  • @josephg41

I didn't know they were really hated? One of the only generations I've never owned, but I still want to. I see these cars with high 200, and 300,000 miles often, in my line of work, and they still seem to be holding up well. I understand it's down on power a lot from today's stangs and even some other cars from the time. But one area the old 4.6 will always have a one-up on the Coyote, and almost every other newer motor from any brand, is its relative simplicity. As a mechanic I'd much rather work on a 4.6 than a Coyote or a Chevy LT. A 4.6 is an engine that will go the distance. That same unloved 4.6 is the engine that powered the legendary Crown Vic police cars, and the Mercury Grand Marquis. On those rigs it's very very common to see 400,000+ miles, original everything.

I bought it not so much because I wanted a Mustang, but because I wanted a 2 door rear wheel drive American car. The Mustang was pretty much my only real choice. It is so much fun driving my bright yellow Mustang to work in the morning in a sea of grey and black front wheel drive 4 door sedans, crossovers, and 4 door taxi trucks. I got it 6 years ago for $4200 in near new condition. Back then V6 Mustangs had almost no value. Nobody wanted one. It turned out to be the perfect car for me.

I learned how to drive in my mother's 2002 Roush Stage 2 and it was basically my daily in high school. When I first got used to the manual transmission, I pulled it out of a parking lot and immediately went into an 8 hour road trip. It taught me burnouts, donuts and figure 8s. I even got a few decent entry-level drifts with it! The factory plastic intake manifold failed on us, so we supercharged the 2V with 110k miles on it and made 330 whp and 345 tq. One owner car, spent a lot of it's life getting beat up by rowdy young dudes and it still pulls like a champ. My mother is cruising it happily into her 60s and I'll buy it when she's ready to sell. ❤

Some people who drive other manuals will still get in it and complain about how stiff my clutch feels but I really like it, I just tell them they should've felt it before all the work I did to it.

I had a brand new 2002 Mustang GT five speed manual back in the day and while it was really slow, I raced a brand new BMW M hatchback on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and he handed me my rear end. I wasnt racing him at first, but after he passed me I downshifted in an attempt to keep up and I stuck with him up to 135 MPH when we both took the same exit and he went up on three wheels and I slowed down quickly to make the opposite side of the exit and I legit thought he wrecked out, but he rocked it and continued down to a racetrack that used to be nearby called Beaver Run, but it's now called Pittsburgh Race Complex (or something like that, in Wampum, PA). After that I sold that Mustang and bought a DA9 Integra (my favorite body style Teg), boosted it, and it was one of the best cars I've ever owned. That 1992 Integra made a little more horsepower than the Mustang (256 whp) and still ran a 12.2 @ 126 mph.

Also, speaking of my Integra days, my buddy had an original SN95 1995 GT with the 302W and he had it fully built and stroked (minus sleeves) with a Roots style Kenne Belle supercharger and it made just under 600 whp. He had tall slicks on it and that thing would stand on one rear wheel on a hard launch and when I put slicks on my DA9 we would drag down 51 in Bridgewater, PA back in 2002 and 2003 and we would stay nose to nose until the red light at the turn for Beaver. Those were the days. We had alot of the old school hotrod guys that would always crap on us both until we would line up and smoke them all, but seriously, the ONLY vehicle that ever gave us both a good run was a 2002 Lightning and he had a FBO 5.4 with a five speed manual swap, and ran 20s with drag radials that would dead hook every time...on a well-used highway. He had Altezza tail lights and I got SO tired of looking at them that I blew my engine trying to chase him down. He would never tell us what all was done to it, but my buddy with the supercharged SN95 jacked him up against a wall and tried to force him to tell us what he did to that truck and he refused. He had some serious mods in that engine. No doubt they're fast from the factory, but this thing would just walk away from us both and we were constantly racing 429 swapped Galaxies and 454 SS Chevelles with ease, so it was mind boggling to us both how that Lightning could just give us the deuces.
Edit: I'm sorry, I dont mean to sound like we were the end all, be all of the time, alot of the races that we were in were close races, but we won most of them, especially when I would turn the boost up a little and adjust my tune, but we didn't win against the hotrodders ALL the time.

The cars that deserve praise especially of this generation is any with a 4v whether it be the multiple years of cobra or Mach 1. Or on the contrary how relatively simple it is to 4v swap a 2V. You can take the heads off a Navigator, 98 cobra cams, ported intake and make 350-370whp at 7000. Cobra crank and Coyote rods are also a good way to build a bullet proof motor on a budget. A heads cam 4v can make 370-390whp or even 400 with a really good tune. Another consideration is that the New edge is still a Fox platform! These cars can be gutted out to some pretty insane weights 2700# street legal is possible.
These cars are becoming nostalgic for not just people who drove them back in the day but for folks such as me who saw them growing up. Definitely a modern classic. Wish to obtain a clean Mach 1 sometime soon.
