Goldeneye might have had bad controls but they were good enough for my dad to be one of the only games he would play with me haha
Bingo, cheers to that! Before all fps games played the same, we ol timers were olympic figure skaters on golden eye controls. It's hard to go back to without remapping controls because of modern conditioning but that takes nothing away from that ancient concept called "fun"!
Interesting how this list morphs and changes through the decades based on each new generation of gamers involved in the medium

Ocariner of Time
I would’ve changed Goldeneye with Doom, changed Mario 64 with Mario 3, replaced Sonic 2 with 3 & Knuckles, Zelda with the original, and FF7 with Streets of Rage 2
Streets of rage 2 was peak gaming back then!
Oh! And I forgot. Switch out Pokémon withStreet Fighter 2, and if I really need to pin one down, it’ll have to be either Super Turbo or SF2 hyper fighting.
I have my preferences and biases, but i think Doom is criminally omitted

This really misses out on some critical games. No Resident Evil? It spawned an entire genre. Sonic Adventure, Master Blaster...you can tell the age of the participants based on the choices.
There is already a token sonic game on the list. The oldest game on this list is from 1980 and the second oldest is from 1989. Those are some fairly old games.
Perhaps it would have made more sense to have a "10 Best Classic Retro Games of All Time" with games 16Bit and below
@@HYDRAdude that's two games. From the 64 era, which is five years or so, there's the rest of them. Halo isn't even on this list. It's comical.
Resident Evil 2 is always on my mind when I think of best classic retro games. That having said, I appreciate different opinions. Not all lists have to be the same.

Your argument about FF 7 is very good, even though i dont think is the best of the Series or Jrpg at all, is a point that i can't argue about, the impact of the game is timeless.
top 10 is too little, it should be top 100 to include Chrono trigger, super Metroid, grand theft auto san andrea, and etc.
Metroid & Castlevania created an entire sub genre…so where are they on your list? 🧐

Super Mario world should be number 1, goldeneye should not be on the list, Tetris should be higher and Pokémon gold/silver should be there instead of red/blue

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is THE BEST N64 game. It's so much fun compared to other LOZ games, especially the new ones. I still play it today 😅

Unpopular opinion: I never liked Zelda. I tried. I never understood the hype behind this game. Unpopular opinion 2: Super Mario 64 is so frustrating to play.

@BlueCollaredGrit No, I'm 16, and I love retro games! I've played MGS, OOT, MM, FF7, Chrono Trigger, and more! and guess what? I enjoyed playing those games. It's not the fact that people had to grow up in an era to enjoy it it's the fact that people have something called -PERSONAL PREFERENCE- No offence I'm just saying that you are 100 percent wrong.
@BlueCollaredGrit It does it's called -PERSONAL PREFERENCE - maybe he likes different categories. Maybe he prefers Tetris, Terraria, etc. Maybe he likes games that are short because he is busy. It's literally called PERSONAL PREFERENCE. And yes, I knew you were referring to the original comment. Making my point quite relevant.

Goldeneye is far too high on this list. It hasn't aged well at all. Too many rose tinted spectacled votes.
People make custom levels and other movie themed games
Absolutely. And it didn't take long to get there either. The moment Halo popularized dual-analogue controls as the standard for console FPSs, the only reason to go back and play Goldeneye was to see how clunky it felt now.
There are quite a few games I'd put ahead of Goldeneye (and Sonic 2).

@@brev653 If "clunkiness" was the objective measure of quality for a game, then every single console FPS (even modern ones) would be automatically ruled out for being objectively more clunky than PC FPS games controlled with mouse and keyboard.
OOT is very overrated though. ALTTP is better.
Nice list, except Goldeneye. That game does NOT hold up imo. I think it was only good because it was the only way to play split screen fps on a TV using a home console. The single-player campaign was cheap and poorly designed (and I did 100% it on 007 difficulty). There just have to be dozens of more important retro games than Goldeneye.
