 1 elastic band, a pin, 1 Bic pen, and some ink, trust me, boredom can make you create some real intuitive things.
Ah, the Mousehold Hotel. I had a Gameboy slim while in (got out in 2002). A wing was a shithole, got shifted to the rehab C when it was still one to a cell. Happy days. lol. We're still alive and kicking though.
