I think your work is great. If I only had have of your talent
By the contrary Haroldo! Um quite an average modeler around here! If you check for ex: "Ukscalemodeler" ir even "Panzermansbunker" or even Plasmo, you Will see there are much better modelers than i am and i really enjoy there vídeos... Cheers
@@AlexModeling You are great... Plasmo is insane... I think he's half artist half computer, lol
He is a great modeler and artist
Great job on a heroic boat. Well done. I'm impressed with your painting and weathering skills.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
You say you are not a true modeler---, well sir, in my opinion, you are certainly worthy of the title, MODELER,in all sense of the word. An outstanding presentation truly worthy of a diorama of its own. WELL DONE. ajh
I have the Airfix Vosper M.T.B and German E-Boat, very old kits from the '70s. This PT-109 would go well with them, I think. Beautiful build, Alex, you really let the character of the boat shine through. Love the shell casings too, what a great detail to add!
Amaizing work..!! Congratulation..George from Argentina..
Please note that non of these boats ever had "metal decks"
From BUREAU OF SHIPS NAVY DEPARTMENT:
Decking shall be single layer of mahogany plywood, approximately 9/16 inch thick, installed in general accordance with plan, BuShips No. PT486-S1106-411193, subject to development of satisfactory material. Covering board and plank sheer shall be of mahogany. Beams shall be of mahogany, sawn type, molded 6 inches and sided 1 1/8 inches throughout except at hatchways, etc., where beams are 1 3/8 inches. Short beams reduced molding except in way of torpedo tubes. Intermediate bent-beams shall be of mahogany 7/8 by 3 inches in crew's quarters, and elsewhere as required. Intercostal bridging in three courses under forward deck with mahogany stretcher below the beams; the wing courses shall pick up the deck coaming with ample lap-by, resuming at after end of engine hatch and continuing to transom.
Thank you very much Sir! I will have this on my mind when building my Next One! And thank you for your series of vídeos about ELCO PT Boats. It was of great help and inspiration! Thank you
You brought this boat to life. Brilliant techniques. We can learn much from. you.
My father served in the Korean War, in the Navy on a PT-109 torpedo boat like this. Just bought this model.
The boat turned amazing. Museum quality.
Thank you!
Don't get off work until 17:45, get hone about 18:30 make some coffee in my Alex Modeling mug, sot back relax and watch an highly anticipated video. 👍👌🇵🇹🤝🇺🇸
To be very honest i started editing this vídeo because you asked so much for it! I hope your not disapointed.. thank you for motivating me
Your work are 3 dimensional works of art . Never apologize . You are an artist . Your canvas is plastic model kits . Thank you .
I found some good pictures of the stern gun. You just dolled yours up. Still looks cute.
This is the first video of yours that I’ve watched ! I was asked to build a PT-109 for someone & went looking. You’ve set the standard & if my model looks half as good, I’ll be asked to do more. Your attention to detail and willingness to teach the rest of us how you’re doing something is so appreciated. You’ve gained admiration and a new fan! Liked/ Subscribed/ Shared!!
Thank you! Stay safe
Thanks for all the various views. I am constructing the cabins, turrets, etc. and it is nice to see how yours fit. Good paint
thanks for sharing your video with us Alex, turned out great. we always look forward to your builds. We're thank full you share when you can.
Great build, looking forward for your next video.
Great techniques and great result. Thanks Alex 👍
Excellent work and the details are spot on. Glad you are back Alex. Cheers!
Nice build Alex, great detail. Its also a pleasure to watch your videos. Nice to have you back. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
Thank you for all kind comments you always make... Honored for serving
Great build. Alex, can’t wait to build mine.
Outstanding, as always.
I really enjoyed this video! Thanks Alex. The spent shell casings were a nice touch. I'm surprised you didn't drill out the search light and fill it with clear epoxy. Still a fantastic boat. To keep a smile on my face I build a long term modeling project but I keep a small quick project going along side it for fun. Like an airfix hurricane or something like that
Alex, thanks so much for the video! Enjoy your informal dialogue a lot - I find it really educational actually.
ALSO, been playing with oils for a while lately but something in this video really helped things "click" when using them.
Thank you thank you! Keep it up 💯
🇵🇹🤝🇺🇲
Thank you very Much!
Loving the foil and flag
It's so great seeing another one of your builds......we appreciate that you are willing to share your work with us and, as to be expected, are never disappointed. Super job and an amazing result.
Thank you!
Интересная стройка, необычная технология, симпатичная модель. Мне понравилась👍👍👍🤝...
📌 Отличная работа! Молодец. Спасибо! Есть чему поучиться. 😃👍
Loved the build. Will be my next project.
Alex , man your work is out of control. Watching you work is the best thing ever. I'm learning so much for your Videos. Keep up the good work, your the best.👍
Honored! Thanks
Wow, super accurate built. I like it. I´m inspired to build one by my own.
So glad you are back Alex. Thanks so much. Take care and be safe please
You too. Thanks!
Outstanding! Thank you for the video.
A true joy to see this famous boat coming together man! I like what you did to this fairly old and basic kit, how you painted and weathered it in a way that makes you forget that it is just an ordinary Revell kit :) Fantastic documentation and result my friend.
Coming from you Michael its a great compliment! Thank you! I enjoied thisbpne very much and helped me on outting away these complicated days se are living in. I hope you and yours are safe and above all healthy! My compliments
very nice build. good to see you had fun with the kit and enjoying the jack daniels with it always good to have at your side.. just not to much when you have small parts to do
Or liquid glue at your side!😂😂
Thanks for this Alex.. I enjoyed your talk track very much and picked up a few good tips along the way !
Thank you! I sometimes speak a bit too much! 🙂🙂👍
Overall a very impressive build. I would suggest starting with a considerably darker green and then weathering it as you did. The paint that the Navy was able to use in those days in the Solomon Islands tended to chalk out very quickly due to the Tropic Sun and then when the rains came it washed the chalk paint down over the whole side so it would have been streaky and streaky with much lighter paint than the original dark green. One other nip to pick and that is this, the stippled appearance of the paint on everything on the deck is not prototypical period in a larger scale boat you could certainly do brush marks because the guys painted the boats with a brush however the stippling is not prototypical. I found it interesting that you added extra styrene Chine logs or Chine rails. Very interesting. Skool!
thank you for video! Got a lot of useful information about that boat and building. Looking forward for your new videos!
Good job you put a lot of work in that boat
Awesome work my friend keep up the good work
Great video. Very nice color choices.
Wonderful to see you back Alex and what a boat WOW!!!👌🙂
Thx Jamie
Great video and work!
Thank you! 👍🇵🇹
Great job on the PT boat Alex... nice use of a variety of weathering and modulation effects. Got to be happy with that result.
Hello Harry! Yes i am. Very pleased with it! Cheers
Thanks Alex, nice job
Já fazia muito tempo que não via um video clip teu. Cada vez melhor! Parabéns!
Muito obrigado! Forte abraço
Thank you!
j'ai adoré le scotch 🤣🤣🤣
Como siempre Alex...un inmejorable trabajo y estupendo tutorial...un cordial y grato saludo desde Madrid.
Para ti tb companero! Saludos
AsI recall they added- improvised a 37mm antitank gun lashed to the bow for use on japanese barges.
Fantastic, i enjoyed this build, Great detail
Gun strapped to bow was a 37mm Anti Tank Gun found by the crew on Tinian.
again a great "full build" from you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great build Alex, glad to see you back, hope you are good. Greetings from CPH, stay safe 🇩🇰
Greetings from Portugal!
Nice job you've made there, Alex.
This has been a great tutorial to watch just before I lay down the money to buy the same kit.
I've had a liking for the old Elco and Higgins Boats tear arsing around the Pacific crewed by guys not long out of school. Often personal preference for a type of gun by the boats skipper and exec lead to some customising by the young captain depending on what he could take while his boat was being repaired after an exchange of lead between the Japanese and American boats and aircraft running protecting cover. No doubt an exciting, yet deadly game for a bunch of fearless youngsters.
So if your build is not being representative of a PT right after launching, then some custom work like non-issue guns would also be authentic. Little craft like these were a part of the Make Do Navy that operated in my back yard up there in the Pacific, the big wide blue Pacific. Now to likely again be turning into a battle ground, where once again was the USN & INJ, now it's still the USN, but the foe this time is the Navy of China. Same shit different day.
The US Navy also deployed PT's in the Mediterranean during WW2, mostly on night patrol duking it out with German Schnellboots. Now, many years latter there remains in Florida a surplus PT painted apparently some god awful colour taking people out on party cruises. I have a friend living there near Tampa who hand built for me a PT Boat from scratch using a solid piece of wood for the hull. The built was in 1/87 model Railroad scale to use in a diorama, but I've placed the boat in a display case instead.
Anyway, thanks, Alex for the excellent build that's been great to watch.
I've subscribed and look forward to your next build.
Thank you! Stay safe!
Just finished this exact kit but not as well as the same finish as yours. I used the brush instead of the sprayer. Thank you for your good advice.
Thank you!
Great job. You could some figures is my only suggestion. I enjoyed the video.
I searched and only after finished found some 1/72 ones... You are right
Built the same model not too long ago.. Yours is better.. 👍👍
Very nice build and really earcatchy 80`s AOR soundtrack. In other word, great build & great song :D
Thank you! :)
NIce work Alex. Enjoyed watching you build again. Stay safe.
You too Bill
Awesome video and project! Thx Andrew
Thank you
I'm saving this video . I've got a revell pt-109 project in the near future.
Go for it!
Another great build Alex I have this kit but in vintage is same mold again nice assembly with your seal thanks for sharing master greetings 👏🏻👏🏻👍
Enjoyed the build very much. Great job done. Credit to you.
Thank you!
Nice work.
Fantastic build and video Alex! Your paint was awesome. This was well worth the wait. It make sense that different boats were painted in different shades. In WW2 in the South Pacific, paint and almost everything else was difficult to procure. And think about the environment of that area of the world. Brutal heat, rain and saltwater played havoc on those boats. I think the painting and weathering very realistic. I can see the ton of work that went into the build, and it shows. I want to thank you Alex for bringing all of us such amazing videos, I really look forward to them, that really lift my spirits and I thank you for that. Again excellent work on the kit. Okay I rambled on far to long, stay safe brother and have a great weekend. I best to your family and friends. God bless. 👍👌🇵🇹🤝🇺🇸
Thank you for asking me for the vídeo Chris! To be honest you were the One who motivated me to Edit this video... I had all this footage but had not started editing it
@@AlexModeling Alex, I am very humbled. Again I would like to thank you for all the inspiration you gave me from watching your channel. I rewatch your videos when I feel depressed or upset, they really cheer me up. Again the build was excellent as well as the video. Have a great and safe weekend my brother. My best to your family and friends. God bless. 👍👌🇵🇹🤝🇺🇸
Unfortunately for me, I don't have all the paints that are afforded to you, but I have enough to get by, fortunately for me, I have mansy reference books on PT boats, and a PT Boat museum with 2 live PT boats inside, the PT Boat school that Kennedy was trained was down the river from where I live but is now gone. I'm 54yrs old and I've built the original Revell kit several times, so I'm not particularly bothered about the details being correct on this new kit just happy to see the PT109 updated, I have two photoetch kits from white ensign for the old kit and I know of a company that makes the camouflage mask for the other kit offered by Revell the PT 596. I've built the 109 in 1/35 th scale and in both scales it is a green called field green, forest green is more a dark green. The 1/35th scale 109 came with color instruction booklet.
Nice job!
Extremely well built.
Thank you!
There was a film made during WW2 starring John Wayne called 'They were expendable' with PT Boats in it.
And also PT109 movie! Check it out
My grandpa who was in the coast guard during WWII ended up as an extra in the movie. He also saw U boats torpedo ships coming out the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico.
Been waiting on this ever since he announced the build!!!! I'm expecting nothing less than perfection!!
Don t keep your expectations to high!! Please!!😂😂😂
@@AlexModeling just saw the video. Expectations met and exceeded!!
I’m thinking of building this model. I had the exact same one when I was about 15 I’m thinking of building it again and converting it to an rc. I can remember my brother and I putting this model in a swimming pool and blowing it up with firecrackers it took a beating before it sunk.
Hi Alex. I am writing this comment late but I am a late comer to your work. The cannon on the rear deck was a 20 mm orliccon and the added cannon on front was a 30 mm anti tank gun. Finally, these boats would have a heavy salt grime which would lighten the colour . The longer the boat was used the more salt grime would be. I enjoy your work and have learned a lot from you. Farewell from Canada. Keep modelling from me Alexander Vaalie Lupsor.
Thank you Alex! Greetings from Portugal!
Agreed - the aft gun was a 20mm Oerlikon - standard on the early 80 ft Elmo’s, and later changed to a 40mm. The bow gun was an “extra” 37mm anti-tank gun found “abandoned” on one of the islands (Tinian, I believe), and resurrected by Kennedy and his Exec, Lester Thom. Later Elmo’s had a 20mm Oerlikon mounted closer to the deckhouse, and many had also adopted the 37mm anti-tank cannon as well, as it proved absolutely ideal for making a mess of Japanese barges and other coastal craft.
Don’t I hate spellchecks - that’s “Elco’s”, and NOT “Elmo’s”!!
Need this. My fathers all time favorite boat.
Enjoy! Thanks
Thank you...your video was a great help to me. A+
Thanks Thomas
Very impressive build
Mega Good Work Sir
I built this boat 60 years ago.It was molded in olive drab. The only painting I did was the bottom.
Really nice results there mate. Neat idea for the weathering . That worked out great
Hello Mark! Thanks!
I built the original Revell 1/72 PT-109 when I was a kid and I've built two more with Photoetch from White Ensign Models, still not happy, now I'm going to build the new up-dated kit with the interior and 37mm deck gun. I'm happy that I have plenty of reference on this boat, I have a squadron walk around book and a Squadron PT boats in action, a Revell PT models book and a hard covered PT book on the building of 80' Elcos. I have frequently visited Battleship Cove in the neighboring state of Massachusets with their own 80-Ft Elco and their own Higgins boat. And to top it off, I live in the state that JFK did his PT training and I've been by the Melville marina. Needless to say I've gotten a lot of reference material. I don't mean to Bragg, because, I'm pretty sure I will not build a better kit as you. I don't know where you live but if ever get to visit, you should stop in the city of Fall River, Massachusetts, they have two full-size PT boats the USS Massachusetts and inside the battleship on the lower decks a PT Boat room with many personal photos and gear of these sailors. They also have a Baloa submarine, a Fletcher class Destroyer, the USS Joseph Kennedy, named after the presidents older brother and finally a "Russian missile boat". In the next City of New Bedford if you are interested is New Bedford Whaling museum.
Thank you! I live in Portugal! But if one day i go to good old US of A i will visit and try to see Those amazing boats! Stay ssfe
Oh so your Portuguese, Fall River, Massachusetts is a Portuguese neighborhood. My daughter Is seeing a Potuguese boy , my first cousins on my father's side are Portuguese, if you come to either Massachusetts or Rhode Island you will be very welcome here, same too you be safe, thankyou.
Fantástico!! eres un gran artista
Solo un maquetista companheiro! Gracias
Try doing an abstract landscape , in acrylic , like you and building those fantastic creations . Glad that you are back . Love the music
Thank you .
Thanks!
Great to see a new video again, and of a nice build too! I think I'm going to have to get me one of these myself
I’m surprised you didn’t pull up paint when you removed the masking tape. In my experience, mission models paints are very fragile and unless I apply a heavy clear coat before masking, the paint will lift every time. Like you,I love the paints, but they do not stand up to masking or handling without a seal coat.
I’ve had exactly the same experience, I found it impossible to mask camouflage without pulling off the paint, that’s despite the usual detacking the tape and leaving paint to dry 48 hours. MMP cost me hours of frustration on a couple of builds and I won’t go near them again.
To be very honest that never happened to me. But now i will pay close atention. I tested the paints and that never happened. But thank you for this comment
Thanks Paul, I’ve been using MMP for a little over a year now and have gotten much better with them, but they are extremely fragile. I take pretty good care in prepping for paint, that said, MMP is the only paint of any type in which I apply primer to a clean surface, overpaint with the color coat, mask some portion thereof, and have the paint and primer both lift to expose plastic. So far the only defense I’ve found is to clear coat immediately after each color application. I will pay more attention to applying heavier wet coats and see if that is more survivable. Otherwise, I love the stuff.
I totally understand your decision. On car models Lacquers are the way... But on the other hand... The smell
Bow gun was an Army 37MM field gun. Nice job.
Beautiful
Just found your page, really enjoyed this build
Thank you! Welcome
Hello.....awesome thats a really nice build.....you should be very proud of that build......keep well keep smiling and keep building.....thanks 😁
Thank you!
Looks absolutely great Alex. Really enjoyd this one
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice and very detailed build unfortunately you forgot to include the main communication and signal mast on your model
I didn t forgot... I didn t knew. Now i know 👍 thank you
You did a very nice job on the 109.... Very impressed with your workman ship. only issue I have ever had with most models built of the 109, is that everyone paints them Green. which PT"s that worked rivers, and narrow channels were either Green, or a camo green. how ever the boats that worked harbors, and wide channels were not Green. Like the Movie PT 109, they were painted Dark Sea Grey to blend in with Sea color of these areas..... in the book PT 109 it states when Kennedy first saw the 109. she was a dark grey boat. the other things allot of modeler's do. And I blame the modeling companies for placing it on their decal sheets. is add the big PT-109 decal at the bow. Pt's Never had PT- number painted on their bows. you only saw this on Mchale's navy on tv. the boats had a small set of numbers of the boat painted across the top of the cabin front, port/starboard on either side of boats open bridge. and on the base of the 20 caliber base mount at the stern. the gun added to the plank's at the bow. was a 35 mm anti tank gun.
Got any good references? Haven't found a whole lot on PT boats.
Correction - cannon on bow was a 37mm M3 Anti-Tank gun. Also noted he painter as if you could see the 20mm ammo on the gun, the Oerlikon used a drum magazine that fully enclosed the rounds. Oh, and nice build.
amazing paintjob!
Amazing model, like the `80s music 👍 Stay safe Alex.
Thanks!
Hey Alex, glad to see you brother. Never apologize, life happens. Always smile, stay safe and happy.
You too brother! Stay safe!
Wikipedia says (for whatever that's worth) that the "PT" Boats used in the movie were not PT boats but a newer USAF crash rescue boats made to look like the ELCO boats since none of the remaining ELCO boats left were in operable condition. So it is uncertain regarding how much we can depend on the movie for accurate information. It is Hollywood after all.
Despite featuring 3 of my least favourite things in modelling, Revell models, boats and MMP’s ;) I really enjoyed the video and the end result.....thanks
Thank you! And thank you for your honesty! 👍🙂
Stern gun was a 20MM Cannon. AGAIN, Nice job.
first captain was Lt. Rollins E. Westholm. Kennedy from 1943. pt-109 to be sink by japanese ship "Amagiri" litteraly cut apart in 08/02/1943
Thanks!
Alex, I don't know if you'll see this but, I just want to share with you, that I have built this model twice, once when I was very young, and once a few years ago. I like you am very disappointed that there are no colored pictures of the 109 anywhere. I can't believe that no one seems to have a picture of this boat. I painted my first model in the green color that I have read was the common color of these boats in the South Pacific. I also painted my last model in the haze gray color, which I assume was the color when they were built at the Elco plant. There's alot of controversy about what the actual color scheme was. I definitely enjoyed watching this video. I like the way you present your videos, they are very enjoyable to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your content. Thank you for sharing your hobby with us.
Thank you Steven for sharing! Its nice to know that my vídeos are apreciated, there is a lot if work put into it! Thank you Sir!
Very nice build alex...
Thx
Great boat and greater job!
Very nice work!
